Tom Hardy To Star In The Outsider, Which Could Mark Takashi Miike’s English-language Debut

June 7, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Tom Hardy

Tom Hardy

Takashi Miike is beloved by fans of Asian movies, having offered us the likes of Audition, Ichi the Killer, and 13 Assassins. He’s also incredibly prolific, often making three or four movies a year. However none of those movies has been in English. That might change though, as Deadline reports he’s in talks to helm The Outsider, with Tom Hardy likely to star.

Based on an original script developed by John Linson and rewritten by Andrew Baldwin, the film is set in post-World War II Japan, with Hardy playing an American G.I. who becomes a member of the notorious Japanese Yakuza organised crime world.

Joel Silver, who is best known for producing classics like Die Hard, Lethal Weapon and The Matrix, is on-board as well. As yet, Miike hasn’t signed on the dotted line, but many people will be keen to see an English-language film from the director.

Warner Bros. Making a Live-Action Archie Comics Movie, But Adds In Zombies

June 7, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Archie-comics-coverWe’re used to comic adaptations, but they usually involve superheroes. However there’s one comic that’s been running since the early 1940s which hasn’t ever been adapted for a live-action, big screen take – Archie Comics. The reason is that it’s not usually action-packed, instead following the lives of a group of young people in a small American town (although Archie has had a superhero reinvention in the past).

They are going to try and bring some action to Archie though, as Deadline reports that Warner Bros. has signed up for a live-action movie, and the first outing will possibly be based on ‘Afterlife with Archie’, which throws zombies into the comics’ mix.

A deal closed last night to bring this latest iteration of the longstanding and iconic comic book series to the screen. Roy Lee and Dan Lin (Gangster Squad; Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows) are producing, with Pitch Perfect’s Jason Moore directing and Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa (Carrie; Glee: Thanksgiving) writing.

The story will take place in a modern day version of Riverdale. At the moment, it’s believed that the screenplay will follow a flesh-eating plague that sweeps through the hallowed hallways of this iconic high school. Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa is also the scribe behind the Afterlife with Archie comic book series, which balances its gore with ‘elements that are quintessentially Archie’.

Archie first appeared in comic books in 1941, and has attempted to stay true to the changing times ever since. In 2010, the series introduced its first gay character, Kevin Keller (there’s no news on whether Kevin will be in the films though). There have been a number of animated series based on the property, and there was a live action 1990 TV movie.

Denzel Washington Will Be Shovel Ready In A New Sci-fi

June 7, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Denzel-WashingtonDenzel Washington must have a bit of a hero complex, where he’s obsessed with protecting people, as he seems to do it in every other movie he makes. Now he’s got a new one, as Denzel is in early talks to star in the Warner Bros. sci-fi adaptation Shovel Ready, based on a forthcoming novel by Adam Sternbergh.

The story is set in a dystopian New York City that is on the verge of ruin, where a majority of the population escape reality through a digital fantasy world. Washington is set to play an assassin hired to murder a powerful evangelist’s daughter, although he instead becomes her protector.

No screenwriter or director has been attached yet, so it’s very early days. The novel will be published in January 2014. (Source: Deadline)

Chevy Chase Back For Hot Tub Time Machine 2

June 7, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

chevy-chaseWe knew that John Cusack was out of the lead role in Hot Tub Time Machine 2, but there’d been no word on whether Chevy Chase would be back for more. Craig Robinson, Rob Corddry and Clark Duke are all set to return, with Adam Scott signing on to replace Cusack in the lead, although he will play a completely new character.

Now it’s been revealed that Chevy Chase is set to reprise his role from Hot Tub Time Machine in the upcoming sequel, Hot Tub Time Machine 2, according to Deadline.

Chevy Chase is returning as the unnamed hot tub repairman, who is always quick to dole out advice. It isn’t known if he will have a larger role this time around.

There is a possibility Cusack will have a cameo, as he recently wrote on his Twitter, “Well see –if they ask -and ask nice -RT @JohnnyMerch Please at least do a Chevy-esque cameo in HTTM2!!!#GreatWhiteBuffalo”

Steve Pink is directing from a screenplay by Josh Heald. Shooting should kick off later this year.

June 6, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Following the success of Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, there’s been a lot of interest taking more John Le Carre’s stories to the screen.

One that’s on its way is Anton Corbijn’s A Most Wanted Man, which stars Philip Seymour Hoffman, Rachel McAdams, Willem Dafoe, Daniel Bruhl and Robin Wright. Now the first trailer has arrived, which was put together to help the independent movie get international sales.

Set in Hamburg, Germany, the plot is about a mysterious man who is near death and looking to retrieve his late father’s fortune. Philip Seymour Hoffman plays a German spy chief who tries to determine the mystery man’s identity. It’s due out in the UK in September, but no US date is currently set. [Read more…]

Paranoia Trailer – Liam Hemsworth takes on Gary Oldman & Harrison Ford

June 6, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Corporate thrillers are often a difficult sell because it’s tough to make them look all that interesting in the space of 2 minutes and 30 seconds, as even with plenty of action, it’s still men in suits looking serious. It’s a slightly problem with Paranoia, although at least the trailer suggests it could be okay.

Liam Hemsworth stars as Adam Cassidy, an ambitious young man trying to get ahead in his entry-level job at a telecommunications firm. After he makes a costly mistake, the company CEO (Oldman) agrees not to turn him in if he spies on Jock Goddard (Harrison Ford), Nicholas’ mentor and a rival executive. Amber Heard is set to play a potential love interest for Adam, who works at the company he is spying on.

Robert Luketic is directing from a screenplay by Jason Dean Hall, which he adapted from the novel of the same name by Joseph Finder. Lucas Till, Embeth Davidtz, Amber Heard, Julian McMahon. The film hits US cinemas on August 16th, but no UK date is currently set. [Read more…]

Javier Bardem Joins The Gunman & Will Also Have A Most Violent Year

June 6, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

javier-bardemJavier Bardem is going to be busy, as TheWrap reports that he’s lined up two new roles. He’s signed up to star in J.C. Chandor’s A Most Violent Year and is also in talks to co-star with Sean Penn in The Gunman.

Bardem is the first name attached to A Most Violent Year. Based on an original screenplay by Chandor, who directed Margin Call, the film will have Javier as the a hero, but there’s no info on the plot. We’re presuming though that there’ll be plenty of violence taking place over a year. Shooting is scheduled to begin in Manhattan this autumn.

Originally called Prone Gunman, The Gunman is based on a novel by Jean-Patrick Manchette. It follows an international operative (Penn) who is betrayed by his handlers and goes on the run. There’s no specifics on Bardem’s role, although it is suggested he’ll be the villain in this one. Pierre Morel (Taken) is set to direct.

Nikolaj Coster-Waldau Will Lead The Gods Of Egypt For Director Alex Proyas

June 6, 2013 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

Nikolaj-Coster-WaldauThere’s been a lot of interest in Greek mythology in the last few years, but now Alex Proyas (Dark City, I Robot) is hoping people will enjoy a bit on Ancient Egyptian fun, as he’s bust planning the fantasy epic Gods Of Egypt.

Now he’s got his lead actor, as he’s cast Game Of Thrones star Nikolaj Coster-Waldau as sky god Horus. TheWrap reports that the film ‘is set in ancient Egypt against the legendary world of great pyramids and sphinxes… Horus, the god of the sky, teams up with a human thief and Hathor, the goddess of love, on a magical quest to avenge the death of his father, Osiris.’

Hopefully this project will have more luck than Proyas’ taken on Paradise Lost, which was fully cast and ready to go, before it got cancelled due to worries about the budget and its box office prospects. It could certainly make for an interesting movie.

New Friday The 13th & South Park Movies Likely In the Next 5 Years

June 6, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

South-Park-s15-dvd-coverHollywood can be a very complex place, with multiple studios owning different bits of the rights to major franchises, which often holds up production on sequels and remake (just look at The Hobbit, which was delayed by a year because MGM help co-production rights but ran out of cash).

However new instalments of Friday The 13th and South Park have become far more likely now, as it’s been revealed that Warner gave up its part of the rights to films based on the franchises for a period on five years. The reason it did so was so that it could co-produce Chris Nolans’ Interstellar with Paramount.

Many had wondered why two major studios had cosied up for the movie, but it seems it was because Warner was very keen to stay in business with Nolan and Paramount agreed because they got some juicy bonuses on top of the financing.

The fact Paramount and Warner both had stakes in the rights to Friday The 13th and South Park has proved a problem with getting sequels made. Both Paramount and Warner Bros. had to be 50-50 partners on the 2009 Friday the 13th reboot, and the reason that a sequel has not been made yet is largely due to the complicated rights issues. The studios were also partners on 1999’s South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut, since Warner Bros. still retained some film rights to the property from its previous ownership of Comedy Central.

Warner has now given up its rights, but there’s a ticking clock, as they’ve only done so for the next five years, giving Paramount that window to get new movies into production without having to worry about complex negotiations over sharing things with Warner.
