Jaime King And Jamie Chung On For Sin City: A Dame to Kill For

October 30, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

When Sin City was released in 2005, we were initially told two sequels were incoming and they’d both arrive within a couple of years. However its only now in 2012 that cameras are finally starting to roll on a second movie, Sin City: A Dame To Kill For.

With filming starting on Monday, THR also got news that Jaime King will be back in the Sin City world, while Jamie Chung has also joined the cast. King will play Wendy, twin sister of the prostitute Goldie she portrayed in the original. Chung meanwhile will take over from Devon Aoki as the sword-wielding Miho.

Mickey Rourke (Marv), Jessica Alba (Nancy), and Rosario Dawson (Gail) will all reprise their roles from Sin City. However there are apparently still many major roles left to be cast (as it’s all green screen, things can be shot separately, meaning it’s not as important all the cast is there when shooting starts), including Dwight, who was originally played by Clive Owen. Some have suggested the actor is returning, although Dwight undergoes facial reconstructive surgery in this story, and will look like a completely different man. Also yet to be cast is the gambler Johnny, and Ava, originally written for Angelina Jolie.

Robert Rodriguez and Frank Miller are directing from a screenplay they co-wrote with William Monahan. A US release date of October 4th, 2013 has already been set.

Frank Grillo Confirmed As Crossbones In Captain America 2

October 30, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

A couple of weeks ago, rumours surface that The Grey and Warrior actor Frank Grillo was in the running for a role in Captain America 2, with speculation that he would play villain Crossbones. Now Variety has confirmed the news, and while many wondered if Crossbones would be the henchman to someone else, it appear he’s the key main villain in the movie.

The character started out in Marvel comics in 1989 as Brock Rumlow, the leader of the Savage Crims gang in New York. He later went on to serve as a henchman of Red Skull under the code name Crossbones (hence why some wondered whether he’d be the main bad guy in the film or not).

The actor joins Chris Evans and Samuel L. Jackson, who return as Steve Rogers and Nick Fury, along with Anthony Mackie as Falcon. Anthony Russo and Joe Russo are directing from a screenplay by Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely. Production will start next spring.

Quartet Trailer – Take a fresh look at Dustin Hoffman’s directorial debut

October 29, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

It’s interesting that after a 50-year acting career, Dustin Hoffman would decide that his directorial debut should be about British retirees, but considering the success of The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, perhaps he’s onto something. Quartet, based on Ronald Harwood’s play, screened at the London Film Festival a few days ago, and now a new trailer has arrive. The film is about Cecily (Pauline Collins), Reggie (Tom Courteney) and Wilfred (Billy Connolly), who are in a home for retired opera singers. Every year, on October 10the, there is a concert to celebrate Verdi’s birthday and they take part. Jean (Maggie Smith), who used to be married to Reggie, arrives at the home and disrupts their equilibrium. She still acts like a diva, but she refuses to sing. Still, the show must go on… and it does. The film is currently due out in the UK on January 4th, 2013.

Michael Pitt Is Going To Rob The Mob

October 29, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Now that Michael Pitt has left Boardwalk Empire behind, he has more time for the type of indie projects he’s always loved. With the American Film Market coming up, it’s been announced he’s attached to a movie called Rob The Mob, which will be looking for buyers at the event.

The film will see Pitt and Nina Arianda as a kind of modern-day Bonnie and Clyde who decide to lighten the pockets of some of New York City’s most notorious mobsters. While their plan is to knock over some criminal-run underground clubs, their heists lead them to something much bigger than they anticipated, inciting not just the mob but also the FBI and their own families to join the hunt to track them down.

Raymond De Felitta, who has directed movie like City Island and Café Society, will helm Rob The Mob, which has been written by Jonathan Fernandez. It isn’t clear when the movie might shoot. (Source: Deadline)

Cate Blanchett & Bill Murray Join Monuments Men

October 29, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Earlier this year George Clooney signed up to direct and star in Monuments Men, which at the time Sony was due to fully finance. However Sony has apparently realised that with Ghostbusters 3 now due to shoot next year, it’s rather over-committed on projects and so has gone to Fox and gotten them to split costs on the $50 million movie with them.

Fox initially hoped to buy the project outright, but despite their financial constraints, Sony was keen to hold onto half of the film. The movie will be based on the nonfiction book, The Monuments Men: Allied Heroes, Nazi Thieves, and the Greatest Treasure Hunt in History by Robert M. Edsel, tells the story of the US government’s efforts to retrieve artwork stolen by the Nazis and the art experts whose skills were put to use in the campaign. The title comes from the name given to the American and British art historians and museum curators who helped the military track down the stolen pieces.

THR also reports that Cate Blanchett is attached as the female lead, and Bill Murray is said to be involved as well. Unfortunately there’s no news on what roles they might be playing. Jean Dujardin recently entered negotiations to star in the movie too.

Christian Bale May Find Transcendence Alongside Johnny Depp

October 29, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Last week it was revealed that Christopher Nolan’s longtime cinematographer, Wally Pfister, was planning his first movie as a director, and Johnny Depp is in talks to star. Now the LA Times reports that there are three main roles, and that while Depp will hopefully take one of them, Pfister is hoping Christian Bale will take another part in Transcendence.

Of course, that’s very different from saying Bale will indeed sign on, especially as he’s known for being incredibly picky about his projects. However as he’s worked with Pfister on the likes of the Dark Knight movies and The Prestige, and Chris Nolan will executive produce Transcendence, there’s at least a decent chance he can get Bale involved.

Other actors who’ve apparently been contacted about the film include Noomi Rapace, James McAvoy, Tobey Maguire and Christoph Waltz, although again it’s not known how serious those discussions have, and we’d be stunned if they all ended up in the movie.

As with Nolan’s movies, there’s huge secrecy surrounding the film, so not much is known about it. However it’s likely to shoot this winter in LA.

John Logan To Write Bond 24, With An Autumn 2014 Release Already Eyed

October 29, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

MGM’s bankruptcy meant there was a four-year gap between Quantum of Solace and Skyfall, but the studio, along with partner Sony Pictures, is wasting no time getting the next James Bond movie in motion. Although Skyfall has only just opened in 25 markets (taking a stonking $77 million, which is incredibly impressive considering none of those markets was the US), has hired John Logan to write the screenplay for Bond 24, with an autumn 2014 release date already being targeted, according to THR.

John Logan rewrote the existing Skyfall script by Neal Purvis and Robert Wade, who have co-written the last five 007 movies since 1999’s The World Is Not Enough. John Logan will write the Bond 24 screenplay by himself, with the writing duo stepping aside and moving on to other non-Bond projects. It’s also believed Logan has been contracted to write Bond 25, which suggests the possibility the films will be closely linked.

Daniel Craig will return as James Bond, and supporting stars Naomie Harris, Ben Whishaw, and Ralph Fiennes have begun negotiations to reprise their roles from Skyfall.

Argo Goes Top Of The US Box Office, With Skyfall Going Ballistic Internationally

October 29, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

It was certainly a slow weekend at the US box office, with no new movie coming that really excited audiences. It allowed Argo, which has been showing strong legs, to top the box office on its third week of release. Ben Affleck’s film dropped only 24% from last weekend to add another $12 million, for a total of $60 million so far.

The highest new entry was Cloud Atlas, which placed third with $9.4 million. It a disappointing but not surprising for a movie which may look too unusual and complex for the average moviegoer. Nor has it been helped by glowing reviews.

Despite it being Halloween in a few days, Silent Hill: Revelation took only $8 million, far less than the $20 million the first Silent Hill movie took on its debut. The only other new entry in the top 10 was Fun Size, which tanked with just $4 million to place 10th. Even that was better than the Gerard Butler surfing flick Chasing Mavericks, which made just $2.2 million on its opening.

While the studios had little cheer at the US box office, MGM & Sony will be far happier about the debut of Skyfall in 25 international markets. The film took a stonking $77 million, including what’s believed to be the second biggest three-day opening ever in the UK, behind Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2. It’s opened ahead on Quantum Of Solace in nearly all markets its debuted in, suggesting it will become the highest grossing Bond to date, eventually overtaking Casino Royale’s $430 million.

Rank Title Weekend Gross (millions) Total Gross to date (millions)
1 Argo $12.3 $60.7
2 Hotel Transylvania $9.5 $130.4
3 Cloud Atlas $9.4 $9.4
4 Paranormal Activity 4 $8.6 $42.6
5 Taken 2 $8.0 $117.2
6 Silent Hill: Revelation $8.0 $8.0
7 Here Comes The Boom $5.5 $30.6
8 Sinister $5.0 $39.5
9 Alex Cross $5.0 $19.3
10 Fun Size $4.0 $4.0

First Look At Mads Mikkelsen As Hannibal Lecter In New TV Show

October 26, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

There have been a lot of discontented grumblings about the idea of moving the character of Hannibal Lecter from film to TV, but it was certainly positive when Bryan Fuller (Dead Like Me, Pushing Daisies) signed up to oversee the show and Mads Mikkelsen came onboard to play Hannibal.

Now the first stills from Hannibal have arrived, via scans from the latest issue of Entertainment Weekly. They show Mikkelsen taking to the role with relish, Hugh Dancy as Will Graham, and Laurence Fishburne as Jack Crawford. The show is a prequel to the other Hannibal stories, looking at how Graham worked with psychiatrist Lecter before he discovered the doctor was actually a serial killing cannibal. Fuller has said he wants to look at how the two men are two sides of the same coin.

The show is expected to debut in the US early next year and should come to the UK not long afterwards.

New A Good Day To Die Hard Trailer – John McClane takes his unique brand of devastation international

October 26, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

A few weeks ago we had a brief teaser for A Good Day To Die Hard, but now we get slightly more in a new promo for the film, which concentrates on the fact that having caused plenty of destruction in the US, John McClane is now heading to Moscow to blow that up too. Once in Russia he teams up with his estranged son (Jai Courteney) to take down some bad guys. The film’s due out February 14th, 2013, so it’ll be a Valentine’s movie for the guys.
