Guardians of the Galaxy Eyes Director James Gunn

August 20, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Marvel Studios is turning to a perhaps unexpected name for their next big franchise in the making, Guardians of the Galaxy, eyeing up-and-coming director James Gunn for the film. Gunn cut his teeth working at Troma before penning both Scooby Doo live-action cinematic movies and the Dawn Of The Dead remake. He then directed the cult hit Slither and the indie vigilante comedy Super.

While he hasn’t helmed anything on the scale of Guardians, THR reports that Marvel thinks he’s their man. His possible hiring may well be down to the influence of Joss Whedon, as Gunn as good friends with Joss Whedon and the Firefly crew. As Whedon has signed a deal to helm The Avengers 2 and help oversee the direction Marvel’s interlinked universe takes, it’s like he had a hand in suggesting Gunn.

No deal has been signed yet, but the director is currently Marvel’s top choice for this sci-fi adventure, which finds a group of intergalactic outlaws and a U.S. pilot trying to make off with an undisclosed object that the entire universe seems to want. The studio is said to love James Gunn’s sensibility, and his keen ability to mix action, horror, and comedy.

James Gunn isn’t the only name Marvel has sought out, though. If a deal isn’t reached the studio is also looking at Peyton Reed, best known for the cheerleading comedy Bring It On, and the team of Ryan Fleck and Anna Boden, who co-directed the critically acclaimed Half Nelson.

THR also offers these details on Guardians, “The movie’s lineup will include Drax the Destroyer, a human resurrected as a green warrior with the sole purpose of killing Thanos (the villain in the Avengers final-scene tease); Groot, a giant tree-man; Star-Lord, a gun-toting half-human/half-alien intergalactic vigilante; Rocket Raccoon, a genetically engineered animal with a knack for guns and explosives; and Gamora, the last survivor of her species who was saved by Thanos to be his assassin but now battles him.”

The film, which seems likely to be CG animation (although there are some reports it could go live action), is due for release in 2014.

Top Gun Director Tony Scott Dies In Apparent Suicide

August 20, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Hollywood is in shock today after it was revealed that Top Gun and True Romance director Tony Scott has died after apparently throwing himself off the Vincent Thomas Bridge in Los Angeles’ San Pedro area. The police are treating it as as a suicide, with the LA Times reporting the police found contact information inside Scott’s Toyota Prius (which was parked on the bridge), which led authorities to a suicide note in his office.

No motivation is known for the 68-year-old taking his own life.

Scott’s first film was the lesbian-themed vampire movie The Hunger in 1983, but it was his commercial work that led to his being hired for his big breakthrough, 1986’s Top Gun. While over the year many criticised his hyper-fast, quick-cut style, he had huge success, making the likes of Beverly Hills Cop II, Days Of Thunder, True Romance, Crimson Tide, Enemy Of The State, Spy Game, Man On Fire and Unstoppable.

He’s also much loved as a mentor to many other filmmakers, taking a personal interest in emerging talent and helping them get a leg up in Hollywood. He was, of course, the younger brother of Oscar-winning helmer Tony Scott, and is survived by a wife and two children.

Since news of his death broke, the Twittersphere has been filled with Tweets about the news, such Moon helmer Duncan Jones saying, ‘Just heard about Tony Scott news. Horrible… Tony was a truly lovely man who took me under his wing & ignited my passion to make films.’ Ron Howard tweeting ‘No more Tony Scott movies. Tragic day’ and Donnie Darko’s Richard Kelly adding ‘Tony Scott was the ultimate mentor – once he understood you… he released the glorious hounds of inner city research, dangerous frontiers.’

Tony Scott – 21st June 1944-19th August 2012 – RIP

The Last Stand Trailer – Arnie is back in action!

August 17, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Arnie is planning to come back with a vengeance, with all sorts of projects in the works. The Expendables 2 has just hit cinemas, but his real return as a leading man will come with The Last Stand when it’s released January 2013. After leaving his LAPD narcotics post following a bungled operation that left him wracked with remorse and regret, Sheriff Ray Owens (Schwarzenegger) moved out of Los Angeles and settled into a life fighting what little crime takes place in sleepy border town Sommerton Junction. But that peaceful existence is shattered when Gabriel Cortez (Eduardo Noriega), the most notorious, wanted drug kingpin in the western hemisphere, makes a deadly yet spectacular escape from an FBI prisoner convoy. With the help of a fierce band of lawless mercenaries led by the icy Burrell (Peter Stormare), Cortez begins racing towards the US-Mexico border at 250 mph in a specially-outfitted Corvette ZR1 with a hostage in tow. It’s nice in the trailer that Arnie acknowledges he’s getting older, while still piling on the action.

Pierre Morel Takes On The Hitman’s Bodyguard

August 17, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

The success of Taken made it seem like Pierre Morel was going to become a big director in Hollywood. While he’s released From Paris With Love since then, many of his other planned projects, such as Dune, Bastille Day and Ouija have fallen apart.

Now Morel is trying to move forwards with another movie, as he is in negotiations to take the helm on The Hitman’s Bodyguard. Tom O’Connor wrote the screenplay, which landed on the 2011 Black List. The movie is about a protection agent who is assigned to escort a hitman to The Hague, where he will testify against a war criminal.

David Ellison will produce through his Skydance Productions company, alongside Dana Goldberg. It isn’t known when the movie might shoot. (Source: THR)

The Avengers 2 Gets A Release Date, When Will It Be?

August 17, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

If you want to ensure a good release date, you need to stake it out early, and that certainly seems to be Marvel’s thinking, as they’ve now set a release day for The Avengers 2, amost three years before it will arrive! However it does mean we’ve not got a date for your diary, so when is the movie coming?

Well, here’s the statement from Marvel’s parent company, Disney, ‘The Walt Disney Studios has announced a release date for Marvel Studios’ sequel to the biggest Super Hero blockbuster and third highest grossing film of all time, Marvel’s The Avengers. Joss Whedon returns to write and direct the Untitled Marvel’s Avengers Sequel set for release May 1, 2015.’

Sadly there’s no more info than that, although with Thor 2, Iron Man 3, Captain America 2 and Guardians Of The Galaxy (and possibly Ant Man) due before them, there’ll certainly be plenty of opportunity to build up to mash-up.

Wolverine, Guardians Of The Galaxy & Mad Max 4 Get Official Plot Synopses

August 17, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

We’ve got a bit more info now for The Wolverine, Marvel’s Guardians Of The Galaxy and Mad Max: Fury Road, as official plot synopses for the movies have been released, letting us know more about what direction they’ll be taking.

So here they are:
The Wolverine (via Hitfix): ‘Based on the celebrated comic book arc, The Wolverine finds Logan, the eternal warrior and outsider, in Japan. There, samurai steel will clash with adamantium claw as Logan confronts a mysterious figure from his past in an epic battle that will leave him forever changed.’

The comic arc they’re talking about is by Chris Claremont and Frank Miller, and helped reinvent the character for a new generation. Director James Mangold has also been tweeting about his inspiration, saying ‘movies I think about as I make #TheWolverine : Eastwood’s Josie Wales, Powell’s Back Narcissus, Hitchcock’s Rear Window, Marnie, Vertigo’, ‘more : Ozu’s Floating Weeds, Kurosawa’s High & Low, Polanski’s Chinatown, everything by Wong Kar Wai And Chris Doyle, Besson’s Professional.’

Mad Max: Fury Road: ‘Principal photography began July 9 on the dystopian action adventure Mad Max: Fury Road, a Kennedy Miller Mitchell production written and directed by Mad Max creator and Academy Award winner George Miller (Happy Feet). The film will be presented by Warner Bros. Pictures in association with Village Roadshow Pictures. It will be distributed worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company, and in select territories by Village Roadshow Pictures.

‘Mad Max: Fury Road – the fourth in the franchise’s history – stars Tom Hardy (The Dark Knight Rises) in the title role of Max Rockatansky, alongside Oscar winner Charlize Theron (Monster, Prometheus) as Imperator Furiosa.

‘According to Miller, “Mad Max is caught up with a group of people fleeing across the Wasteland in a War Rig driven by the Imperator Furiosa. This movie is an account of the Road War which follows. It is based on the Word Burgers of the History Men and eyewitness accounts of those who survived.”

‘Mad Max: Fury Road also stars Nicholas Hoult (X-Men: First Class) as Nux; Hugh Keays-Byrne (Mad Max, Sleeping Beauty) as Immortan Joe; and Nathan Jones (Conan the Barbarian) as Rictus Erectus. Collectively known as The Wives, Zoë Kravitz (X-Men: First Class) plays Toast, Riley Keough (Magic Mike) is Capable, and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley (Transformers: Dark of the Moon) is Splendid. They are joined by supermodel Abbey Lee Kershaw as The Dag and Courtney Eaton as Fragile, both of whom are making their big screen debuts. Also featured in the movie are Josh Helman as Slit, Jennifer B. Hagan as Miss Giddy, and singer/songwriter/performer iOTA as Coma-Doof Warrior.’

Guardians Of The Galaxy (via It’s On The Grid): The film is ‘About a U.S. pilot who ends up in space in the middle of a universal conflict and goes on the run with futuristic ex-cons who have something everyone wants.’

It seems likely that the astronaut in question is Peter Quill, aka the character Star-Lord, who was pictured in the Guardians concept art released at Comic Con. The thing they’re looking for is likely either the Cosmic Cube or the Infinity Guantlet, both big power items in the Marvel Universe that have already either played in or been teased in Marvel Studios films. It’s also likely Thanos will appear in the movie.
