Early marketing for The Master has been a bit mysterious, but now a new trailer for The Master has debuted, which gives a much better look at Paul Thomas Anderson’s movie. There’s also been an attempt to downplay any link between the film and scientology, but it’s difficult to ignore them in this trailer. Set in America in the years following World War II, a charismatic intellectual (Philip Seymour Hoffman) launches a faith-based organization and taps a young drifter (Joaquin Phoenix) as his right-hand man. But as the faith begins to gain a fervent following, the onetime vagabond finds himself questioning the belief system he has embraced, and his mentor.

21 Jump Street 2 May Shoot This Autumn, Plus Jumanji Reboot Planned
After 21 Jump Street grossed $200 million from a $42 million budget, it’s little surprise that Sony wants a sequel, but it is quite unusual they’re pushing one through so quick, as according to a THR interview with Sony exec. Mark Belgrad, it could shoot as early as this autumn.
Tatum and Hill were presumably contracted for a sequel when they signed up for the first film, and Belgrad says they’ll both be back for the follow-up. The exec is particularly excited about Tatum, saying “There are very few actors… who can do romance, action and comedy. We’re in business with two of them, Channing Tatum and Will Smith.”
And talking of Smith, Belgrad says there’s already talk of Men In Black 4, following the $600 million success on the third installment. He says, “We believe it is an ongoing franchise,” he said. “We’re going to do [another one], but we don’t have clarity yet on how it should be done.”
He also mentions that there’s a reboot of Jumanji in the works. That would seem a good idea, as a lot of kids love the plot of the 1995 movie, although the film itself is pretty flawed.
The interview has also led to a lot of speculation that Marc Webb won’t return to direct Amazing Spider-man 2, but Belgrad doesn’t actually say. He merely gives a diplomatic answer saying they’d like him back but nothing has been signed.
Chris Hemsworth Wanted For Spielberg’s Robopocalypse
With Lincoln set to reach theatres at the end of the year, Spielberg is starting to think harder about his next movie, Robopocalyse, and according to Deadline, he’s decided that he wants Thor himself, Chris Hemsworth, to star.
It appears the director has met with the actor in secret, although it isn’t clear whether Hemsworth has said yes or if it’s merely preliminary talks. What is known is that no official offer has yet been made. The film itself is based on Daniel H. Wilson’s epic novel about the human race’s attempt to survive an apocalyptic robot uprising.
A release date of April 25th, 2014 has already been set for Robopocalyse, so Spielberg is going to have to get casting and ramping up pre-production soon, so there’s time to shoot and complete the massive special effects. The movie is an important one for Spielberg, as Dreamworks is currently backed by Indian company Reliance Entertainment, who are very keen that Steven makes big budget, mass market spectacles, especially after Dreamworks’ recent movies have had variable success at the box office.
Noah Adds Kevin Durand & Dakota Goyo
Director Darren Aronofsky is bulking up his cast for Noah, both literally and figuratively, with 6’6″ actor Kevin Durand signing on for the film. Dakota Goyo, who starred in Real Steel alongside Kevin Durand, has also joined the cast as the younger version of Noah, according to Variety.
The bbilical story follows Noah (Russell Crowe), who has grown tired of the way humans have treated God’s creation of Earth. Kevin Durand will play a ‘watcher,’ a massive giant who helps Noah and his family (biblical giant such as Goliath are often believed to be the offspring of angels and humans). Jennifer Connelly, Douglas Booth, and Logan Lerman star as Noah’s wife and sons, with Emma Watson, Ray Winstone, and Anthony Hopkins also signed up.
Darren Aronofsky is directing from a screenplay he co-wrote with Ari Handel. Shooting is expeted to begin very soon.
Have The Villains Of Thor 2 Been Revealed?
Last weekend, Marvel released a lot of news about their upcoming movies, but while they announced the sequel to Thor would be callled Thor: The Dark World, they didn’t have much to say about the plot. However now it appears we know who the villains are for the film, which begins shooting this August.
The movie is said to have to have a stronger Norse influence, and will have a very ‘Viking’ centric vibe. Mads Mikkelsen was originally set to play the villain, but recently dropped out. While we don’t know who is replacing him just yet, we now have an idea about whom he was set to play. In an interview with I Review Too that dates back to early June (dug up by Comic Book Movie), stuntman James Grogan let it slip that Thor will be going up against the Dark Elves of Svartlalfheim in the movie. Which makes sense, considering the new title revealed during Comic-Con 2012.
Here is what Grogan had to say, “The other day for example, this is quite random but I was working on Thor: The Dark World. I had a load of stunt guys in and the director came in and he said ‘Look, we want you all to be elves,’ and I was like ‘What the hell is an elf anyway?’ and he said ‘I want you all to walk around like these supernatural animals,’ honestly it was the most ridiculous thing ever but you just have to not be self aware and get on with it.”
This has led to speculation that Mads Mikkelsen was cast to play Malekith The Accursed, ruler of the Dark Elves, and a not very friendly guy. This blue, pointed-eared villain has super human strength and speed, along with the ability to teleport and project energy. Malekith’s biggest storyline in the comics finds him teaming up with Loki to retrieve the Casket of Ancient Winters, which allows its user to control the icy weather conditions on Niflheim. It also makes its user younger.
Of course, this plotline has not yet been confirmed by the studio. Thor: The Dark World comes to theaters November 8th, 2013.
The Wolverine Lands Svetlana Khodchenkova As The Viper
Last week it appeared that Jessica Biel would play The Viper in The Wolverine, but talks broke down and with shooting starting relatively soon, filmmakers were left scrambling to find a replacement. Now they’ve cast Russian actress Svetlana Khodchenkova to play the role.
The actress has appeared in a slew of Russian productions, but she is best known stateside for portraying Irina in last year’s Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy. In many ways she’s a better fit for the role than Biel, as The Viper hails from an unknown Eastern European country. The character has a history with the title character throughout the Marvel comics – a friendly ally at times and a conniving enemy at others. It isn’t known exactly how the character will fit into The Wolverine plot.
James Mangold is directing from a screenplay by Christopher McQuarrie and Mark Bomback. The story picks up after X-Men Origins: Wolverine, following Logan (Hugh Jackman) to Japan, where he searches for more clues about his true identity. A July 26th, 2013 release date has already been set. (Source: Twitch)
Lena Headey & Jared Harris Join Mortal Instruments
The fantasy adaptation The Mortal Instruments, now titled The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones to make it more franchise friendly, has added Lena Headey, Jared Harris, and newcomer Godfrey Gao to its growing cast, according to Deadline.
The adaptation of Cassandra Clare’s novel series is about Clary Fray (Lily Collins), a young woman living in New York City who learns she is a descendant of Shadowhunters, a secret cadre of young half-angel warriors locked in an ancient battle to protect our world from demons. After the disappearance of her mother, Clary must join forces with a group of Shadowhunters, who introduce her to a dangerous alternate New York called Downworld, filled with demons, warlocks, vampires, werewolves and other deadly creatures.
Lena Headey is playing Jocelyn Fray, Jared Harris portrays Hodge Starkweather, and Godfrey Gao has signed on to play Magnus Bane. Others already cast include Jamie Campbell Bower, Jemima West, Robert Sheehan, Robert Maillet, and Kevin Durand.
The Mortal Instruments is a series of six young adult fantasy books, so there’s plenty of room for a franchise if the first movie works out. Principal photography will begin August 20, 2012 in Toronto, with Harald Zwart (The Karate Kid) directing.
Kenneth Branagh Getting Villainous In Jack Ryan Reboot
Kenneth Branagh has signed on to pull double duty on the planned reboot of Jack Ryan, as he’s already signed up to direct the movie and is now in talks to portray the main villain, according to THR.
Kenneth Branagh stepped in to direct the movie in March, after Jack Bender was forced to drop out due to scheduling issues. Now Kenneth Branagh is in negotiations to portray the Russian villain, who hatches a plan to destroy the American economy by making the dollar practically worthless.
Chris Pine is still attached to play Jack Ryan, taking Tom Clancy’s character back to his early days as a former Marine working as a financial analyst in Moscow, who discovers this plot against his home country and does whatever he can to stop it.
Kenneth Branagh is directing from a script that was most recently worked on by David Koepp. It isn’t known when production will begin.
Jayne Mansfield’s Car International Trailer
The first trailer for Billy Bob Thornton’s directorial venture, Jayne Mansfield’s Car, has debuted. Thornton also co-wrote the screenplay with Jane Espenson, which is about the culture clash of two families from different continents in 1969. Robert Duvall plays a man left to raise his children after his wife leaves him and goes to England to start a new family. However after the wife dies, she requests to be buried in the States, which brings together the woman’s American and English families for the first time – and not surprisingly, things get complicated. No UK release is currently set.
Gwyneth Paltrow Goes Foodie In Blood, Bones & Butter
Gwyneth Paltrow sure loves food. She’s written a cookbook and made TV series were she travels around learning about different regions’ cuisine. Now THR reports that she’s planning to star in and produce Blood, Bones & Butter, a film based on Gabrielle Hamilton’s food memoir.
The book is about Hamilton’s unconventional background, as she is the youngest of five children born to a French mother and an artist father who made the sets for the Ringling Bros. and Barnum and Bailey Circus. This eventually led her on an unusual course to becoming a chef. She is now the owner and chef of New York’s Prune restaurant also is a trained writer with an MFA from the University of Michigan.
Paltrow wants to take on this tale, with her and fellow producers currently looking for writers to take on the script.
