As part of their Comic-Con panel, Disney unveiled a fun new trailer for Frankeweenie, which reveals more plot and is done in the entertaining style of a 1950s-type horror movie promo. It gives a great look at the stop motion film, and shows that while it may be in black and white, it has a beautiful style, as you’d expect from director Tim Burton. The movie will hit UK cinemas on October 17th.

Stephen Daldry Sought For Wicked Film Adaptation
The musical Wicked actually started its life being developed as a movie as Universal, before heading off to Broadway and becoming one of the most successful shows ever. Even since it became massive on stage, there’s been talk about Universal mounting it as a big budget film, but it’s always been on the backburner.
Now it seems they’re ready to put it back on the fast track, and according to Deadline they’re hoping to woo Stephen Daldry to direct. He’d certainly seem a good choice, as he’s a veteran of both stage and screen, and knows plenty about mounting a musical, such as directing the West End version of his film hit Billy Elliot. Universal is also looking towards Disney’s Oz The Great And Powerful, and betting that all thing Oz will be big business after that movie hits screen early next year.
Wicked, based on Gregory Maguire’s books, looks at the youth of the green-skinned Ephalba, who will one day becomes the Wicked Witch of the West. She doesn’t start out evil though, and only becomes an outsider because of other people, including the rather duplicitous ‘good witch’ Glinda.
At the moment, getting Daldry to direct is more what Universal wants than a reality, but they’re likely to be courting him over the next few weeks.
Mads Mikkelsen Out As Thor 2 Villain
A couple of months ago, Marvel announced that they signed Casino Royale’s Mads Mikkelsen to play the villain on Thor 2. However now it’s been revealed the studio will have to find a new bad guy for the movie, as Mads Mikkelsen has revealed that he won’t star in this follow-up to Thor due to his commitment to the NBC pilot Hannibal.
In a recent interview with Zoomin Movies, he said, “Yeah, that’s not happening unfortunately. I had a meeting with them, but they were a little too late. And then Hannibal came in, and everything just came in the same period, so now it’s not happening.”
This is the second project in as many days to encounter a stumbling block because of Hannibal. Director David Slade was forced to bow out of 20th Century Fox’s Daredevil reboot as he is directing the NBC pilot.
Reese Witherspoon On For Gone Girl Adaptation
20th Century Fox has inked a huge seven figure deal for the rights to Gillian Flynn’s New York Times bestseller Gone Girl, with Bruna Papandrea and Reese Witherspoon producing for Pacific Standard, according to Deadline.
The story follows a woman who goes missing on her fifth wedding anniversary, and all signs point to her husband being the killer. The marriage has been marked by arguments, cheating and conflict, but has the husband really killed his wife? Gillian Flynn is taking on screenwriting duties herself (although normally what happens is an author takes the first crack, but someone else wwill do the donkey work later one). The author currently has three bestsellers on the list all at once, and has two other movie deals currently in the works.
It is not known at this time if Reese Witherspoon is setting up the project for herself to star in, although it seems likely. The current plan is to have the movie in cinemas in 2014.
First Look At Ben Whishaw As Q In Skyfall
When Sam Mendes had his first press conference for Skyfall, he was very coy about who certain people would be playing, including Ben Whishaw. Most speculation centred on him playing the latest take on the character Q, but it’s only now that’s been confirmed, and the first image of him in the role has been released.
Whishaw becomes the fourth actor to play Bond’s quartermaster affectionately known as Q. The role began with Peter Burton as Major Boothroyd in Dr. No, followed by Desmond Llewelyn (in 17 Bond films between 1963-1999), and John Cleese (who appeared as Q’s assistant, R, in The World is Not Enough and was later promoted to Q in Die Another Day).
Producers Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli commented, “It’s a real thrill to confirm the return of Q in Skyfall played by the enormously talented, Ben Whishaw. We are delighted to have this beloved character back in the series.”
Skyfall hits UK cinemas on October 26th.
Chris Columbus Taking Creepy Magazine to the Big Screen
News has started to spill out of Comic-Con, including that Harry Potter and Percy Jackson director Chris Columbus is teaming up with New Comic Company for a four-part horror anthology movie based on Creepy Magazine. The filmmaker will write and produce one of the four segments, according to THR.
The Warren Publishing horror comic book magazine ran from 1963 to 1984, and featured a number of notable contributors such as Spider-Man co-creator Steve Ditko, Wally Wood, and Gene Colan. This new anthology will follow the same type of format used in Tales from the Crypt. Here’s what Chris Columbus has to say about the project, “I am thrilled to be immersed once again in the world of Creepy and Eerie. They featured some of the most important comic book artists of the time and were incredibly influential in my desire to become a filmmaker. It is really exciting to have the opportunity to bring these unique tales to the screen and share them with today’s audiences.”
Although Columbus is know known for relatively family friendly fantasies, he started out writing the likes of Gremlins, so could be a good fit here.
Will Smith Plans Directorial Debut With Cain & Abel Thriller
Will Smith is looking to make his feature film directorial debut, and while many actors try something small and relatively easy (at least from a technical standpoint) to start with, Will is going for with an adaptation of the biblical Cain and Abel story, but with vampires mixed in.
The film is being set up at Sony Pictures through Smith’s Overbrook Entertainment. It won’t be Will Smith’s next project, and it is unclear if he will also appear in this tale of two brothers, one being the first human to ever be born, and the other the first human to die. When the project was initially announced, the script, by Dan Knauf and Smith’s brother-in-law Caleb Pinkett, added in vampires to the traditional story.
It isn’t known when Smith might want to shoot the movie. (Source: Deadline)
Oz The Great And Powerful Trailer
Comic-Con has kicked off an San Diego, but us normal people don’t have to miss out completely, as following it’s presentation at the event, Disney has now put the first trailer for Sam Raimi’s Oz The Great And Powerful online. It appears the movie will follow The Wizard Of Oz’s trick of having the real worls in black and white, while Oz will be in colour, although the fantastical world is has been given a bit of a CG makeover. Here’s the synopsis: ‘Disney’s fantastical adventure “Oz The Great and Powerful,” directed by Sam Raimi, imagines the origins of L. Frank Baum’s beloved character, the Wizard of Oz. When Oscar Diggs (James Franco), a small-time circus magician with dubious ethics, is hurled away from dusty Kansas to the vibrant Land of Oz, he thinks he’s hit the jackpot—fame and fortune are his for the taking—that is until he meets three witches, Theodora (Mila Kunis), Evanora (Rachel Weisz) and Glinda (Michelle Williams), who are not convinced he is the great wizard everyone’s been expecting. Reluctantly drawn into the epic problems facing the Land of Oz and its inhabitants, Oscar must find out who is good and who is evil before it is too late. Putting his magical arts to use through illusion, ingenuity—and even a bit of wizardry—Oscar transforms himself not only into the great and powerful Wizard of Oz but into a better man as well.’
Channing Tatum Says Magic Mike 2 May Be On The Way
I went to watch Magic Mike yesterday and I don’t think I’ve ever seen a cinema so chock full of women (and me). Indeed it’s been attracting such big audiences that despite only costing $12 million to make, it’s already grossed over $77 million in the US alone.
With numbers like that, the question becomes, will there be a sequel, especially as the movie certainly leaves the door open for one? According to the Channing Tatum, plans are indeed afoot. When asked during a Twitter interview for Glamour if there will be a Magic Mike 2, Tatum answered, “Yes, yes and yes! We’re working on the concept now. We want to flip the script and make it bigger.”
The actor’s producing partner Reid Carolin wrote the script for Magic Mike, based on Channing Tatum’s days as a 19-year-old male stripper. It isn’t known if Carolin is working on the sequel, or if they plan on bringing new writers in. It’s also too early to tell at this point if Steven Soderbergh will be back to direct a follow-up.
It’s also tough to know what Tatum means by ‘flip the script’? It suggests maybe part 2 will look at female strippers, but could just be an expression he used to say they want to do things on a bigger scale. If they do go female, it could be a mistake, as what’s made the first film such a success is the promise of sexy guys!
