Aaron Sorkin Writing Sony’s Steve Jobs Biopic

May 16, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

While there’s already a Steve Jobs biopic in production, starring Ashton Kutcher, which concentrates on the Apple founder’s early days, Sony is pushing ahead with its semi-official version, hiring Academy Award winning screenwriter Aaron Sorkin to adapt Walter
Isaacson’s best-selling biography.

Published late last year, Steve Jobs was Amazon’s best-selling book of 2011. In addition, the biography ranked #1 among bestselling hardcover books by a 2:1
margin, with sales of 2,246,569 in the US in 2011, according to Publisher’s Weekly. Aaron Sorkin won the Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay for his work on The Social Network. His other screenplays include Moneyball, Charlie Wilson’s War, The American President, Malice, and A Few Good Men.

Sony co-chairman Amy Pascal commented, “Steve Jobs’ story is unique: he was one of the most revolutionary and influential men not just of our time but of all time. There is no writer working in Hollywood today who is more capable of capturing such an extraordinary life for the screen than Aaron Sorkin; in his hands, we’re confident that the film will be everything that Jobs himself was: captivating, entertaining, and polarizing.” (Source: THR)

Scott Z. Burns Writing Rise of the Planet of the Apes Sequel

May 16, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Scott Z. Burns has some experience writing about mankind being under threat from an unusual source, as he wrote World War Z, which is set in the aftermath of a zombie holocaust. Now Fox is hoping he’ll be able to bring some of that expertise to their upcoming sequel to Rise of the Planet of the Apes, as he’s been hired to write the script.

According to THR, the story will pick up where the last film left off, shortly after Ceaser and his army overtake the Golden Gate Bridge. As the apes grow stronger in their intelligence, humankind is threatened to the point of extinction by a new virus, which causes a social structure collapse. By the end of the film, the apes will rise as the world’s new rulers.

Andy Serkis is set to reprise his role as Caesar, ruler of the Apes, in the Untitled Rise of the Planet of the Apes Sequel. Original director Rupert Wyatt is returning as well.

The Good Doctor Trailer – Orlando Bloom gets obsessed with a patient

May 15, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

It’s one of the rules of movies that any film title that begins with ‘The Good…’ is about someone who isn’t very good at all. It appears that law will continue with The Good Doctor, which sees Orland Bloom as Martin Blake, an ambitious but anxious young doctor, eager to impress his superiors and colleagues: Chief Resident Waylans (Rob Morrow), self-assured fellow intern Dan (Troy Garity) and no-nonsense nurse Theresa (Taraji P. Henson). But things are not going Martin’s way and he can’t seem to shake off his insecurities. When 18-year-old patient Diane (Riley Keough) is admitted for a kidney infection, Martin steps in, getting the much-needed boost of self-esteem he craves. But things take a dark turn as his enthusiasm begins to become an obsession. No UK release date is currently set, but it’s out in the US in August.

And is it just us, or does Bloom have the hairstyle of the 7-year-old schoolboy in this film?

The Amazing Spider-man Four-Minute ‘Super Preview’

May 15, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

While there were many groans when it was announced they were rebooting Spider-man so soon after Sam Raimi’s take on the character, the more we’ve seen, the cooler it’s looked, with Marc Webb’s film reinserting the wisecracking humour of the character, as well as having a rather cool look, which is partway between comic book and reality. Now a rather exciting four-minute preview has shown up, which gives us a great look at the movie.

Here’s the latest synopsis: ‘The Amazing Spider-Man is the story of Peter Parker (Andrew Garfield), an outcast high schooler who was abandoned by his parents as a boy, leaving him to be raised by his Uncle Ben (Martin Sheen) and Aunt May (Sally Field). Like most teenagers, Peter is trying to figure out who he is and how he got to be the person he is today. Peter is also finding his way with his first high school crush, Gwen Stacy (Emma Stone), and together, they struggle with love, commitment, and secrets. As Peter discovers a mysterious briefcase that belonged to his father, he begins a quest to understand his parents’ disappearance – leading him directly to Oscorp and the lab of Dr. Curt Connors (Rhys Ifans), his father’s former partner. As Spider-Man is set on a collision course with Connors’ alter-ego, The Lizard, Peter will make life-altering choices to use his powers and shape his destiny to become a hero.’ The film’s out July 4th.

Martin Scorsese Producing Rolls-Royce Biopic

May 15, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Rolls-Royce is already famed around the world for producing some of the most luxurious cars on the planet, but it seems Martin Scorsese thinks there’s more of interest about the company than that, as Variety reports that he’s teaming up with Richard Attenborough and Anthony Haas to produce a film called Silver Ghost, which will tell the story of how Charles Rolls and Henry Royce partnered up to create the car company.

Silver Ghost is described as a complex love story, not only between men and women, but men and machines. Set at the turn of the last century, it traces the story of Charles Rolls and Henry Royce, as well as the love affairs of the famed Beaulieu family (who started up the famed motor museum). Apparently one of the members of that family called the story a long-gestating ‘family secret’ but felt Scorsese, Attenborough and Haas would do the story justice and so have given them permission to go with it, although Variety doesn’t say exactly what that secret it.

Scorsese comments, “When I read the story of Silver Ghost, I was mesmerised. I immediately thought, ‘This is a picture that has to be made.’ And when I was asked to come aboard as a producer alongside Richard Attenborough and Anthony Haas, I didn’t hesitate for a moment.”

At the moment there’s no sign Scorsese will also direct, but it’s always a possibility, nor is there any indication when the movie might shoot.

First Anchorman 2 Pic Arrives – And Ron Burgundy takes to Twitter

May 15, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

With so many unfulfilled sequel promises in the years since Anchorman arrived in 2004, it appears the main order of business at the moment is convincing people a follow-up really is happening and it’s not just some cruel joke.

The next few days should remove any doubt, with a teaser for the film promised alongside The Dictator, and now Ron Burgundy himself has taken to Twitter and tweeted the first photo from the new movie.

He says: ‘Dont get Twirter. Anchorman2 teaser w Dictator tom night. Dont know what a teaser is. World is crazy? Having a scotch. http://pic.twitter.com/3Iw2Fa9T ‘

Ethan Hawke Seeks Predestination

May 15, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

While Ethan Hawke’s film output has ranged from the great to the abysmal, one of his stronger recent efforts was the futurisic vampire flick, Daybreakers. Now Variety reports that he’s reteaming with the directors of that movie, Michael and Peter Spierig, for the sci-fi movie, Predestination, based on Robert Heinlein’s 1958 short story, All You Zombies.

The Spierig’s say, “This is one of our favourite short stories. It’s truly original, and unlike anything you’ve ever read before. It’s the mother of all time paradox tales.” The plot follows a vaguely Minority Report style agency that travels through time to stop criminals committing murders and terrorists acts before they can go ahead with them. Hawke’s agent is sent on a series on intricate journeys in the hope he can continue his law enforcement career for eternity, with complicated results involving a particularly unexpected predestination paradox and a sex change operation!

The film will shoot in Australia at the beginning of next year.

Alan Rickman Set To Play CBGB Founder Hilly Kristal

May 15, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Despite having gone down in legend as the birthplace of American punk, the New York club CBGB shut its door in 2006. However its memory lives on and now director Randall Miller is busy putting together a biopic of the club’s founder, Hilly Kristal, with THR reporting that Alan Rickman is now set for the main role.

Miller had been busy putting together a movie about the Beach Boys’ Dennis Wilson, called The Drummer, with Aaron Eckhart set to star. However production on that has had to move to the autumn, so Miller is trying to slot in CBGB first.

Rickman will play Hilly Kristal, who in the late 1970s sought to create a venue for county, bluegrass and blues music (the CBGB of the name) in New York. However, after acts playing that music were tough to find, Kristal allowed local performers to play. That decision was precipitous, as the club soon became ground zero for rock & roll as well as punk, launching the careers of performers such as The Ramones, Blondie and Patti Smith.

it’s not the first time Rickman has worked with Miller, as they teamed up for Bottle Shock in 2008.

Harry Potter Screenwriter Steve Kloves May Be Defending Jacob

May 15, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

After spending a decade writing all but one of the scripts for the Harry Potter movies, Steve Kloves is keen to take on a directing project. He helmed The Fabulous Baker Boys and Flesh & Bone back in the late 80s and early 90s, and is now using his Hogwarts clout to get another directing gig. A couple of weeks ago he signed on to make a new version of The Jungle Book, and now Variety reports he’s set to write and direct the legal thriller, Defending Jacob.

Based on William Landay’s novel, which has been compared to Presumed Innocent and Ordinary People, the story is set in an upperclass Boston suburb, and follows a district attorney who takes time away from his job in order to defend his son, who’s been charged with murder. However, while he’s prepared to help his kid, he’s less than certain over just how innocent his son is. That could certainly make for a potentially interesting film.

Defending Jacoc is very different to Harry Potter, but with those films Kloves showed he was very good at suspense, something that will certainly be needed here.

Robert Downey Jr & Tom Cruise Eyed For El Presidente

May 15, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Austin Powers and Meet The Parents helmer Jay Roach is a man with a plan, as he’s currently putting together the action-comedy El Presidente, and wants Tom Cruise and Robert Downey Jr to play the leads, according to Vulture.

Cruise has already shown some interest as a couple of year ago he was attached to star in the movie, at which time Jack Nicholson was mooted to co-star. However we haven’t heard much about the film since, but now Cruise is still being name-dropped in connection to the movie, as is Robert Downey Jr. What isn’t clear it whether any offers have been made to the stars, or if it’s just hopeful speculation on the part of the director and producers.

The film ‘follows an overzealous Secret Service agent whose work-life boundary issues get him reassigned to the inglorious task of guarding America’s worst former president, who is a bumbling sleaze. The job suddenly becomes exciting when a threat is made on the ex-president’s life and they must go on the run.’ Downey Jr. would be the President and Cruise would be the Secret Service agent.

It’s still a long way off coming together yet, although at the moment Downey Jr. doesn’t have anything firmly booked in after Iron Man 3, and while Cruise has a couple of sci-fi films ready to shoot this year, he may be able to slot this in too. We’ll have to wait and see.
