Owen Wilson Goes Dramatic In The Coup

April 25, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

It’s been announced that Owen Wilson will star in The Coup, which John Erick Dowdle (Devil, Quarantine) will direct from a script he co-wrote with his brother Drew. Filming will begin in October in Southeast Asia.

The Coup is a thriller about an American family that moves to Southeast Asia and finds themselves embroiled in a violent coup where rebels mercilessly attack the city. It’s certainly something a little different for Owen, who rarely steps outside project with a comedic edge.

The movie is being backed by Crime Scene Pictures, the same company that recently announced they are remaking Suspiria, based on Dario Argento’s 1977 film of the same name, with David Gordon Green attached to direct. (Source: Deadline)

New G.I. Joe: Retaliation Trailer

April 24, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Oh dear. It doesn’t appear London is going to survive G.I. Joe: Retaliation, as this trailer suggests the entire thing is getting destroyed. Hopefully though the Joes will get us some revenge! In this sequel, the G.I. Joes are not only fighting their mortal enemy Cobra; they are forced to contend with threats from within the government that jeopardize their very existence. The President has disbanded the Joes, but they’re not giving up, as they’re not even sure the President really is the President. Bruce Willis and Dwayne Johnson join Channing Tatum in the film, which will be released August 3rd (it seems a bit mean releasing a movie that blows up London in the middle of the Olympics, but never mind).

Mansome Trailer – Morgan Spurlock takes on male grooming

April 24, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

It’s difficult not to feel Morgan Spurlock has been slightly coasting on the success of Super Size me for the past decade, with a series of increasingly unfocussed documentaries. However we’ll have to hope Mansome is a return to form. The film look at men’s identity in the 21st century. Models, actors, experts and comedians weigh in on what it is to be a man in a world where the definition of masculinity has become as diverse as a hipster’s facial hair in Williamsburg. The hilarious follicles of men’s idiosyncratic grooming habits are thoroughly combed over as men finally take a long hard look in the mirror. It should be out later this year.

Richard Jenkins & Cameron Bright On For One Square Mile

April 24, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Academy Award-nominated actor Richard Jenkins (The Visitor) and Cameron Bright (The Twilight Saga: Eclipse) have joined the cast of Charles-Olivier Michaud’s upcoming One Square Mile.

Written by scribes Josh Campbell and Jeff Van Wie, the film is a highly charged, emotional story of a disenfranchised teen (Bright) living on the wrong side of the tracks. Desperate for a way out, his life collides with an old reclusive track coach (Jenkins), angry at the world with no purpose in life. The two form a reluctant bond that forces them to face their circumstances as they race to save each other and ultimately – themselves.

This will be director Charles-Olivier Michaud’s first English-language film since his Snow & Ashes won the Grand Jury Sparky Award for Best Narrative Film at Slamdance in 2010. Michaud, who is from Quebec, has recently helmed the French-language romance, Sur Le Rythme. Principal photography is scheduled to begin in August. (Source: THR)

Mel Gibson May Join Machete Kills

April 24, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Isn’t it about time Mel Gibson just admitted defeat and went off to live in a hole somewhere? However it doesn’t seem to matter what fresh nuttiness is revealed about him, he keeps getting shots at public rehabilitation (which he largely squanders). Now he’s in talks for a role in Machete Kills, which would give him the sort of action part he’d be incapable of securing in a studio movie at the moment.

It’s not certain he’ll be in the movie, but Robert Rodriguez has apparently reached out to Gibson, according to Deadline, and wants him for the sequel. It was known a while back that Rodriguez had Mel on his wishlist and that’s now turned into official talks.

The new film finds Machete (Danny Trejo) recruited by the U.S. Government for a mission which would be impossible for any mortal man. Machete must battle his way through Mexico to take down a madman cartel leader and an eccentric billionaire arms dealer who has hatched a plan to spread war across the planet with a weapon in space. Machete takes on an army in an effort to dismantle a plan for global anarchy.

Rodriguez plans to make the movie in the next few months before going off to shoot Sin City: A Dame To Kill For. It’d make sense for Mel to take the role, as he’s desperately in need of some good PR.

Jessica Chastain Going Sexy Scientist In Iron Man 3

April 24, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Jessica Chastain seems too good an actress to be taking small parts in superhero movies, but then, if someone phones you up and says ‘Do you wanna be in an Iron Man movie?’, you’re hardly going to say ‘no’! The Oscar nominated actress is now in talks for Iron Man 3, according to Deadline.

It’s not clear exactly how she’ll fit into the plot – or even if she’s on the side of the good guys or not – but she’ll play ‘a sexy scientist every bit as smart as Tony Stark’. Let’s just hope the smarts are what they’ve got Chastain on board for, and not just to parade her around in sexy outfits.

Chastain was apparently offered the role a while ago, but at the time it appeared scheduling issues meant she couldn’t accept, at which point Diane Kruger, Gemma Arterton and Isla Fisher were considered. However the timing problems have now been sorted out and so Chastain is back in talks.

Franchise stars Robert Downey, Jr., Gwyneth Paltrow, Don Cheadle and Scarlett Johansson, will be joined by newcomers Ben Kingsley and Guy Pearce in the film, which will start shooting next month.

Haywire’s Gina Carano Eyes Fast And The Furious 6

April 24, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

It seems Haywire was only the beginning of Gina Carano’s acting career, as the former fighter is now in negotiations to star in The Fast and the Furious 6 for Universal Pictures and director Justin Lin.

Stars Vin Diesel and Paul Walker are returning for the new movie, along with Dwayne Johnson, who portrayed Diplomatic Security Service agent Luke Hobbs in Fast Five. THR says Carano will play a member of Hobbs’ team, although it hasn’t been revealed exactly how she’ll fit into the plot.

Justin Lin will direct from a screenplay by Chris Morgan. No plot details have been released, but the sequel is said to revolve around another heist. Universal Pictures has already set a May 24, 2013 release date for the sixth installment in the franchise, although it isn’t known exactly when it’ll shoot, or indeed if rumours are true that a seventh movie will be shot back-to-back with it.

Melissa Leo & Til Schweiger Join Charlie Countryman

April 24, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

After several years of development difficulties, The Necessary Death of Charlie Countryman is finally moving forward with Shia Labeouf in the lead role and Fredrik Bond directing. Now Variety reports that Melissa Leo and Til Schweiger have joined the cast.

Shia LaBeouf stars as the title character, who falls for a young woman (Evan Rachel Wood) under the control of a violent mob boss (Mads Mikkelsen). Melissa Leo will play Charlie’s late mother, whose spirit guides him through this ordeal. Til Schweiger is portraying Darko, a Serbian mobster who is sent to America to avoid a war crimes tribunal.

Fredrik Bond is directing from a screenplay by Matt Drake (Project X), with production scheduled to begin next month in Eastern Europe.

Sean Penn Circles Secret Life of Walter Mitty

April 24, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Normally the closest Sean Penn gets to mainstream popcorn cinema is an earnest drama or indie project, but now he might make a proper populist movie, as Deadline reports he’s in talks to appear in 20th Century Fox’s remake of The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, which Ben Stiller will direct and take the lead role in.

The movie is about the Walter Mitty, a mild-mannered photo manager who sets off on a quest to find a missing negative, and who discovers that his dreams of adventure don’t quite match the reality. Sean Penn will play a photographer, in what has been described as a small but crucial role. Kristen Wiig, Patton Oswalt, Adam Scott, and Shirley MacLaine are also attached to star.

Production is already underway, although it isn’t clear when Fox plans to release the movie.
