Idris Elba Takes On The Dark Tower In A Selection Of New Pics

July 17, 2016 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

dark-tower-pic2-slideThe adaptation of Stephen King’s The Dark Tower has had a difficult journey to the screen. It’s been talked about for decades, and while this got serious in the last few years with the likes of Javier Bardem attached to the project, it’s stalled numerous times, not least Universal getting cold feet about committing to three films and two connecting TV series.

However, now Sony Picture has taken over, Ron Howard is behind the camera, and Idris Elba is starring as gunslinger Roland Deschain. The character is busying tracking the evil Man In Black (Matthew McConaughey) across various dimension, to try and stop him destroying The Dark Tower, which is where all universes meet.

One of the more interesting things about Dark Tower is the fact that while it’s a fantasy/western series, it connects to many other King novels via characters and places. It appears that will remain to a certain extent, with the movie using a child called Jake, who has a power called ‘The Shine’, which of course refers to Danny’s power in The Shining (although they can’t call the power The Shining, as Warner Bros. owns the rights to that).

A selection of new images from the movie have now arrived, which you can take a look at below. The film is due out next February. [Read more…]

Take A Look At The New Power Rangers With A Character Poster Set

July 17, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

power-rangers-character-poster2-slideWhen it was announced they were planning to make a new Power Rangers movie, a lot of people rolled their eyes. However that’s been turning around, with things such as the news Elizabeth Banks and Bryan Cranston would appear, that it was getting a bigger budget and certainly wouldn’t be as cheesy as the TV show.

Now we can get a look at the new Rangers, with a set of character posters that you can take a look at below. The rangers themselves are made up from singer Becky G as Yellow Ranger Trini, Ludi Lin as Black Ranger Zack, Dacre Montgomery as Red Ranger Jason, Naomi Scott as Pink Ranger Kimberly, and RJ Cyler as Blue Ranger Billy.

The movie is due in cinemas early next year. Click on the images below for larger versions. [Read more…]

New Look At Charlie Hunnam & Jude Law In King Arthur: Legend Of The Sword

July 17, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

king-arthur-1When it was first announced, Guy Ritchie’s King Arthur was supposed to be the start of a massive interconnected franchise based around the Knights Of The Round Table. However, it looks like they’re hedging their after moving it all around the release schedule and then changing the name to King Arthur: Legend Of The Sword.

That doesn’t mean it’ll be a disaster but does suggest they perhaps don’t have as much faith in it as they once did – especially as we’ve heard fairly little about it in the last year. However, now a couple of new images have been released via EW.

They show a bruised and battered looking Arthur (Charlie Hunnam), who tells EW of his character, ‘He’s a bit rough around the edges, but he’s basically a survivor. There’s definitely a harder edge than people would imagine.’

There’s also a show of Jude Law as the villainous Vortigern, which you can see below. The movie is currently due out next March.

The Hollars Trailer – John Krasinski has more problems than just a pregnant Anna Kendrick

July 17, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

the-hollars-slideSynopsis: ‘John Krasinski’s big-hearted family comedy takes a touching look at the ties that bind. Krasinski plays John Hollar, a frustrated graphic novelist anxiously awaiting the birth of his baby with girlfriend, Rebecca (Anna Kendrick). When his mother, Sally (Margo Martindale), is diagnosed with a brain tumor, John flies back home, where denial runs deep in the family tree. While his loving but fractured family pulls together to prepare Sally for surgery, John takes a second look at the life he left behind.’

The movie is Krasinksi’s sophomore directorial effort following his 2009 adaptation of David Foster Wallace‘s Brief Interviews with Hideous Men. He also co-wrote The Promised Land, although Gus Van Sant directed that one.

The film will be in US cinemas on August 26th. Take a look at the trailer below. [Read more…]

First Look At Bill Skarsgard’s Pennywise The Clown In Stephen King’s It Movie

July 13, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

it-first-look-pennywise-slideAfter several years in pre-production, director and cast changes and plenty of time when it looked like it would never happen, a new film based on Stephen King’s It has started shooting. Actually it’s two movies, with the first dealing with a group of children’s interaction with a sewer-dwelling monster that takes the form of an evil clown, and the second with what happens once they’ve grown up and return to take on the menace again.

One of the main things people have been interested is what the clown – Pennywise – would look like. We’ve known for a while that they were making him rather younger than Tim Curry’s take in the 1980s two-part TV movie, as the first person cast was Will Poulter. He’s since been replaced by Bill Skarkgard, and EW have released our first glimpse of him in full makeup for the role.

You can take a look at the image below. It’s certainly quite menacing. [Read more…]

La La Land Teaser Trailer – Emma Stone & Ryan Gosling fall in love in the new musical

July 13, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

la-la-land-slideLa La Land is certainly one of the years more intriguing movies – an original musical starring Emma Stone & Ryan Gosling, from the director of Whiplash. It’s been a bit of a secretive one, but now we get our first proper look with a teaser trailer, which is enigmatic but looks pretty interesting.

The brief synopsis states: ‘Written and directed by Academy Award® nominee Damien Chazelle, LA LA LAND tells the story of Mia [Emma Stone], an aspiring actress, and Sebastian [Ryan Gosling], a dedicated jazz musician, who are struggling to make ends meet in a city known for crushing hopes and breaking hearts. Set in modern day Los Angeles, this original musical about everyday life explores the joy and pain of pursuing your dreams.’

The trailer shows this will be a mix of realism and fantasy. John Legend, Rosemarie DeWitt, Finn Wittrock, Callie Hernandez, Sonoya Mizuno, Jessica Rothe, Tom Everett Scott and Josh Pence also star. It’ll be out later this year. [Read more…]

Loving Trailer – Joel Edgerton & Ruth Negga play a mixed race couple fighting for the right to marry

July 13, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

loving-slideWhile recent years have seen fights over whether same sex couple should have the right to marry, it’s easy to forget that it’s not too long ago that in parts of the US, people of different races were barred from marriage. Loving takes a look at a relationship that sparked a vital court case.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘“Loving” celebrates the real-life courage and commitment of an interracial couple, Richard and Mildred Loving, who married and then spent the next nine years fighting for the right to live as a family in their hometown. Their civil rights case, Loving v. Virginia, went all the way to the Supreme Court, which in 1967 reaffirmed the very foundation of the right to marry – making their love story an inspiration to couples everywhere.’

The movie should be out later this year. Take a look at the trailer below. [Read more…]

Javier Bardem Will Take On Frankenstein In Universal’s Movie Monster Universe

July 11, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

javier-bardemUniversal’s hopes of building an Avengers style universe around classic monsters is moving apace, with a reboot of The Mummy currently shooting with Tom Cruise, Johnny Depp signed up to be the Invisible Man and Russell Crowe on board to be Dr. Jeykll/Mr. Hyde. Now the films have found their Frankenstein, as Variety report Javier Bardem is in talks for the role.

The monster universe will be set in the modern day, with Universal planning a new take on the classic Bride Of Frankenstein. However, it appears likely that Bardem will appear as the character in another movie first, but it’s not known which one. He may have been cast now so he can cameo in The Mummy, but it’s believed Invisible Man will also shoot this year.

The studio is certainly bringing a lot of star power to its planned franchise, going against the grain for superhero movies, which have tended to cast cheaper up-and-comers, or well-known names going cheap (and remember, that’s exactly what Robert Downey Jr. was before Iron Man). It’s presumably due to the fact movie monster don’t have the same sort of in-built fanbase and interest that superheroes tend to have, and so they feel adding some big names will help. It’s yet to be seen whether it will work out.

John Cho’s Sulu Will Be Star Trek’s First Major Gay Character In New Movie

July 7, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

star-trek-beyond-john-cho-hikaru-suluBack in 2014, there was a bit of a furore over the fact that, despite being held up since its 1968 inception as a beacon of progressive values on things like race, Star Trek had never had an on-screen openly LGBT character (although some had appeared in books). At the time, then director of the third rebooted Star Trek movie, Roberto Orci, said he was open to the idea of being more inclusive in the film, but after that we heard nothing.

Well, the director may have changed since them (to Justin Lin), but the film is indeed getting a gay character, and it’s one of the main crew members – John Cho’s Mr. Sulu. The actor revealed the news in a chat to Australia’s Herald Sun, telling them that it’s revealed in the movie that the Helmsman of the USS Enterprise, Hikaru Sulu, has a husband back home on earth, as well as a daughter they raise together.

Cho added, “I liked the approach, which was not to make a big thing out it, which is where I hope we are going as a species, to not politicise one’s personal orientations.”

Choosing Sulu to have a hubby is, of course, a nod to George Takei, who played the role in the original series and movies, and then came out as gay in 2005. He’s since become a one of the most high profile voices for LGBT rights. It’s certainly taken Star Trek a long time to have a gay character, but it’s finally happened and the nod to Takei is a nice touch too.

Goat Trailer – James Franco and Nick Jonas go frat house hazing

July 7, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

goat-slideNormally movies like to view fraternities as either places of ribald fun, or else elitist organisation that look down on the plucky underdog. However, Goat plans to take a more dramatic view of them, peering into the sometimes dangerous world of hazing pledges.

While most universities have banned hazing (or at least anything that could be considered humiliating), some frats still see it as a rite of passage. Goat stars Ben Schnetzer as a young man who decides to pledge the frat that his older brother (Nick Jonas) belongs to. However, it’s not long before he discovers he’s entered a world of aggression, power play and abuse.

James Franco also cameos as an alum who likes to try to relive his college days. Based of Brad Land’s memoir of his own frat days, it’ll be open in cinemas in NY, LA & Select US Cities and on VOD on Sept 23. [Read more…]
