Gold Red Band Trailer – Matthew McConaughey searches for riches in the Indonesian jungle

January 11, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Matthew McConaughey has certainly come a long way from being the king of awful rom-coms. Indeed, he hasn’t made one for years. Next up he’s got Gold, which was originally being lined up as an awards contender, but following middling reviews it doesn’t look like it’s going to be winning much.

While it got a small Oscar-qualifying release in the US at Christmas, it won’t reach most cinemas over there until the end of the month, while it’ll arrive in the UK on February 3rd.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘GOLD is the epic tale of one man’s pursuit of the American dream, to discover gold. Starring Oscar winner Matthew McConaughey as Kenny Wells, a prospector desperate for a lucky break, he teams up with a similarly eager geologist and sets off on an amazing journey to find gold in the uncharted jungle of Indonesia. Getting the gold was hard, but keeping it would be even harder, sparking an adventure through the most powerful boardrooms of Wall Street. The film is inspired by a true story.’

Baywatch Red Band Trailer – Zac Efron & The Rock offer up more shirtlessness (& F-bombs)

January 11, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Just take a look at the picture above, and tell me it hasn’t reached the point where it looks like Zac Efron’s head has been transplanted onto someone else’s body. This is admittedly from a particularly pumped up shot from the new Baywatch red-band trailer, but even in his other shirtless shots, he does look like he should be told that having more than 2% body fat is not a crime. But hey, perhaps he felt hulking it up wa necessary if he was going to be shirtless next to the bulk of Dwayne Johnson.

Either way, the sight of both of them with their shirts off is quite impressive.

The film is, of course, based on the hit 90s TV series. As you might expect being taken from show that’s known for being pretty cheesy, the film keeps it’s tongue firmly in its cheek. And yes, there is some slo-mo running in swimsuits.

Take a look at the new International Red Band trailer below. Baywatch will be in cinemas next summer.

Dustin Lance Black Thinks Donald Trump ‘Might Like’ His Gay Rights Series, When We Rise, If He Watches It

January 10, 2017 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

It’s not too long now until the Dustin Lance Black written eight-part gay rights mini-series, When We Rise, starts airing on ABC in the US. He’s been at the Television Critics Association Winter press tour to talk about the show, how he believes it’s under attack by the alt-right, how he things Donald Trump might actually like the series, and how he hopes non-liberals will watch it.

He says, “This show is under attack from the alt-right online. But this show is not a war. Every single person in this world is a minority, depending on how you slice the pie, and this show is about how we are connected.”

Black became aware of the alt-right’s efforts when he saw the Youtube comments under the Before We Rise trailer, which quickly became clogged with negative, homophobic, racist and rabidly unpleasant comments (something we pointed out at the time). Variety reports that Black said he also ‘found a YouTube video that breaks down the trailer with a psycho-analysis of Black’s relationship with his own father. As hurtful as it was to watch, Black said he found parts of it amusing. “I thought, ‘This guy is actually funny.’ If he and I met in a bar we’d probably actually get along.”‘

He even hopes there’s room for Trump supporters amongst the viewers, saying, “I think there’s a lot of people who voted for Donald Trump who will love this show. I don’t see this show as only trying to speak to half a country. I think if Donald Trump watches the show he might like the show. We can speak the same language.”

He adds, “As a student of history, we know history is not a straight line; it’s a pendulum,” with the hope that When We Rise can be a call to action for those who hope to ensure the pendulum doesn’t swing too far to the right.

Black also knows the series won’t just be criticised by the right, adding, “You’re going to face backlash from within the community as well as outside, and you have to survive that as well. Whenever you’re depicting a social justice movement, first, you’re allowed to be a supporting character as long as you’re funny. Then you can be dramatic, as long as you die at the end of the movie. But you can live a life of purpose and survive and thrive.”

The show chronicles the personal and political struggles, setbacks and triumphs of a diverse family of LGBT men and women who helped pioneer one of the last legs of the US Civil Rights movement from its turbulent infancy in the 20th century to the successes of today. The period piece tells the history of the gay rights movement, starting with the Stonewall Riots in 1969.

The cast includes Guy Pearce, Mary-Louise Parker, Rachel Griffiths, Whoopi Goldberg, Rosie O’Donnell, Denis O’Hare, David Hyde Pierce, Michael K. Williams, Charlie Caver and Ivory Aquino. The show will start airing in the US at the end of February.

Logan Miller Joins Greg Berlanti’s Gay-Themed Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda

January 10, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Greg Berlanti’s planned gay-themed young adult movie, Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens, continues to come together. The film already has Jurassic World’s Nick Robinson attached to star, and now he has company, with THR reporting that Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse’s Logan Miller has joined the film.

Based on Becky Albertalli’s novel, the film will follow, ‘a gay teen named Simon who has not come out to his classmates. But when an email he sent to a boy (that he’s never met) falls into the hands of class clown Martin, Simon finds himself in a complicated situation when he’s blackmailed into helping Martin get to know his best friend Abby, the new girl in school.’

Robinson will play Simon, while Miller will be his blackmailer, Martin.

Isaac Aptaker and Elizabeth Berger wrote the script for the movie, although it’s not clear when it might shoot. The likelihood is that with Berlanti still busy on his DC TV series, it will begin lensing once the latest seasons of Arrow, Flash, Legends Of Tomorrow and Supergirl have wrapped in the Spring.

Growing Up Coy Trailer – A Colorado family fight for their transgender child’s rights

January 10, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Synopsis: ‘The Rocky Mountains loom over rural Fountain, Colorado, a farm town on the outskirts of the conservative Colorado Springs area. In a small duplex home, Kathryn, 27, a portrait photographer and Jeremy, 31, a former marine and full time student, give the “5 minute warning” for bedtime to their 5 kids: 8 Year-old Dakota, 6-year-old triplets – Coy, Max, and Lily, as well as little Auri, who is 3. The kids scream “Nooo!” – a familiar scene in millions of households across America.

‘That night, Kathryn decides to read Coy’s favorite book, “Be Who You Are”– which shows the challenges of a gender variant child “Nick” as he transforms into “Hope”. It is Coy’s favorite book because Coy was born a boy biologically, but since she was 18 months old she has identified as a girl.

‘Kathryn laments, “At first, we thought it was a phase that he liked the color pink and wearing girly clothes. But one day, shortly before Coy began kindergarten, Coy asked ‘When are the doctors going to take my penis off?’ – and then I knew this was something serious.”

‘After consulting with a therapist and a little soul searching, Coy’s parents allowed Coy to publicly transition from male to female in Kindergarten with the support of her teachers and classmates. She also used the girls’ bathroom without incident until the school administration abruptly reversed their decision in the middle of her 1st grade year, letting Kathryn and Jeremy know that going forward, Coy must use the boys bathroom or school nurse’s bathroom.

‘Devastated that their daughter would be singled out and humiliated, the Mathises decide to fight back and retain attorney Michael Silverman to file a complaint on their behalf with the Colorado Civil Rights Division, pursuing a case that would set a precedent for school districts across the state and the nation.

‘After a press conference on the steps of the Colorado State Capitol, suddenly the Mathis family is at the center of an international media circus, with their child on the front page of the New York Times – and the target of extreme scrutiny from critics around the world.

‘What comes next is a tumultuous year full of ups and downs as the Mathises fight a very public battle that never lets up, ultimately threatening the very fabric of their family. Coy’s parents become outspoken public defenders of their daughter’s rights, and we see Coy make the transition from an innocent 6-year-old-girl to the proverbial “poster child” for the trans youth movement.’

Growing Up Coy is available now on Netflix and iTunes. [Read more…]

New Cars 3 Sneak Peek – Lightning McQueen revs up for another Pixar adventure

January 10, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

The first teaser for Cars 3, which arrived back in November, didn’t show us much about the movie, other than the fact Lightning McQueen was going to be having some major trouble on the track. Now a new sneak peek has arrived which starts with the same footage before showing us a little more of the movie.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Blindsided by a new generation of blazing-fast racers, the legendary Lightning McQueen (voice of Owen Wilson) is suddenly pushed out of the sport he loves. To get back in the game, he will need the help of an eager young race technician, Cruz Ramirez, with her own plan to win, plus inspiration from the late Fabulous Hudson Hornet and a few unexpected turns. Proving that #95 isn’t through yet will test the heart of a champion on Piston Cup Racing’s biggest stage!

‘Directed by Brian Fee (storyboard artist “Cars,” “Cars 2“) and produced by Kevin Reher (“A Bug’s Life,” “La Luna” short), “Cars 3” cruises into cinemas on 14th July, 2017.’ [Read more…]

Gay-Themed Moonlight & The Pass Pick Up BAFTA Nominations

January 10, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

A day after picking up a record seven Golden Globes, La La Land solidified its status as the Oscar frontrunner by picking up 11 nominations for this year’s BAFTA Awards. That included a Best Picture nomination, along with nods for Ryan Gosling, Emma Stone and director Damien Chazelle.

The next highest number of nominations were Arrival and Nocturnal Animals, which scored nine each. However there was a bit of a surprise that Martin Scorsese’s Silence was shut out entirely.

On the gay-themed front, Moonlight scored four nominations, including Best Film, Best Original Screenplay, Mahershala Ali for Best Supporting Actor, and Naomie Harris for Best Supporting Actress. It was fewer noms than some had expected for the release – especially as Barry Jenkins didn’t get a Best Director nod – although it may have been hampered by the fact that it’s not due for release in the UK until mid-February – a good time to make the most of Oscar buzz, but a little late for the more British-based BAFTA voting cohort.

Elsewhere, the excellent gay-themed The Pass, starring Russell Tovey as a closeted soccer play, scored an Outstanding Debut nomination for John Donnelly (Writer) and Ben A. Williams (Director).

Take a look at all the BAFTA nominations below. [Read more…]

Moonlight Takes Best Drama Golden Globe, While La La Land Sets A Record

January 9, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

The members of The Hollywood Foreign Press Association sure like La La Land, with the movie taking a record seven Golden Globes, more than any other single movie has ever taken. It did so well that the only categories it was eligible for that it didn’t pick up, were the the Supporting Actress and Actor categories – and seeing as the movie is so strongly built around Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone, that’s not too much of a surprise.

However, it wasn’t just La La Land at the Globes, as gay-themed drama Moonlight also had some extremely good news, as it took the Best Picture – Drama gong. It means that while La La Land is now the frontrunner for the Best Picture Oscar, Moonlight could cause an upset, having not just taken the Best Drama Globe, but also having won numerous critics association awards. It’s certainly an impressive achievement for a low budget movie that many had thought would go the route of Tangerine – scoring enthusiastic reviews and a lot of love, but getting overlooked by major awards bodies.

The Golden Globe awards were also marked by a lot of concern about the rise of Donald Trump, with Best Supporting Actor in a Series, Limited Series or TV Movie winner Hugh Laurie quipping, “Thank you, first of all, to the Hollywood Foreign Press Association for this amazing honour. I suppose it’s made more amazing by the fact that I’ll be able to say that I won this at the last ever Golden Globes. I don’t mean to be gloomy. It’s just that it has the words ‘Hollywood,’ ‘foreign,’ and ‘press’ in the title.”

Meryl Streep also gave a pretty epic speech decrying Trump and calling on the arts and the press to hold power to account. You can take a look at it below.

One other thing many couldn’t help noticing was a same sex smooch at the ceremony! After Ryan Gosling beat Ryan Reynolds to the Best Actor – Musical or Comedy gong, Andrew Garfield was spotted planting a big smooch on Reynolds’ lips as Gosling went up for his award. You can take a look at that below too, along with the full list of winners. [Read more…]

Gay-Themed Armie Hammer Movie Call Me By Your Name Gets Distribution Deal

January 8, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Normally movies premiering at the Sundance Film Festival have to wait until the fest actually kicks off before they can talk about getting distribution deals. It’s exceedingly encouraging for Call Me By Your Name then that a few weeks before Sundance starts, it’s already been been picked up by Sony Pictures Classics, which has bought the worldwide rights, according to THR.

The movie ‘based on Andre Aciman’s novel of the same name and stars Armie Hammer as a 24-year old American scholar spending the summer of 1983 in Northern Italy, where he attracts the attention of a 17-year-old Jewish-American boy, played by Timothee Chalamet. Michael Stuhlbarg rounds out the cast as the boy’s father.’

The plot sounds as if it has echoes of Death In Venice. Luca Guadagnino (I Am Love, A Bigger Splash) directs the movie, which debuts at Sundance’s Premieres section on January 22nd. As Sony Pictures Classics has picked it up early, don’t be surprised if they’re looking at it as an Oscar contender for next year, so it may not get a release until the end of 2017.

First Look At Paul Rudd & Alexander Skarsgard In Duncan Jones’ Mute

January 8, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Before he went off to make the mega-budget Warcraft: The Beginning, Source Code and Moon director Duncan Jones was working on Mute. Now he’s gone back to that film, which will be eschewing largely cinemas, due to a very lucrative deal with Netflix.

Now the first pictures from the film have arrived.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Set in the near-future, Leo (Alexander Skarsgård) is a bartender living in the pulsing city of Berlin. Because of a childhood accident, Leo lost the ability to speak and the only good thing in his life is his beautiful girlfriend Naadirah (Seyneb Saleh). When she vanishes without a trace, Leo’s search for her takes him deep into the city’s seedy underbelly. A pair of wisecracking American surgeons (Paul Rudd and Justin Theroux) are the only recurring clue and Leo is forced to take on this teeming underworld in order to find his love.

‘The Netflix original film is directed by Duncan Jones and written by Jones and Michael Robert Johnson. Stuart Fenegan serves as producer and Charles J.D. Schissel and Trevor Beattie serve as executive producers. The film will launch in all territories where Netflix is available in 2017.’

No exact release date has been revealed, but it’ll be out later this year. [Read more…]
