Tom Hardy Set To Be Al Capone In A New Biopic

October 30, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Tom-HardyIt looks like Tom Hardy is hoping to get his gangster on once more, as Variety reports that he’s set to play Al Capone in the movie Fonzo. Chronicle helmer Josh Trank, who some thought might have difficulty getting another job after the failure of Fantastic Four, is set to direct from his own script.

Capone was a ‘bootlegger and brutal gangster who ruled Chicago during Prohibition. The federal government successfully prosecuted him for tax evasion in 1931 and he was convicted and sentenced to 11 years in prison. He was released after eight years and died at the age of 48 in 1947 as dementia rotted his brain and harrowing memories of his violent and brutal origins melt into his waking life.’ The movie will follow him at the end of his life, when he’s 47.

The movie will be looking for buyers at the American Film Market next week. It’s not known when the film might shoot.

Tom Cruise Will Be Methuselah & Live Almost A 1,000 Years

October 30, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

tom-cruiseIn the last few years, Hollywood has had a growing interest in biblical movies, despite a very mixed record at the box office. That continues with the news, via Deadline, that Tom Cruise is attached to play Old Testament patriarch Methuselah in an upcoming movie.

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales co-director Joachim Rønning is set to helm the film, with Harry Potter producer David Heyman helping to oversee the project.

Methuselah is best known for being the oldest person in the Bible, which says he lived 969 years. The film will apparently cover the man’s entire life, which apparently helped him gain a “set of unparalleled survival skills.” Methuselah is actually only mentioned once in the Bible, which gives us his very long lifespan, and the fact that he’s Noah grandfather.

Outside the Bible, Methuselah is said have found out about the Great Flood from Enoch, and then helped his grandson build the Ark and warn people of the coming catastrophe. It’s also said that he had a great sword that conquered evils and ghosts. At the moment it’s not known which of these elements the movie will incorporate.

A Will & Grace Revival Is In The Works, But Will It Actually Happen?

October 27, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

will-and-grace-2016When the first new episode of Will & Grace arrived in September, made to tie in to the US general election and suggest perhaps voting Trump isn’t a good idea, all four cast members seemed open to at least thinking about being involved in a revival. Well, their comments and the success of the mini-episode on Youtube must have gotten the bigwigs at NBC thinking, as THR reports the network is in talks for a revival.

It’s too early to get excited yet, as it’s very early days, as no deals exist with any of the four main cast members or producers/creators David Kohan and Max Mutchnick (all of whom would need to agree to it). And while NBC are interested, if there is a reboot, it could end up elsewhere, with streaming services potentially stepping up with a more lucrative deal. If it does happen – whether on NBC or elsewhere – it’s likely to be for a limited eight or 10 episode run.

Indeed, during interviews while making the new episode, Debra Messing suggested streaming may be the way to go, saying, “Now there are platforms where you can do six or 10 episodes. I don’t believe we would ever come back to network [TV] again. I think that the logistics of all of our lives, there would just be way too many things to hammer out. But for something shorter-lived and maybe having the limitations of being on network TV lifted may give us a fun, fresh opportunity because we could be really, really naughty!”

Eric McCormack seemed more reticent, seemingly because he’s worried about trampling on the legacy of the original show, but even he said, “I’m sure we would all be open to talking about it.”

Sean Hayes and Mega Mullally also appeared open to at least considering it. However, that’s a long way from saying it’s going to happen, but we’re certainly a lot closer to a new season that most ever expected us to be.

Tom Hanks Wants To Be Channing Tatum’s Lover In The Remake Of Splash

October 27, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

tom-hanksI think it’s safe to say that he wasn’t being 100% serious, but Tom Hanks has said he’s very happy with the idea of remaking Splash, and if they do, he should appear in it and play Channing Tatum’s boyfriend. It was revealed back in August that Tatum is attached to a gender swapped remake of Splash, where he will be a merman, with his 22 Jump Street co-star Jillian Bell in the equivalent to Hanks’ human role in the 1984 original.

However, Hanks has a different idea, where he’ll steal Tatum from Bell.

Talking to AP at the US premiere of Inferno about whether he’d be willing to play Allen Bauer in the remake, he said, “No one asked me! I’m all in favor of it. Why not? That’s fine! I figure if they were really going to be bold, I would come back as Allen Bauer, and I would go off with Channing Tatum. That would be a bold movie, and I am suggesting it right now. Put THAT on your APwire.”

While I think it’s unlikely we’ll see Tatum and Hanks running off together, it certainly seems like he’d entertain the idea of making an appearance in the new version of Splash (and perhaps they can bring Darryl Hannah back). The movie may also retain the original director, Ron Howard (who also, of course, directed Hanks in Inferno), but he’s waiting to see the script and schedule before he decides.

New Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk Teaser Trailer – Ang Lee does a military tale his own way

October 27, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

billy-lynns-long-halftime-walk-joe-alswynThere was a lot of anticipation for Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk, partly because it’s Ang Lee’s first movie since the Oscar winning The Life Of Pi, and partly because he was planning something no one had done before – something made and projected in 3D at 120 frames per second (more than double The Hobbit’s 48fps). However, reviews from the New York Film Festival were middling, with some saying the high frame rate ruined the moviegoing experience.

The fact is though, the full 120fps will only be available in a handful of theatres (just two in the whole of the US), and the trailer does make it look very intriguing.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Three-time Academy Award® winner Ang Lee brings his extraordinary vision to Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk, based on the widely-acclaimed, bestselling novel. The film is told from the point of view of 19-year-old private Billy Lynn (newcomer Joe Alwyn) who, along with his fellow soldiers in Bravo Squad, becomes a hero after a harrowing Iraq battle and is brought home temporarily for a victory tour. Through flashbacks, culminating at the spectacular halftime show of the Thanksgiving Day football game, the film reveals what really happened to the squad – contrasting the realities of the war with America’s perceptions. The film also stars Kristen Stewart, Chris Tucker, Garrett Hedlund, with Vin Diesel, and Steve Martin. Lee used new technology, shooting at an ultra-high frame rate for the first time in film history, to create an immersive digital experience helping him dramatize war in a way never seen before.’

It’ll be out in cinemas towards the end of the year. It’s in US cinemas on November 11th and the UK on January 6th. [Read more…]

New Split Trailer – James McAvoy gets multiple personalities in M. Night Shyamalan’s latest

October 27, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

split-slideM. Night Shyamalan’s The Visit may not have been a great movie, but it was made on a low budget and made a decent profit. As a result Shyamalan has teamed up with producer Jason Blum again for his latest thriller, Split.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘While the mental divisions of those with dissociative identity disorder have long fascinated and eluded science, it is believed that some can also manifest unique physical attributes for each personality, a cognitive and physiological prism within a single being.

‘Though Kevin (James McAvoy) has evidenced 23 personalities to his trusted psychiatrist, Dr. Fletcher (Betty Buckley), there remains one still submerged who is set to materialize and dominate all the others. Compelled to abduct three teenage girls led by the willful, observant Casey (Anya Taylor-Joy, The Witch), Kevin reaches a war for survival among all of those contained within him—as well as everyone around him—as the walls between his compartments shatter apart.’

Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life Trailer – Lorelei, Rory & co. are back

October 25, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

gilmore-girls-a-year-in-the-lifeFor a while now Netflix has been bigging up the fact they’re bringing back Gilmore Girls for four new extended episodes. A few weeks ago they has announced that all four episodes will be available on the streaming service worldwide from November 25th, and now a full trailer for the revival has arrived.

It’ll be officially called Gilmore Girls: A Year In The Life, with the individual 90-minute instalments titled Winter, Spring, Summer and Fall.  If you need to catch up with the original seven seasons of the show, they are now available on Netflix.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Gilmore Girls makes its much-anticipated return with four memorable chapters from the lives of Lorelai, Emily, Rory and countless more Stars Hollow stalwarts. Picking up nine years after we last dropped in on the whimsical Connecticut town, Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life finds each of our leading ladies at a major crossroad: Lorelai’s relationship with Luke is at an unnerving standstill; Rory’s budding journalism career in New York has stalled before it’s even begun; and Emily’s world is turned upside down following the untimely passing of her beloved husband, Richard.

‘Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life is told through four 90-minute chapters — each spanning one season: Winter, Spring, Summer, Fall — and brings back to life everything from the quaint corner diner to the dreamy Dragonfly Inn to a fast-talking, quick-witted mother-daughter love story unlike any other.’

Jack O’Connell To Play Gay Fashion Designer Alexander McQueen In Andrew Haigh’s Biopic

October 25, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

jack-oconnell-shirtlessBack in January it was revealed that Weekend and Looking helmer Andrew Haigh was working on a biopic of legendary fashion designer Alexander McQueen. Now he’s found the man to play the central role, with THR reporting that Unbroken and Money Monster’s Jack O’Connell has signed on.

McQueen had a meteoric rise as a fashion designer, becoming renowned as one of the best in Britain by his early 20s, with his immaculate tailoring shocking, surprising and delighting fashion watchers in equal measure. He became one of the go-to designers for the hip and trendy, making outfits for David Bowie tours and working with Bjork (including directing the video for Alarm Call). He was appointed the head designer for Givenchy before launching his own successful label.

However, he also had issues with drug dependence and depression, and while he was openly gay (he said he knew he was gay when he was six and came out in his teens) he struggled to maintain relationships. He tragically committed suicide when he was just 40 years old, only days after his mother died of cancer.

The film will ‘explore the creative process of McQueen – who passed away in 2010 – in the months leading up to one of his greatest shows in 2009, providing an intimate portrait of the man behind the global brand.’

Chris Urch has written the script, based on Blood Beneath the Skin by Andrew Wilson. The current plan is to start shooting in January, with the hope it will be ready by the end of 2017 (and therefore a prime Oscar release slot).

Aardman Is Making A Sequel To Shaun The Sheep

October 25, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

shaun-the-sheep-2While Aardman Animation has had plenty of critical praise and armloads of Oscars (mainly for Best Animated Short), but it’s had less success with its feature-length project at the box office, to the point the Sony Pictures Animation parted ways with the company after lower than expected return.  However, they’ve since team up with Studiocanal and decided that following the success of 2015’s Shaun The Sheep Movie, they’re working on a sequel.

Richard Starzak will once more direct, which will take us back into the world of the very smart Shaun, who’s always one step ahead of the farmer, and the other sheep.

David Sproxton Co-founder and Executive Chairman at Aardman comments: “Shaun’s move to the big screen proved such a success with audiences around the world that he and the flock are very excited to be embarking on another big screen adventure. Aardman is partnering with STUDIOCANAL once again to produce another rip-roaring comedy, featuring Shaun and the rest of the gang in a story that takes them to even greater heights of lunacy.“

As well as the Shaun The Sheep sequel, Aardman is also working on Early Man, which Wallace & Gromit creator Nick Park is set to direct.

Gay-Themed Moonlight Scores Highest Per-Screen Average Of 2016

October 24, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

moonlight-slideWhile Moonlight has been getting exceptional reviews, it looks like a lot of people have been underestimating its box office potential – probably because they presumed its gay and African-American themes would limit its appeal (which is also probably why it wasn’t picked up by a major distributor). However, it’s surprised many by scoring an exceptional $103,675 per screen average on its first weekend of release in the US.

It was only playing on four screens (two in LA and two in New York), but even so it joins an elite list of only 25 other movies to average more than $100,000 per location in its first weekend. In comparison, Boo! A Madea Halloween, the weekend’s top movie, only took around $12,600 per theatre.

It certainly bodes well for the movie, which many have said ought to be a major awards contender, but many had written it off because they assumed it wouldn’t be seen widely enough, and also because its distributor, A24, doesn’t have the enormous budget needed for a massive Oscar campaign. However, if it can continue its success as a sleeper hit and get more people talking, it may well have a decent shot at some nominations.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘MOONLIGHT is the tender, heartbreaking story of a young man’s struggle to find himself, told across three defining chapters in his life as he experiences the ecstasy, pain, and beauty of falling in love, while grappling with his own sexuality. Anchored by astonishing performances and the singular vision of filmmaker Barry Jenkins, MOONLIGHT is a groundbreaking exploration of masculinity-a sensual, intoxicating piece of cinema that uncovers deep truths about the moments that define us, the people who shape us most, and the ache of love that can last a lifetime.’
