Russell Tovey Courts Controversy By Being Thankful He Didn’t Turn Out ‘Really Effeminate’

March 2, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

russell-toveySometimes actors say things in interviews they probably don’t think a lot about, but which turns out far more controversial than they expected. That seems to be true of Russell Tovey, who in trying to explain how he turned out the way he did, managed to piss off a lot of people who feel he was denigrating effeminate gay men.

Talking to The Guardian about his new TV series, Banished, he said, “I feel like I could have been really effeminate, if I hadn’t gone to the school I went to. Where I felt like I had to toughen up. If I’d have been able to relax, prance around, sing in the street, I might be a different person now. I thank my dad for that, for not allowing me to go down that path.”

I’d be willing to bet what he was trying to say is he’s grateful for who he is now and the career it’s allowed him to have, but thanking someone for ‘not allowing me to go down that path’ of being effeminate does sound pretty bad.

His comments were linked to his thoughts about how rare it is for an out gay man to be able to play gay and straight characters, saying, “Because it’s probably given me the unique quality that people think I have. I get told, a lot, that I’m kind of carving my own path. That there are not many actors who are out and are able to play straight, and gay, and everyone’s OK with it.”

So is Tovey expressing internalised homophobia, or did he just make his point really badly? You decide.

Drew Goddard To Direct Revamped Spider-man Standalone Movie

March 2, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

spider-manIt’s a few weeks since Marvel & Sony announced they were teaming up to bring Spider-man into the ever-expanding Marvel superhero universe. They revealed Spidey would show up in Captain America: Civil War, and would then go on to his own standalone movie, but it would be done in revamped form with a new actor in the webslinging role.

However what there was no mention of was whether Drew Goddard (The Cabin In The Woods, Cloverfield, World War Z) was suddenly out of the picture. He was set to direct Sony’s planned Sinister Six spin-off, which was put on indefinite hold by the Marvel news. However the studio must have liked what he was doing, as THR says he’s now in talks to write and direct to new Spider-man film.

There’s no news on the direction the film will take the character, but Sony has retained creative control over Spidey despite the Marvel tie-up. The movie is due in cinemas July 2017.

Jamie Dornian Will Turn Anthropoid With Cillian Murphy In A WWII Flick

March 2, 2015 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

fifty-shades-trailer2-jamie-dornan-shirtlessFollowing his star-making turn in Fifty Shades Of Grey, Jamie Dornan is heading to war for Anthopoid, Variety reports that he’ll co-star with Cillian Murphy in the movie, with Sean Ellis writing and directing.

The movie ‘is about an assassination attempt on Reinhard Heydrich, an SS general who led the Nazi forces in Czechoslovakia, and gained the nickname “The Butcher of Prague.” Two soldiers from Czechoslovakia’s army in exile are trained by British forces, and parachuted into their homeland with the assignment, code-named Anthropoid, to kill Heydrich.’

It’s not clear when the movie will shoot, but Dornan will fit it in inbetween sequels Fifty Shades sequels.

It is oddly interesting that Ellis has cast two Irishmen to play Czechs being trained by the Brits, but perhaps Ireland and Czechoslovakia are more similar than you might think.

First Look At Eddie Redmayne As Early Transsexual Lili Elbe In The Danish Girl

February 27, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Eddie-Redmayne-Danish-GirlEddie Redmayne has just picked up an Oscar and later this year he’s got a new movie that’s just the sort of thing that could land him another nomination, playing the central role in The Danish Girl.

Now the first image of Redmayne in the movie has appeared, showing us him as Lili Erbe, one of the first women to undergo sex-reassignment surgery way back in the early 1930s.

The film is based on David Ebershoff’s book about Danish painter Einar Wegener (Redmayne) and his wife Gerda. In 1931 Einar is thought to have become the first person in the world to have a sex-change operation, when she became Lili. It’s believed the journey started – at least openly – after Gerda asked Einar to stand in for a female subject that Gerda was supposed to paint. The painting became incredibly popular and Lili began to express who she truly was.

To add to the Oscar pedigree, Les Miserables and The King’s Speech helmer Tom Hooper is behind the camera.

Incidentally, it could have been a very different movie as back in 2009 Tomas Alfredson (Let the Right One in) was set to direct set to direct a film about Lili, with Nicole Kidman as the early transsexual, and Gwyneth Paltrow as her wife. That fell through though.

There has been some criticism that The Danish Girl has cast a cisgender man in the title role, however it was almost inevitable due to the need to have a well-known actor in the part, and also as it will cover Lili’s life both before and after transition. In an ideal world it would have been good to cast a transsexual actor, but unfortunately we’re not there yet.

Jack Huston In Talks To Be The New Crow

February 27, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

jack-hustonHave you been attached to play The Crow in the planned reboot of the franchise? Don’t worry, it’ll be your turn soon as they’re going to run out of actors if it keeps going like this.

The likes of Mark Wahlberg, Bradley Cooper, Luke Evans, James McAvoy and Tom Hiddleston and Channing Tatum are just a few of the actors who’ve been attached or rumoured for the movie in the past few years, and now we’ve got another to add to the list, as Deadline reports that Jack Huston is in talks for the film.

It appears they’re betting on Huston becoming a much bigger name in the next year or so, on the assumption that his major roles in Ben-Hur, The Longest Ride and Pride And Prejudice And Zombies turn him into a bona fide star.

There’s also been a bit of a revolving door of directors, but Corin Hardy is currently is the man behind the camera. Brandon Lee starred in director Alex Proyas’ 1994 original film The Crow, based on James O’Barr’s comic book series.

Denis Villeneuve To Direct Blade Runner Sequel, With Harrison Ford Confirmed To Star

February 27, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

blade-runnerFor quite a while now Ridley Scott has been developing a sequel to Blade Runner and Harrison Ford has indicated he’s potentially be interested in starring – if the script was good enough. It seems it must be, as Deadline reports that he’s now officially set to star.

While initially Ridley was thinking about directing himself, he’s since stepped aside and it looks like they’ve found his replacement. Denis Villeneuve, the man behind Prisoners and Incendies, is in talks to help the movie.

Andrew A. Kosove and Broderick Johnson from Alcon Entertainment, which owns the rights to Blade Runner, comment, “We are honored that Harrison is joining us on this journey with Denis Villeneuve, who is a singular talent, as we experienced personally on Prisoners. Hampton and Michael, with Ridley Scott, have crafted a uniquely potent and faithful sequel to one of the most universally celebrated films of all time, and we couldn’t be more thrilled with this amazing, creative team.”

Little is known about the plot, although it is known that it will feature Rick Deckard decades after the events of the first movie.

Lady In The Van Trailer – Bisexual writer Alan Bennett gets an unexpected driveway guest (in the form of Maggie Smith)

February 26, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

lady-in-the-van-pic1Alan Bennett has had huge success as a writer on projects as diverse as History Boys and The Madness Of King George. The soft-spoken Yorkshireman has become a beloved figure, but Lady In The Van takes a look at a lesser known chapter in his life.

However it’s one that seems fitting for Bennett, quietly eccentric, oddly British and rather sweet.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Lady in the Van tells the true story of the relationship between Alan Bennett and the singular Miss Shepherd, a woman of uncertain origins who ‘temporarily’ parked her van in Bennett’s London driveway and proceeded to live there for 15 years.’

Maggie Smith is the lady, with Alex Jennings as Bennett. Alan himself wrote the script, and the movie features many of those who’ve worked with him before, including History Boys James Corden and Dominic Cooper and Madness Of King George director Nicholas Hytner.

It’ll be interesting to see whether the script addresses Bennett’s sexuality, as for most of his life he’s been pretty quiet about it, although it’s known he’s had relationships with both men and women, and is currently in a civil partnership with a man. [Read more…]
