The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Trailer – Jennifer Lawrence reluctantly leads a rebellion

September 15, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

hunger-games-mockinjay-katniss-final-poster-slideAfter promising it a few days ago, the trailer for The Hunger Games: Mockingjay is here and there’s no doubt it’s looking pretty cool. It successfully broaches the fact that the third Hunger Games novel is rather different to the first two, by suggesting that this time around the whole of Panem is the arena.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘The worldwide phenomenon of The Hunger Games continues to set the world on fire with The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1, which finds Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence) in District 13 after she literally shatters the games forever. Under the leadership of President Coin (Julianne Moore) and the advice of her trusted friends, Katniss spreads her wings as she fights to save Peeta (Josh Hutcherson) and a nation moved by her courage. The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1 is directed by Francis Lawrence from a screenplay by Danny Strong and Peter Craig and produced by Nina Jacobson’s Color Force in tandem with producer Jon Kilik. The novel on which the film is based is the third in a trilogy written by Suzanne Collins that has over 65 million copies in print in the U.S. alone.’

The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 is due out in the UK on November 20th, 2014, with the final film (until an inevitable further sequel or spin-off is announced), The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2, out the same time the following year. [Read more…]

Cheyenne Jackson Gets Hitched To Boyfriend Jason Landau

September 15, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

cheyenne-jackson-jason-landau-weddingCheyenne Jackson was one of the first gay celebs to get married shortly after it was made legal in New York in 2011. Sadly two years later he became one of the first well-known figures to get a divorce from a same sex partner.

However now it’s time for wedding bells again as Jackson married new boyfriend Jason Landau over the weekend at a private ceremony in Encino, California.

Jackson announced the news himself, posting the pic above and the message ‘M A R R I E D. Life is Beautiful’.

Guests are reported to have included Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Jane Lynch and Alicia Silverstone, with the event said to have a woodsy theme to reflect Jackson’s Idaho upbringing.

Landau has said of the ceremony, “There were branches of trees hovering over the tennis court we’re on, with over 100 mini chandeliers draping the entire party. It was gorgeous.”

Jackson meanwhile told People magazine, “This means a new beginning for us. It was love at first sight and this is just the culmination of that.”

The Imitation Game Picks Up People’s Choice Award At Toronto International Film Festival

September 15, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

imitation-game-slideThe biopic of gay mathematician and codebreaker Alan Turing got a great boost to its Oscar chances over the weekend by picking up the Grolsch People’s Choice Award at the Toronto International Film Festival.

While the reviews from its first screenings were somewhat mixed, the prize will help keep the movie at the forefront of Oscar voters minds in the run-up to awards season. Even those reviews that had issues with the film have praised Benedict Cumberbatch’s performance as Turing, with many seeing him as a shoe-in for his first Academy Award nomination.

Turing was a pioneer of modern-day computing who is credited with helping crack the fiendish German codes, such as Enigma, during the Second World War. The film chronicles the nail-biting race against time by Turing and his brilliant team at Britain’s top-secret code-breaking centre, Bletchley Park. Turing, whose contributions and genius significantly shortened the war, saving thousands of lives, was the eventual victim of an unenlightened British Establishment.

Tragically in the 1950s Turing admitted to the police he was gay while reporting a robbery, believing they would protect him and catch those who’d stolen from him. Instead it was him who found himself in court. After he was convicted he was shunned by the establishment and despite his incredible mind he found himself pushed to the sidelines. He committed suicide (although some say it was an accident) not too long afterwards.

The film will be in cinemas in November.

Serena Trailer – Plus posters for the Jennifer Lawrence & Bradley Cooper reunion

September 13, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

serena-poster1Serena certainly looks like it’s going to be pretty, but perhaps surprisingly while it looks like Oscar fodder there’s no US release set yet. However other parts of the world are luckier, as it’s due for release in the UK on October 24th and comes to various other countries in the coming months too.

Now we get to take a look with the trailer and posters, which show off Jennifer Lawrence and Bradley Cooper’s giving a rather different period look to their American Hustle efforts, which you can see above and below.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘North Carolina mountains at the end of the 1920s – George and Serena Pemberton, love-struck newly-weds, begin to build a timber empire. Serena soon proves herself to be equal to any man: overseeing loggers, hunting rattle-snakes, even saving a man’s life in the wilderness. With power and influence now in their hands, the Pembertons refuse to let anyone stand in the way of their inflated love and ambitions. However, once Serena discovers George’s hidden past and faces an unchangeable fate of her own, the Pembertons’ passionate marriage begins to unravel leading toward a dramatic reckoning.’

Interestingly when it originally went development it was going to be rather different, as Darren Aronofsky was set to direct with Angelina Jolie starring. Now though it’s Lawrence, Cooper and Susanne Bier directing. [Read more…]

John Wick Trailer – Keanu Reeves is getting explosive

September 13, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

john-wick-posterKeanu Reeves could do with a hit as he hasn’t hit one out of the park commercially since The Matrix movies and has been involved in a few big budget catastrophes, including the disastrous 47 Ronin.

He’ll be hoping for better with the upcoming John Wick, and now we get our first taste of whether it will be a success with the trailer and the poster above.

It looks like it might be okay, although it is a rather generic tale, described as ‘a tale of adrenaline-fueled revenge and redemption. When a retired hit man is forced back into action by a sadistic young thug, he hunts down his adversaries with the skill and ruthlessness that made him an underworld legend.’

The poster is great though.

It’s out in the US October 24th but no UK date is currently set. [Read more…]

Playing It Cool Trailer – Chris Evans tries to conquer Michelle Monaghan’s heart

September 13, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

playing-it-cool-trailer-picPreviously called A Many Splintered Thing but now given the more mainstream friendly title Playing It Cool, sees Chris Evans stepping away from shields and S.H.I.E.L.Ds, and heading into quirkily romantic mode.

It’s not just him though as the film has a great cast including Michelle Monaghan, Aubrey Plaza, Topher Grace, Luke Wilson, Ioan Gruffudd, Giovanni Ribisi, Ashley Tisdale, Philip Baker Hall, Giovanni Ribisi and Martin Starr. There’s also Anthony Mackie, so at least he’s got a little bit of Captain America familiarity around him.

Chris Evans is set to star as a man who meets an engaged woman (Michelle Monaghan), just as he is becoming disillusioned with the prospect of love. He starts a platonic relationship with the woman, in hopes of trying to win her over, despite her relationship.

Justin Reardon directs but unfortunately it’s still not clear when we’ll see the film, even though it was shot back in 2012. [Read more…]

Blake Jenner, Tyler Hoechlin & Wyatt Russell Say That’s What I’m Talking About For Richard Linklater

September 13, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

tyler-hoechlinAfter the critical triumph of Boyhood, Richard Linklater is busy planning his next movie, That’s What I’m Talking About, a movie that’s said to be similar in tone to Linklater’s breakthrough stoner classic, Dazed And Confused.

Now he’s pulling the cast together as Deadline reports that Blake Jenner (Glee), Tyler Hoechlin (Teen Wolf), and Wyatt Russell (22 Jump Street) have all been cast as baseball players in the movie.

As with several of Linklater’s other films, it feels like he’s channelling memories of his own youth with the movie, as it’s ‘set in 1980, and a college freshman moves into the baseball house at his college and experiences a fraternity like lifestyle with his hard partying teammates.’

Dane DeHaan & Rooney Mara Will Get Musical In Ziggy

September 13, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Dane-DeHaanAt some point any actor who can hold a tune wants to show that off on-screen – hell, even Clint Eastwood made Paint Your Wagon – and now it’s Dane DeHaan and Rooney Mara’s turn, as they’ve signed on for the musical Ziggy, according to THR.

DeHaan will play the title character, ‘a hunchback escape artist who arrives in New York during the mass-culture boom of the late 1920s and falls in love with the fiancee (Mara) of a powerful media mogul.’

Diesel Schwarze, who got his start working with Baz Luhrmann, will write and direct, and will also help develop the music alongside DeHaan, Mara and Grammy-nominated songwriter Alex Da Kid. It sounds like it’ll be rather Luhrmann-esque, as THR’s report suggests the music will be contemporary despite the Jazz Age setting of the film.

Producer Lynette Powell comments, “Ziggy is one of the most unique scripts I’ve ever read. Diesel has written an incredibly beautiful and ambitious story, and his background working under Baz Luhrmann combined with his prolific commercial work, lends itself to bringing this story to life in a visually inspired and exciting way. We are so fortunate to have Dane and Rooney onboard to develop the music with us and create something truly original, contemporary and special.”

Jessica Chastain Circling Queer Filmmaker Xavier Dolan’s English Language Debut

September 12, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

jessica-chastainXavier Dolan has been making waves in the art movie world for the last few years, with many expecting him to becoming a major force in filmmaking ever since he won a prize at Cannes for his directorial debut, I Killed My Mother, which he helmed when he was only 18-years-old.

He’s made four more acclaimed films since then (Heartbeats, Laurence Anyways, Tom At The Farm and Mommy), all if which have concerned the LGBT experience in one way or another, but he’s stuck to his French-Canadian roots by avoiding the English language. That’s going to change though, as Bent reports he readying his first English-language effort and Jessica Chastain is circling to star.

She seems to be a bit of a fan of the filmmaker, as back in May after watching Dolan’s latest movie, Mommy, she tweeted, ‘Completely blown away by @XDolan. His film, MOMMY was so impressive’.

The new movie is called The Death and Life of John F. Donovan, which Dolan has described as “the story of an American movie star with everything working out for him who has a secretive correspondence with an 11 year old in London.”

Dolan tells Bent, “It was this friend of mine – a journalist – who had brought to my attention that Jessica Chastain had seen ‘Mommy’ in Cannes and had liked it and tweeted about it. I went back and scrolled down the tweets and there was this lovely tweet where Jessica was saying that she had liked ‘Mommy.'”

‘It dawned on me that I should ask Jessica about playing the ‘villain’ role in ‘John F. Donovan. There is this character of the editor-in-chief of a gossip magazine. The movie really is a satire of the business — more dramatic than humorous. And there’s this antagonistic figure that wants to ruin the lives of every star, especially that of the lead character. And I reached out to Jessica and she read the script. She loved it, and we got along like hotcakes. That’s basically it. I can already foresee all the pleasure we’ll have working together.”

Assuming it all works out with scheduling, Chastain will be on the set when shooting kicks off in Montreal, New York, Miami, England and Eastern Europe next year.

HBO Passes Over Ryan Murphy’s Lesbian-Themed Series, Open

September 12, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

ryan-murphyAfter the success of The Normal Heart, HBO revealed they were reteaming with Ryan Murphy (Glee, American Horror Story) to develop a TV series with a strong lesbian-theme component, Open, which is described as “a multicharacter exploration of the complex, ever-evolving landscape of sexuality, monogamy and intimacy in relationships”.

However after making a pilot starring Anna Torv (Fringe), Scott Speedman (Felicity), Michelle Monaghan (True Detective) and Wes Bentley (The Hunger Games), HBO has decided they won’t be commissioning it as a full series.

THR suggests the reason is that HBO wanted to make major changes before moving forward, but Murphy wasn’t keen, and so the whole thing has collapsed. HBO programming president Michael Lombardo comments, “After such a triumphant collaboration with The Normal Heart, everyone felt that Open was not the right next step for all involved. However, we fully expect to work together again in the near future.”

Although Murphy may try to set it up elsewhere, at the moment it appears we’ll never get to see a full series of Open.
