Hostel’s Eli Roth To Helm Knock Knock

February 22, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

eli-rothDirector Eli Roth had a big hit with Hostel and it’s sequel, but there’s been a six-year gap between Hostel Part II and Green Inferno (which doesn’t get released until later this year). He’s keen to ensure there isn’t another lengthy break as he’s got a new movie in the works. TheWrap reports Roth has signed on to direct the horror-thriller Knock Knock.

The movie will reunite him with his Aftershock and The Green Inferno co-writers, Nicolá Ló and Guillermo Amoedo.

The film is about ‘two young girls who show up unexpectedly at the home of a married man where they seduce him and wreak havoc on his perfect life’.

No cast members is attached at this time, but Roth will be moving quickly to find some actors as shooting is set to begin this April on a budget of less than $10 million.

Jack O’Connell Is Joining Section 6 For A New Spy Thriller

February 22, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

jack-o-connell-shirtlessLater this year Jack O’Connell may go from promising up and comer to full-on movie star, thanks to his lead role in Angelina Jolie’s directorial outing, Unbroken. He’s already lining up major new roles that will take advantage of this new status, as TheWrap reports he’s set to star in Universal’s British spy thriller, Section 6.

Aaron Berg wrote the script, which centres on the formation of British spy agency MI6 during World War I. It also takes a look at the agency’s first director, Sir George Mansfield Cummings, who served as the inspiration for M in Ian Fleming’s James Bond novels. No details have been given for Jack O’Connell’s character.

While the actor may seem a little young to be playing a spy, seeing as he’s only 23. It’s wasn’t actually that unusual at the time the movie is set.

No director is currently attached at this time, although the studio is planning to find one as soon as it can. It’s not clear when it will shoot.

Southern Baptist Sissies Trailer – Take a look at the controversial gay-themed movie as it begins its US release

February 21, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Award-winning writer/director Del Shores’ Southern Baptist Sissies has had a great reception at film festivals. Or at least it has in most places, although a venue owner in Stillwater, Oklahoma shut down a screening because of objections over the film’s exploration of the gay experience inside dogma-driven religion. Even so it went on to win Best Feature and Best Actor for star Emerson Collins at the Red Dirt International Film Festival at Stillwater.

Now it’s started its limited theatrical run in the US, so it’s a great time to take a look at the trailer.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘The film stars original play cast members Emmy winner Leslie Jordan (“Will & Grace”, “American Horror Story: Coven”), Dale Dickey (Winter’s Bone, “True Blood”, Blues For Willadean), Rosemary Alexander (Sordid Lives), Ann Walker (Sordid Lives), Newell Alexander (August: Osage County, Sordid Lives) and Joe Patrick Ward (composer for Blues For Willadean and “Sordid Lives: The Series”).  The four sissies are portrayed by Emerson Collins (“Sordid Lives: The Series”), Matthew Scott Montgomery (So Random), Luke Stratte-McClure (Yellow) and Willam Belli (“RuPaul’s Drag Race”, “Nip/Tuck”).

‘Southern Baptist Sissies is a unique hybrid of stage and film funded through an enormously successful crowd-sourcing campaign with Indiegogo.  Filmed in ten days in front of four live theatre audiences and completed with a film shoot on the theatrical stage, Southern Baptist Sissies tells the hysterical and heart-wrenching story of four boys growing up gay in the Southern Baptist church and their individual struggles to reconcile their sexuality with the anti-gay teachings of the church.’

Here’s the latest info on US screenings of the movie:

Ellen Degeneres Says She Felt ‘Hurt’ & ‘Isolated’ By Some Reactions To Her Coming Out

February 21, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

ellen-degeneresEllen Denegeres is now one of the most popular celebrities in America, but when she came out as a lesbian 1997 she was stepping into the unknown. At the time she had a popular sitcom, but there were few out celebs and as she has revealed to People magazine, dealing with some of the reactions to her news was difficult.

She says, “I didn’t think it was going to be that much of a surprise. What hurt was this: Does that label, that word, change my talent, my kindness, my heart, my intention for entertaining people? The bottom line is as simple as this, my feelings were hurt. I just gave up and moved to Ojai [California] and sat in my house as long as I could until I ran out of money. Then I started over again.”

It been said that Ellen and her character on her show coming out was the beginning of the end of that sitcom, with America not ready for a primetime show led by an LGBT character (although it wasn’t too long afterwards that Will & Grace started). For a while DeGeneres found it difficult to get work, but has since become a bit of a national institution and this year will host the Oscars.

In the interview she adds, “Looking back, I did feel isolated, I did feel rejected, but now I look at it as a movie that I saw that someone went through. I only experience the amazing life that I have right now… I’m so blessed in many ways, but I’m not always funny. I’m not always happy. I’m a human being, I don’t want to be expected to be funny all the time. It’s not real. I’m constantly learning and growing and trying to be better.”

Campaign of Hate: Russia and Gay Propaganda – Michael Lucas explores Russia’s anti-LGBT laws

February 21, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Last year gay-porn bigshot Michael Lucas turned documentarian with Undressing Israel: Gay Men In The Promised Land, which looked how great it is to be gay in Israel. Now he’s returning with Campaign of Hate: Russia and Gay Propaganda. Last November we reported on the film’s Kickstarter campaign, and now it’s headed for DVD in the US on April 1st. Ahead of that comes the trailer.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘As the Olympic torch burns bright in Sochi, Lucas returned to his native country with co-director Scott Stern to shine a light on the truth of LGBT men and women in Russia and their ever-increasing prosecution.

‘As most of the world moves forward toward gay equality, Russia is seemingly heading backward. Antigay sentiment and legislation are spreading rapidly throughout the country.  The Kremlin has chosen the LGBT community as its scapegoat in a populist campaign against supposedly decadent “Western” values, and there are ominous signs of much worse to come. Violent attacks against Russian gays are more and more common. Videos of young LGBT people being taunted and tortured have been widely distributed on the Internet.’ [Read more…]

Guardians Of The Galaxy Poster, Plus Introductions To Chris Pratt’s Character & More

February 21, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

guardians-of-the-galaxy-poster1
After the release of the trailer for Marvel’s upcoming Guardians Of The Galaxy, now we get a poster along with a quartet of featurettes introducing us to the movie’s main characters – Vin Diesel’s Groot, Dave Bautista’s Drax, Zoe Saldana’s Gamora, and Chris Pratt’s Star-Lord.

It’s a smart idea as with few people outside comic fans known the Guardians, giving an early introduction to what to many may seem bizarre characters should help sort out any qualms. You can take a look at the character featurettes below.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘From Marvel, the studio that brought you the global blockbuster franchises of Iron Man, Thor, Captain America and The Avengers, comes a new team—the Guardians of the Galaxy. An action-packed, epic space adventure, Marvel’s “Guardians of the Galaxy” expands the Marvel Cinematic Universe into the cosmos, where brash adventurer Peter Quill finds himself the object of an unrelenting bounty hunt after stealing a mysterious orb coveted by Ronan, a powerful villain with ambitions that threaten the entire universe. To evade the ever-persistent Ronan, Quill is forced into an uneasy truce with a quartet of disparate misfits—Rocket, a gun-toting raccoon, Groot, a tree-like humanoid, the deadly and enigmatic Gamora and the revenge-driven Drax the Destroyer. But when Quill discovers the true power of the orb and the menace it poses to the cosmos, he must do his best to rally his ragtag rivals for a last, desperate stand—with the galaxy’s fate in the balance.

‘Marvel’s “Guardians of the Galaxy,” which first appeared in comic books in Marvel Super-Heroes, Issue #18 (Jan. 1969). James Gunn is the director of the film with Kevin Feige producing, and Louis D’Esposito, Victoria Alonso, Jeremy Latcham, Alan Fine and Stan Lee serve as executive producers. The story is by Nicole Perlman and James Gunn, with screenplay by James Gunn. Marvel’s “Guardians of the Galaxy” releases in UK cinemas on August 1, 2014.’ [Read more…]

Edward Norton Is Going To Motherless Brooklyn As Writer, Director & Star

February 21, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

edward-nortonRumours that Edward Norton wanted to make an adaptation of Jonathan Lethem’s novel Motherless Brooklyn first emerged back in 1999. However it’s taken him a long, long time to pull all the pieces together. Now Deadline reports that he’s moving forward with the project and plans to both direct and star.

The money is coming from RatPac Entertainment, which is run by Brett Ratner and James Packer. They’ve just had a huge success with The Lego Movie and they’re behind Cameron Crowe’s upcoming new movie too.

While Lethem’s novel is set in the modern day, ‘Norton has set the story in New York in 1954, a time of great change in the city. He plays Lionel Essrog, a lonely private detective afflicted with Tourette’s syndrome, who tries to solve the murder of his mentor and only friend. Armed only with few clues and an obsessive mind, Lionel slowly unravels closely guarded secrets that have major ramifications. It leads him through Harlem jazz clubs, Brooklyn slums and sets him against thugs and Gotham power brokers to honor his friend and save a woman who might his own salvation.’

Brett Ratner comments, “We all know Edward Norton is one of the most compelling actors of our generation, but I also know he’s an exceptional writer and filmmaker… Edward’s script has melded elements of Jonathan Lethem’s terrific novel with an original story that at once feels classic and entirely fresh. And with Edward playing Lionel Essrog, the brilliant private detective with Tourette’s Syndrome, this will be a tour de force performance.”

Norton previously directed Keep The Faith and many have wondered why he hasn’t been behind the camera since as it was a great debut. Now we’ll be able to see what he came up with next.
