February 12, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

everest-preview-pic1
It’s been announced that Baltasar Kormakur’s Everest has started shooting and with it comes the first image from the movie, featuring Jason Clarke battling the element on the slopes. Here’s the press release that accompanied the image:

Universal Pictures, Walden Media and Cross Creek Pictures, announce the start of principal photography on the Working Title Films production of EVEREST. Universal Pictures will release EVEREST in North American theatres in 3D and IMAX 3D on 27th February 2015.

Inspired by the incredible events surrounding a treacherous attempt to reach the summit of the world’s highest mountain, EVEREST documents the awe-inspiring journey of two different expeditions challenged beyond their limits by one of the fiercest snowstorms ever encountered by mankind. Their mettle tested by the harshest of elements found on the planet, the climbers will face nearly impossible obstacles as a lifelong obsession becomes a breathtaking struggle for survival.

The epic adventure stars Jason Clarke (The Great Gatsby, Zero Dark Thirty), Josh Brolin (True Grit, No Country for Old Men), John Hawkes (Lincoln, Martha Marcy May Marlene) and Jake Gyllenhaal (Source Code, Brokeback Mountain). They are joined by Martin Henderson (The Ring), Emily Watson (The Book Thief), Michael Kelly (Netflix’s House of Cards) and Thomas M. Wright (television’s The Bridge). EVEREST will be directed by Baltasar Kormákur (2 Guns, Contraband) and produced by Working Title’s Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner, Cross Creek’s Brian Oliver and Tyler Thompson, as well as Nicky Kentish Barnes (About Time).

EVEREST is adapted for the screen by Mark Medoff (Children of a Lesser God) and Oscar® winner Simon Beaufoy (Slumdog Millionaire). Kormákur’s creative team includes director of photography Salvatore Totino (The Da Vinci Code), production designer Gary Freeman (upcoming Maleficent), and costume designer Guy Speranza (The World’s End).

EVEREST will shoot on location in Nepal on the foothills of Everest, the Italian Alps and at Cinecittà Studios in Rome and Pinewood Studios in the UK.

Robert Schwentke To Direct Divergent Sequel, Insurgent

February 12, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

robert-schwentkeAlthough some are wondering if Divergent will be the huge success the studio seems to think it will, Summit Entertainment is pushing ahead with plans for the sequel, Insurgent. They’ve now hired a director, as Robert Schwentke (Red) has been hired to helm.

Akiva Goldsman is writing the script, working from a draft initially written by Brian Duffield.

Insurgent continues the journey of Tris Prior (Shailene Woodley) as war now looms. As the press release about Schwentke’s hiring says, ‘Sides will be chosen, secrets will emerge, and to uncover the truth about her world, Tris must be stronger than ever because shocking choices and sacrifices lie ahead.’

Divergent was written by first time author Veronica Roth and has topped The New York Times Best Sellers list ever since being published in April of 2011. Roth wrote the novel while she was earning her undergraduate degree at Northwestern University. It’s since been followed by Insurgent and Allegiant.

Summit’s current plan is to have Divergent out this March, with Insurgent coming March 20th, 2015, while Allegiant is slated for release on March 18th, 2016.

Power Erotic Trailer – Exploring how dominance and power influence gay male sexuality

February 11, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

power-erotic-trailer
It looks like the documentary POWER EROTIC is going to be a little bit rude, but it also seems it’s going to be an interesting look at the the world of dominance and submission in gay male sexuality.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Strength, power, dominance and masculinity; buzz words seen in the majority of gay male personal ads.

‘This documentary explores how dominance and power influence gay male sexuality. Thought provoking and controversial, sometimes disturbing, yet brutally honest in its approach, this film dares to shatter illusions and raise complex issues regarding gay male sexuality.

‘The film reaches its conclusion pondering the balance between sexual attraction, fantasies and the search for loving relationships.’

Power Erotic will be screening at festivals later this year. You can find out more on the film’s Facebook page. [Read more…]

Under The Skin Trailer – Plus a poster for the unusual Scarlett Johansson sci-fi

February 11, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

We’ve had teases before for Under The Skin, but now comes the first proper trailer for a movie which has been described as a sci-fi movie that’s like nothing you’d expect from the genre – even if the plot sounds a bit like Species.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Jonathan Glazer’s third film following Sexy Beast and Birth, UNDER THE SKIN is the story of an alien in human form. Part road movie, part science fiction, part real, it’s a film about seeing our world through alien eyes.

‘Critically acclaimed at the Venice, Toronto and London film festivals, with special praise going to Mica Levi’s score, UNDER THE SKIN was shot in London and extensively on location in Scotland.

‘Glazer and Walter Campbell wrote the screenplay. Producers are James Wilson (JW Films) and Nick Wechsler (Nick Wechsler Productions). The film is based on a novel by Michel Faber. UNDER THE SKIN is a Film4 and BFI presentation, in association with Silver Reel, Creative Scotland and FilmNation Entertainment.’

It’s due out in the UK on March 14th. [Read more…]

The ‘Original’ Child Star, Shirley Temple, Dies Aged 85

February 11, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

shirley-templeShirley Temple, who’s often said to be the ‘original’ child star, has passed away in her Woodside, California home at the age of 85. The actress’ publicist, Cheryl Kagan, released the following statement: “She was surrounded by family members and caregivers. We salute her for a life of remarkable achievements as an actor, as a diplomat, and most importantly as our beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and adored wife for fifty-five years of the late and much missed Charles Alden Black.”

Born in Santa Monica, California in 1928, Shirley Temple made her film debut when she way only three years in a series of short films, where children starred in parodies of well-known feature films. In 1934 she had her breakthrough with the feature Stand Up and Cheer!, where many were incredibly impressed with her singing, dancing and acting.

Almost immediately she became a major star, starring in six more films in 1934 alone. She even received a special Academy Award in 1935 in recognition of her, “Outstanding contribution to screen entertainment during the year 1934.”

Although other child actors have been popular since, such as Jodie Foster and Macaulay Culkin, no one has really come close to Temple, who was the top box office draw between 1935 and 1938. That essentially means that before she was 10, she was a bigger star than Brad Pitt or George Clooney is today.

Some have even credited with saving 20th Century Fox from bankruptcy, thanks to the massive success of movies such Curly Top and Littlest Rebel.

Although she continued to work throughout the 1940s, as she became a young woman she never managed to recapture the success she had in the 1930s. Temple surprised many when she retired from acting in 1950, at the age of 22 (the same year she married her husband, Charles). After that, Temple’s screen appearance were incredible infrequent, although in 1958 she did appear in the anthology series, Shirley Temple’s Storybook.

After that she found a lot of success in politics, holding a number of diplomatic posts. She rose up the ranks and was appointed as the US ambassador to Ghana in 1974, and later became the US ambassador to Czechoslovakia.

To many, however, she will always be remembered as a cheery, curly-haired little girl.

Shirley Temple – April 23, 1928-February 10, 2014 – RIP.

February 11, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

jj-abramsAfter Star War: Episode VII slipped from summer to Christmas 2015, it was clear that those who thought the movie would start shooting in February were probably wrong. However we now know when cameras will start rolling as Hitfix says sources close to the production say that it will shoot from May through to the end of September.

They also confirm that most of the principle casting on the J.J. Abrams sequel is now complete, although none of those who will be taking new roles have been announced yet (we do know Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill, and Carrie Fisher will return). Announcements are expected to start any day.

J.J. Abrams said in late January that shooting he wanted to start shooting in May, and it now appears he’ll keep filming for five months. Once lensing is complete, Abrams and his crew will have over a year to work on post-production, preparing for a December 18th, 2015

Seth Rogen & Joseph Gordon-Levitt Re-team 50/50 Director For Xmas Comedy

February 11, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

50-50-pic1It looks like there’s going to be a 50/50 reunion, as THR reports that Seth Rogen & Joseph Gordon-Levitt are re-teaming with director Jonathan Levine for a Christmassy comedy.

The film doesn’t have a title yet, but Levine (who also helmed Warm Bodies) came up with script himself. The movie follows ‘three childhood best friends who reunite in New York City for their annual tradition of going out on Christmas Eve.’ Rogen and Gordon-Levitt will be two of those friends, but the third one is yet to be cast.

Sony beat out Universal and Paramount to back the movie, which they’ve put on the fast-track for a summer 2014 release. It’s not known exactly when it will shoot.

Jack Black & James Marsden Are Getting On The D-Train For A New Comedy

February 11, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

james-marsdenIt’s been revealed that Jack Black and James Marsden are teaming up for a new indie comedy, as THR reports that they’ve both signed up to star in fun sounding The D-Train.

The movie follows Jack Black’s character, who’s the chairman of a high school reunion committee chairman. He hopes that throwing a stellar bash will help with the acceptance he’s been craving and perhaps make those he went to school with think differently of him. He heads off to Los Angeles in order to try and convince his most popular classmate (Marsden), to attend their 20 year reunion. That popular guy is now a failed actor who’s working in commercials.

Mike White, who wrote the screenplay, is also set to star as the man who was Jack Black’s character’s only friend in high school. Nat Faxon is in negotiations to join the cast, but it isn’t known who he will play.

It’s a bit of a reunion for Jack Black and Mike White, as the actor has previously starred in the White written Orange County, School of Rock and Nacho Libre. Jarrad Paul and Andrew Mogel are set to make their directorial debuts with The D-Train. It’s not clear when it will shoot.

Jai Courtney & Boyd Holbrook On Final List For Terminator: Genesis’ Kyle Reese

February 11, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

boyd-holbrook2For the past couple of months Paramount has been busy putting together the cast for Terminator: Genesis. Now Deadline reports that the role of Kyle Reese is down to two actors, Jai Courtney and Boyd Holbrook.

Both actors were on a shortlist revealed last month, alongside Sam Reid (The Railway Man), Wilson Bethel (Hart of Dixie) and newcomer Tom Cocquerel. However it now appears the decision is between Courtney and Holbrook.

Michael Biehn played Kyle Reese in the original 1984 The Terminator, who was a soldier sent back from the future to protect resistance leader John Connor’s mother Sarah Connor (Linda Hamilton) from Arnie’s killer cyborg. He ends up becoming John’s father. Anton Yelchin played the role in Terminator Salvation.

For the new film, Jason Clarke will be John Connor, with Emilia Clarke as Sarah Connor. Arnold Schwarzenegger is also onboard in a currently unconfirmed role whose exact role has not been confirmed. Due to the ages of the actors, it seems like the movie will take place both in the future and some years earlier in the past, possibly before (or simultaneous to) the events of the first movie.

Alan Taylor is directing from a screenplay by Patrick Lussier and Laeta Kalogridis. it’s not clear when it will shoot.
