Russell Crowe Gets The Floating Head Treatment In A New Noah Poster

February 7, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Noah-poster3
It’s not too long until Noah hits cinemas, and to help keep interest in Darren Aronofsky’s biblical epic, a new international poster for the movie has been released.

The film follows Noah (Russell Crowe), who lives on a vast plain of volcanic ash in the lee of a volcanic glacier (the movie was largely shot in Iceland) and has to trek up a mountain every day to get to work. He is told by God to build an enormous vessel to house both his family and the animals of the world to preserve them from a flood that promises to wipe out a sin-filled world.

It’s currently due for release on March 28th, 2014.

Marc Forster To Direct Martian Sci-fi Red Rising

February 7, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Marc-ForsterAlthough World War Z was a success at the box office, director Marc Forster got a lot of the blame for the budget over-runs and need for reshoots that almost completely de-railed the project (there were even reports he and Brad Pitt almost completely stopped talking). It ensured he wasn’t asked back to helm the sequel, but now he’s got a new project, as Forster is attached to direct Red Rising, according to Deadline.

The movie is an adaptation of Pierce Brown’s sci-fi novel, which was published last month. The author has come up with the screenplay adaptation himself. Here’s the official description of the Mars-set book: ‘Darrow is a miner and a Red, a member of the lowest caste in the color-coded society of the future. Like his fellow Reds, he digs all day, believing that he and his people are making the surface of the planet livable for future generations. Darrow has never seen the sky.

‘Yet he spends his life willingly, knowing that his blood and sweat will one day result in a better future for his children. But Darrow and his kind have been betrayed. Soon he discovers that humanity already reached the surface generations ago. Vast cities and sprawling parks spread across the planet. Darrow and Reds like him are nothing more than slaves to a decadent ruling class.

‘Inspired by a longing for justice, and driven by the memory of lost love, Darrow joins a resistance group in order to infiltrate the ruling class and destroy society from within. He will stop at nothing to bring down his enemies . . . even if it means he has to become one of them to do so.’

The project is currently looking for a studio home. It’s believed to be Forster’s next film.

Evangeline Lilly in Talks For Ant-Man Female Lead

February 7, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Evangeline-LillyAfter being Hobbited up to the max recently, Evangeline Lilly has scored another major movie role, as she is in early talks to take the female lead in Marvel’s Ant-Man, according to THR.

It’s not been confirmed which character she will portray, although insiders have suggested that the actress is playing the daughter of Hank Pym (Michael Douglas), who is also the love interest of Scott Lang (Paul Rudd).

This would be a new character, as Pym didn’t have a daughter in the Marvel comic books, so it’s possible that she would be someone specifically created for the movie, or an existing character whose history has been altered. Another possibility is that she will be Janet Van Dyne, aka. The Wasp, who last October Rashida Jones was reported to be a frontrunner to play. At the time Van Dyne was described as, “a love interest and a major supporting character” in Ant-Man.

Edgar Wright is directing from a screenplay he co-wrote with Joe Cornish. Production is scheduled to begin this April.

Paul Bettany Is Vision In Avengers: Age of Ultron

February 7, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

paul-bettanyWe’ve heard Paul Bettany’s voice in three Iron Man movies and The Avengers, as Tony Stark’s artificial intelligence butler J.A.R.V.I.S. However it appears he may now be getting a body, as The Daily Mail and Variety have confirmed that Bettany is set to play Vision in Avengers: Age of Ultron.

Last August, many wondered whether Bettany would be playing Ultron in the highly-anticipated sequel, as it’s believed the big bad guy would be a corruption of Stark’s tech, so it would have made sense if Bettany had taken the part. However then Marvel announced James Spader was Ultron.

Since then there has been hints that Bettany would be Vision instead, an android created by Ultron in the Marvel comic books. Now that’s been confirmed.

The Daily Mail reports that Bettany and Jeremy Rener has been spotted at London’s Shepperton Studios, where Avengers: Age of Ultron is gearing up to start production next month. Both actors met with director Joss Whedon and performed a series of costume, hair and makeup tests. It’s said makeup experts were using various powders on Paul Bettany’s skin, trying to replicate Vision’s chalky-white complexion.

It’s difficult to say exactly how Vision plays into the movie, as he has a rather complicated history in Marvel comics and there have been various version of him. It’s most likely Ultron will create Vision as a housing for a corrupted version of Tony Stark’s AI technology.

Anna Kendrick & Rebel Wilson Confirmed For Pitch Perfect 2

February 7, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

pitch-perfect-review-slide
When it was announced a couple of weeks ago that Elizabeth Banks was set to make her directorial debut with Pitch Perfect 2, it was suggested the likes of Anna Kendrick and Rebel Wilson were likely to returns. However at the time no deals were in place. Now that’s changed, as it’s been announced both actresses will be back for another round of a capella singing, according to THR.

It still isn’t known if other Pitch Perfect stars, such as Skylar Astin, Ben Platt, Brittany Snow, Anna Camp or Alexis Knapp, will be coming returning. No story details have been revealed either.

The first film was a surprise success, earning $113 million worldwide from a $17 million budget, and taking in over $135 million from Blu-ray and DVD sales. Even the soundtrack, which featured Anna Kendrick’s triple-platinum single ‘Cups’, sold over 1 million units.

It’s not clear when the sequel will shoot, although Universal plans to have Pitch Perfect 2 in cinemas in 2015.

February 7, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

robert-luketicFor a while now, the people behind The Expendables have been working on a all-female spin-off called ExpendaBelles. Now that movie has a director, as Robert Luketic has signed on to helm the film for Millennium Films.

Deadline has also released the first plot synopsis for the movie: ‘When America’s Navy SEALs are wiped out trying to penetrate the island lair of a deadly despot who has captured one of the world’s top nuclear scientists, it becomes clear that there is no such thing as the right man for the job and that this is a mission so impossible that only women can handle it. The only way in: some of the world’s deadliest female operatives must pose as high-class call-girls shipped in by private plane to satisfy a dictator-and instead save the scientist and the day.’

Philip Seymour Hoffman’s Friend Sues Over Gay Affair Story

February 6, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

philip-seymour-hoffmanThe internet was abuzz earlier today over a story published by the National Enquirer, which claimed Philip Seymour Hoffman’s friend, the playwright David Bar Katz, had revealed he had an affair with the actor, which had led to the break-up of Hoffman’s 15-year relationship with Mimi O’Donnell. It also said Katz had seen Hoffman taking drugs, and that Philip was “confused about his sexuality” and “wanted heroin and the gay life.” Although it did say Katz was unaware of how bad the situation was, which of course led to Hoffman’s death last Sunday.

Katz has been fast to hit back at the Enquirer, saying the entire story and its alleged interview are a lie. His lawyers have filed a $50 million lawsuit in the New York Supreme Court, which states: “The story is a complete fabrication: There was no interview. Bar Katz and Hoffman were never lovers. Bar Katz did not see Hoffman freebasing cocaine the night before he died, or at any other time. Bar Katz never saw Hoffman use heroin or cocaine.”

The playwright’s lawyer, Judd Burstein, added via THR: “This article is just disgusting. Here you have Phil’s family and his friends grieving, and the Enquirer comes along seeking to make a buck through putrid lies. Worse still, it appears that the Enquirer sent out a press release hyping the story so that it could sell more copies of the magazine. I do not know how these people can sleep at night.”

Many were dubious about the story before Katz’s lawsuit, not just because it was published by the notoriously unreliable National Enquirer, but also because it quoted the writer as saying things like “we were homosexual lovers”, a sentence very few gay people would ever use, especially not one paid for his words.

Award Show Heckler Accuses Jared Leto Of ‘Trans Misogyny’ Over Dallas Buyers’ Club Role

February 5, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

dallas-buyers-club-slide
It seems to be the season for film award heckled. A few weeks ago 12 Years A Slave director Steve McQueen was shouted at by famously contrarian film critic Armand White as “an embarrassing doorman and garbage man” at the New York Critics Circle Awards (White lost his job and membership of the Critics Circle over the incident).

Now, while Jared Leto was accepting one of the Santa Barbara Film Festival’s Virtuosos Awards on Tuesday for his performance as transgender AIDS patient Rayon in Dallas Buyers Club, a woman in the crowd yelled, “You don’t deserve an award. Trans misogyny does not deserve an award!”

THR says Leto asked the woman to explain what she meant, to which she replied, “You’re a man. You shouldn’t play a transgendered role!”

Leto continued to engage with the young woman (who some reports have suggested was transgender herself), saying, “Because I’m a man, I don’t deserve to play that part? So you would hold a role against someone who happened to be gay or lesbian — they can’t play a straight part?”Then you’ve made sure people that are gay, people that aren’t straight, people like the Rayons of the world would never have the opportunity to turn the tables and explore parts of that art.”

This response reportedly gained a large round of applause from the audience. The actor then invited the young woman backstage and spent 15 minutes talking to her and her friend.

It’s a situation where you can see both sides. Leto is right that it would be wrong to tell a gay person they can’t play a straight role. However if you shift that to saying white actors should be able to play African-Americans, few people would agree that was right. It would undoubtedly have been better if they had found a transgender person to play the role, but does having Jared Leto in the part intrinsically amount to ‘trans misogyny’?

Planes: Fire and Rescue Trailer – Dusty wants to save some lives

February 5, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Planes may not have grossed $100 million in the US, but thanks to the fact it cost far less than most Disney theatrical movies ($50 million versus, for example, Frozen’s $150 million) it was still a significant success for the company. It also ensures the House Of Mouse put a quick sequel in the works, which will be in cinemas this summer.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘“Planes: Fire & Rescue” is a new comedy-adventure about second chances, featuring a dynamic crew of elite firefighting aircraft devoted to protecting historic Piston Peak National Park from raging wildfire. When world famous air racer Dusty (voice of Dane Cook) learns that his engine is damaged and he may never race again, he must shift gears and is launched into the world of aerial firefighting. Dusty joins forces with veteran fire and rescue helicopter Blade Ranger and his courageous team, including spirited super scooper Dipper (voice of Julie Bowen), heavy-lift helicopter Windlifter, ex-military transport Cabbie and a lively bunch of brave all-terrain vehicles known as The Smokejumpers. Together, the fearless team battles a massive wildfire and Dusty learns what it takes to become a true hero.’

It’ll be in US cinemas on July 18th and in the UK on August 8th. [Read more…]

Kate Winslet Scores Triple Nine For Director John Hillcoat

February 5, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

kate-winsletKate Winslet may have missed out on an Oscar nomination for Labor Day (although she got a Golden Globe nod), but she’s still hot property, and may find a whole new fanbase if the movie version of Divergent is as popular as some expect when it’s released in March.

While she’s likely to be shooting the Divergent sequel, Insurgent, later this year, she’s also lined up another role, as Variety reports she’ll star in John Hillcoat’s (Lawless, The Proposition) Triple Nine. She joins the previously cast Casey Affleck and Chiwetel Ejiofor.

The movie is about a group of criminals who plan on murdering an LAPD cop (Casey Affleck), as they think this will divert attention away from the massive heist they are planning on the other side of town. Ejiofor will be the criminal mastermind behind the whole operation. It’s not clear who Winslet will play.

‘Triple nine’ is police code for when an officer needs immediate assistance.
