Dwayne Johnson Up For Earthquake Thriller San Andreas: 3D

October 15, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

dwayne-johnsonOver the last few years there have been numerous earthquake-based disaster flicks that have been put into development, but none have shown up in cinemas yet. Now one is moving forward, as Variety reports that Dwayne Johnson is reuniting with Journey 2: The Mysterious Island director Brad Peyton for San Andreas: 3D.

Johnson will play a man who travels across California to rescue his estranged daughter after a massive earthquake strikes. The project has been in development at New Line Cinema since 2011, when Allan Loeb (The Switch) signed on to rewrite the original script by Andre Fabrizio and Jeremy Passmore (Special). Lost’s Carlton Cuse signed on to rewrite the script in 2012, although the most recent draft was written by Chad Hayes and Carey Hayes (The Conjuring).

The current plan is to shoot in the first quarter of 2014, although there’s no news on when it might be in cinemas.

Iron Man 3’s Ty Simpkins Joins Jurassic World, Jake Johnson May Sign On Too

October 15, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

ty-simpkinsOften bringing child actors into franchises can be cheesy, but Ty Simpkins was a great little addition to Iron Man 3. It was obviously a good showcase for the young actor, as the 12-year-old has signed on for a lead role in Jurassic World, according to Deadline.

New Girl and Drinking Buddies star Jake Johnson is said to be in contention for an unspecified role, although the studio has not confirmed his possible involvement. If he signs on, the actor will reunite with his Safety Not Guaranteed director Colin Trevorrow. A few weeks ago it was revealed that Bryce Dallas Howard is in talks for the film, and it appears she still hasn’t signed on the dotted line.

The film will apparently take us back to the original Jurassic Park island, which is now a working theme park with real-life dinosaurs. The film is due for release on June 12th, 2015.

New Kill Your Darlings Clip Has Daniel Radcliffe Reading Alan Ginsberg’s Poetry

October 14, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

While there been a lot of talk about the fact Daniel Radcliffe is playing gay in Kill Your Darlings, there’s been less interest in the fact he’s playing one of the most renowned poets of the 20th Century, Alan Gisberg. While Kill Your Darlings is set before Ginsberg wrote seminal works such as Howl, a new clip show Alan reading some of his youthful verse to Lucien Carr (Dane DeHaan), with Radcliffe ensuring the whole thing is infused with a sense of young love.

Based on a true story, Kill Your Darlings charts how a murder helped shape the lives of a group of young men who went on to become the beat generation. Dane DeHaan plays Lucien Carr, the man who introduced Howl writer Allen Ginsberg (Radcliffe) to the likes of William S. Burroughs (Ben Foster) and Jack Kerouac (Jack Huston).

During these early, hedonistic days, a man called David Kammerer (Michael C. Hall) fell for Carr, with his infatuation becoming increasingly obsessive and unhinged – the gay Ginsberg once discovered Kammerer trying to murder Jack Kerouac’s cat. It eventually resulted in Carr stabbing Kammerer to death him and going to prison for his murder. The violent event is said to have indelibly changed all the people involved and etched its way into the published works of the Beat writers. You can watch the trailer here.

The film’s out in the US on October 16th, with the UK release recently shifted to December 6th. [Read more…]

Reaching For The Moon Trailer – Miranda Otto falls in love with a woman in a 1950s true story

October 14, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Synopsis: This sumptuous English-language ’50s period piece recounts the mid-life years of Pulitzer Prize-winning poet Elizabeth Bishop (played by Miranda Otto, Lord of the Rings) when she left America to live and write in Rio de Janiero — where she would also fall in love with well-off architect Lota de Macedo Soares (butched up to the hilt by beautifully handsome Brazilian TV star Gloria Pires).

Initial hostilities between the pair make way for a complicated yet long-lasting love affair that dramatically alters Bishop’s relationship to the world around her. From renowned Brazilian director Bruno Barreto (Dona Flor and Her Two Husbands), Reaching for the Moon is an intimate snapshot of the search for inspiration, wherever and however you find it.

Gravity Holds The US Box Office Top Spot With $44 Million

October 14, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

gravity-poster1While some weren’t sure whether Gravity’s incredible visuals would translate into box office success, the film is now a bona fide hit, taking $44 million in its second weekend to top the box office once more. That’s just a 20% drops, which is incredibly unusual for a film that took over $50 million in its first outing (indeed it’s the best hold ever for such a film outside the holidays).

Gravity also had the second best weekend ever for IMAX, taking $9 million in that format, while 86% of the gross was for the 3D version, almost double what many of the summer’s 3D openings had. It shows that if Hollywood can present something where viewers feel they’re really getting something for a premium ticket, they will turn up. It’s expected by the end of its run it’ll be in the $250-300 million range, and perhaps beyond.

The Tom Hanks drama Captain Phillips ended up in second place with $26 million in its first three days. It’s a pretty good start, ahead of the likes the Zero Dark Thirty and Argo, suggesting it’ll be a real success by the end of its run, helped by great reviews.

The only other new movie in the top 10 was Machete Kills, which came in at number four with a verylacklustre $3.7 million. That’s just a third of the first film’s opening and one of the worst starts ever for a movie opening on more than 2,500 screens. It probably didn’t help that while the marketing started with a bang, it went on for so long that any hype dissipated before it opened.

Outside the top 10, Romeo And Juliet, starring Douglas Booth and Hailee Steinfeld, proved a major flop, taking just half-a-million.

Take a look below for the US box office top 10 for the weekend of October 11th-13th.

Rank Title Weekend Gross (millions) Total Gross to date (millions)
1 Gravity $44.2 $123.4
2 Captain Phillips $26.0 $26,0
3 Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs 2 $14.2 $78.0
4 Machete Kills $3.7 $3,7
5 Runner Runner $3.7 $14.1
6 Prisoners $3.6 $53.6
7 Insidious Chapter 2 $2.6 $78.4
8 Rush $2.3 $22.2
9 Don Jon $2.3 $20.1

Iris Prize 2013 LGBT Short Film Festival Announces Its Winners, With Australia Taking The Big Prize

October 13, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Gorilla - Iris Prize 2013 winner

Gorilla – Iris Prize 2013 winner

Over the past few days, Cardiff has played host to the annual Iris Prize Festival, where over 40 of the best LGBT-themed short films were screened, along with some great feature-length movies. It’s all been leading up to the awards ceremony, which included the Iris Prize itself, where the best short in the festival is honoured and the filmmaker given funding and support worth £25,000 to make a new film!

That gong has now been given out, with Gorilla, directed by Tim Marshall, picking up the main prize. That makes it two in a row for Australia, as last year’s winner, Grant Scicluna’s The Wilding, was also from the country. Gorilla is about a newly formed couple who are forced to face the unknown in their lives when a mysterious woman arrives at their secluded campsite.

Gilly Adams, representative of the jury, commented on this year’s film selection, “IRIS 2013 has reminded us of the enjoyment to be had in discussing film. We’ve learned new ways of looking at cinema through sharing ideas, and often found our opinions changed by the challenge of listening to opposing views. We were impressed by the strength of the documentaries in this year’s selection – subtler and perhaps less angry than in the past. Across the board we felt that the storytelling and the film making were better and a cause for optimism about the future of LGBT cinema.”

It was also announced that the festival’s award for best feature film was won by Eytan Fox for Cupcakes. The Award carries a £1,000 cash prize donated by Martin Briggs from Cardiff and is selected by the Friends of Iris. The Best UK Short was won by Jay Bedwani for his film My Mother. Jay will be invited to be a member of the 2014 Iris Prize International Jury. .

For Dorian, directed by Rodrigo Barriuso (Canada), and The Last Time I Saw Richard, directed by Nicholas Verso (Australia), were highly commended by the jury,

The awards for best actor and best actress in a feature film were presented to Ryan Steele for his performance as Chip in the film Five Dances and Sabine Wolf for her performance as Katja in Two Mothers.

Full Hercules: The Legend Begins Trailer – Kellan Lutz gets buff and action-packed

October 13, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

A couple of days ago, a very brief teaser for Hercules: The Legend Begins landed. No the full promo has arrived, showing off the rather 300-ish visuals for the Renny Harlin directed movie, as well as Kellan Lutz looking very buff in the title role.

Early suggestions had said this would keep the supernatural aspects of the legends of Hercules, but it appears from this trailer that he’s not got any full-on superpowers – although he will be engaging in the usual unlikely action hero shenanigans and certainly appears to be incredibly strong.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘In Ancient Greece 1200 B.C., a queen succumbs to the lust of Zeus to bear a son promised to overthrow the tyrannical rule of the king and restore peace to a land in hardship. But this prince, Hercules, knows nothing of his real identity or his destiny. He desires only one thing: the love of Hebe, Princess of Crete, who has been promised to his own brother. When Hercules learns of his greater purpose, he must choose: to flee with his true love or to fulfill his destiny and become the true hero of his time. The story behind one of the greatest myths is revealed in this action-packed epic – a tale of love, sacrifice and the strength of the human spirit.’

A second Hercules movie is also due out next year, with the other starring Dwayne Johnson, with Brett Ratner directing.

Russian Gay Film Festival Gets Conviction For Being A ‘Foreign Agent’ Overturned

October 13, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

bok-o-bok-festivalThere’s been a lot of publicity over the increasingly hostile situation for gay people in Russia, with laws banning the promotion of homosexuality, as well as new rules that don’t just seek to stop foreign gay couples adopting Russian orphans, but could stop straight couples from countries that permit gay adoption as well.

One of the less reported parts of the crackdown is the prosecution of the LGBT film festival, Bok o Bok (Side by Side), which started out in St. Petersberg but has since expanded to other cities, such as Moscow, Tomsk, Arkhangelsk, Perm and Novosibirsk. Earlier this year it was fined 500,000 roubles (about £10,000) after a judge ruled that it had taken donations from overseas, in contravention of a controversial new law.

While that conviction was initially upheld at its first appeal, it’s now been overturned at its final appeal. Mikhail Pavlyuchenko, Deputy Chairman of the Saint Petersburg City Court, stated, “The Magistrates Court had incorrectly applied the procedural provisions of the Administrative Code, and in the case of the District Court the Judge overlooked these significant violations of procedural requirements.”

A statement from Bok o Bok reads, “We are pleased with the decision and finally justice has been done! We are grateful to our lawyers, Dmitry Bartenev and Sergey Golubok, who displayed a high level of professionalism throughout the case, to all the individuals and organizations who rendered help and support during these difficult times and to those who made generous donations in order to pay the fine. At present we are requesting the return of the funds paid to the authorities and additionally we will be suing for damages incurred by the organization. We hope that other NGOs also being prosecuted under this law will also win, restoring justice to the court system in Russia.”

The law the festival was fined under says that any non Government organisation must register if they are in receipt of funding from foreigners. The organisers of Bok o Bok say they didn’t register because they haven’t received any foreign funding, and that the judge completely ignored them when they tried to argue they had not broken any laws. Many have said the law is there purely to increase the control the government has over groups that disagree with its views.

St Petersburg was the first major Russian city to enact laws banning the promotion of homosexuality, which have no spread out nationally. So it’s little surprise the festival has faced difficulty there. (Source: PinkNews)
