Her Trailer – Joaquin Phoenix & Scarlett Johansson star in Spike Jonze’s latest

August 7, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

We haven’t had a feature length movie from Spike Jonze since Where The Wild Things Are in 2009, but now he’s returning with Her, which has just released its first trailer. Joaquin Phoenix and Scarlett Johansson star in the film, with the trailer working almost like a short in its own right. It’s something slightly different and yet the same from Jonze, as he’s never really done a proper romantic drama before – even if this is a romance between a man and a computer.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Theodore (Joaquin Phoenix), a lonely writer, purchases a newly developed operating system designed to grant the user’s every command. To Theodore’s surprise, a romantic relationship develops between himself and the operating system.’

Her is due out in the US in November. [Read more…]

A new pic from Hunger Games: Catching Fire has arrived, via EW, which shows Jennifer Lawrence as Katniss Everdeen, sitting in a chair and waiting to be thrust back into the arena.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Catching Fire begins as Katniss Everdeen has returned home safe after winning the 74th Annual Hunger Games along with fellow tribute Peeta Mellark. Winning means that they must turn around and leave their family and close friends, embarking on a “Victor’s Tour” of the districts. Along the way Katniss senses that a rebellion is simmering, but the Capitol is still very much in control as President Snow prepares the 75th Annual Hunger Games (The Quarter Quell) – a competition that could change Panem forever.’

The film’s due out November 22nd.

Meryl Streep, Alexander Skarsgard & Cameron Monaghan Join Jeff Bridges in The Giver

August 7, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Meryl-StreepJust yesterday it was revealed Meryl Streep had signed up to reunite with Robert De Niro for The Good House. Now Deadline and The Wrap report that she’s also circling The Giver, which perhaps surprisingly will mark the first time she’s star alongside Jeff Bridges. Alexander Skarsgard & Cameron Monaghan are also up for the movie.

Phillip Noyce is set to direct the sci-fi drama, which is based on a novel by author Lois Lowry. The story is set in the future where the entire range of human emotion has been forgotten. In the society, The Giver has been given the right to remember the past in case it is deemed necessary to make use of it. A young boy named Jonas (Brenton Thwaites) has been given the right to become the next Giver and his life is thrown into question when he begins his training with an elderly Giver.

Meryl Streep will be playing the Chief Elder in the movie, an antagonist and “authoritarian charged with keeping order in [the] society.” Jeff Bridges meanwhile will be the title character, who delivers the memories that uproot a rebellion in the young man. Skarsgard is set to play Jonas’ father, while Monaghan will portray Asher, Jonas’ best friend.

The Weinstein Company and Walden Media are backing the movie, although it isn’t clear when it will shoot.

Leonardo DiCaprio May Be Going Viking With King Harald

August 7, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

leo-dicaprioLeo DiCaprio must really love the Vikings, as a few years ago he was attached to star in he was attached to star in an epic Norse tale, which Mel Gibson was set to direct. However when Gibson went back into meltdown mode, the project disappeared.

However Warner Bros. and DiCaprio’s Appian Way production company have bought Mark L. Smith’s Viking-based script pitch, King Harald, which will be developed for Leo to star in. DiCaprio is apparently a history buff and is keen to get the movie off the ground.

Deadline says the movie is about Harald Hardrada, the 11th Century conqueror who has been called the last great Viking king. Harald was ‘King of Norway for two decades, but his quest for power and thirst for battle led to his being exiled for a time to Russia and then returning in triumph.’

The movie is apparently envisioned as a Braveheart-style story, so it’ll be hoping to go epic.

Documentary About Matthew Shepard, Made By His Friend, Seeks Funding

August 6, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

The murder of young gay man Matthew Shepard in 1996 caused waves around the world, with some suggesting it marked a major turning point in the gay rights struggle in America, galvanising both LGBT people and allies to push for full acceptance.

Now a documentary, made by those who knew Matthew, is being made about the murdered 21-year-old, and it’s currently seeking $25,000 on Kickstarter to finish the film. Called Matt Shepard Is a Friend of Mine, the film ‘explores the life and death of Matthew Shepard and examines the wreckage left behind after his murder.

Framed through the very personal lens of friends and family, it’s a story of loss, love, and courage in the face of unspeakable tragedy.’

The doc has already been made (with the support of the likes of the Matthew Shepard Foundation and the Human Rights Campaign), but it needs completion funding to sort out things such as Marketing & Publicity, Mastering costs, Booking fees,Classroom versions and Professional fees.

Director Michele Josue comments on the Kickstarter page, ‘Matt was a close friend and his death was devastating. Making this film has been incredibly difficult yet so meaningful, and we’ve been working steadily for the past 3 years to bring this film to fruition…

‘While we’ve come a long way in the last fifteen years, ignorance and hate are still a part of today’s society. MATT SHEPARD IS A FRIEND OF MINE highlights the responsibility we all have to help make sure people around the world are not at risk of falling victim to the same story ending Matt was.’

Fifteen years ago, on the night of October 6, 1998, two men lured Matthew Shepard, a gay freshman at the University of Wyoming, from a bar in Laramie, WY. He was kidnapped and driven to a field where he was tortured and tethered to a fence and left to die. Never regaining consciousness, Matthew succumbed to the severe injuries from the attack and died on October 12, 1998.

The murder of Matthew Shepard was a devastating tragedy that made countless headlines around the world. As people denounced the hatred and senseless violence that caused Matthew’s death, a much-needed dialogue about hate crimes and intolerance against the LGBT community began and continues to this day.

If you want to find out more about how you can help the film get to audiences (and the goodies on offer if you do), head over to Kickstarter. [Read more…]

Ian McKellen Expresses Solidarity With Russian LGBTs

August 6, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Ian McKellen shows support for LGBT Russians
News of increasingly anti-gay attitudes and problems emerging from Russia is emerging on a seemingly daily basis – the latest being reports that a gay teen kidnapped and tortured by neo-Nazis has died from his injuries. The issues have undoubtedly intensified with the signing of a law banning ‘promotion of non-traditional relationships’, which seems to have been taken by homophobes to mean it’s now open season on LGBT people.

Ian McKellen has now stepped forwards to express his solidarity with Russian LGBT people, showing his support in the photo above, which was taken after a performance of Harold Pinter’s No Man’s Land, which he is currently starring in at the Berkeley Rep in California, alongside friends and fellow X-Men star, Sir Patrick Stewart.

The pic was the result of a meeting with blogger Michael Petrelis, who says, ‘I went to the theater with a rainbow flag and four signs, hoping Sir Ian would be amenable to a photo-op, one that might send a clear message to the Russian LGBT people. He and I spoke briefly about the plight of LGBT citizens of Russia, and Sir Ian expressed his solidarity with them and deplored the escalating violence against our community over there.’

McKellen then posed for the pic above, expressing his support for gay Russians.

We can all hope that the situation for gay Russians improves quickly, and that perhaps with the international spotlight being shone on the issue and Russia due to host the Winter Olympics in a few months time (with some already agitating for a boycott over fears for LGBT athletes as the games), something can be done to improve the situation.

Diana Trailer – Naomi Watts takes on the People’s Princess

August 6, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Naomi Watts was walking into a potential firestorm the moment she took the title role in Oliver Hirschbiegel’s Diana, although on the evidence of this new trailer, she may pull off the portrayal of the People’s Princess. Whether the film will be any good is yet to be seen though.

The film focuses on the time after Princess Diana’s divorce from Prince Charles and a secret romance between the then-most famous woman in the world and a Pakistani heart surgeon (Naveen Andrews), who the movie suggests she fell harder for than her more public relationships with James Hewitt and Dodi Fayed.

Those worrying about whether it will wallow in her death apparently don’t need to worry, as it’s said it solely focuses on this romance. Diana reaches UK cinemas on September 20th, but no US date is currently set. [Read more…]

New Jobs Trailer – Ashton Kutcher is an Official American Legend

August 6, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

While Jobs got a bit of a mixed reaction when it debuted earlier this year at Sundance, there’s certainly a fair amount of interesting in the movie. Now a new trailer has popped up, so we can get our own feel for the film, which promises it’s about an ‘Official American Legend’.

The film is about Apple co-founder Steve Jobs (Ashton Kutcher), following him ‘from the enthusiasm and self-discovery of his youth through his darkest days, brightest triumphs, and the ultimate power of his drive, his passions, and his undying will to change everything we thought possible. Dark, honest, and uncompromising, Jobs plunges into the depths of Steve Jobs’ character, uncovering his driving motivations, his gifts, his flaws, his failures, and his ultimate successes.’

It hits US cinemas on August 16th. No UK date is set yet. [Read more…]

Robert De Niro & Meryl Streep To Reunite For The Good House

August 6, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

robert-de-niroRobert De Niro and Meryl Streep have starred together in The Deer Hunter, Falling In Love and Marvin’s Room, but they haven’t been in a movie together since 1996. Now they’re getting back together as Deadline reports they’ve both come aboard The Good House, based on Ann Leary’s bestselling novel.

The book is ‘darkly comic, and told through the eyes of Hildy Good (Streep), a New England realtor and not-so-recovering alcoholic whose perfectly compartmentalized life starts to come apart at the seams when she forms a new friendship with Rebecca McCallister. As Rebecca becomes the subject of town gossip, Hildy rekindles an old flame with Frank Getchell (De Niro), a tell it like it is Yankee, who tries to un-complicate her complicated life.’

Michael Cunningham, the Pulitzer Prize-winning author of The Hours is set to write the script. It doesn’t appear a director is currently set. There’s no news either on when it might shoot.

Harrison Ford To Star In The Expendables 3, But Bruce Willis Won’t Return

August 6, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

harrison-fordWay back last November there were rumours that Sylvester Stallone was trying to secure Harrison Ford for The Expendables 3. It’s taken a long time but Stallone has now confirmed that Harrison will indeed be part of the movie but Bruce Willis, who appeared in the first two movies, won’t return.

Stallone tweeted, ‘WILLIS OUT… HARRISON FORD IN !!!! GREAT NEWS !!!!! Been waiting years for this!!!!’

It was recently revealed that Kellan Lutz is in talks to play a member of a younger group of Expendables who will go up against the likes of Stallone, Jason Statham, Dolph Lundgren, Terry Crews and Randy Couture. Mel Gibson is currently set to be the villain, with Jackie Chan, Steven Seagal, Milla Jovovich and Wesley Snipes also rumoured to star.

Patrick Hughes (Red Hill) is directing from a screenplay by Richard Wenk. Production is scheduled to begin later this summer.

There’s also suggestions of a rift between Willis and Stallone as Sylvester followed his tweet above with the message, ‘GREEDY AND LAZY …… A SURE FORMULA FOR CAREER FAILURE’, although didn’t say what he was talking about.
