Samuel L. Jackson To Play The Villain In Matthew Vaughn’s Secret Service

August 2, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

samuel-l-jacksonMatthew Vaughn signed Colin Firth months ago to play the lead role in Secret Service, but it’s only now he’s pulling together the rest of the cast. Taron Egerton joined last week and now Variety reports that Samuel L. Jackson has signed on to play the villain.

Firth is set to play a veteran MI6 spy who takes his nephew Gary (Taron Egerton) under his wing. He hopes that mentoring the young man in the ways of covert affairs will put him on the straight and narrow. There’s no word on exactly how Jackson fits into the plot.

Vaughn is eyeing Emma Watson and Bella Heathcote for the female lead, although no official decision has been made yet.

aughn is directing from a screenplay he co-wrote with Jane Goldman, which is adapted from the comic book series created by Mark Millar and Dave Gibbons. Production is slated to begin sometime this fall.

Human Rights Campaign Urges Hollywood To Help In Fight Against Anti-Gay Russian Laws

August 2, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

In the last few weeks there’s been a lot of talk about Russia’s increasingly anti-gay attitudes, which include recent legislation stopping ‘gay propaganda’ (essentially making it illegal to support gay rights), as well as banning foreign gay couples from adopting Russian children.

There has also been shock at reports of gangs luring luring young gay men to meets (via websites), then robbing, beating and torturing them – and seemingly doing it with impunity as some have been happy to post pictures of them doing it online.

Some have suggested a boycott of the Winter Olympics, which will be held in the Russian city of Sochi, while many gay bars have vowed not to serve Russian vodka. Now the Human Rights Campaign has penned an open letter asking for Hollywood’s help in raising awareness of the issues.

Chad Griffin, the group’s president, wrote in his letter to the presidents of the international divisions of 20th Century Fox, Sony Pictures Entertainment, Paramount PIctures, Universal Pictures, Warner Bros. Pictures, and The Walt Disney Studios that, “Hollywood has always been a dauntless supporter of LGBT equality — well before public support was easy or politically popular. Now that progress is speeding up here at home, I know you’ll agree that we have a moral responsibility not to ignore backsliding abroad.”

He hopes that Hollywood will “take advantage of all currently-scheduled film premieres in Russia to make clear and visible statements of support for Russia’s beleaguered LGBT community and of opposition to the Russian government’s campaign of institutionalized hate.”

The letter also urges movie execs to make clear the ‘chilling effect’ that laws could have on film production in the country.

You can take a look at the full text of the letter here.

It’s difficult to know whether Hollywood can have any effect on the Russian government, which currently seems determined to show off its anti-gay credentials (many suggest the government doesn’t really care about gay people, but they do like the votes anti-gay policies can generate). However some have expressed hope that this may actually mark that Russia is on the way to gay acceptance. They’ve drawn parallels to what happened in many western nations in the 1980s when gay people began living more openly, which resulted in a backlash that saw many countries enacting new anti-gay laws (such as the UK Section 58, which banned the ‘promotion’ of homosexuality in schools). Hopefully that is what’s happening in Russia and it won’t take them as long as it did many Western countries to find a bit more acceptance.

August 2, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Cheyenne JacksonShortly after gay marriage was legalised in New York, actor Cheyenne Jackson married his partner Monte Lapka, after being together for 11 years. However they’ve now sadly announced they are to divorce.

In a statement to EW they say, “Cheyenne Jackson and his husband Monte Lapka have mutually decided to divorce. The couple have been together for 13 years, and were married in New York state two years ago. It is an amicable parting and understandably, a private matter.”

The statement comes shortly after Queerty reported that the two have been living separate lives for some time, and there are rumours the 38-year-old Glee and 30 Rock star has taken up with a younger man.

He’s also said to be sporting a new look with a handlebar mustache and new “prison tattoos,” making is sound like he’s having a bit of a mid-life (or at least post-relationship) crisis. [Read more…]

New We’re The Millers Red Band Trailer – Jason Sudeikis’ gets Jennifer Aniston as a fake wife

August 1, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Jennifer Aniston obviously didn’t have enough of fake relationships in Just Go With It, as she’s having another one in We’re The Millers. A new red band trailer for the movie has arrived, featuring Aniston alongside Jason Sudekis, Emma Roberts and young British actor Will Poulter.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘David is a small-time pot dealer whose clientele includes chefs and soccer moms, but no kids—after all, he has his scruples. So what could go wrong? Plenty. Having been jumped by a trio of gutter punks who steal his stash and his cash, they leave him in major debt to a drug lord. In order to wipe the slate clean, David must now become a big-time drug smuggler by bringing Brad’s latest shipment in from Mexico. Twisting the arms of his neighbours including a cynical stripper, a wannabe customer and a tatted-and-pierced streetwise teen, he devises a fool proof plan. One fake wife, two pretend kids and a huge, shiny campervan later, the “Millers” are on a roadtrip that is sure to end with a bang.’

It hits US cinemas on August 7th and the UK on August 23rd. [Read more…]

Alec Baldwin Joining Bradley Cooper In Cameron Crowe’s Next

August 1, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

alec-baldwinMel Gibson’s racist rants may have essentially scuppered his career, but it appears Alec Baldwin isn’t going to be too badly affected by his recent homophobic tirade, where he lashed out at a gay journalist who’d said Baldwin’s wife was tweeting during James Gandolfini’s funeral. But then, his screaming that his daughter was a ‘thoughtless little pig’ was barely a blip either.

Now he’s in the process of booking a new role, as Deadline reports that he’s in talks to join Cameron Crowe’s currently untitled next movie. Bradley Cooper, Emma Stone, Rachel McAdams and Danny McBride are all signed up for the movie, which is about a defence contractor (Bradley Cooper) who is in Hawaii to oversee the launch of a weapons satellite. However, he ends up falling for an Air Force pilot (Emma Stone) while they work together to sabotage the launch. The story also features a talking computer and supernatural island forces, so there’s a bit of everything thrown in there.

The movie was previously in the works under the name Deep Tiki back in 2008 with Ben Stiller and Reese Witherspoon attached. It’s since been reworked and will be going into production soon.

Elizabeth Debicki Joins Henry Cavill & Armie Hammer In The Man From U.N.C.L.E

August 1, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Elizabeth-DebickiAfter impressing as Jordan Baker in The Great Gatsby, Elizabeth Debicki has booked another high profile role, joining Armie Hammer and Henry Cavill in The Man From U.N.C.L.E, according to Variety.

The film is based on the 1960s The Man from U.N.C.L.E., which followed two agents from United Network Command for Law Enforcement (U.N.C.L.E.), who try to stop the evil-doers from Technological Hierarchy for the Removal of Undesirables and the Subjugation of Humanity (T.H.R.U.S.H.).

Cavill will be Napoleon Solo (played by Robert Vaughn in the TV series), with Armie Hammer as Illya Kuryakin (David McCallum). Alicia Vikander is also set to star, with Guy Ritchie directing. There’s no news on exactly who Debicki will play, but she’ll be some sort of femme fatale role.

A film version of the series has been mooted for decades, with just this latest attempt taking over 10 years to get from conception to the point where it’s ready to go in front of the cameras (it’ll shoot in September), with various writer and directors coming and going in that time. Everyone from Steven Soderbergh to George Clooney has been involved, but it’s only now that it’s actually happening.

A Third Avatar Sequel Is Announced With New Films Coming 2016, 2017 and 2018

August 1, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Avatar-posterJust yesterday we reported that James Cameron has hired Josh Friedman to help with the script for Avatar 2. Now we know why he’s keen to get a hand, as while we knew he was working on Avatar 2 & 3, Variety reports that it was revealed today that Avatar 4 is also being planned.

It’s not just Friedman who’s been hired to help with the screenplay though, as Rick Jaffa & Amanda Silver (Rise of the Planets of the Apes), and Shane Salerno (Savages) have also been signed to collaborate with Cameron on the screenplays for Avatar 2, 3, 4.

While a 2015 release for Avatar 2 had been bandied about, for a long time that’s seemed optimistic. Now it’d been revealed that part 2 will hit cinemas December 2016, with the other two coming December 2017 and 2018.

Filming on the live-action and motion-capture parts of the film will start early next year, with all the movies being shot at once (so that’s a hell of a lot of screenplay to cover, explaining why so many writers are needed).

Harry Potter Helmer David Yates May Take On Scarface Reboot

August 1, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

David-YatesThanks to Harry Potter, David Yates has become one of the most in-demand directors in Hollywood. However after making four Hogwarts movies in as many years, we haven’t had a movie from him since. He’s signed up for a lot of things, such as a new take on Tarzan, but nothing’s worked out.

Now Deadline reports that Yates in in final talks with Universal Pictures to direct the remake of Scarface that has been in development since September 2011.

Little is known about this fresh take on the story, although it will apparently be set in the modern day and follow the quest to attain the American Dream. David Ayer signed on to write the script in November 2011, which has since been rewritten by Paul Attanasio. Little has been heard about the movie cine them, but Universal has apparently been developing the script with a number of other writers since then.

An insider is quoted as saying,”Universal has been through a couple of drafts and now is very high on the current draft. The first stop is the director. This is before any conversations on talent or timing.”

Both the original 1932 Scarface, starring Paul Muni, and the 1983 Scarface remake starring Al Pacino, are considered classics, so the studio has big shoes to fill for this second remake.

Chris Hemsworth Strikes A Heroic Post In An Ace New Thor: The Dark World Poster

August 1, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

thor-the-dark-world-poster2
I’m not sure whether Natalie Portman will be that impressed by her rather subservient Princess Leia pose on this new poster for Thor: The Dark World, but it’s still a rather cool image. It brings together Portman, Chris Hemsworth, Anthony Hopkins, Tom Hiddleston and more, letting us know that this film will be exploring Asgard far more than Earth.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Marvel’s “Thor: The Dark World” continues the big-screen adventures of Thor, the Mighty Avenger, as he battles to save Earth and all the Nine Realms from a shadowy enemy that predates the universe itself.  In the aftermath of Marvel’s “Thor” and “Marvel’s The Avengers,” Thor fights to restore order across the cosmos…but an ancient race led by the vengeful Malekith returns to plunge the universe back into darkness. Faced with an enemy that even Odin and Asgard cannot withstand, Thor must embark on his most perilous and personal journey yet, one that will reunite him with Jane Foster and force him to sacrifice everything to save us all.’

The film’s due out October 30th,  2013.

Dustin Lance Black Developing Semi-Autobiographical TV Miniseries

August 1, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

dustin-lance-blackDustin Lance Black won an Oscar for Milk and more recently has become almost as famous for his work fighting for gay rights, particularly working for gay marriage in California. It’s also been noted in many places that he was born into a strict Mormon family, which isn’t always the easiest place to grow up gay.

Now THR reports that he’s working on an eight-hour semi-autobiographical scripted miniseries about the gay rights movement for the ABC TV network in the US. It will apparently be ‘based on and told from Black’s background and experiences as a gay-rights activist’. It currently appears that it will also take into account his Mormon background – a religion he fought against, while also acknowledging its good points. Unfortunately though there are no specifics about the story.

As well as Milk, Black also wrote the likes of Pedro and J. Edgar. He made his directorial debut with Virginia and worked on the TV series Big Love.

Black’s project isn’t the only gay-themed miniseries in development at ABC, as in March it was revealed that the network has teamed up with David France to put together a television version of his documentary, How To Survive A Plague. The doc chronicled the struggle against AIDS in the 1980s, and the emergence of militant groups to fight against it, such as militant activists like ACT-UP and TAG. The TV version will follow a group of young people, many of them HIV positive, in that world.
