Benicio Del Toro Joins Guardians of the Galaxy, But Who Will He Play?

June 4, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

benicio-del-toroWith production due to kick off pretty soon, director James Gunn is fast fitting together the cast of Marvel’s Guardians Of The Galaxy. The latest to join is Benicio Del Toro, according to Deadline, who’s set to play an unidentified but pivotal character, who it seems will also be included in future Marvel movies.

The Oscar-winning actor joins a cast that includes Chris Pratt (Peter Quill), Dave Bautista (Drax the Destroyer), Zoe Saldana (Gamora), and Michael Rooker (Yondu), along with Lee Pace, Ophelia Lovibond, Glenn Close and Karen Gillan. Lee Pace is believed to be playing the main villain known as The Collector, although that has not been confirmed at this time.

There’s been immediate speculation about who Del Toro will play, with most of it surrounding the two characters we know will be in the movie but who haven’t been cast yet – Rocket Raccoon and Thanos. Some are saying it will be Rocket Raccoon, thinking the way Del Toro speaks fits well for a talking raccoon from space.

However speculation seem to be leaning towards Thanos, a villainous character who popped up in the end credits of The Avengers, but who we knew would be recast for subsequent appearance. He’s going to be a key but relatively small role in Guardians, but is likely to become more central in Avengers 2 & 3.

Scenes From A Gay Marriage Sequel Announced

June 3, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

matt-riddlehoover
Director Matt Riddlehoover’s Scenes From A Gay Marriage gained a lot of fans when it was released in the US at the end of last year (it certainly didn’t hurt that it was filled with very sexy guys). Now Matt’s been in touch with us to let us know the exciting news that a sequel to the movie is in development.

Riddlehoover and Shane Bartlett of Bring Chase Productions will produce the sequel, tentatively titled Scenes from a Gay Marriage 2. Gay movie luminary Charlie David (Dante’s Cove, Mulligans, Judas Kiss) has joined the cast, with Scenes From A Gay Marriage’s Jared Allman and Thashana McQuiston back to co-star.

Shooting dates have not yet been determined, but it is likely filming will begin before the end of the year. Riddlehoover’s latest, West Hollywood Motel, is to be released later this year through TLAgay.com.

Man Of Steel 13-Minute Behind The Scenes Featurette Flies In

June 3, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

It’s felt like a very long wait for Man Of Steel, but the new take on the Superman legend is set to arrive in just a couple of weeks time on June 14th. If you’re interested in the movie, it’s well worth taking a look at this new 13-minute featurette, with plenty of interviews, footage from the film and looks behind-the-scenes.

Admittedly it does feel like it’s giving us the big sell, but it’s still interesting.

Here’s the synopsis: A young boy learns that he has extraordinary powers and is not of this Earth.  As a young man, he journeys to discover where he came from and what he was sent here to do.  But the hero in him must emerge if he is to save the world from annihilation and become the symbol of hope for all mankind.

Closed Circuit Trailer – Eric Bana and Rebecca Hall go into thriller mode

June 3, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Eric Bana and Rebecca Hall are being watched! At least they are in Closed Circuit, who find their lives getting very difficult after they join the team of defence lawyers for an international terrorist’s trial.

To add a bit of complication, Bana and Hall used to be a couple, which is a fact that could be used by the powerful players who appear to want to use them as pawns in the intrigue.

Julia Stiles, Jim Broadbent, Ciaran Hinds, Roz Ahmed, Kenneth Cranham and Game Of Thrones’ Isaac Hempstead Wright also star. It hits the US on August 28th and comes to the UK on November 1st. [Read more…]

Matt Smith Leaving Doctor Who After This Year’s Christmas Special

June 3, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

doctor-who-matt-smithThere have been rumblings for a few months about Matt Smith possibly leaving Doctor Who behind, especially after his Hollywood career started potentially taking off when Ryan Gosling cast him in his directorial debut, How To Catch A Monster.

Now Smith has confirmed that he’ll be departing the world of Who after the 50th Anniversary special (co-starring David Tenant) and this year’s Christmas special.

He also released a statement, saying “Doctor Who has been the most brilliant experience for me as an actor and a bloke, and that largely is down to the cast, crew and fans of the show,” Smith said in a statement released by the Beeb. “I’m incredibly grateful to all the cast and crew who work tirelessly every day to realise all the elements of the show and deliver Doctor Who to the audience. Many of them have become good friends and I’m incredibly proud of what we have achieved over the last four years.”

Doctor Who boss, Stephen Moffat, commented, “Every day, on every episode, in every set of rushes, Matt Smith surprised me. The way he’d turn a line, or spin on his heels, or make something funny, or out of nowhere make me cry – I just never knew what was coming next. The Doctor can be clown and hero – often at the same time – and Matt rose to both challenges magnificently. And even better than that, given the pressures of this extraordinary show, he is one of the nicest and hardest-working people I have ever had the privilege of knowing. Whatever we threw at him – sometimes literally – his behaviour was always worthy of the Doctor.”

Of course, Doctor Who isn’t ending, so we can now look forward to months of speculation as to who will be the next Doctor. I’ll predict right now you’ll be seeing stories wondering if we’ll get our first black or female take on the character (although we’ll probably get another white guy).

Moffat added, “Somewhere out there right now – all unknowing, just going about their business – is someone who’s about to become the Doctor. A life is going to change, and Doctor Who will be born all over again. After 50 years, that’s still so exciting.”

So get ready for another regeneration.

Now You See Me Beats After Earth At The US Box Office

June 3, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Now-You-See-Me-PosterUS audiences couldn’t get enough of movies over the Memorial Day holiday, but the box office came down to earth with a bump this weekend. While Fast & Furious 6 held onto the number 1 spot, it dropped nearly 65% from its opening to take $34.5 million. The Hangover Part II also dropped 60% in its second weekend, with $15.9 million and a sixth place finish.

The new openers saw one film exceed expectations and another severely disappoint them. The magician-themed Now You See Me placed second with $28 million, way ahead of what many had expected, particularly when cinemas are crowded in big summer action fare. However audiences seemed to like the idea, giving it a far better start than most had thought.

M. Night Shyamalan’s After Earth meanwhile massive underperformed with $27 million. That’s in between the openings of box office bombs Battleship and John Carter, which doesn’t bode well for a movie that cost over $130 million to make. Even the presence of Will Smith, who’s normally a solid draw, could get enough people to part with their cash to put this on the way to being profitable.

There was one more new entry, Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani, which placed ninth with $1.65 million. It’s rare for a Bollywood movie to make the box office top 10 in the US, so this one has done exceptionally well.

Take a look below for the US box office top 10 for the weekend of May 31st-June 2nd.

Rank Title Weekend Gross (millions) Total Gross to date (millions)
1 Fast & Furious 6 $34.5 $170.3
2 Now You See Me $28.0 $28.0
3 After Earth $27.0 $27.0
4 Star Trek Into Darkness $16.4 $181.1
5 Epic $16.4 $65.1
6 The Hangover Part III $15.9 $88.0
7 Iron Man 3 $8.0 $384.7
8 The Great Gatsby $6,2 $128.2
9 Yei Jawaani Hai Deewani $1.6 $1.6
10 Mud $1.2 $16.8

Michael Douglas Says He Knows ‘Gay Actors Who Haven’t Come Out’

June 1, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

BEHIND-THE-CANDELABRA-michael-douglas
Michael Douglas has been busy promoting Behind The Candelabra, where he plays the gay Liberace, a man who not only never came out, but even one a libel action against the Daily Mail for suggesting he likes boys more than girls. Now he’s been talking to Shortlist and has said that while times has changed, things have remained the same for some people.

He notes, “Without naming names, I certainly think there are a couple of people out there who have not come out in the spirit of protecting their careers and livelihoods. It’s probably a little bit more difficult going that way. I think that’s true.”

However he adds, “It’s a much smaller minority of people who think they still have to stay in the closet. It’s quite interesting to see how fast it’s all changed.”

Douglas also notes of Liberace that the fact he was gay didn’t make him any less of a man. “He may be gay, but he’s an Alpha Male on top of his game.”
