The World’s End Trailer – Simon Pegg & Nick Frost return with a sci-fi tinge

May 8, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

A lot of people are very excited for The World’s End, the movie that reunites Nick Frost, Simon Pegg and director Edgar Wright and which completes their trilogy of films following Shaun Of The Dead and Hot Fuzz.

Now the trailer has arrived.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Director Edgar Wright and actors Simon Pegg and Nick Frost reunite for a third film following the successes “Shaun of the Dead” (2004) and “Hot Fuzz” (2007). In “The World’s End,” 20 years after attempting an epic pub crawl, five childhood friends reunite when one of them becomes hellbent on trying the drinking marathon again. They are convinced to stage an encore by Gary King (Simon Pegg), a 40-year-old man trapped at the cigarette end of his teens, who drags his reluctant pals to their hometown and once again attempts to reach the fabled pub – The World’s End. As they attempt to reconcile the past and present, they realise the real struggle is for the future, not just theirs but humankind’s. Reaching The World’s End is the least of their worries.’

It hits UK cinemas on July 19th. [Read more…]

Ender’s Game Teaser – Harrison Ford & Asa Butterfield take on the aliens (but should gay people boycott the film?)

May 8, 2013 By Tim Isaac 3 Comments

I’ve been slightly torn whether I should post the trailer for Ender’s Game. There have already been calls for a boycott of the movie, due to the fact it’s based on a book by noted homophobe Orson Scott Card.

The author has previously said he believes gay sex should be banned (although he’s more recently suggested he no longer wants to see it criminalised), that same sex marriage is wrong, and has linked child abuse and homosexuality. He also sits on board of directors of the National Organization for Marriage, one of the leading anti-equal marriage lobbies, and one that’s been particularly unpleasant in its rhetoric.

Others have suggested we should see the film as a separate entity, and not bring Card’s politics into it. After all, many involved have pledged their support for gay marriage, such as actor Harrison Ford.

While I’m still not sure whether we should be supporting the film or not, I’ve decided I would post the teaser, and you can make up your own mind.

Harrison Ford plays Colonel Hyram Graff, who oversees a military facility where gifted youngsters are trained to prevent an imminent alien attack. Abigail Breslin is playing Valentine Wiggin, the older sister to the titular trainee Ender (Hugo star Asa Butterfield), while Hailee Steinfeld is set to be Ender’s ally, Petra Arkanian. Aramis Knight, Moises Arias, Jimmy Pinchak, Suraj Partha, Conor Carroll, and Khylin Rhambo also star.

The film will hit cinemas on October 25th.

Do you think we should boycott the film? Let us know in the comments below?

Robert Downey Jr. In Talks For Avengers 2 & 3, But Iron Man 4 Is Unlikely

May 8, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

iron-man-3-teaser-poster4Will Robert Downey Jr. return as Iron Man? At the moment that question is up in the air, as while it’s been assumed he’ll be back for Avengers 2, his deal with Marvel has come to an end with Iron Man 2. Now THR reports the actor held a private dinner in Los Angeles a couple of nights to celebrate the success of Iron Man 3, which also marked the start of negotiations for The Avengers 2 and The Avengers 3.

It appears that while the actor is open to returning for The Avengers 2 and 3, as things stand he does not want to return for a stand-alone Iron Man 4 (something that’s been echoed by other actors, such as Gwyneth Paltrow).

In April, Downey Jr. suggested he wanted to “retire” his Tony Stark character, but he didn’t leave a timetable as to when he wanted to do so.

Both the actor and Marvel now have some tough negotiations, as Downey Jr. is arguably the cornerstone of the whole Marvel universe, as the movies he’s appeared in have grossed significantly more than the ones he hasn’t. However while the studio is well known for not paying big fees to its actors, Downey is the exception to that. His current deal is believed to give him around 5% of the box office gross of an Marvel film he’s in, which earned him an estimated $50 million from The Avengers.

Marvel has previously shown that it’s willing to replace actors, such as swapping Terrence Howard for Don Cheadle following the first Iron Man movie and threatening to replace Chris Evans during contract negotiations with him. However replacing Downey Jr. with a new actor would be a massive bet. They could get that actor a lot cheaper, but may well lose out at the box office in the long run.

At the moment it looks like some sort of deal will be worked out for the actor to appear in The Avengers 2, which is due slated for release on May 1, 2015. The Avengers 3 is likely to be released in 2017, but Downey Jr.’s involvement is less certain.

Benjamin Walker Heads For The Heart of the Sea Alongside Chris Hemsworth

Benjamin Walker

For quite a while now, Chris Hemsworth has been attached to the true-life whaling tale In The Heart Of The Sea. Now he’s got some company, as Deadline reports that Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter star Benjamin Walker is in talks to join the movie, beating out the likes of Benedict Cumberbatch, Tom Hiddleston and Henry Cavill, who were also in contention.

Charles Leavitt wrote the script, adapted from Nathanial Philbrick’s non-fiction book of the same name, which is based on the true events that inspired Herman Melville to write Moby Dick. The story revolves around a Nantucket whaling ship that was destroyed by a sperm whale in 1820. Only eight crew members were rescued alive, after being lost at sea for 90 days.

Ron Howard is set to direct, with Warner Bros backing the movie. The hope is to shoot the movie this September in order the fit into Hemsworth’s busy schedule.

James Franco Joins Director Wim Wenders’ Every Thing Will Be Fine

May 8, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

james-francoJames Franco has signed up to star in Wim Wenders’ new movie, Every Thing Will Be Fine, which will start shooting in Montreal from August 15 and continue then in January 2014, according to Variety.

Scripted by Norwegian writer Bjørn Olaf Johannessen, Franco will play Tomas, a writer, who accidentally causes the death of a child. The story follows Tomas through the next twelve years, searching for the footprints of the accident on his life, as well as on the life of Kate, the child’s mother.

Although it doesn’t sound like the sort of movie that’s usually shot in 3D, Wenders became a fan of the format following the $30 million Oscar-nominated success of his ballet movie/documentary Pina, and so will add the extra dimension to Every Thing Will Be Fine. The film will be shot in 3D.

Wenders says, “Every Thing Will Be Fine is a family drama, unravelling over the course of 12 years. A story of guilt and forgiveness, and of accepting things you cannot change anymore. We wrote it with 3D in mind, and I’m convinced that the medium lends itself really well to an intimate story.”

Stop-Motion Pioneer Ray Harryhausen Passes Away Aged 92

May 8, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

ray-harryhausenThe Ray and Diana Harryhausen Foundation have announced that legendary visual effects pioneer and stop-motion animator Ray Harryhausen has passed away, at the age of 92.

The foundation released the following statement, ‘The Harryhausen family regret to announce the death of Ray Harryhausen, Visual Effects pioneer and stop-motion model animator. He was a multi-award winner which includes a special Oscar and BAFTA. Ray’s influence on today’s filmmakers was enormous, with luminaries; Steven Spielberg, James Cameron, Peter Jackson, George Lucas, John Landis and the UK’s own Nick Park have cited Harryhausen as being the man whose work inspired their own creations.

‘Harryhausen’s fascination with animated models began when he first saw Willis H. O’Brien’s creations in King Kong with his boyhood friend, the author Ray Bradbury in 1933, and he made his first foray into filmmaking in 1935 with home-movies that featured his youthful attempts at model animation. Over the period of the next 46 years, he made some of the genres best known movies – Mighty Joe Young (1949), It Came from Beneath the Sea (1955), 20 Million Miles to Earth (1957), Mysterious Island (1961), One Million Years B.C. (1966), The Valley of the Gwangi (1969), three films based on the adventures of Sinbad and Clash of the Titans (1981). He is perhaps best remembered for his extraordinary animation of seven skeletons in Jason and the Argonauts (1963) which took him three months to film.

‘Harryhausen’s genius was in being able to bring his models alive. Whether they were prehistoric dinosaurs or mythological creatures, in Ray’s hands they were no longer puppets but became instead characters in their own right, just as important as the actors they played against and in most cases even more so.

‘Today The Ray & Diana Harryhausen Foundation, a charitable Trust set up by Ray on the 10th April 1986, is devoted to the protection of Ray’s name and body of work as well as archiving, preserving and restoring Ray’s extensive Collection.’

Many filmmakers have paid their respects, such as Steven Spielberg saying, “Ray, your inspiration goes with us forever.” Peter Jackson adds, “The Lord of the Rings is my ‘Ray Harryhausen movie.’ Without his life-long love of his wondrous images and storytelling it would never have been made – not by me at least.” James Cameron meanwhile said, “I think all of us who are practioners in the arts of science fiction and fantasy movies now all feel that we’re standing on the shoulders of a giant. If not for Ray’s contribution to the collective dreamscape, we wouldn’t be who we are.”
