Pacific Rim Uprising Teaser Trailer – What is a Jaeger & what’s John Boyega doing in one?

July 20, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

WIth this year’s Comic Con starting, some of those planning to promote their upcoming big movies in San Diego are trying to get in ahead of the rush, by releasing some of their material publicly a little early. That includes our first look at Pacific Rim: Uprising, which ditches much of the cast of the first film and director Guillermo Del Toro.

They’re being replaced by the likes of John Boyega and Scott Eastwood (although Rinko Kikuchi, Burn Gorham and Charlie Day will be back), with Daredevil and Spartacus producer Steven S. DeKnight making his feature directorial debut with the movie.

Alongside the teaser somes the message, ‘A new generation of Jaeger Pilots will stand tall for all humanity. What is a Jaeger? It’s you, times a thousand. Witness the next evolution of human invention, with the unveiling of the Pan Pacific Defense Corps Mark VI Jaeger Program, and visit GOJAEGER.COM to discover if you have what it takes to join the biggest heroes ever to walk the Earth.’

Take a look below. The film’s due out next February. [Read more…]

Howard Trailer – A look at the life of gay Beauty & The Beast lyricist Howard Ashman

July 20, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

In the annals of Disney history, Howard Ashman is a legend. The out gay lyricist was perhaps the key crative force behind the Disney renaissance of the late 1980s and early 1990s. After a couple of decades in the wilderness, Disney animation suddenly recaptured its magic with the likes of The Little Mermaid, Beauty & The Beast and Aladdin, all of which Ashman worked on.

Previously best known for his work alongside Alan Menken on Little Shop Of Horrors, Ashman’s importance to Disney wasn’t just to do with writing lyrics. He also produced, was heavily involved in the story creation and writing, and even held masterclasses with animators and others at the studio to help teach them how musicals worked and what it was they needed to do.

Tragically, he died of complications from AIDS before Beauty & The Beast hit cinemas (it’s been suggested Ashman saw that film as an AIDS metaphor) in 1991. Now a new documentary, simply titled Howard, is set to explore his life. A trailer has arrived to tie in with Disney’s annual expo, D23, which you can take a look at below. [Read more…]

Jigsaw Trailer – The Saw franchise is returning for another instalment

July 20, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

For a few years annual instalments of the Saw franchise seemed like a licence to print money. However, after Paranormal Activity overtook its Halloween cinema crown, the franchise seemed to have come to an end (with a bit of a whimper) with 2010’s Saw 3D: The Final Chapter.

However, now it’s returning with Jigsaw, with promises that it will the, ‘the Jigsaw killer’s signature brand of twisted scenarios to the next level.’ Matt Passmore, Callum Keith Rennie, Clé Bennett, Hannah Emily Anderson, Laura Vandervoort, Mandela Van Peebles, Paul Braunstein, Brittany Allen, and Josiah Black, with Tobin Bell also returning as the title character.

The first trailer has now arrived, which you can watch below. Jigsaw will be in cinemas on October 27th. [Read more…]

July 20, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Following the success Kingsman: The Secret Service, it’s no surprise we’re getting a sequel. That follow-up will introduce us to the American equivalent of Taron Egerton’s Eggsy, with the likes of Halle Berry, Pedro Pascal, Channing Tatum, and Jeff Bridges joining the throng. And Colin Firth’s back too, with Julianne Moore as the villain.

When their headquarters are destroyed and the world is held hostage, their journey leads them to the discovery of an allied spy organisation in the US called Statesman. These two elite secret organizations band together to defeat a ruthless common enemy, in order to save the world, something that’s becoming a bit of a habit for Eggsy…’

‘On Fire Island’ Gay Film Retrospective Heading To New York In August

July 19, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Over the past 40 years or so, Fire Island, on the edge of Long Island, New York, has become one of the world’s premiere gay retreats. Every summer, thousands of gay men descend on the area for fun and various forms of ‘recreation’.

The area’s gay history is intertwined with film. While it had been a gay enclave since the 1930s, the likes of Wahol’s My Hustler and perhaps more particularly Wakefield Poole’s legendary porn movie, Boys In The Sand, help bring it to wider – and more explicitly sexual – attention. That filmic legacy is being explored next month at Metrograph in New York City, with a series of screenings going under the title, On Fire Island.

The season includes some fascinating movies, including the ones mentioned above. Take a look at some more info from Metrograph below:

Sixty miles southeast of Manhattan, Fire Island acts as a calming tonic for those (mostly queer folks) looking for an escape during New York’s balmiest months. Former residents and visitors included Greta Garbo, W.H. Auden, Calvin Klein, Truman Capote, and Tennessee Williams. On screen, this 30 mile long utopia has served as the setting of a filthy two-act play (Warhol’s My Hustler), the backdrop of a cruel coming of age story (Frank Perry’s Last Summer), an environment for sexual discovery (Wakefield Poole’s Boys in the Sand), the setting for a dour 4th of July party (Stan Lopresto’s Sticks and Stones), and a place of contemplation for a man dying of AIDS (Bill Sherwood’s Parting Glances). Historical shorts will be paired with five features, beginning August 11, with special guests.

Boys in the Sand (Wakefield Poole/1971/90 mins/DCP)
Acclaimed Broadway dancer and director Wakefield Poole created a sensation when he and producer Marvin Shulman opened their gay adult feature, Boys in the Sand, at the 55th Street Playhouse in New York City in 1971. Starring Casey Donovan in three sexual vignettes, the film made Fire Island an international tourist destination and introduced gay sex positivity to straight audiences.

Last Summer (Frank Perry/1969/95 mins/16mm)
An X-rated (in the MPAA sense, not the XXX sense) cult coming-of-age classic, adapted from Evan Hunter’s novel by the eternally-underrated director/writer team of Frank and Eleanor Perry. Starring Barbara Hershey, Bruce Davison, Richard Thomas, and an Oscar-nominated Catherine Burns as a group of Fire Island youths whose impending maturity is marked by shattering emotional and sexual violence in this, the rare teen film untainted by sepia nostalgia. Print courtesy of the National Film and Sound Archive of Australia

My Hustler (Andy Warhol and Chuck Wein/1965/67 mins/16mm)
Warhol’s camp tour de force concerns an idle competition on an empty summer day between tartly monologuing middle-aged queen Ed Weiner, his female Fire Island neighbor, and aging male prostitute, “The Sugar Plum Fairy,” for the attentions of peroxide-blonde “Dial-a-Hustler” hunk Paul America, ogled from deck chairs on the veranda. Bitchy, bitter, and among the flat-out funniest of Warhol productions.

Parting Glances (Bill Sherwood/1986/90 mins/35mm)
One of the first American movies to look the AIDS crisis dead-on, Sherwood’s bittersweet comedy-drama features a young Steve Buscemi in the star-making role of manic rock ‘n’ roller Nick, ex-lover of Richard Ganoung’s Michael, who is simultaneously coping with Nick’s illness and the imminent overseas departure of current boyfriend John Bolger. Setting his scene during one bustling 24-hour period which ends with a Fire Island foray, the sadly short-lived Sherwood faces tragedy with humane humor, creating one of the quintessential queer films of the Reagan debacle.

Sticks and Stones (Stan Lopresto/1970/85 mins/DCP)
A dime-store Rohmer via Boys in the Sand, Stan Lopresto’s chatty, cruel, melancholy film chronicles a 4th of July party on Fire Island. Featuring two lovers, Peter and Buddy, and friends The Lavender Guru, Bobby, and Bike-Boy Fernando, with a recently acquired Prince Albert, Sticks and Stones is a time capsule of now ancient gay norms and a portrait of the Pines long changed.

The Snowman Trailer – Michael Fassbender is tracking a serial killer in the Jo Nesbo adaptation

July 19, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

There have been a couple of good Scandinvian film adaptations of Jo Nesbo’s novels (Headhunters in particular), but now he’s going Hollywood, with a movie that will bring his most famous character, detective Harry Hole, to the screen. Michael Fassbender is taking on the role in The Snowman, which has just released its first trailer.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Michael Fassbender (X-Men series), Rebecca Ferguson (Mission: Impossible—Rogue Nation), Charlotte Gainsbourg (Independence Day: Resurgence) and J.K. Simmons star in The Snowman, a terrifying thriller from director Tomas Alfredson (Let the Right One In, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy), based on Jo Nesbø’s global bestseller.

‘When an elite crime squad’s lead detective (Fassbender) investigates the disappearance of a victim on the first snow of winter, he fears an elusive serial killer may be active again. With the help of a brilliant recruit (Ferguson), the cop must connect decades-old cold cases to the brutal new one if he hopes to outwit this unthinkable evil before the next snowfall.’

The film is due out in the UK in October. Take a look at the trailer and first poster below. [Read more…]

The Shape of Water Trailer – Sally Hawkins meets an underwater creature in Guillermo Del Toro’s latest

July 19, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

If Guillermo Del Toro directs something, you know it’s going to be unique. Although with The Shape Of Water he seems to have been taking in a few inspirations, from the likes of ET and Amelie to the character of Abe Spien in Hellboy. It certainly looks like it could be something special.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘From master story teller, Guillermo del Toro, comes THE SHAPE OF WATER – an other-worldly fairy tale, set against the backdrop of Cold War era America circa 1963. In the hidden high-security government laboratory where she works, lonely Elisa (Sally Hawkins) is trapped in a life of silence and isolation. Elisa’s life is changed forever when she and co-worker Zelda (Octavia Spencer) discover a secret classified experiment. Rounding out the cast are Michael Shannon, Richard Jenkins, Michael Stuhlbarg and Doug Jones.’

The movie should be in cinemas at the end of the year. Take a look at the trailer below. [Read more…]

Sandra Bullock Is Going Post-Apocalyptic Sci-fi In Bird Box

July 19, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Things aren’t going to be going to well for Sandra Bullock, as she’s heading off into a post-apocalyptic future in Bird Box, which has just been snapped up by the streaming service, Netflix. Susanne Bier is set to direct the movie, from a screenplay by Eric Heisserer (The Arrival), according to THR.

The film is ‘Based on a 2014 novel by Josh Malerman, the story is set in the near future, where a mother (Bullock) and her two young children are among a small group of survivors after a mysterious alien force has driven the world’s population to deadly violence. The three must make their way on a terrifying journey – 20 miles in a rowboat – while blindfolded, with nothing to rely on but the mother’s wits and the children’s trained ears.’

Nope, doesn’t sound like Sandra gonna be having much fun!

The current plan is to start shooting the film in August. It should arrive on Netflix sometime next year.

Felicity Jones Will Be Ruth Bader Ginsburg In On the Basis of Sex

July 19, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Following the massive success of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, Felicity Jones is massively in demand. Just a few days ago it was revealed she’s signed up for a movie based on the story of the ballet, Swan Lake. Now she’s heading to the US Supreme Court, or at least to play a woman who’s heading there.

She will play Ruth Bader Ginsburg in the biopic On the Basis of Sex, based on Daniel Stiepleman’s Black List script.

Mimi Leder is set to direct the movie, which focuses of the obstacles Ginsburg faced during her fight for equal rights. As Variety notes, ‘Ginsberg was appointed to the Supreme Court in 1993 by President Clinton and became the second female justice after Sandra Day O’Connor. Focus Features has been developing the project since 2015 with Natalie Portman previously attached to play Ginsburg. Ginsburg is 84 and remains an associate justice who is part of the court’s liberal wing. She is one of three female justices on the current court along with Sonia Sotomayor and Elena Kagan.’

The film is due to start shooting in Montreal in September.
