Snitch Trailer – The Rock goes to prison to save his son

What would you do if a family member went to prison? Most of us would just have to fret and wait for their release, but not The Rock – he’s going into prison himself to help get his son out! This isn’t a prison break, but part of a plan to uncover that his kid was set up by drug dealers. The father is actually working with the DEA, with a deal in place that could see his son freed as long as he can come up with decent evidence.

It’s supposedly based on a true story, although we’d be willing to bet the film version of very, very loosely based on the truth. Susan Sarandon also stars as the hard-assed prosecutor who doesn’t want to let his kid off easy, which results in The Rock agreeing to go behind bars and smoke out the truth.

Ric Roman Waugh (Felon) directs with a release set for early next year.

Dark Skies Trailer – Paranormal Activity’s Jason Blum goes extra-terrestrial

Jason Blum has single-handedly cornered the market in micro-budget, mainstream horror, thanks to his Blumhouse Production Company producing the likes of Paranormal Activity, Insidious and Sinister. One of the movies he’s got incoming is Dark Skies, which takes the family in peril template and gives things an extra-terrestrial spin.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘From the producers of Paranormal Activity, Insidious, and Sinister comes Dark Skies: a supernatural thriller that follows a young family living in the suburbs. As husband and wife Daniel and Lacey Barret witness an escalating series of disturbing events involving their family, their safe and peaceful home quickly unravels. When it becomes clear that the Barret family is being targeted by an unimaginably terrifying and deadly force, Daniel and Lacey take matters in their own hands to solve the mystery of what is after their family.’

The film comes from Scott Stewart, who promised much but delivered far less with Legion and Priest. Keri Russell, Josh Hamilton and Dakota Goyo star. No UK release date has yet been set, but its reaches the US February 2013.

I Give It A Year Trailer – Stephen Merchant turns best man

The first trailer for the British comedy I Give It A Year has arrived, which teams up the likes of Anna Faris, Olivia Colman, Rose Byrne, Simon Baker, Rafe Spall, Minnie Driver and Stephen Merchant, for a movie that looks at the realities, trials and tribulations of the first year of marriage. Merchant gets the plum role in this promo, giving a truly cringe-inducing best man speech, in a way only he can.

Dan Mazer makes his feature-directorial debut, having spent years writing and producing with Sasha Baron Cohen on everything from Ali G to The Dictator. The film is due to hit UK cinemas on 8th February 2013, just in time for Valentine’s Day.

And while we’re hit, why is it nearly every British comedy in the past few years seems to have been about weddings? It’s not even like they’re inherently successful, as everything from The Knot to The Wedding Video have proved. Maybe looking at the first year of marriage can broaden things out a bit.

Lenny Kravitz May Play Marvin Gaye For Director Julien Temple

While he’s made various types of film, Julien Temple is undoubtedly best know for the movies and documentaries he’s made about music, from the Sex Pistols film The Great Rock ‘n’ Roll Swindle and The Fith And The Fury to Glastonbury and Joe Strummer: The Future Is Unwritten. Now he’s hoping to bring the life of Marvin Gaye to the screen, and the Evening Standard says he wants Lenny Kravitz to play him.

Kravitz’s acting career has really taken off in the last couple of years thanks to Precious and The Hunger Games (he’ll be back as Cinna in Catching Fire next year). However this would be Kravitz’s first lead role, with the film looking at the last years of Marvin Gaye’s life from 1981.

The period saw huge success for the singer, with the likes of Sexual Healing hitting the top of the charts, however in 1984 after an argument with his parents, Marvin’s father shot and killed him (with a revolver the singer had given him as a present, no less).

Gaye also had issues with alcohol and drug abuse, but it was his manager helping to get him clean (and sort out his taxes) that led to his early 80s success. However, Marvin was found to have cocaine and angel dust in his system when he died, which many have suggested is the reason why the argument got so out of control.

Apparently Janis Gaye, the singer’s second and last wife, is “very sceptical” about the project, and indeed like Janis Joplin, many have tried to make a biopic over the years but none has happened. We’ll have to wait and see whether Temple has better luck.

James Corden Going To School For Santas

I’ve never quite understood the charms of James Corden, but a lot of people love him and he’s also got a lot of respect as an actor, and he even won a Tony for the Broadway run of One Man, Two Guvnors. Now he’s signed up for a new movie, as Working Title has announced he’ll star in their upcoming School for Santas.

The film follows a down-on-his luck dad who needs to find his inner Father Christmas to win back his kids. The film is set to start shooting in New York and London in 2013.

The script comes from Richard Bean, who also wrote One Man, Two Guvnors, so it’s a bit of a reunion for the duo. Bean has also written such well received plays as The Heretic, Up On Roof and Harvest.

Corden commented, “All my life I’ve wanted to make a big family Christmas movie. To be making one with a company like Working Title Films is a dream come true. Re-teaming with Richard Bean and producer Kris Thykier is like all my Christmas’s have come at once. I can’t wait to start.”

Independence Day 3D Conversion Gets Shelved

After the success of Titanic 3D, many studios having been casting around to see which movie they think might be worth adding an extar dimension too. A few months ago it was revealed 20th Century Fox was planning a 3D version of Roland Emmerich’s sci-fi action film Independence Day, to be released next July 3rd, however now they have pulled the plug on the conversion, at least for the time being.

Roland Emmerich’s apocalyptic sci-fi film starred Will Smith, Bill Pullman, Jeff Goldblum and Randy Quaid. The story followed Captain Steven Hiller as he battled invading space aliens. The film brought in over $800 million worldwide, which would suggest a 3D version would be a success, although many have questioned whether it’s reputation is strong enough that people would want to see it in cinemas again, even with the 3D gimmick.

Fox still has plans to release sequels to the film titled ID Forever – Part 1 and ID Forever – Part 2, and it’s beens suggested the the 3D version of the original may re-emerge once it’s known when those movies might hit cinemas, with a re-release planned in the run up to those movies.

New Jack The Giant Slayer Trailer – Take a look at Bryan Singer’s fairytale fantasy

It’s taken a long time to get Jack The Giant Slayer to the screen, largely due to the special effects and creation of the fairy tale world, which saw the shooting delayed and then the film’s initial June 2012 release date slipping. However Bryan Singer’s film is now incoming, with a March 22nd 2013 release date set and a new, fantastical trailer having popped up online.

The trailer certainly suggests this is going to be an overtly family friendly affair, with liberal doses of comedy and a tone that suggests this won’t have the darkness of some recent fantasy movies. The film is a liberal retelling of the classic Jack & The Beanstalk tale, in which the long-standing peace between men and giants is threatened, as a young farmer (Nicholas Hoult) leads an expedition into the giants’ kingdom in hopes of rescuing a kidnapped princess.

Alongside Hoult, the likes of Ewan McGregor, Stanley Tucci, Bill Nighy and Ian McShane star. To be honest we’re not entirely convinced by this trailer, as it seems a little silly, but we’ll reserve judgement.

New Epic Trailer – Don’t destroy the forest in the new animated movie

I can already feel the hackles of right wing anti-environmentalist nutjobs rising as Epic, which certainly suggest we should be nice to the natural world and not indiscriminately destroy it. However I’d imagine this trailer will excite fans of Honey I Shrunk The Kids.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘The creators of ICE AGE and RIO will reveal a hidden world unlike any other in an all new 3D CG action-adventure comedy. EPIC tells the story of a battle raging all around us between the forces of good, who protect nature, and the forces of evil, who wish to see it destroyed. When a teen age girl finds herself magically transported into this secret universe, she must band together with a rag-tag team of fun and unique characters to save their world…and ours. EPIC is released in cinemas May 2013 from Twentieth Century Fox.’

It’s certainly looks like’s it’s going to be a gorgeous looking movie, with a less overtly comedy vibe than most of Fox’s animation output.

Christopher Meloni Up For Gregg Araki’s White Bird In A Blizzard

A few months ago it was revealed that queer filmmaker Gregg Araki (Mysterious Skin, The Doom Generation) was busy putting together a new movie, White Bird, with Shailene Woodley, Eva Green and Shiloh Fernandez set to star. Now it appears the title has changed slightly to White Bird In A Blizzard, with Deadline reporting that Christopher Meloni and Gabourey Sidibe have been added to the cast.

The movie is about a young woman who loses control of her life when her mother disappears. Woodley will be playing the main part, but it’s not clear how the other actors will play into the story.

Meloni has been having some fun since leaving Law & Order: SVU, going vampiric in True Blood as well as joining the cast of superhero movie, Man Of Steel. Now he’s going a little more arty, with Araki’s movie. It’s not clear when White Bird might shoot.

Richard Dreyfuss & Danny Glover Up For Killing Winston Jones

Richard Dreyfuss and Danny Glover don’t get to make enough movies anymore, so it’s good news they’re teaming up for Killing Winston Jones, and according to Variety they’ll be joined by Danny Masterson and Jon Heder.

The indie dark comedy comes from a script by Justin T. Winter, which focuses on a sixth grade English teacher (Masterson) who is on a quest to get a recently built junior high gymnasium named as a memorial to his father… even though his dad’s not dead. Dreyfuss will pay Masterson’s not-so-late father, while Glover will play a rival who has his own plans for the gymnasium’s name. There’s no mention of what role Heder will have.

Who knew naming a gym could be so fraught?

Cameras start rolling Monday in Savannah, Georgia, with Joel David Moore directing. If that name sounds familiar, it’s because he’s best known as an actor, who’s starred in the likes of Avatar and Dodgeball, as well as having a recurring role in TV’s Bones. He previously helmed Spiral.
