Hotel Transylvania Takes September Record At US Box Office

October 1, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Sony execs will be smiling today, as while September is usually seen as a bad time to release family films in the US, Hotel Transylvania took a strong $43 million, which isn’t just good for an original animated movie, but is actually the biggest weekend gross any movie has ever taken in September. Indeed the month is normally such a slow time the previous record holder was Sweet Home Alabama, which took $35.6 million on its opening in 2002.

Looper also did well thanks to lots of buzz and great reviews, taking $21 million in its first three days. Although that may not seem a lot for a sci-fi film, it’s actually very good for the sort of cerebral sci-fi the movie deals in. Word of mouth should also ensure it has a long run.

The real overperformer was Pitch Perfect, which may have only reached number six on the chart and $5.2 million, but it did so on only 335 screens, giving it the highest per-screen average of the weekend. It bodes well as the Anna Kendrick movie expands onto more screens over the next few weeks.

The final new entry is Won’t Back Down, which rather flopped as despite the Maggie Gyllenhaal and Viola Davis movie opening on 2,550 screens, it took just $2.7 million. That’s the second worst opening ever for a film opening on more than 2,500 screens (indeed many have wondered why it got such a big screen count, considering the minimal marketing push).

Take a look below for the US box office top 10 for the weekend of September 28th-30th.

Rank Title Weekend Gross (millions) Total Gross to date (millions)
1 Hotel Transylvania $43.0 $43.0
2 Looper $21.2 $21.2
3 End Of Watch $8.0 $26.1
4 Trouble With The Curve $7.5 $23.7
5 House At The End Of The Street $7.1 $22.2
6 Pitch Perfect $5.2 $5.2
7 Finding Nemo (3D) $4.0 $36.4
8 Resident Evil: Retribution $3.0 $38.7
9 The Master $2.7 $9.6
10 Won’t Back Down $2.7 $2.7

Did George Lazenby Have To Prove He Wasn’t Gay To Get Bond Role?

September 30, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

While in the old days of Hollywood, the tendency was towards aggressive publicity to hide a gay actor’s sexuality from the audience, George Lazenby has claimed that in the case of James Bond, producers were keen to ensure they didn’t let a gay 007 onto the big screen at all.

The Express reports that in the new documentary Everything Or Nothing, which is about the making of the Bond films, Lazenby says that during the audition process, producers devised a practical test to find out his sexuality. “They sent a girl up to my apartment to make sure I wasn’t gay,” he says. “A little while later they had their answer. I sure as hell wasn’t.”

Indeed playing the spy proved a good way for George to be as heterosexual as possible. “Suddenly I was James Bond and you can imagine what that did to me,” says Lazenby. “I don’t want to brag but I had at least one girl a day… There was a tent on set where the stuntmen used to keep the mattresses they fell on in fight scenes. It was a good place to take a chick if you were in a hurry.”

It seems slightly odd to send a random woman to someone in the hope that they’re so heterosexual they simply can’t help themselves but sleep with them, as it would appear Lazenby would not only have lost out on the role not because he was gay, but also if he didn’t like one night stands. At least it worked for him though.

Well, it worked briefly, as Lazenby only got to make one Bond movie, On Her Majesty’s Secret Service, with most believing the former model to have been a bit of a failure in the role, with Sean Connery being lured back after George’s effort.

The documentary’s director, Stevan Riley, comments on Lazenby’s claim,  “I had no way of confirming if the story was true, I just left it in the edit and waited to see if Eon approved it.” Obviously they let it stand, so perhaps there is some truth in it.

Gay Muslim Movie Banned From Film Festival By Kyrgyzstan Court

September 30, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Last month a gay-themed film was removed from a film festival in Egypt, which made some people wonder whether this was evidence of a new, hard-line approach by the government. Now Kyrgyzstan has done a similar thing, with a court there banning a screening of the documentary, ‘I Am Gay And Muslim’, which was due to be shown last Thursday as part of the Bir Duino (One World) Human Rights film festival in the country’s capital Bishkek.

Kyrgyzstan’s chief cleric, Mufti Rakhmatilla Egemberdiev, said the film presented Islam ‘in a bad form, by using examples of people who have nothing to do with the religion.’ The State Committee on Religious Affairs then decided the film contained signs of incitement of religious hatred and humiliation of Muslims. As a result it was banned amid a new fear over movies that could possibly inflame Islamic opinion following the protests about ‘The Innocence Of Muslims’.

Directed by 32-year-old Dutch Chris Belloni filmmaker, I Am Gay And Muslim was filmed last year, and follows the stories of young gay men in Morocco exploring their sexual and religious identity

Although same-sex relationships were legalised in Kyrgyzstan several years ago, mixing sexuality and religion is still a hot button topic, and it is this that led to the movie being banned. This undoubtedly goes against what Belloni had wanted, as he has said, “I Am Gay and Muslim aims to raise awareness and break the taboo surrounding homosexuality while exposing a broad spectrum of dilemmas that the men struggle with or have overcome in the past.” (Source: GayStarNews)

John Travolta Wins Gay Spa Lawsuit

September 30, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

The last few months have seen numerous rumours and allegations emerge about John Travolta having a bit of a thing for male masseurs. However before individual masseurs came forward to make allegations there was Robert Randolph’s self-published book, You’ll Never Spa In This Town Again and a 2010 Gawker article based on Randolph’s claims.

Travolta wasn’t too impressed with someone going around saying he enjoyed gay sex in spas and bath houses, with Randolph claiming the actor liked to be watched engaging in sex with various men. This causes Travolta’s pitbull lawyer, Marty Singer, to speak out against the claims and send Gawker a cease-and-desist letter, which alleged that Randolph was an unreliable source in part due to allegations of mental issues.

Randolph sued for defamation, saying the allegations  harmed his reputation with false statements and hurt the sales of his book. However now a judge has thrown the lawsuit out, more on a technicality than on a finding of fact. The judge found the letter Singer sent to have gone out ahead of planned legal action and is therefore privileged and can’t be used to sue someone in court. It was also noted that rather than hurting sales of the book, Singer’s lawsuit may well have helped it sell far more copies than it would done on its own, which is probably true.

Indeed it’s one of the odd things about the way the tenacious Singer operates, in that in so vociferously denying any and all claims, he has a tendency to draw more attention to them than they would othersie have had.

Director Marc Forster May Be Imagining Nathan For Disney

September 29, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Marc Forster had a difficult time in the last few years. He was blamed for many of the dramatic failures of Quantum Of Solace, which resulted in it taking a couple of years for him to get his next movie off the ground. However it looked like he was coming back with a vengeance with the Brad Pitt zombie movie World War Z, but that film has now been severely delayed amid reports of huge problems and the need for massive reshoots.

Despite this, he’s looking to the future and TheWrap reports that he’s nearing a deal with Disney to helm Imagining Nathan. It sounds like a decent fit for Forster, taking him back to the themes of Finding Neverland and Stranger Than Fiction. The movie is about a boy called Nathan who retreats into a fantasy world after he’s orphaned at the age of six. 30 years later, his sister tries to help him escape his demons, but Nathan has been diagnosed with a condition which causes him to live in a cartoon-like world.

It’s tough to know quite how that would work, and whether it means a literal cartoon world of just somewhere that outlandish, fantastical things happen. Hopefully we’ll find out more about it soon, as it does sound like it could be interesting.

Judi Dench & Steve Coogan Take On Stephen Frears’ LGBT-themed Philomena

September 29, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Stephen Frears is one of the most eclectic director’s around, having taken on everything from Dangerous Liaisons and the Queen, to the likes of High Fidelity, Tamara Drewe and Accidental Hero. However he first made his name in the movie world with the 1985 gay-themed hit, My Beautiful Launderette. Now he’s lined up a new movie which also has LGBT-interest, Philomena, and Variety reports that Dame Judi Dench and Steve Coogan have signed up to star.

The movie is based on the Martin Sixsmith true story book, The Lost Child of Philomena Lee: A Mother, Her Son and a 50 Year Search. The plot follows Lee, who teams up with Sixsmith to try and find the illegitimate son that she was forced to give up while living in a Catholic home for unmarried mothers in Ireland. Meanshile, it turned out that her son had grown up as Michael Hess, and become a Republican politician and closeted homosexual who had been diagnosed with AIDS. With the knowledge that he was dying, he traveled to Ireland to try and get the nuns at the Catholic home to reveal his mother’s identity.

Coogan has been involved with the project for a long time and even co-wrote the film with Jeff Pope. He will play the Sixsmith, while Dench will be Lee. Coogan commented, “The film is a comic tragedy or a tragic comedy. It’s about two very different people, at different stages of their lives, who help each other and show that there is laughter even in the darkest places.”

Shooting starts next month in London, Northern Ireland and Washington, D.C.

Marc Webb & Andrew Garfield Back For The Amazing Spider-Man 2

September 29, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

While we knew Andrew Garfield would almost definitely be back for The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (as he signed a multi-film contract), there’s been some uncertainty over whether director Marc Webb would be back. However now it’s been confirmed to return for web-slinging follow-up.

Columbia Pictures president Doug Belgrad commented, “We could not be more confident in the direction we are taking this new Spider-Man storyline and we are tremendously excited to be ramping up production again with Marc at the helm and Andrew continuing on as Peter Parker. We can’t wait to share what we have in store for Peter and Spider-Man with audiences worldwide.”

Webb’s involvement was unsure due to the fact that his (500) Days Of Summer contract means he’s obligated to make another movie for Fox Searchlight Pictures. They allowed him to go off and make Spider-man, but it wasn’t certain if a new deal could be worked out to let him direct the sequel.

Shooting on The Amazing Spider-man 2 is expected to begin production in early 2013. Emma Stone is in talks to return as Gwen Stacy, but she’s not confirmed as yet. (Sourc: Variety)
