New Line Picks Up The Raven Boys

September 17, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Every studio wants to have the new Twilight or Hunger Games, which is good news for authors of young adult movies, are virtually every one will get at least a little attention from Hollywood. Now New Line has stakes a claim for a new franchise, acquiring the rights to Maggie Stiefvater’s novel The Raven Boys, according to Variety.

The novel is the first in a four-book series known as the ‘Raven Cycle’, which is about a 16-year-old girl named Blue Sargent. Her parents are powerful psychics, although this trait was not passed down to her. She is told that she possesses a deadly gift, where her true love will die simply by kissing her. Although the girl has steered clear of the opposite sex, she meets teenage brothers The Raven Boys at the pizza place where she works, which leads into a contentious love triangle.

Akiva Goldsman has signed on to produce, and New Line is currently seeking a screenwriter to adapt the material. The author also has an adaptation of her book The Scorpio Races in development at Warner Bros. with Seth Grahame-Smith and David Katzenberg producing.

Resident Evil 5 Tops The US Box Office

September 17, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

It was yet another slow weekend at the US box office, allowing Resident Evil Retribution to top the chart with a decent but not particularly amazing $21 million. That’s lower than the previous three films, although slightly higher than the original (but if inflation and 3D premiums are taken into account, it sold fewer tickets). However as it grossed around $60 million in international territories, it’s still going to be judged a success and makes Resident Evil 6 more likely.

The only other new entry in the top 10 (or technically re-entry) was the 3D re-issue of Finding Nemo, which took $17 million to place second on the chart. It’s less than what The Lion King took when it got an extra dimension, but about on par with Beauty & The Beast.

However it was outside the top 10 that the most interesting news happened. The Master only made it to number 18 on the list, but its $730,000 in only five cinemas is the highest per average screen take ever for a live action movie with $146,000 per screen (topping Moonrise Kingdom’s $130,000 earlier this year). It bodes very well for its expansion onto 600 screens this Friday.

Take a look below for the US box office top 10, for the weekend of September 14th-16th 2012.

Rank Title Weekend Gross (millions) Total Gross to date (millions)
1 Resident Evil: Retribution $21.1 $21.1
2 Finding Nemo (3D) $17.5 $17.5
3 The Possession $5.8 $41.1
4 Lawless $4.2 $30.1
5 Paranorman $3.0 $49.3
6 The Expendables 2 $3.0 $80.2
7 The Words $2.8 $9.1
8 The Bourne Legacy $2.8 $107.8
9 The Odd Life Of Timothy Green $2.5 $46.2
10 The Campaign $2.4 $82.8

Daniel Radcliffe To Host Online Trevor Project Chat This Sunday

September 14, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Daniel Radcliffe has been a strong supporter of The Trevor Project for several years now, speaking out for the organisation, helping promote their mission and appearing in PSAs (one of which you can see below). Now Harry Potter is going to host a live online chat this Sunday (September 16th, 2012) to talk about The Trevor Project’s Talk To Me campaign. The Trevor Project is the leading US organisation providing crisis intervention and suicide prevention services to lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and questioning youth.

The chat is being timed to coincide with National Suicide Prevention Month, with Radcliffe helping host the chat that will look at ways of trying to prevent suicide and make life better for LGBT people, particularly young people, in crisis. The Talk To Me campaign according to its website, ‘is The Trevor Project’s campaign for conversation. With 3 simple words – talk to me – you let a friend know that you CARE about them and are willing to listen without judgment. During National Suicide Prevention Month in September we encourage you to take the Talk to Me pledge and let the ones you love know you’re always available to talk.’

It’s a great idea, and Daniel will be helping out. You can even ask him a question via the Talk To Me website, ahead of the chat at 2.00pm EST (7.00pm BST) on Sunday, 16th September, 2012.

Lincoln Trailer – Daniel Day Lewis gets Presidential in Spielberg’s film

September 14, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

It’s taken a long time to get a trailer for Spielberg’s Lincoln, but now it’s here, showing the director in full on soft-tint epic historical mode. It all looks very worthy and Oscar-bait, but we’ll have to wait and see if Spielberg can get over his tendency to get slightly boring when he goes back beyond the Second World War. The movie concentrates on the last years of Lincoln’s life, when with the Civil War raging, many believed the only way to end conflict and save the union was to rescind the Emancipation Proclamation (which freed slaves and was relatively flimsy legally, as it was a Presidential order that had never been backed by the Congress, Senate or courts). However Abraham pressed forward trying to find support for a Constitutional Amendment, which would ensure black people could not be enslaved in the US ever again.

Texas Chainsaw 3D Trailer – Leatherface is back

September 14, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

What started as an ultra-cheap 1974 splatter-fest from Tobe Hooper continues to mine as much money as possible from punters with Leatherface returning with an extra dimension in Texas Chainsaw 3D. The idea with this one is to go back and tell us what happened just after the very first movie (the new film apparently ignores all the other sequels). It’s believed Leatherface and his family have disappeared, but then a young woman discovers she’s inherited a remote Texan house. Suffice to say when she and her friends head there, it doesn’t turn out too well. The film hits cinemas early next year.

Stand Up Guys Trailer – Al Pacino teams up with Christopher Walken

September 14, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

In Stand Up Guys, Val (Al Pacino) is released from prison after serving 28 years for refusing to give up one of his close criminal associates. His best friend Doc (Christopher Walken) is there to pick him up, and the two soon re-team with another old pal, Hirsch. Their bond is as strong as ever, and the three reflect on freedom lost and gained, loyalties ebbed and flowed, and days of glory gone by. And despite their age, their capacity for mayhem is still very much alive and well – bullets fly as they make a hilariously valiant effort to compensate for the decades of crime, drugs and sex they’ve missed. But one of the friends is keeping a dangerous secret – he’s been put in an impossible quandary by a former mob boss, and his time to find an acceptable alternative is running out. As the sun rises on the guys’ legendary reunion, their position becomes more and more desperate and they finally confront their past once and for all.

Isabelle Fuhrman Replaces Chloe Moretz In The Wilderness Of James

September 14, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

A couple of weeks ago, it appeared Let Me In stars Kodi Smit-McPhee and Chloe Moretz would be reteaming for The Wilderness Of James, but Moretz’s busy schedule has made that impossible. As a result she’s been replaced by The Hunger Games’ Clove, Isabelle Fuhrman, according to Deadline.

Written by first-time filmmaker Michael Johnson, The Wilderness Of James is a coming-of-age drama that sees Kodi Smit-McPhee playing a boy coming to grips with the absence of his father. Fuhrman will take on the female lead Val. As when Moretz was in contention for the role, there are no other details about her character.

The movie is set to shoot next month in Portland, Oregon.

Godzilla Reboot Set For Release May 2014

September 14, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Legendary Pictures has been slowly working on a reboot of Godzilla, and for the last couple of Comic Cons have been teasing the film. However it’s always seemed to be quite a way off, but now things are moving forward, as Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures have set a May 16th, 2014 release date for the film, and confirmed that the movie will be in 3D.

Gareth Edwards (Monsters) is set to direct from a script by David Callaham (The Expendables), David S. Goyer (Christopher Nolan’s Batman films) and Max Borenstein (The Seventh Son). Toho Studios, which produced the original Japanese movies, is overseeing the efforts of Legendary and WB in order to try and ensure they don’t repeat the mistakes of Roland Emmerich’s version.

Deadline says that the plan is to “return the character to its epic roots with a gritty, realistic actioner.” Quite what we’ll end up with isn’t clear yet, although hopefully they’ll release the test footage shown at Comic Con, so we can get an idea.

Universal Set For More Ted And Bourne

September 14, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Universal Pictures has confirmed they are aiming to make sequels from two of its biggest summer hits, the raunchy R-rated comedy Ted and the action-thriller spin-off The Bourne Legacy. NBC Universal CEO Steve Burke spoke at the 2012 Media, Communications & Technology conference in Los Angeles earlier today, where he revealed that the film division needs, “franchises and animation” to achieve a level of stability.

That’s not exactly news, as Universal has been having a rocky ride, with numerous attempts to launch franchises (such as The Wolfman) flopping, which has resulted in numerous changes in leadership at the studio. They already have a popular franchise in The Fast and the Furious, with the latest installment, The Fast and the Furious 6, currently in production and set for release next summer.

The executive also revealed that fans should expect a sequel to The Bourne Legacy, which has taken in over $180 million worldwide in just over a month. That’s not a massive hit, particularly compared to earlier Bourne movies, but it should have long legs on home video, and there are already rumours that Universal is trying to woo Matt Damon back to the franchise.

Ted, directed by Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane, was the biggest surprise hit this summer, taking in a whopping $394 million worldwide. Steve Burke revealed that they want to get a sequel going, “as soon as we can.” Back in July, Seth MacFarlane said he would be open to making a sequel, although it isn’t known if he is working on the screenplay yet.

As for the animation side of the studio, they eventually want to release two animated movies per year, as opposed to their current model of one film every 18 months. (Source: THR)

New Skyfall US Poster Released

September 14, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

It’s not long now until Skyfall hits UK cinemas on October 26th (and November 9th in America), and in preparation a new US poster for the movie has been released, which suggests Bond will be spending time on his back in the movie (but then, when doesn’t he?).

It’s slick and rather cool, and set us up for the film, where Bond has to come to M’s aid, after her past comes back to haunt her.
