300 Prequel Is No Longer Battle Of Artemisia

September 13, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Ever since the first movie hit box office gold, Warner Bros. has been working on a follow-up, which has been very slowly making its way to the screen. Now the studio has announced that the prequel is changing its name. Up until now it’s been known as 300: Battle of Artemisia, but has now been re-titled 300: Rise of an Empire.

Sullivan Stapleton (Animal Kingdom) is set to star as Themistocles, who leads a group of Spartan warriors to take on the mighty Xerxes (Rodrigo Santoro). Eva Green plays Artemisia, the goddess who persuades Xerxes to do battle with these Greek soldiers. Jamie Blackley and Eva Green also star.

Noam Murro is directing from a script by 300 writers Kurt Johnstad and Zack Snyder, with production already under way. This is not the first time this project has underwent a title change. Initially known as Xerxes, last June is became 300: Battle of Artemisia and has now changed again. 300: Rise of an Empire should hit cinemas August 2nd, 2013. (Source: BoxOfficeMojo)

Christian Slater Joins Lars Von Trier’s Nymphomaniac

September 13, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Christian Slater is the latest actor to sign onto the surprisingly high profile cast of director Lars von Trier’s erotic drama The Nymphomaniac, just as shooting gets underway in Cologne, Germany, according to Variety.

The story, told through eight different chapters, is about Joe (Charlotte Gainsbourg) and her life as a self-diagnosed nymphomaniac. The plot follows her from birth until the age of 50. Christian Slater will portray Joe’s father. Stellan Skarsgård also stars as Seligman, a man who Joe tells her sexual adventures to after he finds her beaten in an alley. The cast also includes Shia LaBeouf, Jamie Bell, and Connie Nielsen.

Lars von Trier is directing from his own original screenplay and has said the movie will be shot in two versions, one featuring hardcore sex, while the other will be softer.

Kate Winslet’s First Titanic Screen Test – But who is playing Jack?

September 12, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

This is rather intriguing, not just to see Kate Winslet’s first screen test for the role of Rose in Titanic, but also to see who’s playing opposite her, suggesting Leo DiCaprio wasn’t the only possibility to play Jack. Winslet sounds more American than she does in the final movie and it appears to be a slightly earlier version of the script, but her Jack here is Jeremy Sisto, who at the time was coming off his success in Clueless. How different things might have been for him if he’d played Jack in the final film. Titanic is now out on Blu-ray in both 2D and 3D.

Smashed Trailer – Can Mary Elizabeth Winstead & Aaron Paul go sober?

September 12, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Mary Elizabeth Winstead & Aaron Paul star in Smashed as a married couple whose bond is built on a mutual love of alcohol gets their relationship put to the test when the wife decides to get sober and he attempts to follow suit. It’s a plot that many will be able to relate to, especially those who’ve found that when they stopped smoking wacky baccy with their partner, they don’t seem as delightful anymore. The movie played Sundance in January, but it’s only now we get the trailer. No UK date is currently set for the film, but it hits US cinemas in October.

Everybody Has A Plan Trailer – Viggo Mortensen pulls double duty as twins

September 12, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Viggo Mortensen has long proved he’s more interested in an acting challenge than mainstream success, he’s certainly got that with Everybody Has A Plan, as he plays twins and has to speak Spanish. The movie tells the story of Agustín (Mortensen), a man desperate to abandon what for him has become, after years of living in Buenos Aires, a very frustrating existence. After the death of his twin brother, Pedro, Agustín decides to start a new life, adopting the identity of his brother and returning to the mysterious region of the Delta, in the Tigre, where they lived when they were boys. However, shortly after his return, Agustín finds himself unwillingly involved in the dangerous criminal world that was a part of his brother’s life.

Secret Circle’s Britt Robertson Up For Starbuck

September 12, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

While Britt Robertson might has hoped she’d shooting the second season of The Secret Circle by now, her diary suddenly freed up when the series she played the central role in got cancelled. Now she’s found something to do as she has joined the cast of DreamWorks’s Starbuck. She will play the daughter of Vince Vaughn’s character in this comedy, one of his hundreds of kids.

The story, based on the French-Canadian movie Starbuck, is about a man (Vaughn) who comes to realize that he has fathered 533 children through his sperm donations over the years. When several of his kids come forward, he must come to grips on whether or not to reveal his identity. Chris Pratt also stars as the man’s attorney, and Cobie Smulders will play his pregnant girlfriend. The title comes from the anonymous nickname the man used to make his deposits.

Original Starbuck director Ken Scott is back at the helm for this remake, working from his own script. Shooting is scheduled to start later this year. (Source: Deadline)

Sam Rockwell & Maria Tomei Ask Why Now

September 12, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

It always good when Sam Rockwell signs up for a movie, and now he’s got a new one, with Screen Daily reporting that he, Brian Geraghty and Marisa Tomei are set to star in Why Now, which will be helmed by actors turned writer/directors Michael Godere and Ivan Martin.

Godere and Martin have also included roles for themselves in the flick, although there aren’t many details on the plot. Interestingly, it seems Rockwell, Geraghty and Tomei must have been very intrigued by the script, as they’re certainly not getting a big payday. The movie has a budget of only $500,000, so they the directors have certainly scared up a good cast for a movie with very little cash to splash.

The plan is to shoot next month in upstate New York.

Will Channing Tatum Direct Magic Mike 2?

September 12, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Shortly after Magic Mike became a suprise success at the box office, Channing Tatum began talking about a sequel, and writer Reid Carolin has been charged with coming up with the script, once more collaborating with Tatum on the story. Plus, there’s a Broadway version of the film in the works.

Now we’ve had an update and it appears Tatum is thinking of making Magic Mike 2 his directorial debut. He told the German site Filmstarts (via The Film Stage), that as Steven Soderbergh is supposedly retiring, Magic Mike 2 could be helmed by Soderbergh’s longtime assistant director Gregory Jacobs (Wind Chill, Criminal), but then suggested that he and Carolin might just end up helming the movie themselves. Who knows how serious he is, but it seems a Tatum directed sequel is possible.

However the follow-up is a way off at the moment, with the Broadway adaptation taking priority at the moment for Tatum and Carolin. They do have sequel ideas though, with the actor telling Allocine, “We have a story, and it is really ridiculous and fun. It’s a road movie sort of thing, where a bunch of strippers get back together. It’s more of a broad comedy. I don’t know whether it will happen or not.”

Joan Allen Set To Have A Good Marriage, With Stephen King Scripting

September 12, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Joan Allen has signed on to star in the Stephen King adaptation A Good Marriage for director Peter Askin (Trumbo). Unusually Stephen King wrote the screenplay adaptation himself, based on his 2010 novella.

The story is about a woman named Darcy (Allen), whose life is rocked when she discovers the ‘sinister and gruesome double life’ her husband has been living for 25 years. She must then decide whether or not to keep maintaining the relationship with her shady spouse.

It’s not King’s first screenplay, as he also wrote the scripts for the likes of 1989’s Pet Sematary and 1985’s Cat’s Eye, but he’s generally steered clear of going beyond being a producer on some projects (partly due to the abject failure of his single directorial out, Maximum Overdrive). The independent production with start shooting next month in New York. (Source: THR)

Joss Whedon Talks Avengers 2 – ‘The creation of the team is not the happy ending’

September 12, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Director Joss Whedon is currently prepping for the monstrous task of following up this summer’s blockbuster Marvel’s Avengers Assemble with The Avengers 2 in 2015 (as well as overseeing the rest of Marvel’s plans for Phase 2 of its superhero world).

Speaking to Vancouver.24, the filmmaker has revealed he plans to take these superheroes to the edge, testing their cohesive relationships. “The creation of the team is not the happy ending,” he says. “It is the beginning of something that is complex and difficult, and now I get to dig a little deeper. And maybe, while I’m digging, just twist that knife. And that’s exciting for me.”

The filmmaker will also be consulting and overseeing the likes of Iron Man 3, Thor: The Dark World, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, and Guardians of the Galaxy. However, he doesn’t plan on ruling with an iron fist, saying “Very talented people are writing and directing these movies, and what I don’t want to be is the guy they dread, who’s going to come in and say ‘Oh, well I have the power to say change this.’ I’m not that.”

The Avengers 2 comes to theaters May 1st, 2015.
