David O’Russell May Take On American Sniper With Bradley Cooper

September 11, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

It’s all a bit speculative at the moment, but David O. Russell and Bradley Cooper might be spending a lot of time together in the next couple of years, as they’ve just completed The Silver Linings Playbook together, and will be moving on to a currently untitled project (formerly known as American Bullshit), which is slated to shoot this February and will also star Amy Adams and Jeremy Renner.

However that’s not the end of it, as THR spoke to O. Russell in Toronto, who said, “We’ve also discussed American Sniper, a property Bradley has acquired. I’m really excited to work with him again. He is like an athlete who wants to burst out of the blocks and wants to stretch in all these new ways.”

Cooper recently signed up to develop Sniper, based on the autobiography of Navy SEAL Chris Kyle. Jason Dean Hall will write the script about Kyle, who holds the records for most sniper kills by an American. The book has been praised for its frankness in telling a first-person account of a warrior who shoots from far and close distances. It also includes portions written by Kyle’s wife, balancing out the story to show both the home perspective as well as that of a soldier who’s out to kill.

At the moment, there’s no guarante all this would happen, as O. Russell is notorious from dropping in and out of projects. After Thr Fighter is looked like Mark Wahlberg would be his muse, with the actor working on various projects together, which all fell by the wayside, eventually leading to a rumoured estrangement between the pair.

Guardians of the Galaxy Is ‘Twisted’ Says Joss Whedon

September 11, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Last month, it was revealed that James Gunn was Marvel Studios’ top choice to direct Guardians of the Galaxy, a big-budget ensemble that brings together characters such as Rocket Raccoon and Drax the Destroyer.

The filmmaker has since been confirmed to write and direct the upcoming project. Marvel’s The Avengers director Joss Whedon knows a thing or two about superhero ensembles, and he is also serving as a creative adviser on this project. He recently spoke to MTV about James Gunn’s take on the material, saying, “He has a very twisted take on it, but it all comes from a real love for the material. It’s going to be hard for the humans to keep up. I know he’s going to come from left field and I’m going to go, ‘What?’ And then, ‘Of course, why didn’t I think of that?’ And then I’m going to beat him!”

Joss Whedon admitted he initially had some doubts about this project, but that initial trepidation was put to rest once James Gunn signed on. “James is what makes me think it will work,” he says. “I myself was sort of like, ‘Well, I liked Rocket Raccoon as a kid, but I’m not sure how that plays [to a wider audience].’ And then they said, ‘Well, we’re thinking about using James Gunn.’ And I said, ‘Oh, then no, you’re fine.’ He is so off the wall, and so crazy, but so smart, such a craftsman and he builds from his heart. He loves the raccoon. Needs the raccoon. This is the guy who wrote The Specials. People don’t understand how influential that movie was about heroes, about taking heroes and making them mundane. And [he directed] Super.”

Joss Whedon also said that James Gunn has ‘barely started’ writing the screenplay, but he has plenty of time until the August 1, 2014 release date.

Zac Efron Says He’s ‘Always Felt Embraced By The Gay Community’

September 10, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Zac Efron has given his first interview to a gay publication, with The Advocate getting that scoop ahead of the release of the High School Musical’s dancing-in-his-underpants appearance in Lee Daniel’s The Paperboy.

The actor reveals himself to be a pretty laid back character, saying about his gay fans, “I’ve always felt embraced by the gay community, and I feel incredibly grateful and honored. This is actually a very special interview for me. I’m extremely aware of the support I’ve gotten from you guys over the years, and it’s amazing that it’s taken this long to sit down and actually discuss it, but please know that it hasn’t gone unappreciated. I’m so excited to be talking to you.”

Asked when he realised he had a lot of gays fans, he says, “I really felt that support after High School Musical. I think the gay audience related to my character Troy, because it really was a story of embracing who you are, no matter how different you might be, and not being afraid to show it. That’s a universal theme for everyone, but it specifically resonated with the gay community, and I felt very proud of that.”

As for whether he’d ever play gay, he adds, “I’d never take a role just for the sake of playing gay, but I’m always looking for a role that’s challenging, different, and entails some risk, so there’s no doubt in my mind that one of those characters will be gay at some point in the future. It’s always interesting to delve into unexplored territory, and that would be a new avenue for me. I definitely wouldn’t be afraid.”

He’s also all for marriage equality, saying, “It’s an issue that affects so many people in my life — a lot of my close friends and some of the most influential people around me. I just want them all to be happy. It would make me so happy to see them able to live their lives and do what they want to do.”

Zac was also happy to be ‘eroticised’ by director Lee Daniels, who’s spoken about how he brings his gay sensibility to his film. “I’ve always just embraced Lee as a brilliant artist,” Efron says, “So I followed him blindly, trustingly, and wholeheartedly. He’s searching for beauty and truth in every scene, so I believed in him and always felt safe.

As for the scene involving him dancing in his underwear which caused a lot of swooning in the trailer for The Paperboy, he teases, “Initially, I wondered if my character would even wear underwear at all. But that would’ve been a very different movie.”

No UK release date is currently set for The Paperboy but you can watch the trailer, including Efron’s undies dance by clicking here.

Peccadillo Gets Two Movies Into The London Film Festival

September 10, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Until fairly recently, one of the main reasons to have LGBT film festivals was because of the difficulty getting decent representation for gay movies in mainstream fests. However last year LGBT/indie specialist distributor Peccadillo had three of their movies included in the London Film Festival programme (She Monkeys, Weekend and Beauty) and this year they’ve got two more.

The 56th BFI London Film Festival, which runs October 10th-21st, will include screenings of the acclaimed Keen The Lights On from director Ira Sachs (Forty Shades of Blue), as well as Our Children, starring A Prophet’s Tahar Rahim and Niels Arestrup. It also features also a blistering performance from Emilie Dequenne (Rosetta), who took home the Un Certain Regard Best Actress prize at this year’s Cannes Film Festival.

In Keep The Lights On, it’s 1997 and New York City is in a state of intense flux when documentary filmmaker Erik Rothman (Thure Lindhardt) first meets Paul Lucy (Zachary Booth), a handsome but closeted lawyer in the publishing field. What begins as a highly charged first encounter soon becomes something much more, and a relationship quickly develops. As the two men start building a home and life together, each continues to privately battle their own compulsions and addictions. The movie has already won the Teddy Award (for Best LGBT Film) at the Berlin Film Festival and a couple of gongs at LA’s Outfest. You can watch a trailer here, ahead of its UK cinema release on November 2nd.

Here’s the synopsis for the less explictily gay Our Children, ‘Young, effervescent and full of life, Murielle (Emilie Dequenne, Rosetta) has a promising future ahead of her when she meets and falls head over heels for the handsome Mounir (Tahar Rahim, A Prophet). A wedding soon follows, and the happy couple quickly set about preparing to make a family. However, with family comes ties, and none come so tight as that between Mounir and the mysterious Doctor Pinget (Niels Arestrup, A Prophet, Sarah’s Key), his adoptive father. As Murielle continues to bring new life into the family, in the form of four beautiful young girls, frictions between Mounir and Doctor Pinget reach boiling point. Helpless to extract her husband and children from the wealthy nest that Doctor Pinget has provided for them, Murielle is drawn deeper into an unhealthy three-way relationship. With Doctor Pinget acting as Murielle’s personal pharmacy, and Mounir taking extended trips abroad to Morocco, Murielle becomes increasingly alone and unstable. There is only one way out of this nightmare, and for Murielle, all sense of reasoning must be abandoned.’ It’ll hit UK cinemas March 2013.

Brad Pitt Says Gay Marriage Is ‘Inevitable’

September 10, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

A couple of months ago there was a bit of a furore over a letter Brad Pitt’s mom sent to her local newspaper, where she said Barack Obama’s support for marriage equality was one good reason not to vote for him.

However Brad’s support for both Obama and gay marriage is undimmed, telling The Telegraph at a recent screening of his forthcoming film Killing Them Softly, that ‘Gay marriage is inevitable. The next generation, they get it. It is just a matter of time before it becomes a reality.’ He adds, ‘I am an Obama supporter and I’m backing his election campaign.’

While that that means he and his mom and going to have to agree to disagree, Brad has long shown his support for equality, releasing messages in support of New York enacting equal marriage legislation, starring in a reading of Dustin Lance’s Black play 8 and vowing not to marry Angelina Jolie until everyone can wed (although he’s since said he might not be able to keep to that one).

The Weight Takes LGBT Prize At The Venice Film Festival

September 10, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

While we don’t normally think of South Korea producing gay-themed films, in recent years a few have emerged from the country, revealing a country still coming to terms with having openly LGBT people. Now one movie from the nation has picked up the 6th Queer Lion Award at the Venice Film Festival, according to THR.

The Weight, from director Jeon Kyu-hwan, is a drama about a young hunchback man living a solitary life working in a morgue, who fantasises about the lives of the corpses he meets, and the clashes between his adoptive mother and transgender stepbrother.

Other films in competition include Brian De Palma’s Passion; Den Skaldede Frisor (All You Need is Love) from Susanne Bier; Xan Cassavetes’ Kiss of the Damned; Acciaio (Steel) from Stefano Mordini; Pascal Bonitzer’s Cherchez Hortense (Looking for Hortense); and 6 Sull’Autobus (6 On the Bus), which features six parallel stories from different Italian directors: Simone Dante Antonelli, Giacomo Bisordi, Rita de Donato, Irene di Lelio, Antonio Ligas, and Emiliano Russo.

The award is open to the best film in the official selection, either in or out-of-competition, or in any of the festival’s three main sidebars, and must ‘accurately portray lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender characters.’

The Possession Stays Top Of The US Box Office On Worst Weekend For Years

September 10, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

There’ll be some glum faced in Hollywood this week, with news that on the international market, box office is down about 20% compared to where it was this time last year (that’s more than a billion dollars less), and the US has seen its worse weekend for years. It’s the first time since 2008 that a movie has managed to hit the top spot with less than $10 million, with some sources suggesting that overall it’s the worst three-day total since 2001.

The Possession stayed top of the chart with just $9.5 million. The movie is doing okay for a mid-range horror flick, but on a normal weekend it would be at fourth or fifth place on the chart, rather than top.

Things weren’t helped by the new openers tanking badly, with the Bradley Cooper and Rober De Niro drama/thriller The Words taking just five million – which on many weekends wouln’t even put it in the top 10, but actually made it to number three.

The Cold Light Of Day truly flopped, taking just $1.8 million to place 13th. To be honest, that’s probably oddly good news for its star, Henry Cavill, as it means most people will have forgotten about its existence by the time Man Of Steel flies into cinemas next year.

Although early September is always a slack time as Hollywood transitions from their summer to autumn releases, but the weakness at the box office is pretty dreadful at the moment. Take a look below for the US box office top 10 for the weekend September 7th-9th.

Rank Title Weekend Gross (millions) Total Gross to date (millions)
1 The Possession $9.5 $33.3
2 Lawless $6.0 $23.5
3 The Words $5.0 $5.0
4 The Expendables 2 $4.7 $75.4
5 The Bourne Legacy $4.0 $103.7
6 Paranorman $3.8 $45.0
7 The Odd Life Of Timothy Green $3.6 $43.0
8 The Campaign $3.5 $79.4
9 The Dark Knight Rises $3.2 $437.8
10 2016 Obama’s America $3.0 $26.0

Doug Liman Takes On The Tourist

September 10, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

I would imagine that with the Depp and Jolie flick The Tourist not exactly setting the box office alight, the title of this movie will change before it hits cinemas, but as things stand, Mr & Mrs Smith and Bourne Identity helmer Doug Liman has signed up to produce and possibly direct a spy thriller currently called The Tourist.

Deadline says Sony has optioned Olen Steinhauer’s Milo Weaver trilogy, which is about a retired CIA agent who’s living a quiet life with a wife and kid in a brownstone in Brooklyn – that is until one of his old colleagues is pulled into a scandal that forces Weaver back into the spy game. Sony is currently planning to translate the first book of the series, The Tourist, into a pulse-pounding thriller, and so has brought Liman on board to produce and direct from a script adapted by Matt Corman and Chris Ord, the writers behind the spy drama Covert Affairs.

The Tourist was previously optioned by George Clooney’s production company, but they are no longer involved.

Patrick Wilson & Alec Baldwin Get Caught Stealing

September 10, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Patrick Wilson went to TV last year with A Gifted Man, but now that show has been cancelled, he’s heading back to the movies with Caught Stealing, according to THR, and Alec Baldwin will star in the film too.

Wilson will play Thompson, a character descibed as being “once a hotshot high school baseball prospect, turned unlucky alcoholic, going-nowhere bartender.” While living an exceedingly dull he suddenly finds himself caught up in something huge when he learns that the cat that he is taking care of for his neighbour has a secret hidden in its cage. Hank suddenly finds himself in possession of a very special key that many are looking for, including “a sadistic cop (Baldwin), Russian mobsters, a Samoan hit man, and a pair of psycho brothers who dress in leather gear.”

Producer Kirk D’Amico says, “Caught Stealing is, first and foremost, a great script. It is a wrong-man plot worthy of Hitchcock, and a brilliant adaption of the first book of the Henry Thompson trilogy. I look forward to seeing the story come to life on screen.”

It isn’t clear when it might shoot.

Has Star Trek 2 Found A Title?

September 10, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

The main way for fans to find out early what a movie is going to be called is to keep an eye on domain name registrations. A studio has to buy the domains before they announce the title (to stop the inevitable cyber-squatters), but there’s no way to keep those registrations completely secret.

Now fans think they may have found the title of Star Trek 2, as MarkMonitor, a popular domain registry – the same registry in fact that secured the title for Paramount Pictures’ G.I. Joe Retaliation – has confirmed that both www.startrekintodarkness.com and www.startrekintodarknessmovie have been registered as Internet website domains.

This, of course, has led to the speculation that the new title of Star Trek 2 is now Star Trek Into Darkness. While most sites have been reporting it without a colon, there’s no real reason to suppose it won’t be Star Trek: Into Darkness, which would certainly be less clunky.

At this time, the title has been neither confirmed nor denied by the studio, but with the movie out next year, an official announcement and title treatment must be imminent. (Source: ComingSoon)
