S.H.I.E.L.D. TV Series Gets A Pilot, With Joss Whedon Writing It

August 29, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Last month it was revealed that US TV network ABC is looking to tap into the superhero realm, with a potential TV series set in Marvel’s superhero universe. Now Variety has revealed that the network has ordered a pilot for S.H.I.E.L.D., a series that will centre on the Strategic Hazard Intervention Espionage Logistics Directorate, which brought all the superheroes together for The Avengers.

Avengers director Joss Whedon has signed on to write the pilot script with his brother Jed Whedon, and sister-in-law Maurissa Tancharoen (Dollhouse). Joss Whedon is also expected to direct the pilot episode, if his schedule permits. It is possible for the various actors and heroes currently seen in the movie to make guest appearances, although we can’t imagine Samuel L. Jackson will be a series regular, but he may pop up now and then.

It is said that production will begin immediately, so more info should emerge in the near future.

Fresh The Master Trailer – New look at Paul Thomas Anderson’s film

August 28, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

After waiting what seems like eons for a new Paul Thomas Anderson movie (There Will Be Blood was back in 2007), The Master is nearly here, with a November 9th UK release date now set. Now a new trailer has been released. Set in America in the years following World War II, a charismatic intellectual (Philip Seymour Hoffman) launches a faith-based organisation and taps a young drifter (Joaquin Phoenix) as his right-hand man. But as the faith begins to gain a fervent following, the onetime vagabond finds himself questioning the belief system he has embraced, and his mentor.

Jon Turteltaub Gets Beached With An Olympic Swimming Fantasy

August 28, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Jon Turteltaub has signed on to develop the languishing Fox 2000 project Beached as a directing vehicle, which will capitalise on the popularity of Olympic swimming, and add in a few whales for good measure.

The plot centres on a four-year-old boy who falls overboard during a family trip. The overweight lad is then raised by whales before going on to become an Olympic swimmer (realism is not going to be one of this movie’s strong points, I feel).

This project has been kicking around since 1997, with an original screenplay by Ted Griffin (Ocean’s Eleven). Jordan Roberts (Around the Bend) wrote the most recent draft of the screenplay. Jon Turteltaub will supervise a new rewrite, although it isn’t known if another writer has signed on yet.

The director won’t get around to Beached for a while yet, as he’s currently in pre-production on the comedy Last Vegas, starring Michael Douglas, Robert De Niro, Morgan Freeman, and Kevin Kline, which is due to start shooting soon. (Source: THR)

Michael Fassbender May Join Jane Got A Gun

August 28, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Michael Fassbender is certainly a busy man, but it appears he may have time to slot another movie in, as Vulture reports that he’s in talks to join Lynne Ramsay’s Jane Got a Gun, starring opposite the already attached Natalie Portman.

The movie a woman whose outlaw husband returns home barely alive and riddled with bullet wounds. She is forced to reach out to an ex-lover and ask if he will help defend her farm when her husband’s gang eventually tracks him down to finish the job. Portman will play the main woman, while Fassbender would be the ex-lover.

Ramsay is hoping to shoot the movie by early next year, although it doesn’t appear a firm date has been set yet, with timings presumably having to fit around Portman and Fassbender’s other commitments.

Alex Kurtzman & Roberto Orci Producing Dragonology

August 28, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Thanks to the likes of Star Trek and Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman have becomes one of the most in-demand producing/writing teams in Hollywood. Now they have boarded the languishing fantasy adaptation Dragonology for Universal Pictures. The studio acquired the rights to Dugald A. Steer’s childrens book series back in June 2008, but it hasn’t moved forward that far since.

Leonard Hartman was originally set to write the adapted screenplay, but now he will only serve as executive producer, with Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman spearheading the effort to find a new writer. The faux non-fiction books are based on the notion that dragons actually exist, which was revealed by Victorian era dragonologist Ernest Drake. The story centres on a team of dragonologists who try to stop a nefarious plot where the remaining dragons will be used to kill every human on the planet.

The book series was first published in 2003, and its 12 titles have sold more than 6 million copies worldwide. The project is just the latest that Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman are shepherding through their first-look deal with Universal. They are also overseeing the remakes for Van Helsing and The Mummy. Leo DiCaprio, Tobey Maguire, and Tom Hardy To Fight Poaching

August 28, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Leo DiCaprio has always been a guys who’s wanted to fight for causes, normally of an environmental bent. Now he’s taking that to the screen, and according to THR, he’s teaming up with Tom Hardy and Tobey Maguire to do so. At the moment they’re just confirmed to produce but may well star too.

It’s Tom Hardy who’s at the front with this one, as he came up with the original idea, based on friends of his who are former military turned anti-poaching fighters in South Africa. The story has been compared in scope to Steven Soderbergh’s Traffic, which delved into several different aspects of the war on drugs. This story will cover everything from the poachers in the African jungles to the fashion houses in Paris. The producers are currently searching for a screenwriter to tackle this project.

Tom Hardy and Leonardo DiCaprio both starred in Inception for the studio in 2010, while longtime friends Tobey Maguire and Leonardo DiCaprio star in The Great Gatsby for Warner Bros., arriving in theaters next year, so its a bit of a pals reunion.
