The Bourne Legacy Trailer – First full-length trailer for the franchise expansion

May 31, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

The first full trailer for The Bourne Legacy has landed, giving us a decent look at how the film links into the previous films, even though it doesn’t feature Matt Damon, and has Jeremy Renner in the lead instead. Here’s the synopsis: ‘The narrative architect behind the Bourne film series, Tony Gilroy, takes the helm in the next chapter of the hugely popular espionage franchise that has earned almost $1 billion at the global box office: The Bourne Legacy. The writer/director expands the Bourne universe created by Robert Ludlum with an original story that introduces us to a new hero (Jeremy Renner) whose life-or-death stakes have been triggered by the events of the first three films. For The Bourne Legacy, Renner joins fellow series newcomers Rachel Weisz, Edward Norton, Stacy Keach and Oscar Isaac, while franchise veterans Albert Finney, Joan Allen, David Strathairn and Scott Glenn reprise their roles.’

Can You Help German Queer Themed Film Der Samurai Get Made?

May 31, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Getting money to make a queer themed film isn’t exactly easy, which is why we’ve highlighted quite a few crowdsourcing campaign for LGBT movies in the last few months. It’s not even as if these are amateur efforts made by people with no experience – it’s just difficult to get the cash!

Once such example is Der Samurai, a German movie that’s currently trying to find cash via IndieGoGo. It’s directed by Till Kleinert, who helmed the excellent short film Cowboy, which won the Iris Prize (the world’s largest competitive gay short film festival, held every year in Cardiff) and was featured on Boys On Film 2: In Too Deep (we gave it 8 out of 10 in our review). However despite the accolades for his earlier work, he still needs help getting Der Samurai made.

Here’s what Till has to say on IndieGogo, ‘Der Samurai is an independent feature film due to be shot this September in the deep forests of rural East Germany close to the Polish border, starring the amazing young actor Pit Bukowski in the titular role, with whom I have already worked on the award-winning medium-length film ‘Cowboy’ (see trailer)…

‘Ever since I was a small child, I have been most drawn to the adventurous, the mysterious and the uncanny in fiction, be it in the Grimm Brothers’ fairy tales or in films like the Swedish ‘Ronja Rövarsdottir’. The dark forests and abandoned, desolate estates around Berlin, although appearing very frightening to me at first, later became favourite places of mine to explore. Somehow, the feeling that the world was filled with wonder and awe for me always went hand-in-hand with the subliminal fear of something dangerous lurking at its edges.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘JAKOB, a young policeman from a remote village in the middle of nowhere, finds his small world unhinged and shattered as one night an ominous, nameless stranger in a woman’s dress emerges from the forest and commences a wave of destruction, descending on the unsuspecting town like a supernova of irrational violence.

‘Both appalled and drawn by the frightening young man and his self-proclaimed mission to liberate people (incidentally and disconcertingly by cutting off their heads with a Katana, a Samurai’s sword), Jakob propels himself for a roller coaster of reflection and revolt as he relentlessly pursues the SAMURAI through the night. There is something about the mysterious offender that strikes a hidden chord within him – threatening to unlock and reveal his own innermost demons…

‘DER SAMURAI tells a thrilling tale of fear, seduction, loss of control and liberation – a cautionary tale, if you will, about the precarious relationship between the conscious and the unacknowledged and about the consequences that ensue if you don’t confront your inner monsters. The androgynous Samurai acts as a threateningly wild and untamed alter ego to Jakob’s compulsively ‘straight’, dutiful self, confronting the young policeman with all the raw, irrational, antisocial and sexual urges that lie repressed and buried within him. It is the intense, almost romantic struggle for prevalence between those two seemingly antipodal characters that fuels DER SAMURAI’s fiercely beating heart.

As the film peaks to it’s zenith, when blood erupts in orgasmic geysers, heads tumble over asphalt and the village square is set ablaze by an all-consuming fire, the audience will find themselves shocked and exhilarated in equal measure by the small-scale apocalypse the Samurai has set forth in front and behind both Jakob’s and our own eyes.’

If you want to help out, head over to IndieGoGo and there are even rewards available depending on how much you give!

Maleficent Gets Brendan Thwaites As Its Handsome Prince

May 31, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

In the Sleeping Beauty tale, the handsome prince is a bit of an afterthought (which he is in most fairytales, because as long as you’re handsome and a prince, you don’t need any other qualifications to be worth marrying), but it appears Maleficent may give him a little more to do, as it will expand the story beyond the usual bounds, telling it from the evil fairy’s point of view (played by Angelina Jolie).

Now Deadline reports that the prince has been crowned, with Home & Away actor Brendan Thwaites set to take on the role. It’ll be his job to battle his way to the castle and wake Princess Aurora (Elle Fanning).

He joins a cast that also includes Lesley Manville, Imelda Staunton, Juno Temple, Kenneth Cranham, Sharlto Copley, Miranda Richardson and Sam Riley. Robert Stromberg will direct, with shooting set to start later this summer.

Sylvester Stallone and Robert De Niro Get Into Grudge Match

May 31, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Sylvester Stallone and Robert De Niro are in talks to take the lead in the Warner Bros. boxing comedy Grudge Match. It’s been a long time coming, as back in October 2012 Warner was eying the actors for the Peter Segal (Get Smart) directed film, but it’s only now that they’re officially in talks.

The film is said to want to evoke the spirit of Space Cowboys, although rather than seeing old guys go into space, this one has retired boxers Billy “The Kid” McGuigan and Henry “Razor” Sharp, who were bitter rivals during their pugilist careers, coaxed out of retirement for one last bout. However these aren’t guys who gave up fighting a couple of years ago, as their last match-up was 50 years ago! Doug Ellin penned the latest draft of the film.

Segal is directing with shooting expected to start early next year. (Source: The Wrap)

Game Of Thrones’ Richard Madden Goes Erotic In Long Nights

May 31, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Fans of Game Of Thrones actor Richard Madden will be pleased to hear they may be able to see a lot more of him soon, as he’s set to star in the indie erotic drama, Long Nights Short Mornings, according to Variety.

Chad Harbold’s film is about a man’s journey across New York as he sleeps with seven different women in seven nights.

Madden has gained a lot of fans as Robb Stark in Game Of Thrones, and is one of quite a few actors in the show who are vying to use the series as a springboard to something bigger. Kit Harington has already started landing major film roles and it seems Madden may now be following him. Shooting on Long Nights Short Mornings is due to start later this year.

Mireille Enos Trapped In Aton Egoyan’s Devil’s Knot

May 31, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Ever since the West Memphis Three were released from prison, it’s been known that The Sweet Hereafter helmer Atom Egoyan has been working on a movie about the case. Reese Witherspoon and Colin Firth are already attached to star in the film, and Deadline reports that they’ve now been joined by The Killing actress Mireille Enos.

Egoyan is working from a script written by The Exorcism Of Emily Rose’s Scott Derrickson and Paul Boardman, about the West Memphis 3, who were convicted of the murder of three young boys in Arkansas in the mid 90s.

However even before they were convicted there were accusations of the investigation being bungled and the men being railroaded. The youths were accused of murdering the boys in a Satanic ritual, with many suspecting they had just been caught up in a panic over Satanism that was sweeping the US (and other parts of the world) at the time, with the evidence made to fit what the prosecutors wanted it to, rather than what it did.

After years of campaigning, high-profile documentaries (particularly Paradise Lost and its sequel, which had a huge impact on the case), the three men were finally released – although it should be noted that it was part of a plea deal and they weren’t exonerated. Enos will be Vicki Hutcheson, who becomes an important witness in the case and was a link between two of the boys.

While Enos has had plenty of praise for The Killing, her star is likely to rise soon due to her roles in Gangster Squad and World War Z.

Matthew Vaughn Gets Max Barry’s Lexicon

May 31, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Matthew Vaughn is currently busy putting together the sequel to X-Men: First Class, which is set to shoot this winter, but he’s also busy looking at potential future projects, as Deadline reports that he’s optioned Max Barry new novel, Lexicon, which isn’t even due to be published until next year.

According to Deadline, in Lexicon, ‘the setting is contemporary but in a world where words are potentially lethal weapons–tools for persuading others to do what you want–which are wielded by members of a secret, ancient, global organization of people with an aptitude for persuasion in general. Their most gifted and troubled member, a young woman, breaks the society’s primary rule and falls in love.’

It’s early days though as the book isn’t ready and no screenwriter has been assigned.

Gary Oldman & Dominic Monaghan Join Monster Butler

May 31, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

While Monster Butler sounds likes the sort of title a Dreamworks Animation flick would have, it’s actually something potentially far more interesting, as it’s a biopic of a bisexual jewel thief/con man/serial killer! It’s also pulling a decent cast together, as THR reports that Gary Oldman, Dominic Monaghan, Malcolm McDowell and Joanne Whalley are all onboard.

McDowell has the lead role as Roy Fontaine (born Archibald Hall), who spent most of his life working as an outwardly respectable butler, while secretly committing all manner of crimes and murders. The movie will chronicle his personal descent into darkness leading up to his eventual capture.

Oldman will portray Wiggy, a taxidermist with anger issues and business on the side who partners with Fontaine on a number of crimes before things get heavy. Monaghan will play David Wright, a key player in Roy’s life and who also serves as his Achilles’ heel. Their relationship begins in prison and restarts when they both work on an estate. But a blackmail attempt forces Fontaine’s hand and begins his descent into murder and mayhem.

Shooting will start in June in Scotland.

Anne Hathaway In Talks For Song One

May 31, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

With the Dark Knight Rises this summer and Les Miserables at Christmas, it’s likely to be a good year for Anne Hathaway. Now she’s lining up a new project, as Variety reports that she’s in talks to re-team with the producers of Rachel Getting Married, Marc Platt and Jonathan Demme, for the indie film Song One.

There’s not a huge amount of info available on the film, but she’d play a woman who returns home when her brother is injured and starts up a relationship with his favorite musician, while also coping with her family issues. Kate Barker-Froyland came up with the script.

Hathaway is one of the biggest stars in her age group, but she doesn’t exactly have a great record with these sorts of romantic dramas, which tend to make little impact at the box office. However she’s a big enough name to get it made, so don’t be surprised if it happens.
