Sabotage (Blu-ray Review)

September 15, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Arnold Schwarzenegger, Sam Worthington, Terrence Howard, Mireille Enos, Joe Manganiello
Director: Davis Ayer
Running Time: 109 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: September 15th 2014 (UK)

There’s a tendency that even film reviewers fall into, which is to think that we always treat each individual film on its own merits. However sometimes it’s often not true. There can be a big problem when people go into a movie thinking it’s going to be one thing when actually it’s something else. As a result they judge it against their expectations not against the film itself.

I couldn’t help thinking about that while watching Sabotage, as many of the truly horrendous reviews the film have received are essentially bemoaning the fact they thought they were getting a ‘typical’ Arnie movie. However it’s not that, but the reviews still seem to view it through the lens of 80s Schwarzenegger. [Read more…]

The Captive Trailer – Ryan Reynolds stars in Atom Egoyan’s drama

April 18, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Atom Egoyan has been a busy man as he’s got two films due in the cinemas this year. There’s Devil’s Knot, starring Reese Witherspoon and Colin Firth, and The Captive, which stars Ryan Reynolds and it’s been announced will have its debut at Cannes.

Now a trailer for The Captive has arrived.

Here’s the synopsis, via TheFilmStage: ‘MATTHEW is driving his massive logging truck and leaves his precious daughter sleeping as he ducks into roadside washroom. When he returns she is gone.

‘In the following years, his wife TINA visits the police station where she has formed a relationship with the detective, NICOLE. Each year on CASS’s birthday, NICOLE gives TINA a report on how the search for her missing daughter is going. Lately, the police have identified the girl on the internet, but have had no success in tracking down her physical presence. CASS has aged 8 years since her disappearance. She is being held somewhere, but what is she doing there? The disturbing nature of her “broadcasts” is gradually revealed. Can CASS use these “broadcasts” to her advantage to plan her own escape?

‘THE CAPTIVE is a drama about how this kidnapping destroys two relationships—that of MATTHEW AND TINA, who blames her husband for all that has happened, as well of that of NICOLE and her co-worker JEFFREY. NICOLE AND JEFFREY work intensely with the horrors of internet child abuse crimes from day to day. Surprisingly, they find they have a good relationship despite their horrific work and are attracted to each other. They have a strong connection until the moment when Jeffrey’s obsession with work crosses an ethical line.’

The Captive should be in cinemas later this year. [Read more…]

If I Stay Trailer – Chloe Moretz gets caught between life and death

April 17, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

If I Stay is one of those movies that could either be fascinating or utterly dreadful, as it’s got a premise that has a lot of promise but needs careful handling.

We won’t know whether it works or not until its release later this year – it’s due out in August in the US but no UK date is currently set. However we can get a taste with a trailer.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘On a day that started like any other, Mia (Chloe Moretz) had everything: a loving family, an adoring boyfriend, and a bright future full of music. Suddenly, a family drive on a snowy day changes everything. In an instant, almost all of that is taken from her.

‘Caught between life and death, Mia spends one critical day contemplating a future that is now more unknowable than ever. Is love enough to keep her here? Tragic but ultimately hopeful, this is a romantic, riveting and uplifting story about music, life and love.’ [Read more…]

World War Z (DVD)

October 21, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Mireille Enos, Daniella Kertesz, James Badge Dale, Peter Capaldi, Brad Pitt
Director: Marc Forster
Running Time: 111 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: October 21st 2013

After a troubled production history, many thought World War Z would be the flop of the summer. However it became a pretty decent hit, grossing over $540 million around the world. That’s pretty impressive for a film that had to have its entire final act scrapped and a brand new one shot to replace it.

Brad Pitt plays Gerry Lane, who gets in his car one morning with his family and heads off into the city. Suddenly all hell breaks loose, as out of nowhere zombies start ravaging the streets, attacking everyone they can find and turning them into one of them. Gerry and his family manage to escape and soon learn the zombie plague has spread across the world. [Read more…]

Brad Pitt Must Escape A Universe Gone Gay In World War G

June 29, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

‘Based on a conservative fever dream…’ Funny Or Die has put together a great new vid that edits together bits of World War Z, but instead of zombies it imagine Brad Pitt and his family having to escape a world gone gay.

After all, if we give gays rights, that’s the end of the human race, apparently!

And when you mix in a little of Pedro Almodovar’s new movie, I’m So Excited, things get really serious!

Take a look at World War G above (and thankfully it’s not real, as Brad’s a fervent supporter of gay rights).

New World War Z Trailer Hits – Plus zombies attack a helicopter in a new poster

March 25, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Despite a rather troubled production history, with the entire final part of the movie needing to be reshot, World War Z certainly looks like it’s going to be worth a look, with the trailers suggesting a zombie movie on a scale we’ve never seen before.

Now a new promo has arrived, with a bit more plot, plenty of Brad Pitt and an awful lot of relentless zombies. It also appears to be the year of trailers featuring people being sucked out of planes, as that’s what happens here, just a few weeks after something similar happened in the Iron Man 3 trailer.

There’s also a new poster, featuring the undead attacking a helicopter, which you can see above. The film hits cinemas June 21st.

Rosario Dawson Joins Ryan Reynolds In Queen Of The Night

January 24, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

rosario-dawsonSeveral months ago now it was revealed that Ryan Reynolds had signed on to star in Queen Of The Night, which Sweet Hereafter helmer Atom Egoyan is planning to direct. Since then the likes of Scott Speedman and Mireille Enos have signed on for the movie, and now Reynolds has got some more company in the movie, as Variety reports that Rosario Dawson has signed up for the film.

Based on a screenplay by Egoyan and David Fraser, Reynolds will play a father who goes in search of his missing daughter. While the girl was eight at the time of her abduction, her dad gets new information about the case almost nine years later, which leads him to think his daughter is still alive.

Mireille Enos will be Reynolds wife, who always checks in with the police on her missing daughter’s birthday. She realises that disturbing memorabilia left at her workplace are clues leading to her daughter’s whereabouts. Dawson joins Speedman as a detective heading up an investigation into the location of an abducted child.

Shooting starts this month in Canada.

Scott Speedman & Mireille Enos Join Queen of the Night

December 17, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Scott-SpeedmanMireille Enos and Scott Speedman have joined Ryan Reynolds in director Atom Egoyan’s dramatic new movie, the psychological thriller Queen of the Night, according to Deadline.

Reynolds will play a father who goes in search of his missing daughter.

Speedman – who’s just got a lot more spare time to take the role as his TV series Last Resort has been cancelled – will play the cop assigned to the missing girl’s case.

Both of these actors are Egoyan veterans, as Enos recently worked with him on Devil’s Knot, while Speedman appears in the Canadian helmer’s Adoration. Atom Egoyan wrote the original screenplay with David Fraser, with plans to shoot early next year in Ontario.

Mireille Enos Trapped In Aton Egoyan’s Devil’s Knot

May 31, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Ever since the West Memphis Three were released from prison, it’s been known that The Sweet Hereafter helmer Atom Egoyan has been working on a movie about the case. Reese Witherspoon and Colin Firth are already attached to star in the film, and Deadline reports that they’ve now been joined by The Killing actress Mireille Enos.

Egoyan is working from a script written by The Exorcism Of Emily Rose’s Scott Derrickson and Paul Boardman, about the West Memphis 3, who were convicted of the murder of three young boys in Arkansas in the mid 90s.

However even before they were convicted there were accusations of the investigation being bungled and the men being railroaded. The youths were accused of murdering the boys in a Satanic ritual, with many suspecting they had just been caught up in a panic over Satanism that was sweeping the US (and other parts of the world) at the time, with the evidence made to fit what the prosecutors wanted it to, rather than what it did.

After years of campaigning, high-profile documentaries (particularly Paradise Lost and its sequel, which had a huge impact on the case), the three men were finally released – although it should be noted that it was part of a plea deal and they weren’t exonerated. Enos will be Vicki Hutcheson, who becomes an important witness in the case and was a link between two of the boys.

While Enos has had plenty of praise for The Killing, her star is likely to rise soon due to her roles in Gangster Squad and World War Z.
