The Great Gatsby Trailer – DiCaprio, Maguire and Mulligan take on the classic

May 23, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

When it was announced Baz Luhrmann had gotten the go ahead for a $100 million plus version of The Great Gatsby, many thought Warner Bros was insane. But not only is it good Oscar bait and a potential moneyspinner but the studio also realises that as F. Scott Fitzgerald’s book is a classic taught in nearly all US schools, it will keep pulling in cash for years to come. Now the first trailer has arrived, suggested this will be a truly glossy, impressive looking film, full of Luhrmann’s trademark visual panache.

The Great Gatsby follows Fitzgerald-like, would-be writer Nick Carraway (Tobey Maguire) as he leaves the Midwest and comes to New York City in the spring of 1922, an era of loosening morals, glittering jazz and bootleg kings. Chasing his own American Dream, Nick lands next door to a mysterious, party-giving millionaire, Jay Gatsby (Leonardo DiCaprio), and across the bay from his cousin, Daisy (Carey Mulligan), and her philandering, blue-blooded husband, Tom Buchanan (Joel Edgerton). It is thus that Nick is drawn into the captivating world of the super-rich, their illusions, loves and deceits. As Nick bears witness, within and without the world he inhabits, he pens a tale of impossible love, incorruptible dreams and high-octane tragedy, and holds a mirror to our own modern times and struggles. The film hits cinemas at Christmas.

Matt LeBlanc Gets Lovesick In New Indie

May 23, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Matt LeBlanc hasn’t appeared in a movie since Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle in 2003, but perhaps his Golden Globe win for Episodes has given him a bit more clout, as Variety reports he’s going indie with a new movie called Lovesick. The film will be feature-length directorial debut of Luke Matheny, who won the Best Live Action Short Oscar last year.

LeBlanc will play Charlie Darby, who has everything anyone could want except for love. There’s a good reason for that, as every time he gets close to love, he becomes clinically insane! He must gets over his bouts of psychosis when the perfect girl turns up.

The plan is to shoot the film in June in Los Angeles.

Hailee Steinfeld Joins Why We Broke Up

May 23, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Hailee Steinfeld made a huge impression (and scored an Oscar nom) for True Grit, but we haven’t seen anything fom her since. She’s got Romeo & Juliet and Ender’s Game coming up, and now she’s added another possibility, as Deadline reports Steinfeld is in final negotiations to join Fox’s comedy Why We Broke Up.

The film is an adaptation of a book by Daniel Handler, who also wrote the Lemony Snicket novel series. Steinfeld will play Min, a high school sophomore who enjoys hanging out with friends at their favourite coffee shop. She falls for Ed, a senior and captain of the basketball team, and gets caught up in their roller coaster romance. The story unfolds a few weeks after their break-up, when she drops off a letter and a box of mementos on his porch.

Beth McCarthy-Miller is directing from an adapted screenplay by Daniel Handler. There’s no news on when it might shoot.

Six Dark Knight Rises Character Posters

May 23, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Yesterday a new poster for The Dark Knight Rises was released, which many (including us) were less than impressed with, partly because it just looked like bits and pieces of old poster shoved together without to much thought. However now six character posters have shown up via Yahoo! and the film’s French Facebook page, which are much, much cooler.

Take a look at them above and below and revel in the Bane and Catwoman goodness. The film’s out July 20th.

Zach Galifianakis Could Lead Confederacy Of Dunces

May 23, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Almost since it was published in 1980, Hollywood has been sniffing around John Kennedy Toole’s A Confederacy Of Dunces for a film adaptation, but it’s never happened. Now Paramount say they’re moving forward with Dunces, with Vulture reporting that Zach Galifianakis is in talks to star, and Muppets helmer Jame Bobin may direct.

Cedar Rapids’ writer Phil Johnston is attached to write the script for this latest version of the script, The book is set in the early 60s in New Orleans, where a lazy, overweight, strangely dressed modern Don Quixote is forced to move out of his mother’s house and find his place in the world.

A film version came closest to reality in 2005 when Ferrell was attached to play the lead and David Gordon Green was going to direct. Steven Soderbergh and Scott Kramer were writing the script and Lily Tomlin was on-board to play Ignatius’ mother. Whether it really happens this time is still uncertain, but they’re certainly trying.

Disney Halts Development Of The Order of the Seven

May 23, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

When there’s changes at the top of a studio, quite often movies get cancelled and other are put into production. It seems that’s happening at Disney, as the studio has pulled the plug on The Order of the Seven, a new rendition of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs set in Asia, according to THR.

The project had been in development for a while, with Saoirse Ronan signing on to star in February. Disney even hired Iron Man writers Hawk Ostby and Mark Fergus to polish the script last week. But now all of that development work has been stopped. The studio has been re-evaluating their big-budget projects, after the box office failure of John Carter and the departure of studio head Rich Ross. The Order of the Seven’s budget was not disclosed, although it was a high enough number to have the studio reconsider their options.

The story centred on a woman in 19th Century Hong Kong, who flees from her wicked stepmother and finds solace with seven brave warriors. The men belong to a clan known for fighting dragons and demons. Michael Gracey was slated to make his directorial debut on The Order of the Seven, but it doesn’t seem this project will be moving forward anytime soon.

Natalie Portman Joins Jane Got A Gun

May 23, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Natalie Portman is going to to old west, as THR reports that she’s attached to star in and produce the Jane Got a Gun for director Lynne Ramsay (We Need to Talk About Kevin). And just having Ramsay involved suggests this won’t be your average western.

The project is about a woman who must defend her farm from her outlaw husband’s gang, after he manages to return home, clinging to life after a gunfight. The wife seeks the help of an ex-lover when the gang shows up on their land.

Brian Duffield wrote the screenplay, which landed on The Black List of the best unproduced screenplays and has sparked a bidding war at Cannes between financiers, foreign sales agents, and studios. The project may end up being funded by a combination of studio funds, private equity firms, and foreign pre-sale deals.

Sheffield Doc/Fest 2012 Plans Queer Culture Premieres

May 22, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

21 May 2012: Sheffield Doc/Fest 2012 film programme includes three feature films about queer culture, including one European premiere, along with a number of shorts. Many films will be followed by a question and answer session by the filmmaker.

Sheffield Doc/Fest is the UK’s premiere documentary and digital media festival. It is the place to see world and UK premieres of the best creative documentaries from the cinema, television and online arenas, and to hear from and meet filmmakers at Q&A sessions. Highlights of the film programme are honoured with an award programme including the Sheffield Special Jury, Innovation, Green, Youth Jury, Inspiration, Student Doc and Audience Awards. The year’s fest runs June 13th-17th.

Here are the Queer Culture flicks showing at the festival:

HOW TO SURVIVE A PLAGUE (EUROPEAN PREMIERE)
Dir. David France/USA 2012 / 110 mins
By the mid 1980s, Greenwich Village’s once thriving gay community was faced with an appalling scenario: astonishing numbers of people were dying by AIDs, and there was no cure in sight. Not only were hospitals turning away AIDs victims, but the community was subject to a brutal backlash of homophobia, with the corpses of AIDs victims even rejected by funeral parlours. Driven by desperation, the gay community were forced to become change-making activists – a role in which they soon found they excelled. Frustrated by a drug testing protocol that had not prioritised AIDs research – and in which new drugs took up to a decade of testing before approval – the community mobilised through very public demonstrations, and by equipping themselves with the scientific knowledge to spearhead a completely new strategy towards drug development. We follow the story of a number of prominent activists as they battle against the clock in a race for their lives.

It is hoped that director David France will be attending the festival.

CALL ME KUCHU (Special Jury/UK PREMIERE)
Dir. Malika Zouhali-Worrall, Katherine Fairfax Wright/ USA 2012/ 87 mins
It opens with a seemingly harmless gathering, celebrating a same sex relationship. It soon becomes clear, however, that everyone in attendance is risking their lives. This is Uganda, where not only is homosexuality outlawed, but a witchhunt is on to out the “Kuchu”. American Christian evangelicals have dubbed Uganda “Ground Zero” – a testing ground for new, tougher anti-homosexuality legislation, proposing the death penalty for HIV positive men, and imprisonment for anyone not reporting Kuchu to the authorities. The young editor of the crusading local newspaper delightedly shares his persecution strategies, noting with pride that he’ll tell his grandchildren about his role in implementing the “kill the gays” bill. The country’s first openly gay man, David Kato, is leading a small band of activists in fighting for their right to exist –amongst a public baying for blood. An alarming, astonishing film, with access to those on both sides of the trenches.

Director Malika Zouhali-Worrall will be attending the festival.

LOVE FREE OR DIE (Youth Jury)
Dir. Macky Alston/ USA 2011/ 82 mins
When he was consecrated in 2003 wearing a bulletproof vest, Gene Robinson became the Anglican Church’s first openly gay bishop. It’s a job he didn’t seek, but one he now relishes. Robinson has spent the last decade preaching for inclusion –while being shunned by many of his fellow clergy. At the Lambeth conference, a major Anglican gathering, all 800 bishops are invited – except Robinson, whose face is pinned up the security office so they know who to kick out. Supported by his long-term partner Mark and loving daughters, Robinson is determined to charm whomever he is given access to – including Barack Obama, who selected him to open his inaugural events. Director Macky Alston uses Robinson’s story to explore the schism that continues to bitterly divide a church determinedly behind the times. Attracting both hecklers and autograph seekers alike, Robinson’s message is a simple one: it is time to recognise that homosexuality and faith are not incompatible.

Rupert Everett Directing Oscar Wilde Biopic With Colin Firth

May 22, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

It seems Colin Firth is going to spend much of the next year or so playing gay. Just yesterday we reported he is attached to a biopic of gay entertainer Noel Coward, covering his time in Las Vegas. Now Variety reports that Firth is set to play Oscar Wilde in a movie called The Happy Prince, which is being written and directed by Rupert Everett.

While Stephen Fry’s 1997 film, Wilde, concentrated on Wilde’s most productive years and the run up to the trial that ended up with him getting imprisoned on charges of sodomy and gross indecency, The Happy Prince focuses on Oscar’s final days. It will see Wilde considering his own failure through his trademark wit and irony. After his imprisonment, Wilde spent his days in self-imposed exile in France He briefly reunited with his love, Lord Alfred Douglas, but was kept away from his children. Although he published The Ballad Of Reading Gaol, he did very little writing and his health began to fail (partly due to poverty). He died of cerebral meningitis at the age of 46.

As well as Firth, Edward Fox, Emily Watson and Tom Wilkinson are also onboard the movie. While the movie will mark Everett’s directorial debut, he’s no stranger to Wilde, having starred in adaptations of The Importance Of Being Earnest and An Ideal Husband. It’s due to shoot sumer 2013.

New Dark Knight Rises Poster Gets Explosive

May 22, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

A brand new poster for The Dark Knight Rises has arrived, which you can see above. To be honest it’s a little bit lazy, as it’s essentially just bits and pieces of old posters shoved together to create a new one, but we’re sure Bat fans will get excited anyway.

The movie hits July 20th, so less than two months to wait!
