Justin Lin Set to Direct Lone Wolf and Cub

March 28, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

In certain circles both the manga and 1970s live-action Japanese film versions of Lone Wolf And Cub are seen as classics of their type. Now Fast Five director Justin Lin wants to take the tale Hollywood, as Deadline reports that he has officially signed on to take the helm of Lone Wolf and Cub for Kamala Films.

David Webb Peoples and Janet Peoples (12 Monkeys, Blade Runner) are adapting the Japanese manga created by Kazuo Koike. The story takes place in feudal Japan and centres on a Shogun executioner who is falsely accused of a crime and is forced to wander the country with his three-year-old son, finding work as an assassin for hire.

Here’s what Justin Lin had to say about the husband and wife writing team of David Webb Peoples and Janet Peoples, “I’ve long admired the Peoples and their enduring body of work. They’re a wonderful match for Lone Wolf and Cub and I’m really looking forward to collaborating with them on this powerful, epic tale.”

It isn’t certain when the film might go into production, as Lone Wolf is just one of several movies Lin is developing under a deal with Universal Studios.

Kenneth Branagh Takes Over Chris Pine’s Jack Ryan Pic

March 28, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

When Paramount announced a couple of years ago they wanted to reboot the Jack Ryan franchise, taking it younger and edgier after the Alec Baldwin, Harrison Ford and Ben Affleck takes on the character, the idea was to get it up and running as fast as possible. However it’s been held up by all sorts of issues, mostly to do with the script, although the latest has been due to the director leaving.

Now Variety reports that Paramount is already on the case to find a replacement and that Kenneth Branagh is in talks to direct after Lawrence Bender pulled out last week. Bender is said to have left due to everyone being at creative loggerheads, with Chris Pine apparently wanting to make a character-driven espionage movie, producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura wanting an action movie and Paramount executives hoping for a thriller. Now Branagh’s got to sort all that out!

Chris Pine is still attached to star as Jack Ryan, but the delays forced Paramount to move the actor’s Star Trek 2 into production before this reboot. If Kenneth Branagh finalises his deal, production will start in September, after Chris Pine wraps on Star Trek 2. It’s not certain if Branagh will have time to direct The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society before then, which was his original plan.

First Official Look At Hugh Jackman In Les Miserables

March 28, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

In the last couple of weeks, sneakily snapped paparazzi images of Hugh Jackman on the set of Les Miserables have been showing up online. Now Jackman has decided to trump them all, releasing the first official look at him in the movie on Twitter, all dolled up as convict Jean Valjean!

The long-gestating film version of the hit musical sees Jackman as Valjean, a prisoner who is on the run, with a dogged policeman named Javert (Russell Crowe) spending years tracking him down during the French Revolution. It’ll be in cinemas at the end of the year. The King’s Speech’s Tom Hopper is directing.

Two New Dark Shadows TV Spots

March 27, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

When the trailer for Dark Shadows arrived recently, it looked a lot of fun, but it was difficult to work out exactly what it was all about and what tone it was going for. Now two TV spots have shown up which give a slightly better look at the movie, giving us a feel for the humour and storyline. It certainly looks like it could be a lot of fun. The film’s out May 11th.

Joel Kinnaman Says New Robocop Will Have A Face

March 27, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

A Robocop remake has been in the works for years, going through various different scripts and ideas about how to bring the very 80s movie into the modern day. However things are now being pinned down as to exactly what direction they’re taking, as the movie will start shooting later this year, with Jose Padilha directing and The Killing’s Joel Kinnaman in the title role.

Now Kinnaman has been talking about this new version to MTV, saying that, “RoboCop is going to be a lot more human. The first movie is one of my favorite movies. I love it. Of course, Paul Verhoeven has that very special tone, and it’s not going to have that tone. It’s a re-imagination of it. There’s a lot of stuff from the original. There are some details and throwbacks, but this version is a much better acting piece, for Alex Murphy and especially when he is RoboCop. It’s much more challenging. It’s not going to be jaw action. They’re still working on the suit and how it’s going to look, but the visor is going to be see-through. You’re going to see his eyes.”

The actor also says that the movie will be dealing with real science and the study of neurons in the body. “There’s a lot of neuroscience now raising the question, ‘Is all the intelligence in the human body in the brain?’ and they’re finding out that, no, it’s not like that,” says Kinnaman. “The body has intelligence itself, and we’re much more of an organic creature in that way. It’s not a control tower that does everything.”

One of the more gruesome scenes in the original, which sees Murphy being shot to death, is going to be toned down. There will be no complete on-screen decimation of the man’s hand this time around. “Yeah. It’s going to be different. But it’s very good. I was looking to do a big movie and to show that I can carry a big movie, and I couldn’t be happier that this is going to be one of those big movies, a blockbuster, but that is also a real movie. A movie-movie. It’s going to have a political satire to it too. I’m super stoked. Especially with this director. José Padilha is a badass. He’s the real deal.”

Will Ferrell Going To Crazy U

March 27, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Will Ferrell could do with a hit, and he’ll be hoping he gets one from Crazy U, which Deadline says Ferrell has signed onto star in and produce for New Line Cinema and his Gary Sanchez Productions.

The project is based on Andrew Ferguson’s non-fiction book, Crazy U: One Dad’s Crash Course in Getting His Kid Into College, which as the title suggests, is about a father who is obsessed with getting his son into the perfect college. This involves hiring a professional college consultant, helping his son pass the SAT’s, and leading him through college interviews and tours. The film is being developed as a starring vehicle for Will Ferrell, with the presumption that he will play the father.

No screenwriter or director have been attached to Crazy U yet.

Channing Tatum Offered The Wachowskis Jupiter Ascending

March 27, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

The Wachowskis siblings aren’t big fans of letting the world know what they’re up to, but they’re currently in post-production of Cloud Atlas, their planned ‘gay Iraq movie’ has bitten the dust due to lack of funding, and the only other thing on the horizon is a slightly mysterious sci-fi project called Jupiter Ascending.

That latter movie is now going ahead, as Deadline reports that Channing Tatum and Mila Kunis have been offered the lead roles in the film. Back in January it was rumoured that actress Natalie Portman was strongly considering the female lead, but that role has now gone to Kunis. Little has been revealed about the story line, except that it will be Andy Wachowski and Lana Wachowski’s first sci-fi movie since The Matrix trilogy.

The Wachowskis hope to start shooting later this year.

Jane Fonda Playing Nancy Reagan In The Butler

March 27, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

If you’d said in the 80s that one day ‘Hanoi’ Jane Fonda would play arch conservative Nancy Reagan in a movie, people would probably have laughed at you, as there are few people whose outllook on life matches less. However it’s going to happen, as Variety reports that Fonda has joined the cast of The Butler for Precious director Lee Daniels, playing Reagan in this biopic about longtime White House butler Eugene Allen.

Forest Whitaker will play Allen, who first started working at the White House under President Harry S. Truman in 1952, and retired in 1986 during Ronald Reagan’s second term. Oprah Winfrey is in talks to play Allen’s wife, while David Oyelowo is negotiating to play Allen’s son. Liam Neeson and John Cusack are also circling the presidential roles of Lyndon B. Johnson and Richard Nixon.

Lee Daniels is directing The Butler from a screenplay he co-wrote with Danny Strong. No casting deals are fully locked in yet, although production is expected to begin sometime this summer.

Mickey Rourke Out Of Gareth Thomas Biopic

March 26, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

It was always a bit odd that Mickey Rourke was keen to play out gay rugby player Gareth Thomas, not least because Rourke is 59 and Thomas  is 37. However Mickey loved the story of the player who married, had kids, and managed to get to the top of the rugby game, all while struggling with his sexuality, eventually being one of the first national team sports players in the world to come out.

However while Rourke has been in training for the role, it now appears he’s been forced to pull out due to an injury he sustained while get ready to play the part. The film isn’t over though, as Thomas himself told the Sun On Sunday, “I was talking to Mickey and basically we’re now talking to other big-name actors who could play the part instead.

“We had talked about using computer-generated special effects with Mickey but we don’t think that will be as realistic, so it’s time to find someone new.”

There are rumours Tom Hardy may be in the running to play Thomas, although it isn’t clear whether this is just because he would seem to be the person who makes most sense for the part, or if he’s actually shown any interest. Personally there’s nothing we’d like to see more than Hardy getting sweaty on the pitch and then locking lips with another guy! It’s certainly more appealing than Mickey Rourke.
