Ricardo de Monteuil May Direct Zorro Reborn

March 8, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Fox is keen to completely reinvent Zorro, with a futuristic take on the swordsman. With other studios eyeing different takes of the legendary character, Fox is keen to move forward on its version as quickly as possible. A few weeks ago, Gael Garcia Bernal emerged as frontrunner for the lead role, and now Variety reports that Peruvian helmer Ricardo de Monteuil may direct.

The idea behind the reboot is to take Zorro into a post-apocalyptic era. The story will not be set in California or Mexico, but a futuristic wasteland, with Bernal as a masked vigilante bent on revenge. The film was written by Glenn Gers with help from Lee Shipman and Brian McGreevy.

The movie’s not the only Zorro flick around, as Sony (which made the Antonio Banderas Zorro movies) is developing an origin story about the Mexican American hero, based on Isabel Allende’s 2005 novel simply called Zorro.

Although there’s no deal for de Monteuil to direct Zorro Reborn at the moment, he will helm Bernal’s screen test, putting him in prime place to get the job making the movie.

Alexandre Aja Eyes Undying Love Comic Adaptation

March 8, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Alexandre Aja has a lot of fans in horror circles thanks to Switchblade Romance, The Hills Have Eyes and Piranha. Now he’s heading into the world of comic adaptations as Deadline reports he’s in early negotiations to direct a movie version of Tomm Coker and Daniel Freedman’s Undying Love.

The comic follow an ex-soldier who falls for a girl who happens to be a vampire. The only way the two can be together is if the man takes on the vampire who created her, which also means fighting an army of monsters in the Hong Kong underworld. The story mixes traditional vampire lore with Chinese monster myths and the Hong Kong action genre.

It could certainly make an interesting movie, with plenty of Aja’s beloved violence, mixed with full on martial arts action.

Max Landis Set To Write Chronicle Sequel

March 8, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

A lot of people wondered whether Max Landis was getting work in Hollywood more because he was the son of John Landis than his own talent, but the moment Chronicle opened, the critics were silenced. He’s now hugely in demand, but Deadline says he’ll find the time to write a follow-up to Chronicle.

He’s a busy boy though, as the writer is also hard at work writing Amnesty, an untitled movie that Ron Howard is set to direct, and an adventure pic for Disney. Goodness knows when he’ll fit in Chronicle 2, but he’s now signed on to pen the screenplay so he obviously thinks he can slot it in to his schedule.

Chronicle stars Dane DeHaan, Alex Russell and Michael B. Jordan as high school friends who gain superpowers but find their lives going out of control and their friendships tested. The low-budget movie has grossed more than $100 million at the box office worldwide since Fox released it in February.

Nicholas Braun & Brandon T. Jackson Will Get A Job

March 8, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Get A Job is certainly drawing a good cast together, with Miles Teller, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Jay Pharaoh, Mimi Gianopulos, Anna Kendrick and Bryan Cranston already attached, and now Variety reports that Nicholas Braun (Red State, Prom) and Brandon T. Jackson (Percy Jackson) have signed up too.

Kyle Pennekamp and Scott Turpel’s script follows a college graduate (Miles Teller) and his friends who have to lower their expectations about life as they enter the real world during a recession. Nicholas Braun will play the graduates’ perpetually stoned pal who takes a job as a middle school teacher to pay the bills and comes to find his true calling as a basketball coach. Jackson will play another friend who gets work as a day trader and learns that like most people, he has to start at the bottom doing the daily grind and work his way up the company ladder.

Rodger Dodger helmer Dylan Kidd is directing.

Jake Gyllenhaal Replaces Dominic Cooper In Motor City

March 8, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Who’s better – Jake Gyllenhaal or Dominic Cooper? I can imagine both have their fans, but Jake is probably the bigger star, and he has now stepped in to replace Cooper as the male lead in Warner Bros.’ crime thriller Motor City, according to Variety. Dominic backed out due to scheduling conflicts, presumably because the Motor City clashes with Cities, which he recently signed up for.

Gyllenhaal will play an ex-con who gets released from prison and sets off on a quest for vengeance, seeking out the men who framed him. Amber Heard will be the female lead, while Gary Oldman is set to play the villain.

Albert Hughes, best known for directing the likes of From Hell and The Book Of Eli with his brother Allen, is helming Motor City from Chad St. John’s screenplay, which landed on the Black List back in 2009. It isn’t known when the movie will shoot.

Jessica Lucas Up For Evil Dead Remake

March 8, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

The cast of the long-gestating remake of The Evil Dead is filling up, with THR reporting that Cloverfield actress Jessica Lucas has joined the cast of the movie, along with Newcomer Elizabeth Blackmore.

The film is about a group of friends who spend the weekend in a remote cabin, only to unwittingly unleash an evil force after reading from The Book of the Dead. Last month that Suburgatory star Jane Levy replaced Lily Colling as female lead Mia, who goes on the trip to try and kick her drug addiction. Jessica Lucas will play Mia’s best friend, who is also a nurse, which Elizabeth Blackmore will play the fiancee of Shiloh Fernandez’s character.

Federico Alvarez is directing The Evil Dead from a script he co-wrote with Rodolfo Sayagues, which was rewritten by Diablo Cody. Shooting is set to begin next month in New Zealand.

BGPS Is Looking For A Writer/Journalist To Cover London Lesbian & Gay Film Festival

March 7, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

BigGayPictureShow.com is looking for new writers to join our team, and most urgently we’re looking for a London based gay writer/journalist to cover the London Lesbian & Gay Film Festival, which runs from March 23rd-April 1st. This is a voluntary, unpaid role, but we should be able to help someone get a free press pass for the festival and the opportunity to see a lot of interesting movies.

We’re also looking for writers for all parts of the site, whether it’s reviews, features, interviews or anything else. We’d love to hear your ideas.

Unfortunately at the moment all work done for the Big Gay Picture Show website is unpaid (we wish we could pay, but it’s a website done by us for love more than anything else). If you are interested in adding your voice to the site, please e-mail us with some info telling us why you think you’ve got what it takes and what you’re keen to do (we’re always happy to hear new ideas). You should also attach some examples of your writing if possible (preferably film/DVD reviews). If we believe you’d be a good fit for the site we’ll contact you, explaining how things work and to discuss what we might be able to do together.

We look forward to hearing from you.

Please E-mail your covering letter and writing examples to: [email protected]

Lesbian Werewolf Drama Jack & Diane Set To Premiere At Tribeca

March 7, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Jack & Diane has a fairly long production history, which largely consists of various actresses such as Ellen Page and Olivia Thirlby attaching themselves to the title roles, before moving on. As a result it took a long time to get it in the can, but it was finally filmed last year with Riley Keough (who’s Elvis Presley granddaughter, incidentally) and Juno Temple in the lead roles.

Now the lesbian-themed fantasy drama film is set to gets its premiere, with the announcement (via The Playlist) that it’ll screen at the Tribeca Film Festival in New York, which runs April 18th-29th.

The movie is about two teenage girls who meet in New York City and despite being very different, spark up a relationship. When Jack discovers that Diane is leaving the country in a week she tries to push her away. Diane struggles to keep their love alive while hiding the secret that her newly awakened sexual desire is giving her werewolf-like visions.

Jena Malone also stars, with Kyle Minogue popping up in the movie as a tattooed lesbian. Hopefully the movie will reach the UK later this year.

Awesome New Prometheus Image Online

March 7, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

As part of the viral campaign for Ridley Scott’s Prometheus, a Twitter user going under the handle @MOVIELORD1 managed to decode a new image from the just launched website www.weylandindustries.com. It’s a rather awesome, ethereal pic, and you can get a better look by clicking on the pic above and expanding it.

And if you look right in the centre of the vision of the cosmos, you can see a figure standing there. But who is it?

Fox has also just promised that a new trailer, along with a Ridley Scott Q&A, will arrive on March 17th, which is certainly something to look forward to. The film’s out June 1st, and just to remind you, here’s the enigmatic synopsis for the movie that will be shot through with Alien DNA: ‘Ridley Scott, director of “Alien” and “Blade Runner,” returns to the genre he helped define. With PROMETHEUS, he creates a groundbreaking mythology, in which a team of explorers discover a clue to the origins of mankind on Earth, leading them on a thrilling journey to the darkest corners of the universe. There, they must fight a terrifying battle to save the future of the human race.’

The Muppets Parody the Hunger Games

March 7, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Last year we got a slew of Muppet parody trailers for everything from The Hangover to The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo and now they’re back with one more, this time giving The Hunger Games a gentle ribbing (and reminding us The Muppets film is still in cinemas, of course). Enjoy the silliness above.
