Marc Forster Set To Direct Cowboy Ninja Viking

February 29, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Quantum Of Solace may have been widely derided, but director World War Z is hoping that the Brad Pitt zombie epic World War Z will turn him into a major genre director, and now it looks like he’s found his follow-up.

Deadline reports that Forster is teaming up with Universal Pictures to bring Cowboy Ninja Viking to the big screen. The film follows a secret government program to turn schizophrenics into assassins. The main character comes through the program with the skill sets of a cowboy, ninja and a viking. While most of the patients involved in the program are sent back to insane asylum after the program goes awry in Iraq, he escapes and uses his skills to track down the billionaire who masterminded the program.

The script, by AJ Lieberman and artist Riley Rossmo from Image Comics, was original in the hands of Disney, but is was deemed too edgy for their family film mandate and so has now gone to Universal.

Ryan Murphy Planning Star-Studded Musical One Hit Wonders

February 29, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Ryan Murphy has plenty of experience with musical comedy as the creator of Glee, and now he’s joining forces with Sony Pictures for a musical called One Hit Wonders, which Deadline reports has Gwyneth Paltrow, Reese Witherspoon, Cameron Diaz, Beyoncé Knowles, and Andy Samberg attached to star.

The film is about three singers (Paltrow, Witherspoon, and Diaz), who each had hit singles in the 1990s, although their careers fizzled shortly thereafter. They decide to jump-start their careers once more by combining to form a super group. No character details were given for Beyoncé Knowles and Andy Samberg’s parts, although Samberg will be involved in generating the music for the movie with his Lonely Island cohorts.

Ryan Murphy will direct One Hit Wonders from a script he is co-writing with his Glee collaborators Brad Falchuk and Ian Brennan. Murphy wants to start production on One Hit Wonders after he wraps on his next project, The Normal Heart, which is due to shoot this spring.

Elizabeth Olsen Offered Oldboy Female Lead

February 29, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Martha Marcy May Marlene star Elizabeth Olsen has been offered the female lead role in Spike Lee’s planned remake of Oldboy remake, according to Twitch. It isn’t known yet if the young actress will accept the part or not.

She’s not the first to have been eyed for the role, as previously Rooney Mara was a top contender for the part, although she eventually passed on the project, as did Mia Wasikowska. Josh Brolin is set to star in the remake, but as with its female lead, the production has had difficulty securing an actor to portray the villain. Actors such as Christian Bale, Colin Firth, and Clive Owen have all turned down the role.

It’s not certain when Oldboy might start shooting, especially as it’s having such a tough time getting a cast together.

Terence Davies Adapting Gay Novel Mother Of Sorrows

February 28, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Terence Davies is certainly speeding up his work rate. There were 11 years between The House Of Mirth and last year’s The Deep Blue Sea, but he’s recently revealed he’s moving forward with a long-cherished project called Sunset Song and now Variety reports he’s set to adapt Richard McCann’s award-winning novel, Mother of Sorrows.

Davies has never really come to terms with his sexuality and still claims to hate being gay. Much of his career as a director can be seen as him dealing with his difficulty growing up gay and it looks like that’s set to continue with Mother Of Sorrows. McCann’s book, which won the John C. Zacharis First Book Award and was nominated for the Stonewall Book Award for gay fiction, tells a series of interconnected stories, recounting the tough and tragic life of two gay brothers, growing up in the 1950s.

‘This is an important story because it touches the humanity in all of us,’ Davies says. ‘I love the delicacy of the book and its gentle odyssey from post-WWII optimism for the American Utopia to a deeper understanding of both maternal and filial love and an acceptance of mortality by surrendering to the light.’

It’s still early days and Davies has often had difficulty finding funding, but he’s hoping to get Mother Of Sorrows made after he finished Sunset Song.

Avengers Gets A New Name And A New Poster To Prove It

February 28, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Marvel’s The Avengers is no more, in the UK at least, as with less than two months before its release, the movie has a new title. So what’s it going to be called? Well, distributor Disney has revealed it’ll be known as Marvel Avengers Assemble in Britain, and they’ve released the poster above to prove it.

An Avengers assemble trailer is promised tomorrow afternoon, which will hopefully be packed with cool footage. The new title seems to have been adopted because casual moviegoers were wondering if it was another remake of 1960s Avengers TV show.

Just one question though, why in the poster is Chris Evans about 25ft tall?

Here’s the amended official synopsis: ‘Marvel Studios presents “Marvel Avengers Assemble”—the Super Hero team up of a lifetime, featuring iconic Marvel Super Heroes Iron Man, The Incredible Hulk, Thor, Captain America, Hawkeye and Black Widow. When an unexpected enemy emerges that threatens global safety and security, Nick Fury, Director of the international peacekeeping agency known as S.H.I.E.L.D., finds himself in need of a team to pull the world back from the brink of disaster. Spanning the globe, a daring recruitment effort begins.

Starring Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner and Samuel L. Jackson, and directed by Joss Whedon, “Marvel Avengers Assemble” is based on the ever-popular Marvel comic book series “The Avengers,” first published in 1963 and a comics institution ever since. Prepare yourself for an exciting event movie, packed with action and spectacular special effects, when “Marvel Avengers Assemble” hits UK cinemas on April 26, 2012.’

Ewen Bremner Joins Joon-ho Bong’s Snow Piercer

February 28, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Korean director director Joon-ho Bong made his name with the likes of The Host and Mother in his native country. Now he’s putting together his English-language debut, Snow Piercer, and he’s getting a very good cast to help.

The latest to sign up, according to Variety, is Trainspotting’s Ewen Bremner, who joins Chris Evans, Tilda Swinton, Jamie Bell, John Hurt, Kang-ho Song and recent Oscar winner Octavia Spencer.

The story is set in a world covered in snow and ice, with a group of characters stranded on a train dubbed the Snow Piercer, who all struggle to co-exist. Ewen Bremner will play a father who helps Chris Evans’ character find his kidnapped son.

Joon-ho Bong is directing from a script he co-wrote with Kelly Masterson (Before the Devil Knows You’re Dead), with Chan-wook Park producing. It isn’t known when it will start shooting.

Horrible Bosses Writers Directing Vacation Reboot

February 28, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

It’s already tough to know how John Francis Daley manages to find the time to play Dr. Sweets on Bones and be part of an in demand writing team, along with Jonathan M. Goldstein, but now he’s going to direct a film as well. THR reports Daley and Goldstein have signed up to direct New Line Cinema’s reboot of the Vacation franchise.

The original, which starred Chevy Chase, Beverly D’Angelo, Anthony Michael Hall and Dana Barron, followed the Griswold family’s cross-country drive to the Wally World theme park, which proved to be much more arduous than they’d anticipated. The reboot will centre Rusty Griswold, the son from the original film, who’s now a grown man and decides to take his own wife and kids on a road trip to Wally World before it closes forever. Chevy Chase is expected to be a part of the film, playing his role as Clark Griswold, now a grandfather.

Daley and Goldstein scored a significant hit writing Horrible Bosses, and are also involved with upcoming New Line projects Horrible Bosses 2 and Burt Wonderstone.

John Lee Hancock To Direct Saving Mr. Banks

February 28, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

A few days ago is was revealed that Disney was busy tying up the rights to the script Saving Mr. Banks, with Tom Hanks rumored to play Walt Disney and Meryl Streep as P.L. Travers. Now Deadline reports that Blind Side helmer John Lee Hancock is in early negotiations to direct.

The project tells the story of how Walt Disney waged a 14-year courtship to persuade Australian author P.L. Travers to sell him rights to make a film out of Mary Poppins. The author felt incredibly protective over her story of a nanny with magical powers, which reflected hardships in her own life and her relationship with her father, who died when she was seven. Disney finally convinced her to let him make the film, but she was apparently less than pleased with the animated portions of the finished film.

It’s not known when the movie will shoot, but it seems Disney is moving fast to put all the pieces in place.

The Vow Director Michael Sucsy Takes On Beach Boys Musical

February 28, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Michael Sucsy has scored a significant hit with The Vow after cutting his teeth as the helmer of the award-winning TV movie, Grey Gardens. Now he’s busy lining up his next movies. He’s already got a new take on Romeo & Juliet, called Rosaline, up his sleeve, and now Variety reports that he’s in talks to direct a jukebox musical based around the Beach Boys tunes.

Fox 2000 won a bidding war back in 2010 for the rights to the project, which comes with a script by Erin Brockovich’s Susannah Grant. Not too much is known about the plot, other that that it’ll take place during one summer in the 1960s (we could probably have guessed that).

Producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron, who’ve helped get Chicago and Hairspray to the big screen, are the guys behind the project, and despit Sucsy’s lack of musical experience, they hope he’s the guy who can turn the Beach Boy’s music into a successful film.

Sony Gets Its Own Dracula Project

February 28, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

In the latest case of ‘me too’ in Hollywood, Sony Pictures has acquired a pitch from screenwriter Jason Keller (Machine Gun Preacher, Mirror Mirror), which will delve into the origins of Bram Stoker’s legendary vampiric creation, Dracula.

Deadline reports that Little is known about the untitled project, except that Sony plans to make this a period piece. Joe Roth and Palak Patel will produce, although no director is attached at this time. The project brings together the writer and producers of both Snow White movies hitting theaters this year. Keller wrote Mirror Mirror, while Joe Roth and Palak Patel produced Snow White and the Huntsman.

This new Dracula project is just the latest in a string of movies in development that centre on the famed vampire. Earlier this month Universal Pictures revived Dracula Year Zero, and Warner Bros. has Harker, which stars Russell Crowe as a Scotland Yard detective obsessed with finding Dracula. There are also a few others, although little has been heard about them for a while.
