Porn Producers Threaten To Leave LA If Law Forces Them To Use Condoms

January 20, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Well, it’s sort of film news, so we thought we’d include it! A couple of days ago, the Los Angeles City Council vote 9-1 to approve a law requiring condom use by porn performers, gay and straight. As the US porn industry is very much centred on LA (it’s believed 90% of US hardcore porn movies are made in the city), it could essentially mean an end to ‘barebacking’ for the major ‘erotic movie’ producers – if they stay in the city, that is.

The vote came after much lobbying from both sides, with porn producers saying their audience doesn’t want condoms and being forced to use them would destroy their business. They say consumers, particularly those overseas, have made it clear they won’t watch films when the actors use condoms, complaining that it is distracting and ruins the fantasy.

The pro-condom side says that not using them in porn is encouraging people not to use them in real-life, especially young people, and despite the extensive testing of performers, it potentially exposes them to STDs. It’s also true that technically Californian law already requires the use of condoms, with this law essentially being about enforcing that (it’s generally been ignored up to now), by denying film permits to production not using condoms.

Following the vote, rather than calming down and realising that perhaps the use of condom isn’t just responsible but won’t destroy the world of porn, the Washington Post reports several producers are now threatening to leave LA.

“It’s going to be interesting to see how in fact they do try to enforce it and who’s going to fund it, and all of the time and effort they’re going to spend,” said Steven Hirsch, co-founder and co-chairman of Los Angeles-based Vivid, one of the largest makers of erotic movies. “Ultimately I think what they will find is people will just stop shooting in the city of Los Angeles,” added Hirsch. “That’s a given.”

The measure now has to go to Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa to be endorsed before it becomes law.

Resident Evil: Retribution Teaser Trailer

January 20, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

This teaser for Resident Evil: Retribution may be the most shameless ever, as half of it is literally a plug for various Sony products. You can understand companies wanting corporate synergy, but this is a little ridiculous. At least it allows time for 30 seconds of footage from the movie, which looke like, well, a Resident Evil movie.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘The Umbrella Corporation’s deadly T-virus continues to ravage the Earth, transforming the global population into legions of the flesh eating Undead. The human race’s last and only hope, ALICE (Milla Jovovich), awakens in the heart of Umbrella’s most clandestine operations facility and unveils more of her mysterious past as she delves further into the complex. Without a safe haven, Alice continues to hunt those responsible for the outbreak; a chase that takes her from Tokyo to New York, Washington, D.C. and Moscow, culminating in a mind-blowing revelation that will force her to rethink everything that she once thought to be true. Aided by newfound allies and familiar friends, Alice must fight to survive long enough to escape a hostile world on the brink of oblivion. The countdown has begun.’

Atlantis Set To Rise Again For Platinum Studios

January 20, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Platinum Studios Inc. chairman Scott Mitchell Rosenberg and producer Mark Canton (300: Battle of Artemisia, Immortals) announced today that they are immediately putting the Platinum Studios comic book Atlantis Rising into development for a new, ongoing film franchise. Atlantis Rising is just one of the titles in Platinum Studios’ international library of thousands of comic book characters which it adapts, produces, and licenses for all forms of media.

Created by Scott Mitchell Rosenberg, Atlantis Rising was first published as a five-issue mini-series that had been previously optioned to DreamWorks. Platinum Studios recently regained the production rights, allowing them to reboot the series and to team up with Mark Canton. The film is set against an undersea civilisation that began over 10,000 years ago, and whose presence is unknown to the surface population.

“Atlantis Rising has the franchise potential of Men In Black, which I green lit for Scott Mitchell Rosenberg while at Sony’s Columbia TriStar Motion Picture Companies,” says Mark Canton. “I’m looking forward to bringing it to the screen with Platinum as a dynamic, state of the art action thriller.”

“Atlantis Rising is a provocative sci-fi thriller that at its core brings up the question: whose planet is this?” adds Scott Mitchell Rosenberg. “We hope to duplicate that achievement after the enormous success of the Men In Black franchise.” (Source: Variety)

Jim Broadbent & Imogen Poots Delving Into Irvine Welsh’s Filth

January 20, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Last August it was reported that James McAvoy, Jamie Bell and Alan Cumming were set for key roles in an adaptation of Irvine Welsh’s novel, Filth. Now it appears Cumming may be out (possibly replaced with John Sessions), and Variety reports that Jim Broadbent, Eddie Marsan, Joanne Froggatt and Imogen Poots have come onboard.

It isn’t certain who the actors will play, but the book is about Bruce Robertson (McAvoy), a sex-obsessed, cocaine-addicted, bigoted Edinburgh cop who is supposed to be investigating a murder but gets sidetracked by his own hangups, mainly revolving around his rather extreme sex life.

The author will produce, while Jon S. Baird will direct. Baird apparently got the job behind the camera after impressing Irvine with his feature debut, Cass.

James Marsden, Thomas Jane & Billy Bob Thornton Set To Fights Bears!

January 20, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Surely there can’t be anything more manly than fighting a bear? It appears James Marsden, Thomas Jane and Billy Bob Thornton don’t think so, as they’ve signed up to do just that in Red Machine, from Saw V director David Hackl.

According to Variety, the film is about two estranged brothers (Marsden and Jane) who make amends in the remote wilderness with their respective girlfriends. However, their freshly repaired bond is threatened when they’re attacked and stalked by a grizzly bear nicknamed the Red Machine. Thornton will star as a “legendary bear expert and hunter” who presumably helps the boys out of their predicament (or gets killed to highlight what a badass bear this is).

There seems to be a bit of a man vs. nature theme in Hollywood at the moment, with a couple of shark attack pics doing the rounds, Liam Neeson against wolves in the upcoming The Grey and now nasty bears!

Kurylenko & Riseborough Join Joseph Kosinski Sci-Fi Movie

January 20, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

A couple of months ago it appeared Jessica Chastain was set to star opposite Tom Cruise in Joseph Kosinki’s upcoming sci-fi flick, which was previously titled Oblivion (and for a brief time Horizons). Now she’s out and Variety reports that Olga Kurylenko and Andrea Riseborough are in.

The film follows a futuristic soldier called Jack, who’s one of the few people stationed on Earth after surface of the planet was destroyed by aliens. When he discovers a mysterious woman in a crash-landed pod, it sets off a chain of events that cause him to question everything he knows.

It’s been previously reported that the two main female roles are Jack’s right-hand-man, Victoria, who acts as his eyes and ears on his repair mission, and Julia, who was his fiancee before the alien invasion. It isn’t clear which of those roles the actresses have signed up for.

Jessica Chastain had to pass on the role to pursue Kathryn Bigelow’s untitled Osama bin Laden. It isn’t certainly when the film will shoot.

Best Look Yet At Johnny Depp In Tim Burton’s Dark Shadows

January 20, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

With Dark Shadows due out in May, the hype machine is gradually building up, in the hope that it’ll be a big breakout hit. Now a new image has arrived, giving us our best look yet at Johnny Depp’s vampiric Barnabas Collins.

Here’s the synopsis of the film, which is based on a 1960s supernatural US soap opera: ‘In the year 1752, Joshua and Naomi Collins, with young son Barnabas, set sail from Liverpool, England to start a new life in America. But even an ocean was not enough to escape the mysterious curse that has plagued their family. Two decades pass and Barnabas (Johnny Depp) has the world at his feet—or at least the town of Collinsport, Maine. The master of Collinwood Manor, Barnabas is rich, powerful and an inveterate playboy…until he makes the grave mistake of breaking the heart of Angelique Brouchard (Eva Green). A witch, in every sense of the word, Angelique dooms him to a fate worse than death: turning him into a vampire, and then burying him alive.

‘Two centuries later, Barnabas is inadvertently freed from his tomb and emerges into the very changed world of 1972. He returns to Collinwood Manor to find that his once-grand estate has fallen into ruin. The dysfunctional remnants of the Collins family have fared little better, each harboring their own dark secrets. Matriarch Elizabeth Collins Stoddard (Michelle Pfeiffer) has called upon live-in psychiatrist, Dr. Julia Hoffman (Helena Bonham Carter), to help with her family troubles.

‘Also residing in the manor is Elizabeth’s ne’er-do-well brother, Roger Collins (Jonny Lee Miller); her rebellious teenage daughter Carolyn Stoddard (Chloe Moretz); and Roger’s precocious 10-year-old son, David Collins (Gulliver McGrath). The mystery extends beyond the family, to caretaker Willie Loomis, played by Jackie Earle Haley, and David’s new nanny, Victoria Winters, played by Bella Heathcote.’

Kristen Wiig May Star Alongside Ben Stiller In Walter Mitty

January 20, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

A remake of The Secret Life Of Walter Mitty has been in the works for year, with all sorts of people attached at various stages. However now it looks like it’s finally going to shoot, with Ben Stiller in the title role and a spring shoot planned. Stiller’s going to need some co-stars though, and THR reports Kristen Wiig is gearing up to the remake of the 1947 comedy classic.

Originally based on a short story by James Thurber, this updated version revolves around a shy magazine photo editor who gets lost in the world of his own fantastical daydreams. He finds himself on a real-life adventure when he goes searching for a missing negative. Kristen Wiig will play a co-worker, someone who often plays a key role in Walter Mitty’s fantasies, and thus comes to help him on his seemingly inconsequential quest.

The Secret Life of Walter Mitty will finally begin shooting this April in New York City and Iceland.

GLAAD Announces The Nominees For Its Annual Media Awards

January 19, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

GLAAD (Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation), America’s foremost lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender  media advocacy and anti-defamation organisation, has announced the nominees for its 23rd Annual Media Awards. The gongs are handed out for all different types of media, ranging from film and tv to theatre, journalism and even blogs.

On the film front, they realise that many gay movies get tiny releases and so to make things a bit more interesting, they split the awards between movies with LGBT content that got a wide release and those given limited releases. Albert Nobbs, Beginners and J. Edgar got the nomination for Outstanding FIlm – Wide Release, while Circumstance, Gun Hill Road, Pariah, Tomboy and Britain’s own Weekend are up for Outstanding Film – Limited release.

Mike Thompson, GLAAD’s Acting President, commented, “As media continue to tell new stories about LGBT people and families, a majority of Americans now support full equality of LGBT Americans. This year’s nominees enlighten and entertain, while spotlighting the diversity of our community. Audiences expect to see their own worlds reflected in media, and today more than ever, those include the lives of LGBT people. Viewers know that LGBT characters and stories are simply natural extensions of, and glimpses into, their own experiences from across America.”

GLAAD certainly likes holding awards ceremonies, as The GLAAD Media Awards will be held in New York on March 24, 2012 at the Marriott Marquis in Times Square; in Los Angeles on April 21 at the Westin Bonaventure; and in San Francisco on June 2 at San Francisco Marriott Marquis.

London Film Critics Circle Gives Breakthrough Award To Weekend’s Andrew Haigh

January 19, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Although BAFTA should be hanging its head in shame for not even including Weekend on the longlist for any of its awards, the movie can take some solace from the fact the London Film Critics Circle has better taste, giving the film’s director, Andrew Haigh, the Breakthough British Film-maker award at its ceremony.

Weekend’s star, Tom Cullen, was nominated for Actor Of The Year, but lost out to Jean Dujardin in the night’s big winner, The Artist, which picked up three awards, getting Film Of The Year and Director Of The Year too. Weekend, about a one-night stand between two men that turns into something longer, may be getting shut out of the major awards, but those bodies with more discerning tastes are certainly giving the film its due.
