First Photo From Judd Apatow’s This Is 40 & Adam Sandler’s Donny’s Son

January 17, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

The first images have arrived online for a couple of films that are hoping to be this year’s big comedy hits – This Is 40 and Donny’s Son. The pic above is our first look at This Is 40, Judd Apatow’s Knocked Up spin-off, which focuses on Paul Rudd and Leslie Mann’s married couple, Pete and Debiie. The two children in the image are Maude Apatow and Iris Apatow, Judd’s real-life daughters, who play Pete and Debbie’s two kids in the movie. Not too much is known about the plot, other than it’ll be a coming-of-midlife dramedy. The film is currently set for UK release on December 21st.

Below is the first image from Donny’s Son, previously known as I Hate You, which pairs former Saturday Night Live cast member Adam Sandler with current SNL-er Andy Samberg as a father and son who don’t quite see eye-to-eye. Sandler dad-character moves in with his son right before his wedding and soon begins sparring with his prospective daughter-in-law. It’s due out September 7th.

Abigail Spencer Joins Joss Whedon Produced In Your Eyes

January 17, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

It appears Mad Men star Abigail Spencer has lined herself up a role to star in the supernatural romance In Your Eyes, which has been written by Joss Whedon, who is also producing, according to Vulture.

Speaking to Spencer at the Art of Elysium gala in Los Angeles at the weekend, Vulture got the actress to confirm that she was set to star in the film, which she describes as, “It’s the most romantic film in the history of time. It’s a supernatural romance.”

Brin Hill is directing the low-budget movie, which centres on two people who are preternaturally or supernaturally connected, despite being polar opposites. The movie is being made by Whedon’s Bellwether production company, which he set up to make micro-budget features outside the studio machine. Joss’ first film for the company is a new version of Much Ado About Nothing, which he directed towards the end of last year.

Adam Brody Joins Some Girls and Welcome to the Jungle

January 17, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Since The O.C. ended, we haven’t heard too much from Adam Brody, but now Variety reports he’s in negotiations for the lead role in an adaptation of the play Some Girls by writer-producer Neil LaBute, which will be directed by Jennifer Getzinger, and he has also joined Welcome to the Jungle.

Some Girls is about a successful writer who, before getting married, decides to travel across the country to meet his five ex-girlfriends in a series of hotel rooms. Production will begin in April in Los Angeles. Robert Meltzer’s Welcome to the Jungle meanwhile follows a group of staffers at a design firm who go on an office retreat to a tropical island, where total chaos erupts after they become stranded. A Lord of the Flies-type situation unfolds, and Adam Brody’s character is forced to match wits with the power-hungry leader in order to rescue his co-workers.

Rob Huebel, Dennis Haysbert, Kristen Schaal and Jean-Claude Van Damme will co-star in Welcome To The Jungle, which starts shooting next month in Puerto Rico.

Writer Simon Beaufoy Confirmed For Hunger Games Sequel Catching Fire

January 17, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

The Hunger Games may not have been released yet, but Lionsgate has already set a release date for the sequel, and so work’s already well underway on Catching Fire. The presumption has been that writer Simon Beaufoy and director Gary Ross would return, and now TheWrap has confirmed that.

Ross had apparently wanted to write the script himself, but post-production work on Hunger Games meant that was impossible. As a result Beaufoy is currently at work writing Catching Fire, under Gary Ross’ supervision. Hunger Games stars Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson are already tied in to return as Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark.

It isn’t known when production may begin on Catching Fire, but it’s been slated for release on November 22, 2013.

Total Recall Official Synopsis Revealed

January 17, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

There’s been a bit of confusion over the remake of Total Recall, with some saying it would still involve the main character going to Mars, other that the Red Planet was out, with most hedging their bets on what was going on. However now the official synopsis has dropped, and it appears that Mars is indeed out, with things staying earthbound this time around.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Total Recall is an action thriller about reality and memory, inspired anew by the famous short story “We Can Remember It For You Wholesale” by Philip K. Dick. Welcome to Rekall, the company that can turn your dreams into real memories. For a factory worker named Douglas Quaid (Colin Farrell), even though he’s got a beautiful wife (Kate Beckinsale) who he loves, the mind-trip sounds like the perfect vacation from his frustrating life – real memories of life as a super-spy might be just what he needs. But when the procedure goes horribly wrong, Quaid becomes a hunted man. Finding himself on the run from the police – controlled by Chancellor Cohaagen (Bryan Cranston), the leader of the free world – Quaid teams up with a rebel fighter (Jessica Biel) to find the head of the underground resistance (Bill Nighy) and stop Cohaagen. The line between fantasy and reality gets blurred and the fate of his world hangs in the balance as Quaid discovers his true identity, his true love, and his true fate.’

It sounds kind of like the Schwarzenegger version, but not really, but it could well be a decent film. The Len Wiseman directed movie arrives in cinemas in August.

Contraband Tops The US MLK Weekend Box Office

January 17, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Although Martin Luther King Day is a four day weekend in the US, it isn’t one of the particularly big holidays for cinema-going. That said, the Mark Wahlberg starring Contraband did pretty well, scoring a $28.8 million debut to top the chart.

It beat out the 3D re-release of Beauty and The Beast, which made $23.5 million. Although not as big as the opening of The Lion King a few months ago, considering that the film (including the 3D version) has been available to buy of DVD and Blu-ray for ages – unlike Lion King – it’s a pretty impressive take.

The only other new entry was the Dolly Parton and Queen Latifah starring Joyful Noise, which took the number four spot with $13.7 million. Outside the top 10, The Iron Lady got a big boost when it expanded from five to 800 screens, taking $6.4 million and finishing in 11th place on the chart.

Take a look below for the US box office top 10 for the weekend of January 13th-16th:

Rank Title Weekend Gross (millions) Total Gross to date (millions)
1 Contraband $28.8 $28.8
2 Beauty and the Beast $23.5 $23.5
3 Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol $14.2 $189.5
4 Joyful Noise $13.7 $13.7
5 Sherlock Holmes: A Game Of Shadows $10.5 $172.1
6 The Devil Inside $9.1 $47.5
7 The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo $8.1 $89.2
8 Alvin & the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked $7.8 $120.8
9 War Horse $7.1 $67.3
10 We Bought A Zoo $6.8 $65.2

BAFTA Nominations Announced – Including one for Christopher Plummer playing gay

January 17, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

It’s not often an awards body is criticised for its choices before the nominees are announced, but this year BAFTA has been, after they released their longlist last week, which missed off things such as the much loved by critics but very small gay indie movie, Weekend.

However now we have the final nominations, which are less likely to cause controversy, even if many will feel some of the best of the year have been missed out. The Artist leads the way with 12 nominations, which after its success at the Golden Globes, must make it the frontrunner for the Oscars. Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy – which has been notable by its absence at other awards ceremonies – is nominated in 11 categories, Hugo has nine nominations, My Week with Marilyn has six and The Help and War Horse are each nominated five times.

Alongside The Artist and Tinker, The Descendants, The Help and Drive will compete for Best Film, with many already noting that The Iron Lady was snubbed in that category (although it did get a nod for Meryl Streep and Jim Broadbent’s performances, as well as for Original Screenplay). It’s odd Abi Morgan would get nominated for the much criticised Iron Lady screenplay, but not for her stirling work on Shame, although at least Michael Fassbender will be representing that movie in the Best Actor category.

The lack of Iron Lady noms also means that lesbian director Phylidda Lloyd missed out, but representing the LGBT side, as he has been throughout the awards season, is Christopher Plummer, whose been nominated in the Best Supporting Actor category for playing gay in Beginners. Glenn Close didn’t pick up a nomination for her much praised performance as a woman living as a man in Albert Nobbs though, surprising many, although bisexual Tilda Swinton was nominated for Best Actress for We Need To Talk About Kevin. Pedro Almodovar scored a nomination for The Skin I Live In, in the Film Not In The English Language category.

However perhaps the strongest category overall is outstanding debut by a British writer, director or producer, with four of the nominees best known as actors/performers, competing for their very good debut directorial efforts. They include Joe Cornish for Attack The Block, Ralph Fiennes for Coriolanus, Richard Ayoade for Submarine and Paddy Considine for Tyrannosaur.

Weekend Picks Up Best Film At Gay and Lesbian Critics Awards

January 16, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

GALECA, the Gay and Lesbian Entertainment Critics Association, has announced the winners of its Dorian Awards, giving Best Film Of The Year to the more than deserving Weekend. As everyone loves the movies but it’s getting shut out by bigger movies at other award ceremonies (it’s still shocking it didn’t make it onto the BAFTA longlist in any category), it’s great GALECA has recognised it.

Other winners include Meryl Streep for Film Performance of the Year for her portrayal of Margaret Thatcher in The Iron Lady (perhaps if the critics knew more about Maggie’s record on gay rights they wouldn’t have been as kind), as well as Michael Fassbender, who picked up the ‘We’re Wilde About You Rising Star of the Year’ award.

The excellent We Were Here, about the AIDS epidemic in San Francisco, won both Best Documentary and Best LGBT-Themed Documentary Of The Year. Another great choice was 50/50, which was given Unsung Film of the year.

On the TV side, the LGBT friendly American Horror Story and Modern Family won in the Best TV drama and comedy categories, while Modern Family picked up LGBT-themed TV show of the year as well. GALECA also gave out gongs for Campy (Intentional Or Not) Film and TV show of the year, with The Muppets and Revenge getting the awards.

The may like quirky categories, but GALECA seems to make a lot more sensible choices than most awards bodies! For more info about GALECA, head to their website.

Turkish Film ZENNE Dancer Hopes To Highlight Gay Honour Killings

January 16, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

When honour killings are mentioned on the news, it’s normally in terms of women who have supposedly ‘dishonoured’ their family by falling in love with the wrong person or refusing to marry the person their family dictates. However a new Turkish movie, ZENNE Dancer, hopes to highlight the problem of gay honour killings and homophobia in the country.

Co-directors Mehmet Binay and Caner Alper (who came out as a gay couple of 14 years at the film’s premiere) took inspiration from the tragic death of 26-year-old Ahmet Yildiz, a close friend, who they claim was murdered in 2008 by his own father for being gay. CNN reports that Yildez was fatally injured after being attacked while leaving a cafe near the Bosphorus strait. The 26-year-old was studying physics and had represented his country in a LGBT gathering in San Francisco in 2007. Court records have identified Yildez’ father as the main suspect although he remains at large.

Alper said before he died, Yildiz often spoke about receiving death threats from his family, who were trying to “cure” him of his homosexuality. The filmmakers said they hoped their film would force Turkish society to debate hate crimes that target victims based on gender, religion, ethnicity or sexual identity. “Death and murder is still on the agenda of our country. We can’t get rid of this mentality,” said Binay. “People need to tolerate each other. They need to understand that different identities can live next to each other without disturbing each other.”

While Yildez’s murder became the first gay honour killing publicised in the country, it’s certainly not the first ever. A recent case of a transsexual murdered by her brother has also highlighted the issue.

However, Binay points to what he calls remarkable progress for minority rights in Turkey over the last decade. He said: “All sorts of minorities including gays and lesbians are demanding their rights. They want recognition, they want protection by the state. They want to be able to live, first of all, and not be murdered.”

ZENNE Dancer has found success at film festivals, including winning five awards as Turkey’s Antalya Golden Orange Film Festival.

You can find out more about ZENNE Dancer at its official website and watch the trailer below.

Vietnamese Gay Love Story Film Lost In Paradise Hopes To Change Attitudes

January 16, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

While gay people face problems in the west, it’s easy to forget things are very different in other countries, where society is either openly hostile to homosexuality or ignores it to the point of gay people being (and feeling) invisible. However a new Vietnamese movie is hoping to change attitudes to gay people in that country.

Lost in Paradise is about the doomed love affair between a gay prostitute and a book seller and provides a rare glimpse into a usually hidden side of Vietnam. The AFP reports that the movie has proven a success, with cinemagoers flocking to watch the movie.

While some people have laughed or been squeamish about the movie’s same-sex tenderness it has changed some people’s attitudes. One 50-year-old state employee who caught a screening in Hanoi commented, “Now I think they are just like us.”

Homosexuality remains largely taboo in communist Vietnam, where traditional Confucian social mores dominate. Gay people are routinely portrayed as comical figures or as people suffering from a condition that can be treated — something the makers of Lost in Paradise hope to help change.

“We just want to contribute so that gays are better accepted in our society. They don’t need sympathy or understanding. They need equality”, said Luong Manh Hai, who stars in the movie and co-wrote the script.

The country still has a long way to go on gay acceptance, but films like this are making an impact. The movie will screen at the Berlin Film Festival in February.

However perhaps the final word should go to Nguyen Quoc Duy, an openly gay 21-year-old student who remarks, “I don’t know if the movie succeeded in telling people that being gay is normal, but for sure it helped them understand who we really are and how wrong the prejudice they have against us is.”
