BAFTA Awards Longlist Revealed

January 6, 2012 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

It’s just over a month until the BAFTA Film Awards are handed out on Sunday February 12th, and a couple weeks until the nominations are announced on January 17th. Ahead of that, BAFTA has released the longlist of potential nominees in each category.

The list has already sparked controversy for including the likes of the tepidly received Iron Lady and My Week With Marilyn in Best Film, while missing out Shame. Much acclaimed gay indie hit Weekend wasn’t longlisted in any category. Apparently Arthur Christmas was one of the 15 Best British movies of the year, but Weekend wasn’t, despite winning several film festival awards and ending up on a slew on critics best of 2011 lists.

Weekend’s snub is undoubtedly a result of the fact that while major awards ceremony like to pat themselves on the back for recognising smaller films, they’re actually heavily weighted towards the mainstream, irrespective of the quality of the actual movies. Without the weight of a major (studio-backed) distributor who has big pockets to launch an expensive campaign for a movie, it’s very tough to get a look in (and let’s not forgot most of those voting are heavily tied into the mainstream Brit filmmaking community).

So how is the longlist produced? According to BAFTA, ‘The Longlist is the result of Round One voting by members of the Academy. With 285 films entered this year, the first round of voting reduced the list of eligible films to 15 in each category. Round Two voting, which opens today, will reduce these 15 contenders down to the five nominations in each category. Appearing on the Longlist does not constitute a nomination.

‘Over 6300 members of the Academy vote in three rounds to decide the Longlist, Nominations and Winners. All members vote in the first two rounds for all categories barring Documentary, Film Not in the English Language and Outstanding British Film, which are voted for by Chapters. The asterisks in the Longlist denote the top five selection of the relevant Chapter. In the final round, winners are voted for by specialist Chapters in all categories except for Best Film, Outstanding British Film, Documentary and Film Not in the English Language and the four performance categories, which are voted for by all members.’

We’ve included the longlists for Best Actress, Best Actor, and Best Film below, but if you want to see all the categories, you can get them in PDF form by clicking here.

Liam Hemsworth & Dwayne Johnson Circling Empire State

January 6, 2012 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

Who’s gonna end up the biggest of the Hemsworth brothers? Chris overtook Liam’s early lead thanks to Thor, but the younger brother is hitting back this year with the likes of the Hunger Games and The Expendables 2 (while Chris will be saving the world in The Avengers). Now Liam’s got another project he’s hoping will push him up the fame ladder – Empire State.

Deadline reports that Liam Hemsworth is finalising a deal to star in the movie for director Dito Montiel, with Dwayne Johnson in talks for another role as well. Adam Mazer (Breach) wrote the screenplay, based on the true story of a 1982 armored car company robbery in New York City. At the time the heist was believed to be the largest in US history.

Liam Hemsworth will play Chris, and Dwayne Johnson is portraying Ransone, although no further details have been given about their characters. Production is scheduled to begin in April.

First Pic Of Jeremy Renner In The Bourne Legacy

January 6, 2012 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

The Bourne Legacy seems to have been in the works for eons, but now it’s definitely on the way as we have the first official picture from the movie (via USA Today). However, while the picture has arrived to help get people excited for this new Matt Damon-less Bourne installment, there’s still very little news on the plot, other than that Jeremy Renner will play another agent produced by the programme that resulted in Jason Bourne. We do at least now have his character name – Aaron Cross.

Rachel Weisz, Edward Norton, Oscar Isaac, Joan Allen, Albert Finney, Stacy Keach and Scott Glenn, with Tony Gilroy writing and directing. It’s due in the UK on August 17th, 2012.

Emma Stone Wants A Little White Corvette

January 6, 2012 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

Emma Stone is one of the few actresses to come along in recent years who looks like she could have a long and illustrious career at the top of the movie game. She’s currently got her pick of projects and it appear she’s settled on one called Little White Corvette, as Deadline reports she’s signed up for the movie.

Michael Diliberti (30 Minutes or Less, Stop Loss) wrote the screenplay, which landed on the 2001 Black List of the best unproduced screenplays. It centres on a nerd and his older sister as they head to Miami to try and sell $1 million worth of cocaine that they found in their late father’s sports car. It is said that Emma Stone has been interested in the project since last summer.

Production is said to begin in late summer, although they’ll need to find a director before then.

Matt Damon Backs Out Of Directorial Debut

January 6, 2012 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

For almost a year now Matt Damon has been keen to become a director. After flirting with a couple projects, in October he set up his directorial debut at Warner, with an untitled drama he co-wrote with The Office’s John Krasinski, based on a concept he developed with Dave Eggers.

However, now Vulture reports that Damon is stepping away from this project as a director, but perhaps oddly, it appears he’s still set to star in the film. Story details have been slim, but the screenplay revolves around a salesman who moves to a small town, only to be met with disdain from the locals.

It’s not known exactly why Matt left the director’s seat, although there are rumours that he has issues with the script (although if that’s true, it seem odd he’s still willing to star in the movie). It’s not certain though whether Warner will go ahead with the $12 million movie is Matt drops out entirely.

Akira Production Offices Shut Down

January 6, 2012 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

With 2011 seeing a drop in both cinema revenues and attendance, studios are looking extra hard at what they spend their money on. While getting the greenlight normally means everything is going full steam ahead, in recent months even those movies nearing production have been reviewed, with some, such as The Lone Ranger, being shut down while the budget was tightened (that movie has since restarted and will shoot imminently).

Now it’s happened to another movie – the live-action version of Akira. The film’s already gone from being the originally planned two films costing over $100 million each to a single movie costing $90 million, but now Warner wants it to cost even less.

The studio has halted pre-production on Akira, shutting down the Vancouver offices, according to THR. Although the film has gone through an extensive series of rewrites, its believed that a new writer will be brought on to completely overhaul the screeplay. Akira isn’t dead though. Warner Bros. is insistent that Akira become a live action film, no matter how badly fans of the original don’t want it.

Whether the delay will affect the casting isn’t known. Garrett Hedlund is currently signed in the lead as Kaneda, with the studio eyeing both Michael Pitt and Dane DeHaan to play his best friend Tetsuo. Jaume Collet-Serra (Unknown) is still set to direct this adaptation. While the movie will move forward at some point in the near future, there is no telling when the pre-production offices will re-open for business.

Justin Timberlake ‘Very Seriously’ Considering Playing Elton John In Biopic

January 5, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

A couple of days ago we reported that Elton John is still busy at work on a biopic of his life and that, “I’ve got a wish list of people. Number one on my wishlist is Justin Timberlake, because he played me before in a David LaChapelle video of Rocket Man and he was superb.”

At the time though it wasn’t certain whether anyone has spoken to Justin about it or how interested the singer turned actor might be. Now E!Online has got word from Timberlake’s camp, with a source saying, “Justin is taking it very seriously. He’s working with his people to figure out exactly how to respond.”

It’s still a long way from saying he’ll actually do it, but it’s a good indication that everything will come together.

Elton has confirmed that he’ll co-produce the film with his civil partner, David Furnish, and that it’ll be a “surreal look at my life, and not just a factual look at my life, more in the manner of a Moulin Rouge”. The singer, who’s never been averse to a bit of flamboyance, added that a “normal biopic” would be innappropriate “because my life hasn’t been like that”. There’s no info on when it might film though.

Meryl Streep Surprised She’s A Gay Icon

January 5, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Meryl Streep is an icon to a lot of people, but it appears she hadn’t realised that she was a gay icon as well. The actress, who’s won massive plaudits for playing Margaret Thatcher in The Iron Lady (out Jan 6th), says “I just recently found out I’m a gay icon from a show where they do little arias from all my movies.”

She adds, “It’s flattering of course. Whether or not Margaret is also a gay icon I don’t know. That’s a difficult one for me.” You can understand the uncertainty as while Maggie’s a strong woman, she wasn’t exactly a fan of the gays, having enacted anti-gay measures such as Section 28 and blocked legislation that backed gay equality.

Owen Wilson Thinks Freezing People is Easy

January 5, 2012 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

Earlier today we reported that Kristen Wiig doesn’t want to make a second Bridesmaids movie, but now she’s got a different project in the works, in which she’d star alongside Owen Wilson, Christopher Walken and Paul Rudd (who’s been attached since last year).

The film is Errol Morris’ Freezing People Is Easy, based on Robert F. Nelson‘s memoir We Froze the First Man and a This American Life segment titled You’re as Cold as Ice. Zach Helm is on screenplay duties for the fact based tale about Nelson, a TV repairman who attempted to devise his own method of cryogenic perservation in the 1960s. Things don’t go quite as planned, and Nelson winds up having to apologise to the families of those he’s tried and failed to freeze.

Rudd is in line for the central role, but it isn’t certain who the others will be. However Deadline believes they’re all pretty much locked in for the film, presuming the shoot stays on schedule for the middle of the year.

Prepare Yourself For Horrible Bosses 2

January 5, 2012 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

Horrible Bosses took $209 million worldwide and only cost $35 million to make, so it’s not that surprising that New Line wants a follow-up. That sequel is now moving forwards, as THR reports that original writers John Francis Daley (aka Dr. Sweets from TV’s Bones) and Jonathan M. Goldstein have signed deals to write the sequel, with stars Jason Bateman, Charlie Day, and Jason Sudeikis all expected to return.

The studio is also in talks with director Seth Gordon to helm the follow-up. The first film followed three friends (Jason Bateman, Charlie Day, and Jason Sudeikis) who are all sick of being mistreated by their bosses, and band together to kill their employers, one by one. There’s no news on the story for the sequel, although let’s hope the guys don’t just get a bunch of new asshole bosses who need killing.

It isn’t known when New Line is aiming to get this sequel into production, but it seems that all of the pieces are falling into place.
