The Imitation Game Trailers – Benedict Cumberbatch takes on Alan Turing in the BFI London Film Festival opener

July 21, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

imitation-game-slideIt’s been a case of co-ordination today, as the moment the BFI announced that The Imitation Game is set to open the 58th BFI London Film Festival, Studiocanal released the UK trailer and in the US The Weinstein Company unveiled theirs.

The movie will open the LFF with a gala screening on Wednesday 8th October at the Odeon Leicester Square, with a live cinecast from the red carpet and simultaneous screenings taking place at cinemas across the UK.

You can take a look at the trailers below.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘THE IMITATION GAME is a nail-biting race against time following Alan Turing (pioneer of modern-day computing and credited with cracking the German Enigma code) and his brilliant team at Britain’s top-secret code-breaking centre, Bletchley Park, during the darkest days of World War II. Turing, whose contributions and genius significantly shortened the war, saving thousands of lives, was the eventual victim of an unenlightened British establishment, but his work and legacy live on.

‘THE IMITATION GAME stars Benedict Cumberbatch (Star Trek Into Darkness, TV’s Sherlock) as Alan Turing and Keira Knightley (Atonement) as close friend and fellow code-breaker Joan Clarke, alongside a top notch cast including Matthew Goode (A Single Man), Mark Strong (Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy), Rory Kinnear (Skyfall), Charles Dance (Gosford Park, TV’s Game of Thrones), Allen Leech (In Fear, TV’s Downton Abbey) and Matthew Beard (An Education).’

Director Morten Tyldum comments on the LFF announcement, “I am thrilled to be returning to London to share The Imitation Game with the audience of the BFI London Film Festival. The experience of directing this film has been so tremendously rewarding, and I am humbled to share Alan’s Turing’s incredible story on Opening Night.”

Of course Turing was gay, and to be honest the trailers are unlikely to assuage those worried the film will whitewash his sexuality. Although the US trailer does make oblique reference to it, you could still easily believe Keira Knightley is going to be the film’s ‘love interest’. Many will be keeping a close eye on The Imitation Game, as the importance of Turing’s story isn’t just in cracking German codes during World War II and the fact his work helped lead to modern computers, but that after the war he was prosecuted for his sexuality, shunned and made to chemically castrate himself, which eventually led to his suicide.

To sideline that is to do a disservice to a man who may have made many more breakthroughs if he didn’t live in a society that was happy to use him to help save the country, but then destroyed him after because of their narrow view of human love.

Hopefully the trailers are the ones sidelining the issue and not the movie. We’ll have to wait and see. (Many other mainstream films with gay content ignore that aspect in trailers that cater to the masses, with the logic that you won’t turn off gay-friendly people by not including it, but you could turn off others if you do).

The movie opens across the UK on November 15th. [Read more…]

Frankie Valenti Talks To Us About His Move From Gay Porn To Indie Cinema With Tiger Orange

July 18, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Frankie Valenti in TIGER ORANGE. Photo by Lila JavanTwenty years ago if you went into porn, you’d have to give up the idea that you could ever be taken seriously in mainstream cinema – at best you might be able to become a Traci Lords of Ron Jeremy type cult figure. However times have changed.

Over the last few years Frankie Valenti – under the suitably OTT name Johnny Hazzard – has become a big name in gay porn, winning numerous adult industry awards and legions of fans who love his sexual charms. However now he’s doing something rather different, as he’s taken a co-lead role in the gay-themed indie movie, Tiger Orange, which gets its world premiere tonight at LA’s Outfest.

The film sees Valenti playing Todd, one of a pair of gay brothers. Todd is brash and open about his sexuality, which causes friction with the closeted Chet when he returns to their home town following the death of their father.

We caught up with Frankie ahead of the premiere to talk about the movie and his transition from the adult to the indie film world. [Read more…]

Zachary Quinto & Chris Zylka Will Be James Franco’s Former Lovers In Ex-Gay Activist Movie

July 15, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

zachary-quintoBack in April we reported that James Franco was once more showing off his interest in all things gay by signing up to star in a movie about Michael Glatze, who went from being an outspoken LGBT advocate to an ex-gay activist.

Now he’s got some company in the film – which is going by the simple title Michael – as Variety reports that Zachary Quinto and Chris Zyka have signed up to play two of Glatze’s former lovers, while Emma Roberts will be his girlfriend.

Glatze started out as a young gay man who was passionate about helping LGBT youth, including marching in gay rights rallies and urging young people to celebrate their non-traditional sexualities. He also launched the magazine Young Gay America after working at XY, becoming a leading voice in the gay rights fight.

However in 2004 he had a health scare involving a possible heart defect, which caused him to turn to conservative Christianity. Shortly afterwards he completely renounced everything he had previously stood for and said that he was now ‘ex-gay’. The 38-year-old is currently married to a woman.

Director Justin Kelly comments, “This isn’t just a story about an ‘ex-gay’. It’s actually a very relatable story about the power of belief and the desire to belong.”

Benoit Denizet-Lewis, who wrote the New York Times Magazine article the film is based on adds, “I’m excited that everyone involved in this project is intent on telling a story that captures the full breadth of Michael’s unusual life, from the inspiring gay leader I knew when I was young to the Christian pastor he is today.”

Laverne Cox Makes History As The First Transgender Emmy Nominee Ever

July 10, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

laverne-cox-oitnbThe rise of Orange Is The New Black’s Laverne Cox continues with the actress scoring a Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy Series Emmy nomination, which marks the first time a transgender person has ever been so honoured.

Cox’s nomination is just one of 12 the show received, with the series’ actresses dominating the comedy categories. Alongside Laverne in the Guest Actress list are Natasha Lyonne and Uzo Aduba, Kate Mulgrew is up for Best Supporting Actress and Taylor Schilling will compete for Best Actress In A Comedy Series.

It was a good year for LGBT-themed entertainment, as along with Orange Is The New Black’s noms, The Normal Heart scored major attention for its actors, as Mark Ruffalo is up for Best Actor In A Miniseries Or Movie, while in the Best Supporting Actor category it scored an incredible four of the five noms for Alfred Molina, Jim Parson, Joe Mantello and Matt Bomer. Julia Roberts also got a look in on the Supporting Actress list.

Indeed, looking through the list of Emmy nominees the vast majority of shows included in the list include gay content, from Modern Family and Game Of Thrones, to Masters Of Sex and Downton Abbey.

However, while it’s been an incredible year for Laverne Cox, topped by her Emmy nomination and being featured on the cover of Time, the actress has been talking recently about how her rise to success has come with a dark side – as more public exposure has resulted in increased attacks on her on the internet. While it has often been noted that social media has allowed transgender people to start controlling their own public stories for the first time, the flipside is that it means the entire world can answer back, and many people are both cruel and almost stunningly bigoted.

In an emotional interview with BET, Cox says, “I’ve felt it since the cover of TIME Magazine, like all of a sudden like my Twitter feed and my Instagram there’s all this negativity. I was getting Google Alerts about me [somehow being in league] with Satan.”

Exodus: Gods And Kings Trailer – Christian Bale & Joel Edgerton go head-to-head in the biblical epic

July 9, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

exodus-gods-and-kings-slideOne of this winter’s most intriguing films is Exodus: Gods And Kings, which is a big gamble for both Fox and 20th Century Fox. They are hoping that with Gladiator director Ridley Scott directing and legions of religious folks who may be interested in film about Moses, it will be a hit. However historical epics of this sort are often tough sells.

Fox is now getting the ball rolling, as after some images arrived a few days ago, we now get a first trailer, which seems keen to sell us on the scale as well as the rivalry between Christian Bale’s Moses and Joel Edgerton’s Ramses.

As you would expect, the story follows Moses, an Israelite who grew up as part of the Egyptian royal household, but who goes up against the Pharaoh Ramses so that he can lead the Israelites out of Egypt and into the Promised Land. Cue plagues, battles and at some point the Red Sea will need to be parted.

Exodus: Gods and Kings is due out in December. [Read more…]

‘Self-hating’ Bisexual Alec Guinness Begged Ian McKellen Not To Fight For Gay Rights

June 27, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

alex-guinnessBack in the 1980s, Ian McKellen came out publicly in order to protest the UK’s Section 28, which banned the ‘promotion’ of homosexuality in schools. It was a law that caused great controversy and many saw as a sharp right turn after years in which British society seemed to be slowly opening up to gay people.

However it turns out not everyone was pleased with McKellen’s decision to step forward and start fighting for gay rights. At the LGBTI Pride gala dinner held in the Lord Mayor of London’s Mansion House, McKellen told the audience, “Alec Guinness took me out to lunch and said: ‘You really should not, as a leading actor, have anything to do with anything political, especially anything as dirty as homosexuality. I beg you not to do it.’ That was self-hatred”

As with several other top actors from Guinness’ era, the Star Wars actor wasn’t purely straight (it’s believed he was bisexual), but despite plenty of evidence the press knew about, his stature meant it was rarely mentioned, even when homosexual acts were illegal. Guinness was married but is believed to have had numerous male lovers and was once arrested for having sex in a public toilet in Liverpool in 1946. Also like many LGBT people of his period, he never fully embraced his sexuality and as his comments to McKellen suggest, it was something he never really accepted even in his later years.

Guinness is though considered to be one of the great British actors of the 20th Century, and while many best remember him for Star Wars, he won a Best Actor Oscar for The Bridge on the River Kwai and appeared in the likes of Lawrence Of Arabia, The Lavender Hill Mob and Kind Hearts and Coronets. Tom Hardy & Charlize Theron Get A Mad Max Fury Road EW Cover

June 25, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

mad-max-fury-road-ew-coverAfter decades in the works, followed by more delays, casting changing, a storm that destroyed the sets and moved the shoot from Australia to South Africa and various other issues, Mad Max Fury Road finally started shooting at the end of 2012.

Despite that, the release is still almost a year away! It had better be good when it finally arrives.

Despite the fact it’s been in the can for a long time, we’ve hardly seen anything from the movie. But to show us it hasn’t been completely forgotten, as great shot of Tom Hardy and Charlize Theron for the movie has popped up on the cover of EW, which you can see above.

Director George Miller previously told /Film of the movie, ‘Mad Max is caught up with a group of people fleeing across the Wasteland in a War Rig driven by the Imperator Furiosa. This movie is an account of the Road War which follows. It is based on the Word Burgers of the History Men and eyewitness accounts of those who survived.’

Early test screenings have already taken place, and the response has reportedly been good. However most of us will have to wait until May 2015 to see it.

Channing Tatum, Ralph Fiennes & Tilda Swinton Will Hail, Caesar! Alongside George Clooney

June 24, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Channing-TatumThe Coen Brothers are going for star power with their upcoming Hail Caesar!, as they already George Clooney and Josh Brolin attached, and now THR reports they’re set to be joined by Channing Tatum, Ralph Fiennes and Tilda Swinton.

The film is about Eddie Mannix, a 1950s fixer who works for major Hollywood studios. His job is to try and keep the movie stars in line and also cover up their indiscretions.

Tatum will be ‘a Gene Kelly-type star while Fiennes would play Laurence Lorenz, a studio director, and Swinton will portray a powerful Hollywood gossip columnist’ It’s still now 100% who George Clooney and Josh Brolin are portraying at this time, although it’s believed Clooney will be Mannix.

Many of the Coens’ earlier movies harked back to Hollywood’s Golden Age and this would appear to be a return to their love of Tinsel Town in the 40s and 50s. It’s also suggested there are plenty more colourful characters in the script the Coens can find some great actors to play.
