Top Gun Director Tony Scott Dies In Apparent Suicide

August 20, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Hollywood is in shock today after it was revealed that Top Gun and True Romance director Tony Scott has died after apparently throwing himself off the Vincent Thomas Bridge in Los Angeles’ San Pedro area. The police are treating it as as a suicide, with the LA Times reporting the police found contact information inside Scott’s Toyota Prius (which was parked on the bridge), which led authorities to a suicide note in his office.

No motivation is known for the 68-year-old taking his own life.

Scott’s first film was the lesbian-themed vampire movie The Hunger in 1983, but it was his commercial work that led to his being hired for his big breakthrough, 1986’s Top Gun. While over the year many criticised his hyper-fast, quick-cut style, he had huge success, making the likes of Beverly Hills Cop II, Days Of Thunder, True Romance, Crimson Tide, Enemy Of The State, Spy Game, Man On Fire and Unstoppable.

He’s also much loved as a mentor to many other filmmakers, taking a personal interest in emerging talent and helping them get a leg up in Hollywood. He was, of course, the younger brother of Oscar-winning helmer Tony Scott, and is survived by a wife and two children.

Since news of his death broke, the Twittersphere has been filled with Tweets about the news, such Moon helmer Duncan Jones saying, ‘Just heard about Tony Scott news. Horrible… Tony was a truly lovely man who took me under his wing & ignited my passion to make films.’ Ron Howard tweeting ‘No more Tony Scott movies. Tragic day’ and Donnie Darko’s Richard Kelly adding ‘Tony Scott was the ultimate mentor – once he understood you… he released the glorious hounds of inner city research, dangerous frontiers.’

Tony Scott – 21st June 1944-19th August 2012 – RIP

Actor Ezra Miller Reveals That ‘I’m Queer’

August 16, 2012 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

19-year-old Ezra Miller sent shivers down many people’s spines with his performance as the title character in 2011’s We Need To Talk About Kevin and will soon be seen playing a gay highs school student in The Perks Of Being A Wallflower. Now, during an interview with Out, he’s revealed that he identifies as queer.

It’s not the first time he’s talked about his sexuality, as he’s previously said he’s shared intimate same sex moments during his youth, but now he’s added that, “I’m queer. I have a lot of really wonderful friends who are of very different sexes and genders. I am very much in love with no one in particular. I’ve been trying to figure out relationships, you know? I don’t know if it’s responsible for kids of my age to be so aggressively pursuing monogamous binds, because I don’t think we’re ready for them.”

“I’m just trying to make sure my lack of responsibility no longer hurts people… That’s where I’m at in the boyfriend/girlfriend/zefriend type of question.”

The articles also says, ‘As a young child, Miller was mocked for having a speech impediment, which he learned to control by singing opera. (He was in New York’s Metropolitan Opera Children’s Chorus and the premiere of Philip Glass’s White Raven.) “I was trying to kiss boys in school,” he says, and then the best friend he fooled around with turned on him. “He had some macho realization that led him to believe that I was the problem. So I went from having a stutter to being a totally gay little opera singer to being, like, a really confused queer adolescent.”

‘One of the older kids who introduced him to Perks became his girlfriend, but once she graduated, Miller felt like an outcast again. “[Bullying] does come with the territory of being a lesbian/gay/bi/queer/trans person in the public school system. And that’s been getting a little bit better, for parts of that spectrum, but not really. How far have we really come? I’m not sure. That’s up for debate.”’

The Perks Of Being A Wallflower, which also stars Logan Lerman, Paul Rudd and Emma Watson, hits US cinemas on September 14th, and will arrive in the UK on October 3rd.

Take This Waltz (Cinema)

August 16, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Michelle Williams, Seth Rogen, Luke Kirby, Sarah Silverman
Director: Sarah Polley
Running Time: 116 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: August 17th 2012

I still can’t quite believe the little girl from 1980s Canadian TV import Ramona is now all grown up and an accomplished actor, director and writer. Take This Waltz is Sarah Polley’s third movie as a director, following All I Want For Christmas and the excellent Away From Her. In some respects it’s a rather standard story – someone is tempted to cheat on their spouse when something seemingly more exciting than the dullness of everyday marriage comes along – but what make it slightly unusual is that in this one it’s the woman who’s thinking of playing away.

Michelle Williams – who’s fast become one of the most fascinating and accomplished actresses of her generation, and also oddly interested with starring in movie about the breakdown of relationships – plays Margot, who meets the dashing and rather good-looking Daniel (Luke Kirby) while on a research trip to a living-history colonial fort. Bret Easton Ellis Says Matt Bomer Is ‘Too Gay’ For Fifty Shades Of Grey Film

August 9, 2012 By Tim Isaac 2 Comments

For the last few weeks American Psycho author Bret Easton Ellis has been trying to pimp himself out to write the script for a planned movie based on Fifty Shades Of Grey. A couple of days ago, it was revealed he was off the shortlist of possible writers, and so as is Ellis’ penchant he took to Twitter.

However he wasn’t content with just saying he was sad he was no longer in contention for scripting duties, but also decided to tell the world he feels that, ‘Okay. Let’s finalize this. Matt Bomer is totally hot and a very good actor. He is NOT right for [Fifty Shades’] Christian Grey and it [his being gay] complicates the role’. He then added, ‘I don’t care how good an actor you are but being married to another man complicates things for playing CG.’

This has sparked off lots of accusation of Ellis being a self-loathing homophobe, although what Ellis is talking about it is actually more complex than knee-jerk reactions would suggest. What he’s discussing (although often muddily and badly phrased) is whether audiences – and even more than that, risk averse producers – are prepared to accept a gay man in as sexually frank a straight role as Christian Grey.

While people inevitably get bashed on the head for talking about things in the terms Ellis has, it is something that’s more of an issue than we’d perhaps like to think. Yes, in an ideal world, it shouldn’t matter and it is acting – Tom Cruise isn’t really an all-action secret-agent, but audiences are fine pretending he is. However there is actually a genuine question here over whether audiences will accept a gay actor in a very straight role, with part of the problem being that it’s never really been tested in a mainstream film.

I also know personally that some of my friends do find it tough to view actors as anything other than gay, once they know their sexuality, no matter what the role is (one even had the same reaction to Bomer in Magic Mike as Ellis is suggesting, as she felt that despite him playing a straight stripper, ‘He’s so gay’). There is undoubtedly a level of homophobia working there, but the fact is it exists and quite widespread. While it shouldn’t matter, when Hollywood looks at the bottom line, they’re undoubtedly going to go with the safer, straighter choice. It’s not right, but sadly that’s the way it is, and it’s as much a reflection of the truth about how society views gay people as it is about the way Hollywood works.

James Duke Mason & Matthew Mishory Plan An LGBT-Themed Thriller

August 4, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

James Duke Mason (son of Belinda Carlisle) is an actor who to be honest hasn’t really had that many roles, but he’s became well known for being incredibly active for LGBT causes and being one of the few very young actors (he’s just 20) prepared to stand up, say they’re gay and actually use that for a bit of activism (it doesn’t hurt either that he’s quite the hottie). Now he’s teamed up with director Matthew Mishory, whose LGBT-themed film Joshua Tree 1951: A Portrait of James Dean is currently doing the festival rounds (you can watch the trailer here), to put together a political thriller called Disappear Here.

They’re currently looking for funding and have set up a Kickstarter campaign hoping to raise $25,000. The film is described as, ‘Disappear Here is set in the parallel shadow worlds of Hollywood and high-stake national politics, where emotions and loyalty are mere commodities, and where privacy is an outmoded 20th century notion. This moody, stylish thriller asks who sets the price of a lie worth telling — and who pays? Though staged in the present day, the film will echo classical Hollywood film noir of the 1940s, the color palettes of early 80s album covers, and the music from those albums. Disappear Here weaves a tale of blackmail, sexuality, and personal courage. Part murder mystery, part meditation, it is a moral tale for our time.’

There’s a great team behind this one, including Sex Lies & Videotape producer Matthew Mason (who’s also James’ dad), and it’s well worth taking a closer look at to see whether you want to support it over at Kickstarter. You can also find out a bit more by watching the video above.

Trans Matrix Director Lana Wachowski Makes A Rare Appearance In Cloud Atlas Video

July 31, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Before the release of 2008’s Speed Racer, it was revealed that Lana Wachowski, who had directed the likes of The Matrix movies as Larry, was in the process of transitioning from male to female.

Lana completed her transition at some point after the release of Speed Racer, and then set to work, still alongside Andy, on several ambitious projects. One of her planned films, described as a ‘gay Iraq war love story’, couldn’t find funding, but they’ve now shot Cloud Atlas, with Run Lola Run’s Tom Twyker joining them for the multi-story film, which stars the likes of Tom Hanks, Halle Berry, Ben Whishaw and Hugh Grant.

Now Lana has made her first official appearance since her transition (she and Andy never have made many public appearances, so it’s unsurprising it’s taken a while until we’ve seen her) in a video in which she, Andy and Tom joke around and explain the creative process that went into making Cloud Atlas. You can watch that video above, and we’ve also embedded the epic and fascinating trailer they’re talking about below.

New Skyfall Trailer – James Bond is back (after being dead for a bit)

July 31, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

It’s all action in the new Skyfall trailer, which suggest 007 is back on track after the messy blip that was Quantum Of Solace. It appears Bond is believed dead and M is in a bit of trouble. However the thankfully still breathing 007 is called back into action, meeting his new Q (Ben Whishaw), going up against a very blond Javier Bardem and watching an awful lot of things explode. It’s looking very cool and will hit UK cinemas on October 26th, before it hits the US on November 9th.

Life Of Pi Trailer – Take a look at Ang Lee’s gorgeous new film

July 25, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

If you’ve been to see a 3D movie in the past few weeks, you may have caught some great flying fish footage from Ang Lee’s upcoming Life Of Pi. While that’s not online yet, the first proper trailer has arrived, suggesting that while this is going to be an unusual film, it’s going to look utterly amazing. The film is based on Yan Martel’s Booker Prize winning book about Pi Patel (played by newcomer Suraj Sharma) who, after a shipwreck, shares a lifeboat with a Bengal tiger named Richard Parker, a hyena, an injured zebra, and an orangutan (although we’ve only seen a tiger in the footage seen so far). The potential Oscar-bait movie is currently due out December 21st.
