Beautiful Something Trailer – Four gay men and one night in Philadelphia

October 3, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

beautiful-something-slideWe reviewed Beautiful Something back when it screened at Outfest. It’s taken a while, but now it’s coming to DVD in the UK, and Peccadillo Pictures has released a new trailer.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘BEAUTIFUL SOMETHING follows four diverse men as they navigate life during one sublime night in Philadelphia.

‘Cute, twenty-two-year-old writer Brian (Brian Sheppard) continually crashes and burns with each guy he meets, but does not understand why. Jim (Zack Ryan), gorgeous and full-of-life, is not afraid to break hearts except when it comes to his forty-something lover who is a world-renowned sculptor. It seems Drew (Colman Domingo) is solely focused on his latest masterpiece and not Jim. Then there’s Bob (John Lescault), a successful talent agent from LA in his mid-sixties who leads a double life being a sugar daddy while traveling on business. As all four comb the Philadelphia streets looking for a connection, they often settle for something quick and easy. However, tonight is much different.

‘Inspired by real-life experiences, BEAUTIFUL SOMETHING explores the deeper meaning of how giving one’s self to love, and its necessary vulnerabilities, helps us turn the corner from seeing the world as a child to seeing the world as an adult.’

It’ll be out on DVD in the UK on November 7th. [Read more…]

I Promise You Anarchy (Te prometo anarquía) Trailer – Love, skating & drugs in the gay-themed film

October 2, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

i-promise-you-anarchyAnarchy is not normally a promise anyone wants someone to make, but that’s the title of the new gay-themed film from Mexico. It certainly looks like a film that will continue the great run of LGBT flicks from central and south America.

Here’s the brief synopsis: ‘In a contemporary México City, two skating lovers develop their relationship at the same time as they try to carry on business with drug mafia.’

As you can see in the trailer, it looks both entertaining and a little sexy. The film is due out soon in the UK from TLA Releasing. You can take a look at the movie’s trailer below. [Read more…]

Haiti Cancels Its First Film Festival Following Death Threats

October 1, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

massimadi-slideIt’s not easy being LGBT in Haiti. While same sex activity was legalised in 1986, there are few legal protections for gay people, and harassment by the police using various other statutes is not unusual. Socially there are plenty of issues to, with the strongly Catholic nation having a very anti-gay bias.

That has now resulted in plans for the country’s first LGBT film festival being scrapped, following death threats and police pressure. Ultimately it was the authorities who ended prospects for the Massimadi festival – which has previously been held in Brussels and Montreal – going ahead. They have claimed though that it wasn’t blocked due to the threats against the organisers and participants, but more insidiously, Jean Danton Leger, commissioner of Port-au-Prince, claimed it was stopped to protect public morals. That means that while it was initially just postponed by the organisers, it’s now unlikely to be able to go ahead at all.

Charloe Jeudy from Kouraj, Haiti’s leading LGBT group, told Reuters, that those organising the festival, “Are very worried about the security of members of the community who live in this country. It’s a blow of intolerance.”

As well as the Commissioner, others had come out against the festival, including Haitian senator Jean Renel Senatus, who wrote on Facebook that Massimadi poses a “great danger” to Haitian families, as it “aims to promote homosexuality in our country”. Senatus has made ridding Haiti of homosexuality a bit of a mission, including wanting it banned from imported TV shows, such as Glee.

The hope was that the festival could raise awareness of homophobia in African and Caribbean communities, but instead it’s been a victim of homophobia before it could even take place.

Gay Director Lee Daniels Is Planning A Musical Movie About His Own Life

October 1, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

lee-danielsLee Daniels has had success directing the likes of Precious, The Paperboy and The Butler, as well as being the creator of TV’s Empire. However, he’s not the first person you might expect to get a movie about their life.

He feels differently though, and if handled well, he might just be right. It’s not just a standard biopic he’s hoping to make either, as Daniels wants it to be a musical. He tells Billboard, “My publicist will kill me, but I’m in talks about doing a musical film about my life. I’ve had a pretty interesting life. I’ve come from the projects. I’ve been homeless. It’ll have original music and sort of be like Fellini’s ‘8 1/2‘ or ‘All That Jazz.’”

8 1/2 was a loose musical take on Federico Fellini’s own life, while All That Jazz saw Bob Fosse looking at himself through a thinly fictionalised veil.

As well as being homeless and coming from a pretty deprived area, Daniels has also previously spoken about the difficulties of growing up African-American and gay, as well as how he, like many other gay men in the 1980s, watched many of his friends die of AIDS. He later had a problem with drugs (which he has suggested was partly due to his guilt over surviving when so few others did) and survived two heart attacks.

It’s very early days, and Daniels has had issues in the past with those backing his films pulling funding or getting cold feet, so he may struggle to get it off the ground. However, it could make for a potentially very interesting film if he does get it made.

Trans-Themed Sitcom Boys Meets Girl Won’t Be Back For A Third Season

October 1, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

boy-meets-girl-tv-slideThe BBC broke new ground with Boy Meets Girl, a sitcom with a trans lead characters played by a trans actress. However, it’s been revealed that after two season, the show is coming to an end.

The BBC says, “We are tremendously proud of BBC Two’s Boy Meets Girl, but after two series feel the story has reached a natural end point. We would like to thank the creative team behind the show and of course the entire cast.”

While the story did reach a feeling of conclusion at the end of Series 2, it felt more because the makers knew there was a chance they wouldn’t be back for another set of episodes. It is a great shame though, as the show has been well received by critics and viewers, but there weren’t enough viewers to keep the BBC making more.

Rebecca Root, who played Judy, the 40-years trans woman who gets into a relationship with 20-something cisgender Leo, certainly feels it could have gone further. She tells Chortle, “Everyone’s really sorry that the show’s come to its end. We’re all very disappointed. The way I see shows going is that you establish your territory with the first series, you consolidate with the second and then you develop things in the third series – you can then open it up and really get into the meat of the story.

“I felt that while series two didn’t have quite the same tone as series one it was establishing a level. We were all looking forward to series three to get going… I felt that they were selling us a bit short by pulling it after two.”

Hopefully though, this won’t be the end of the BBC exploring trans issues, as while it has stated it needs to do better to serve the community, it’s recently revealed that Riley Carter Millington, the first trans actor to play a trans character in soap opera Eastenders, has also been dropped. With that and Boy Meets Girl going, it’s got a bit of a void to fill.

Zac Efron Is Heading For Wall Street & Going Straight To Hell

October 1, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

we-are-your-friendsZac Efron is putting his producers hat on, as Variety reports that he’s Zac Efron developing and may star in a movie loosely based on John LeFevre’s book, Straight to Hell: True Tales of Deviance, Debauchery, and Billion-Dollar Deals.

The film will be another trip to the shady side of Wall Street, as the book is based on LeFevre’s own experiences, ‘offering a dark yet humorous account of his life as a high-profile investment banker.’ It’s not known how the movie might change things, although as it’s already being billed as a loose adaptation, it’s safe to say they’ll make a few changes, while still showing us the seductive world of big money and excess that resulted in financial implosion.

Paramount Pictures is backing the movie, with John M. Phillips writing the script. It’s not known when it might shoot.
