#Adulting Episode 2 – Ben Baur’s comedic, gay-themed web series returns, & it needs your help

April 25, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

adulting-s2Back in January we posted the first episode of Adulting, featuring Hunting Season’s Ben Baur and hi friend Thandi Tolmay as gay and straight friends having to deal with the fact they’re now grown ups – whether they want to be or not.

Now, with a Kickstarter campaign running to raise money to finish the season, comes Episode 2. The episode, called Hipster Hell Hail Mary, sees Faye (Tolmay) out on a date which quickly starts to go hideously wrong. Luckily, Max (Baur) is literally on call to help her out – or at least to make things a hell of a lot more dramatic!

Tolmay comments, “We kind of take a swing at a wide variety of things in this episode.. But internet dating and hipster culture definitely take the hardest hit. My character Faye is not a classic ingénue leading lady. She can be a little rough around the edges and has very low tolerance for pretention and b.s. You see her take her best optimistic try at dating and fail.”

Baur and Tolmay created, write and star in the show, which is directed by TJ Marchbank . The three have been friends for going on 10 years after meeting at The American Musical and Dramatic Academy, where they all graduated together.

Take a look at #Adulting Episode 2 below. And if you want to see more, go help out at the Kickstarter campaign. [Read more…]

Final X-Men: Apocalypse Trailer – Can a mutant destroy the entire world?

April 25, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

x-men-apocalypse-slideIn just a few weeks the mutants are returning and facing the awesome power of Apocalypse – an ancient mutant who is so powerful he has been worshipped as a god, and who isn’t impressed with the modern world. The final trailer is here to suggest this is going to be pretty epic.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Following the critically acclaimed global smash hit X-Men: Days of Future Past, director Bryan Singer returns with X-MEN: APOCALYPSE. Since the dawn of civilization, he was worshipped as a god. Apocalypse, the first and most powerful mutant from Marvel’s X-Men universe, amassed the powers of many other mutants, becoming immortal and invincible. Upon awakening after thousands of years, he is disillusioned with the world as he finds it and recruits a team of powerful mutants, including a disheartened Magneto (Michael Fassbender), to cleanse mankind and create a new world order, over which he will reign. As the fate of the Earth hangs in the balance, Raven (Jennifer Lawrence) with the help of Professor X (James McAvoy) must lead a team of young X-Men to stop their greatest nemesis and save mankind from complete destruction.’

It’ll be in cinemas on May 18th. [Read more…]

Four Moons (Cuatro Lunas) (DVD Review)

April 24, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Alejandro de la Madrid, Antonio Velázquez, Cesar Ramos, Gustavo Egelhaaf
Director: Sergio Tovar Velarde
Running Time: 110 mins
Certificate: 18
Release Date: April 25th 2016 (UK)

It’s taken a while for Four Moons to get to the UK, but now it’s here and it’s worth the wait. The film is based around a concept that could have overwhelmed the movie itself, but thankfully it works due to care that’s taken with the stories it tells.

Four Moons follows four separate gay-themed tales, each focusing on a different time in life and the stages of relationships. The ‘New Moon’ is an adolescent who is just figuring out his sexuality and isn’t sure what to do with his feelings for his cousin. However, acting on those feelings may backfire and cause him major trouble. There are also two young men, one straight and the other closeted but just out of a relationship with a man. These old friends end up sleeping together and embark on a relationship, but tension quickly arises due to the fact one of them is adamant that no one else should ever know about what is going on, as he is terrified of what others will think and whether it will hurt his family. Packed in a Trunk: The Lost Art of Edith Lake Wilkinson (US DVD Review)

April 24, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Jane Anderson, Tess Ayers
Director: Michelle Boyaner
Running Time: 74 mins
Certificate: NR
Release Date: April 26th 2016 (US)

When she was a girl, artist and director Jane Anderson’s mother found a hoard of art packed away in trunks in an attic. It was the work of Jane’s great aunt, Edith Lake Wilkinson, and as a result Jane grew up surrounded by Edith’s painting, which helped her find her own visual sense.

Decades later Janes sets out to find out more about Edith, as well as to discover her place in the world of early 20th Century Provincetown art. The main thing they know about Edith is that she spent the last years of her life institutionalised, but they don’t know why. They also know she had a female companion, Fanny, who they presume was actually her lover. [Read more…]

New Independence Day: Resurgence Trailer – Once again, no landmark is safe from the aliens

April 24, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

independence-day-resurgence-slideHaving talked about it ever the first Independence Day became a gargantuan hit in 1996, we are finally getting a sequel, Resurgence. Many of the old face return, including Jeff Goldblum, Bill Pullman, Vivica A. Fox and Brent Spiner, along with a new generation, led by Jessie Usher and Liam Hemsworth.

Will Smith isn’t returning, but the aliens sure are, and this promo certainly wants to be a bit dark and moody, although right at the end suggests it will retain the humour that helped make the first one a hit. They’re also certainly keen to suggest that things are getting bigger.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘We always knew they were coming back. After INDEPENDENCE DAY redefined the event movie genre, the next epic chapter delivers global spectacle on an unimaginable scale.  Using recovered alien technology, the nations of Earth have collaborated on an immense defense program to protect the planet.  But nothing can prepare us for the aliens’ advanced and unprecedented force.  Only the ingenuity of a few brave men and women can bring our world back from the brink of extinction.’

Take a look at the new trailer below. [Read more…]

Cafe Society Trailer – Jesse Eisenberg & Kristen Stewart star in Woody Allen’s latest

April 24, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

cafe-society-slideEven when Woody Allen doesn’t star in his own movies, there tends to be a stand-in for him, and it has to be said, he’s picked a good on for Cafe Society in the form of Jesse Eisenberg. Re-teaming him with the often wooden Kristen Stewart may not have been as good an idea, but we will see.

Ahead of the movie’s debut at Cannes, the first trailer has now arrived.

Eisenberg plays Bobby, a young man who relocates to Hollywood in the hopes of pursuing a career in film. Once there, he falls in love and becomes captivated by the lush Hollywood scene. Steve Carell, Blake Lively, Parker Posey and Jeannie Berlin also star.

Interestingly, after holding out for years and suggesting he’s always stick with digital film, Cafe Society marks Woody’s first film shot on digital. Take a look at the trailer below. [Read more…]

Diary of a Teenage Girl’s Marielle Heller To Direct Case Against 8 Gay Rights Drama

April 21, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

case-against-8-slideWhen we reviewed the documentary The Case Against 8 – about the fight to overturn the anti-gay Proposition 8 in California – we said it played out like a movie. Now it’s getting closer to becoming one, as THR reports that Diary of a Teenage Girl helmer, Marielle Heller, is set to direct a film version of the Sundance prize-winning doc.

Ben Cotner & Ryan White’s 2014 documentary delved deep into the court cases that sought to overturn California’s ban on same-sex marriage after the ballot measure Proposition 8 was enacted – where voters quashed a law allowing gay people to marry and attempted to enshrine in the State’s constitution that opposite sex marriage was the only possibility. This left hundreds of couple in limbo, who had married when it was legal and suddenly didn’t know whether they were still legally spouses or not. Unsurprisingly this led to court cases, which sought to find Prop 8 unconstitutional.

It should make a great movie, with such unlikely elements as the right wing Republican lawyer who successfully led the court cases that made George W. Bush President, signing up to fight to allow same sex couples to marry. There were also Perry Mason moments when witnesses seemed to change their mind about gay marriage on the stand, and even a full-on movie ending full of twists and last minute hiccups, before a big, emotional finale.

Chernin Entertainment is producing the movie, although there’s no news on when we might see it. The Case Against 8 film is one of several gay-rights focussed projects doing the rounds at the moment, including Dustin Lance Black and Gus Van Sant ambitious mini-series When We Rise, and Fox 2000’s slowly gestating movie about Jim Obergefell, the lead plaintiff in the case that led to the US Supreme Court allowing same sex marriage in all 50 states.

Mapplethorpe: Look At The Pictures (Cinema Review)

April 21, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Robert Mapplethorpe, Debbie Harry, Fran Lebowitz, Patti Smith
Director: Fenton Bailey, Randy Barbato
Running Time: 108 mins
Certificate: 18
Release Date: April 22nd 2016 (UK)

Many people know the name Robert Mapplethorpe and the fact that he took some pretty rude photos. However, the man himself has become somewhat lost in the mix. Indeed, perhaps the best known thing about him happened after he died. His exhibition The Perfect Moment caused protests in many of the cities it travelled to in the US, which launched a national conversation about whether the government should subsidise such ‘shocking’ art. It also resulted in a court case that tried to convict one of the exhibition spaces showing The Perfect Moment with obscenity.

That’s not the only thing that’s tended to obscure the man behind the myth, as well as meaning many people know little about the breadth of his art. Other things that sometimes overshadow a fuller appreciation of Mapplethorpe include his relationship with Patti Smith, as well as particular images that tend to overwhelm everything around them (such as the infamous self-portrait where he has a bullwhip stuck up his ass). Indeed, many watching this documentary may be surprised about how many his non-sexual images they recognise, without knowing he was the man behind them. If nothing else, Look At The Pictures is testament to what a good photographer he was. [Read more…]
