John Krasinski In Talks For JJ Abrams’ Sci-Fi Thriller, God Particle

April 12, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

John-KrasinskiBack in 2012 JJ Abrams revealed he was working on a movie called God Particle, with Julius Onah set to direct. After that, new about the film went pretty quiet, but things are picking up again, as Variety reports that John Krasinski is circling the movie.

He would join the recently cast David Oyelowo and Gugu Mbatha-Raw in the movie, which ‘centers on a team of astronauts who make a terrifying discovery that challenges everything they know about the fabric of reality, as they desperately fight for survival.’ Oren Uziel (The Kitchen Sink) wrote the script.

Onah is still set to direct the movie, which will start shooting in the next few months. It’s currently set for release February 2017.

Steven Spielberg Set To Reunite With Mark Rylance For The Kidnapping of Edgardo Mortara

April 12, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

steven-spielbergIt seems that Steven Spielberg and Mark Rylance has found their muses in one another. Despite massive stage success, Rylance has made relatively few films, but now he’s set to work with Spielberg for the third time in less than two years (after Bridge Of Spies and The BFG), with The Kidnapping of Edgardo Mortara.

Deadline reports that the movie will be based on Pulitzer Prize-winner David Kertzer’s book, with a script by fellow Pulitzer honoree, Tony Kushner (Angels In America, Lincoln). Rylance will play Pope Pius IX in the film, which ‘recounts the story of a young Jewish boy in Bologna, Italy in 1858 who, having been secretly baptized, is forcibly taken from his family to be raised as a Christian. His parents’ struggle to free their son becomes part of a larger political battle that pits the Papacy against forces of democracy and Italian unification.’

The movie will apparently be Spielberg’s next movie, which is a slight surprise as he’s been busy casting Ready Player One. However, with that movie not due out until 2018 and The Kidnapping of Edgardo Mortara not due to start shooting until early 2017, it’s possible he will actually shoot the latter after Ready Player One, but it will arrive in cinemas beforehand.

Gay Short Film Showcase: Bound & Thrashed – Will S&M uncover a new side to a young gay man?

April 11, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

bound-and-thrashedBound & Thrashed may not be the most polished film we’ve ever featured, but it certainly raises some interesting questions and at times is pretty sexy. It explores what happens when a young man is asked to push his sexual boundaries by becoming the dominant in some S&M play, something he’s not initially comfortable with, as well as questioning what it is to be a man.

Here’s the synopsis from IMDB: ‘Bound And Thrashed is a story which echoes the idea that its not until we are put in a situation that may seen unnatural to us, that we can truly uncover what we desire and what we are capable of. Nathan (Andrew Hood) is depressed and unable to move on from a former lover, his concerned friend Tess (London Gabraelle) persuades him into going on a blind date with Geoffrey (John Cunningham), an older man who has an unusual appetite. Nathans encounter with Geoffrey ultimately assists him in moving on from the past and leads him to self discovery and sexual fulfillment

New Fantastic Beasts & Where To Find Them Trailer – A familiar & yet new take on the world of Harry Potter

April 11, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

fantastic-beasts-slideIn case there was anyone who wasn’t aware that the upcoming Fantastic Beasts & Where To Find Them is a Harry Potter spin-off, this new trailer absolutely underlines the fact, as well as letting us know it’s a brand new story. There’s mention of Albus Dumbledore, muggles and Hogwarts, as well as the iconic Potter musical theme, but also a setting that’s clearly the America of the past.

Those who’ve been missing Potter will certainly find a few things to get excited about.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Academy Award winner Eddie Redmayne (“The Theory of Everything”) stars in the central role of wizarding world magizoologist Newt Scamander, under the direction of David Yates, who helmed the last four “Harry Potter” blockbusters.

‘“Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them” opens in 1926 as Newt Scamander has just completed a global excursion to find and document an extraordinary array of magical creatures. Arriving in New York for a brief stopover, he might have come and gone without incident…were it not for a No-Maj (American for Muggle) named Jacob, a misplaced magical case, and the escape of some of Newt’s fantastic beasts, which could spell trouble for both the wizarding and No-Maj worlds.’

It’ll be in cinemas in November. [Read more…]

New Suicide Squad Trailer – DC Comics villains become a band on unlikely heroes, maybe?

April 11, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

suicide-squad-cast-photo2-slideThe new trailer for Suicide Squad is keen to show that this is going to be a rather different kind of comic book movie, and that it’s not going to just pay lip service to the fact the heroes are actually a bunch of villains. It does look like it could be fund though, and may actually end up helping sell an interconnected DC Comics film universe more than the mixed reaction to Batman v Superman.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘From director David Ayer (“Fury,” “End of Watch”) comes “Suicide Squad,” starring Oscar nominee Will Smith (“Ali,” “The Pursuit of Happyness”), Oscar winner Jared Leto (“Dallas Buyers Club”), Margot Robbie (“The Wolf of Wall Street,” “Focus”), Joel Kinnaman (“Run All Night,” “The Killing”) and Oscar nominee Viola Davis (“The Help,” “Doubt”).

‘It feels good to be bad… Assemble a team of the world’s most dangerous, incarcerated Super Villains, provide them with the most powerful arsenal at the government’s disposal, and send them off on a mission to defeat an enigmatic, insuperable entity. U.S. intelligence officer Amanda Waller has determined only a secretly convened group of disparate, despicable individuals with next to nothing to lose will do. However, once they realize they weren’t picked to succeed but chosen for their patent culpability when they inevitably fail, will the Suicide Squad resolve to die trying, or decide it’s every man for himself?

‘Written and directed by Ayer based on the characters from DC Comics, the film also stars Jai Courtney (“Insurgent”), Jay Hernandez (“Takers”), Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje (“Thor: The Dark World”), Ike Barinholtz (“Neighbors”), Scott Eastwood (“Fury”), Cara Delevingne (“Paper Towns”), Adam Beach (“Cowboys & Aliens”), and Karen Fukuhara in her feature film debut. It is produced by Charles Roven and Richard Suckle, with Zack Snyder, Deborah Snyder, Colin Wilson and Geoff Johns serving as executive producers.’

The film will be in cinemas in August. [Read more…]

teenage-mutant-ninja-turtles-2-poster-slideTurtle Power is returning this summer with the release of New Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows, which follows up the unexpectedly successful live-action movie from a couple of years ago. It also introduces a few more characters from the comics and TV series, such as Casey Jones (Stephen Amell) and villains Krang, Bebop and Rocksteady.

First Looks At Kong: Skull Island and Valerian & The City Of A Thousand Planets

April 11, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

valerian-slideThe MTV Movie Awards offered the chance to get our first peak at a couple of highly anticipated new movie, most notably Kong: Skull Island and Luce Besson’s Valerian & The City Of A Thousand Planets.

Oscar-winner Brie Larson takes us to the set of Kong: Skull Island, which focuses on the action and excitement of the film. Tom Hiddleston and Corey Hawkins are also on hand talk up the movie, letting us know that it’s set during the Vietnam era and see a group of adventurers and military getting far more than they bargained for when they arrive on the uncharted Skull Island. It confirms that King Kong will be a bit part of the story, but also that it completely reboots things, as the giant gorilla was never taken to New York and isn’t the last of his kind.

Valerian & The City Of A Thousand Planets meanwhile is based on a classic novel, which as is pointed out in the footage below, helped inspire the likes of Star Wars and Avatar. Dane DeHaan and Cara Delevingne star in Luc Besson’s film version, which offers up a behind-the-scenes look in the footage below. In the original graphic novel, Valérian and Laureline are 28th Century agents working for the Galaxity organization, whose adventures take them across time and space. However after Galaxity and their home planet disappear, they are left to forge a future on their own. [Read more…]

Scott Eastwood Joins Vin Diesel & Co. In Furious 8

April 11, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

scott-eastwood2For the past few years Scott Eastwood has seemed on the verge of making it big, but while he’s often been in the mix for major roles, he’s often failed to make the final cut. For example he will be seen in a small role in this summer’s Suicide Squad, but be missed out on several other massive Marvel and DC roles he was up for.

However, now he’s set to join one of the biggest franchises on the planet, as he’ll star in Furious 7, alongside fellow newcomer, Charlize Theron. While Theron will be the main villain, there’s little info on who Scott will play, but he did reveal on Instagram, ‘I can’t say too much, but I get to play a new character who operates under Kurt Russell in the movie, which is incredible, because Kurt was a total childhood hero of mine growing up. Very much looking forward to learning a thing or two from such an original and cool guy.’

In Furious 7, Russell’s Mr. Nobody was a mysterious government agent who does a deal with Vin Diesel and co. to help them if they help him locate a dangerous hacking device. It sounds like Eastwood will be involved with the same organisation.

The likes of Vin Diesel, Dwayne Johnson, Jason Statham, Michelle Rodriguez and Tyrese Gibson will all returns. Shooting kicks off soon for an April 2017 release.

Like You Mean It (DVD Review)

April 10, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Philipp Karner, Denver Milord
Director: Philipp Karner
Running Time: 90 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: March 28th 2016 (UK)

Oftentimes when someone writes and directs a movie and then cast themselves in the lead role, there’s a tendency to try to underplay the flaws of that character and make it seem like nothing is really their fault. It’s to Philipp Karner’s credit that he doesn’t smooth his character’s rough edges – indeed some will think the person he plays is often a bit of a dick – which allows this to be a much sharper movie than it might otherwise have been.

Like You Mean It is a character study, but the character isn’t so much a person as a relationship. Mark (Karner) and Jonah (Denver Milord) have been together for some time, and while Jonah is happy with the domestic normality and routine that their life has settled into, Mark isn’t so sure. Jonah is surprised to discover that not only does their relationship have problems, but it may be on the verge of ending. [Read more…]
