Elizabeth Taylor Ran Dallas Buyers Club Style HIV Drugs Operation From Her Home

December 3, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

elizabeth-taylorIn her later years, double Oscar-winning screen legend Elizabeth Taylor became perhaps the most famous AIDS activist in the world, spending decades raising money and awareness. However he did more than just hold glitzy benefits, including, as Taylor’s friend and fellow AIDS activist Kathy Ireland has told ET, running a Dallas Buyer’s Club style drugs operation, getting medication to those with AIDS vefore it was officially approved, from her Bel Air home.

Ireland says, “Talk about fearless in her home in Bel-Air. It was a safe house. A lot of the work that she did, it was illegal, but she was saving lives. It was in a time when it was not something to do. Business associates pleaded with her, ‘Leave this thing alone.’ She received death threats. Friends hung up on her when she asked for help, but something that I love about Elizabeth is her courage.”

She adds of Taylor, “She would sell jewelry, there were transfers of money – sometimes in a paper bag. She thought she might get caught but she wasn’t afraid. She’d go to jail for it. Elizabeth and fear were not in the same sentence.”

Taylor came very early to the AIDS fight, co-founding AMfar, publicly standing by Rock Hudson while he was dying of the disease and testifying to congress to try to get them to pay attentions to HIV and AIDS. She dedicated much of the last 26 years of her life to the battle.

Buyers Club became vitally important at a time when the first drugs were becoming available but the US government and medical establishment were dragging their feet on approving them, as shown in the Oscar-winning movie, Dallas Buyers Club. [Read more…]

Eye In The Sky Trailer – Helen Mirren, Alan Rickman & Aaron Paul deal with the difficulty of drone strikes

December 3, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

eye-in-the-sky-aaron-paulDirector Gavin Hood dropped a big stinker with X-Men Origins: Wolverine, but he had a little more success with 2013’s Ender’s Game. Now he’s getting serious with Eye In The Sky, which takes on the difficulties and drama of the military’s use of unmanned drones.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘EYE IN THE SKY stars Helen Mirren as Colonel Katherine Powell, a UK-based military officer in command of a top secret drone operation to capture terrorists in Kenya. Through remote surveillance and on-the-ground intel, Powell discovers the targets are planning a suicide bombing and the mission escalates from “capture” to “kill.” But as American pilot Steve Watts (Aaron Paul) is about to engage, a nine-year old girl enters the kill zone, triggering an international dispute reaching the highest levels of US and British government over the moral, political, and personal implications of modern warfare.’

The movie premiered to decent reviews at TIFF and will be seen in cinemas next spring. Take a look at the trailer below. [Read more…]

Batman v Superman: Dawn Of Justice Trailer – Henry Cavill & Ben Affleck don’t see eye-to-eye

December 3, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

batman-v-superman-face-off-slideNext March Warner Bros./DC is making its massive bid for a superhero universe of its own with Batman v Superman: Dawn Of Justice. However while much has been teased about Henry Cavill and Ben Affleck’s Man Of Steel and Caped Crusader not being fans of one another, but the new trailer also gives us a glimpse of Wonder Woman and the fact that she may be key to getting the bat and alien to work together.

It also features Jesse Eisenberg’s Lex Luthor and shows us that we haven’t completely seen the end of Michael Shannon’s Zod.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Fearing the actions of a god-like super hero left unchecked, Gotham City’s own formidable, forceful vigilante takes on Metropolis’s most revered, modern-day savior, while the world wrestles with what sort of hero it really needs. And with Batman and Superman at war with one another, a new threat quickly arises, putting mankind in greater danger than it’s ever known before.’

Maggie (Blu-ray Review)

December 1, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Arnold Schwarzenegger, Abigail Breslin, Joely Richardson
Director: Henry Hobson
Running Time: 95 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: November 23rd 2015 (UK)

Arnold Schwarzenegger makes a zombie movie! He’s going to be blowing the undead away left, right and centre, while mumbling memorable catchphrases, isn’t he? Actually, no, as this is something very different both for the Terminator and for zombie flicks. Except for the undead, this is Arnie in a small-scale mother-daughter indie melodrama, with fairly little action and much soul-searching.

Schwarzenegger is Wade Vogel, who’s living with his wife and kids in the middle of nowhere, where they’ve managed to escape a zombie plague that has affected millions. After his eldest daughter, Maggie (Abigail Breslin), gets bitten and infected, he goes to pick her up from quarantine to take her home, knowing that while she will be okay for a while, eventually she will turn and have to be taken away before she turns completely – assuming she doesn’t die before then. Batman v Superman: Dawn Of Justice Trailer Tease – Superman unmasks the Caped Crusader

December 1, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

batman-v-superman-face-off-slideIf anyone was wondering whether Batman v Superman was just a title or whether the two superheroes really would be facing off rather than simply teaming up, this teaser for Thursday’s new trailer shows they sure don’t like one another. Indeed, here Batman is all chained up, when an angry Superman arrives to unmask him, and just to add a little more strangeness, it would seem the military there are almost worshipping the Man Of Steel.

It’s all pretty intriguing and has certainly whetted out appetite for the ful trailer.

The movie is due in cinemas March 2016.

Eroddity(s) 2 (VoD Review)

November 30, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Addison Graham, Grayson Lange, Cory Tyndall, Clay Yearwood, Walter Delmar
Director: Steven Vasquez
Running Time: 94 mins
Certificate: NR
Release Date: Out Now

In 2014 director Steven Vasquez brought us the gay short film anthology film Eroddity(s) (as well as the Eroddity(s)-esque Angels With Tethered Wings). It was a big enough success that now we have Eroddity(s) 2, which present three more creepy tales. In case you’re wondering the title is a contraction of ‘erotic oddities’, which is quite apt as the film is what would result if you smashed a horror film, The Twilight Zone and gay porn together in a super-collider.

If your ears pricked up on reading the words ‘gay porn’, you’ll be pleased to hear that as with the first movie, hardly any of the actors get through the movie without stripping naked at least once, and on a few occasions you can tell they were quite enjoying what was going on. So if you want to, you can play spot the (semi-)boner with the movie. [Read more…]

Two & A Half Men’s Holland Taylor Confirms She’s In A Relationship With A Woman

November 30, 2015 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

holland-taylor-two-and-a-half-menActress Holland Taylor has been on screens since the 1970s, even winning an Emmy as Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series for The Practice in 1999. However thanks to her awesome turn as Charlie and Alan’s mother Evelyn in Two & A Half Men, for many she is indelibly linked to the sitcom.

Despite her success, she hasn’t spoken too much about her private life, but now she has confirmed that she is in a relationship with a woman, adding, “I haven’t come out because I am out. I live out.”

Holland was asked about whether she’d thought about marriage in her current relationship when she spoke about her sexuality, saying to WYNYC, “Well, my relationship is with a woman, and I have not – given my generation it would not be something that would automatically occur to me. But she’s mentioned it because just from a spiritual point of view, from a heart point of view, as a deed that has a very rich symbolic gesture to it, it has its attraction. But it’s been a very casual conversation at this point. But it’s not – it would be a very private thing. I would not do that publicly. But as a symbol, as a pledge, as a plighting one’s troth I would see it – that it would be a wonderful thing to do.”

After being asked if she’d share her partner’s name, the 72-year-old actress added, “Well I feel at this point in the conversation it feels kind of awkward. Now I feel very very shy of it. I’ve been really wrestling with this lately because most of my relationships have been with women and I don’t like talking about them because I don’t like talking about the politics of it all because I’m not political about it. I think we’re ridiculous in this country about it. Ridiculous.

“And so, it’s awkward because if I talk about relationships in my life or people that have been in my life, or somebody I’ve been seeing for a while or this, that and the other thing, I’d like to be able to just say that, without having to stop and say, ‘so have you come out?’ No, I haven’t come out because I am out. I live out.”
