Queen of the Desert Trailer – Nicole Kidman meets Robert Pattinson in the Middle East

July 6, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

queen-of-the-desert-slideReviews were rather mixed for Werner Herzog’s Queen of the Desert at its first festival screenings, but the trailer suggests it will at least look good. And if you’ve ever wanted to see Robert Pattinson as Lawrence Of Arabia, this is your chance.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘A true story of the life of British explorer and adventurer, Gertrude Bell, QUEEN OF THE DESERT chronicles her journeys of love and loss in the Middle East during the early 20th century.

‘Academy Award winner Nicole Kidman (THE PAPERBOY, RABBIT HOLE, AUSTRALIA, THE HOURS) stars alongside Academy Award nominated James Franco (SPRING BREAKERS, RISE OF THE PLANET OF THE APES, 127 HOURS), Golden Globe & Emmy Award winner Damian Lewis (“Homeland”, KEANE, “Band of Brothers”), and Robert Pattinson (THE ROVER, MAPS TO THE STARS, WATER FOR ELEPHANTS). A curious and adventurous young woman eager to explore the world outside of England, Gertrude Bell (Kidman) goes to the British embassy in Tehran where she quickly falls in love with a secretary of the embassy, Henry Cadogan (Franco). This sparks the beginning of a life-long adventure among the beautiful but misunderstood peoples and cultures of the Middle East. Along the way, her path intersects with archaeologist T.E. Lawrence (Pattinson) also known as Lawrence of Arabia, and Major Charles Doughty-Wylie (Lewis), the British Consul General in the Ottoman Empire.

‘The story of QUEEN OF THE DESERT is based on the true-life story of Gertrude Bell, who was a British political officer and archaeologist but ultimately a trailblazer on her terms. The story details the extraordinary adventures of Bell wrestling with the conflicts of love and tragedy, enemy and friend, and foreign and familiar as she sought to understand and unify people from different cultures.’ [Read more…]

New Ant-Man Trailer – Paul Rudd turns mini superhero

July 6, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Ant-Man-Teaser-Poster1-slideIn just a couple of weeks we’ll get to see whether Marvel’s gamble on Ant-Man can follow in the footsteps of Thor and Iron Man in the realms of superheroes many thought couldn’t work on the screen, but which turned out to be pretty good.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘The next evolution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe brings a founding member of The Avengers to the big screen for the first time with Marvel Studios’ “Ant-Man.” Armed with the astonishing ability to shrink in scale but increase in strength, master thief Scott Lang must embrace his inner hero and help his mentor, Dr. Hank Pym, protect the secret behind his spectacular Ant-Man suit from a new generation of towering threats. Against seemingly insurmountable obstacles, Pym and Lang must plan and pull off a heist that will save the world.’

Jenny’s Wedding Trailer – Katherine Heigl is marrying Alexis Bledel in the gay marriage dramedy

July 2, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

jennys-wedding-slideIt probably couldn’t be better timing for Jenny’s Wedding that the movie is arriving in the wake of the US Supreme Court equal marriage ruling, as the movie stars Katherine Heigl as a lesbian who’s excited to be marrying her sweetheart (Alexis Bledel).

However, Jenny’s parents have always thought that her new fiancee was her roommate. When they discover the truth they aren’t too happy about it as it goes against their values – something Jenny was aware of and one of the reasons she’d kept their relationship from them.

Tom Wilkinson, Linda Emond and Grace Gummer co-star in the film, which is due out in US cinemas on July 31st (and on VoD the following day).

The trailer for the movie has arrived, which you can take a look at below. [Read more…]

Marvel Studios Boss Suggests An LGBT Character May Appear In One Of Their Movies

July 2, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

kevin-feigeMarvel movies are full of superheroics and action, but there’s no doubt that the world of major movie comic book characters is a very straight one (as evidenced by the recently uncovered contract that says Peter Parker/Spider-man must be heterosexual). However Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige has suggested that an LGBT character could be featured in one of their movies, but we may have a bit of a wait.

Talking about the possibility, Feige told Collider, “The comics always make the path that we get to have the fun of saying, ‘Yeah let’s choose this way or let’s choose this way’, and I think there are a lot of cool things happening in the comics now that – it’s usually a five to ten-year cycle between when something happens in the comics and when we can do it in the movie, sometimes a little less, but Civil War is certainly about the ten-year mark. Winter Soldier, I think, was around that time.

”So we always look at stuff that’s happening in the comics and go, ‘Where could we do that?’ Sometimes it’s sooner, but there’s no reason why that couldn’t happen in the next decade or sooner.”

However, while he isn’t ruling anything out, he’s certainly not ruling anything in. It is true that in Marvel’s comics things are getting more diverse, but it doesn’t seem there are currently any plans to move the films in that direction, even if the studio isn’t averse to the idea.

You wouldn’t think it would be too difficult to bring in at least a little more LGBT representation to their movies without waiting a decade though.

Jeremy Renner Says He’s Not Trying To Prove Anything In Response To Gay Rumours

July 2, 2015 By Tim Isaac 3 Comments

jeremy-rennerEver since Jeremy Renner started climbing the star ladder there have been rumours about his sexuality (which partly started because he often takes his mother to awards ceremonies with him as his ‘date’).

Now though he’s taken the time to address those rumours, telling Playboy, “I’m not going to try to prove what I am or am not. It’s silly, right? When you google yourself and the first thing that comes up is ‘Jeremy Renner gay,’ it’s like, ‘Oh, now you’ve arrived. You’re now a giant movie star.’ I don’t care, ultimately, if that’s what people want to think, read and care about. F**king say whatever the hell you want about me. Look at where we’re at socially—leaps and bounds ahead of where we started. That’s an amazing thing. To suggest that it’s negative, that being gay is a terrible thing, a perversion or whatever—I just don’t get it. Don’t you wish we were in a world where we’re not shaming, judging and boxing people in?”

While some have praised the Oscar nominee for not playing the game and refusing to ‘box’ himself in, others have seen it as another example of someone refusing to simply answer the question. It is admittedly odd that he’s keen to suggest that the rumours are about shaming and come from a place where people think being gay is negative, while he’s simulaneously not actually saying whether he is gay or not – something that arguably suggests he thinks there is an issue with it if he doesn’t want to just set the record straight.

Personally I don’t really care either way and if he’d prefer not to answer the question, that’s fair enough, but I’m certainly not as big a fan of Renner’s comments as some have been.

Gay Short Film Showcase: Brace – The Trans-Themed Short Gets Launched Online

July 1, 2015 By Scott Elliott 1 Comment

brace-slideAfter touring many of the world’s major film festivals, Jake Graf’s Brace is now available to view online for free, alongside Brothers, a US series following the lives of four Trans men.

Set in some of London’s most iconic gay nightspots, Graf’s stylish and sexy short film manages to tackle head-on some of the issues faced by Trans people in today’s drink- and drug-fuelled club culture in ways that are striking without being preachy.

With scenes of frustration, isolation and emotional vulnerability interwoven among hardcore clubbing scenes that could easily have felt at home in Human Traffic or Twenty-Four Hour Party People, this is a brave, raw and ambitious short that shows Graf to be a confident and competent filmmaker. Definitely worth a watch.

Steve Jobs Trailer – Michael Fassbender takes on the Apple co-founder

July 1, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

steve-jobs-pic1From the evidence of this trailer, Steve Jobs is going to be far more interesting than the bones of the synopsis might suggest – but then you’d hope so with a movie written by Aaron Sorkin and directed by Danny Boyle.

Having Michael Fassbender in the lead role helps too.

Steve Jobs is directed by Academy Award® winner Danny Boyle and written by Academy Award® winner Aaron Sorkin, working from Walter Isaacson’s best-selling biography of the Apple founder. The producers are Mark Gordon, Guymon Casady of Film 360, Scott Rudin and Academy Award® winner Christian Colson. Michael Fassbender plays Steve Jobs, the pioneering founder of Apple, with Academy Award®-winning actress Kate Winslet starring as Joanna Hoffman, former marketing chief of Macintosh. Steve Wozniak, who co-founded Apple, is played by Seth Rogen, and Jeff Daniels stars as former Apple CEO John Sculley. The film also stars Katherine Waterston as Chrisann Brennan, Jobs’ ex-girlfriend, and Michael Stuhlbarg as Andy Hertzfeld, one of the original members of the Apple Macintosh development team.’

‘Once in the City of Brotherly Love, Adonis tracks Rocky (Stallone) down and asks him to be his trainer. Despite his insistence that he is out of the fight game for good, Rocky sees in Adonis the strength and determination he had known in Apollo—the fierce rival who became his closest friend. Agreeing to take him on, Rocky trains the young fighter, even as the former champ is battling an opponent more deadly than any he faced in the ring.
