Area 51 Trailer – Oren Peli’s first movie since Paranormal Activity

April 23, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

area-51-oren-peliI don’t think we can hold out too much hope for the one even if the trailer looks dumb but potentially a lot of fun. Oren Peli had a massive hit with Paranormal Activity in 2007, and he was supposed to follow-it up with another found footage tale, Area 51, a couple of years later.

However first there was a delay in getting it shot, and then since being completed it’s sat of the shelf for years (it went in front of the cameras six years ago), with Paramount seemingly unsure what to do with it. It’s the sort of lack of confidence that suggests it may be a stinker.

However now it’s finally getting a small US cinema release on the same day it hits VoD on May 15th, and we can get a taste with the trailer.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘The film follows Reid, who has always been obsessed with UFOs. While on a weekend trip to Vegas, he convinces two friends to join him on a mission to break into Area 51, where they find terrifying proof of alien presence. Starring Reid Warner, Jamel King, Ben Rovner and Jelena Nik.’ [Read more…]

Riz Ahmed & Sam Claflin Circling Star Wars Rogue One

April 23, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

riz-ahmedStar Wars Rogue One is set to shoot this year but it still needs to complete its cast. Felicity Jones is already aboard and Ben Mendelsohn was recently rumoured to be joining her.

It appears a couple more are in contention as BadAss Digest reports Riz Ahmed is in talks for an unknown part in the movie, while TheWrap adds that Sam Claflin ‘is the frontrunner for one of the ensemble roles’.

The movie will be the first of the Star Wars Anthology movies, which Disney/Lucasfilm plan to release on alternate years and will focus on characters and situations beyond the main spine of the Star Wars story. Here’s the recently released brief synopsis: ‘A rogue band of resistance fighters unite for a daring mission to steal the Death Star plans and bring new hope to the galaxy in the Star Wars Anthology film, Rogue One.’

The only other think we know is that it won’t focus on the Jedi, with the main characters lacking the powers of the Force. Gareth Edwards is directing, with a December 16th, 2016 release date set.

First Look At Luke Bracey and Edgar Ramirez In The Point Break Remake

April 23, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

point-break-2015-pic1After a whole host of high profile actors passed on the Point Break remake, the producers settled on Luke Bracey and Edgar Ramirez and be their new Keanu Reeves and Patrick Swayze. They may not be big names, but they’re good actors, so hopefully that will count.

That said, reaction to the trailer shown at CinemaCon was mixed, with the only thing people agreeing being that a scene involving wingsuits was cool. While we don’t have the trailer yet, we don’t have the first two pics.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘In the fast-paced, high-adrenaline “Point Break,” a young FBI agent, Johnny Utah (Luke Bracey), infiltrates a cunning team of thrill-seeking elite athletes – led by the charismatic Bodhi (Edgar Ramirez). The athletes are suspected of carrying out a spate of crimes in extremely unusual ways. Deep undercover, and with his life in imminent danger, Utah strives to prove they are the architects of this string of inconceivable crimes. The film is replete with the most daring athleticism ever seen in a motion picture. These action adventure feats are performed by elite athletes representing the world’s best in class in big-wave surfing, wingsuit flying, sheer-face snowboarding, free rock climbing, and high-speed motorcycling.’

The film is due out at Christmas.

Domhnall Gleeson Signs Up To Star Alongside Tom Cruise In Doug Liman’s Mena

April 23, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

dohmnall-gleesonTom Cruise and Doug Liman had a great time working together on Edge Of Tomorrow, so much so that in January they announced that they were reuniting for the crime thriller Mena.

Now Liman has started to flesh out the cast, as Variety reports that Domhnall Gleeson and Sarah Wright will star in the movie.

Universal bought Barry Spinelli’s script last year for over a million dollars, with is about Barry Seal, a fired TWA pilot who became a major drug smuggler for the Medellin Cartel. He was later recruited by the DEA and CIA to provide intelligence, with his work tying to the Iran Contra scandal. He was assassinated by Colombians in 1986.

It’s not clear who Gleeson or Wright will play, but it adds to a big year for Domhnall, who’s set to appear in Star Wars: The Force Awakens and The Revenant, both of which will be out at the end of the year.

Lego Movie’s Phil Lord & Chris Miller Plan Animated Spider-Man Movie

April 23, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

phil-lord-and-chris-millerPhil Lord & Chris Miller are kings of taking on ideas that many people thought could never work and turning them into massively successful film, whether it’s Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs, 21 Jump Street or The Lego Movie. Now they’re hoping to do it again, as Sony has revealed they’re working on an animated Spider-man film.

It means the studio is hoping to have two Spidey franchises running at once, with a live-action Peter Parker joining up with Marvel heroes for Captain America 3 before getting his own stand-alone film, as well as Lord & Miller’s animated take.

There’s no news on exactly how the film will work, but it’s due out July 20th, 2018, with Miller and Lord writing the treatment and producing (it’s not clear whether they’ll also direct), with the press release saying that ‘The film will exist independently of the projects in the live-action Spider-Man universe, all of which are continuing’.

It’ll certainly be interesting to see if it works.

Is Faye Dunaway Trying to Hijack Rutanya Alda’s Mommie Dearest Diaries?

April 22, 2015 By Leon Whiting-Acord 9 Comments

rutanyaslider3With a UK exclusive for BGPS, Old Dogs & New Tricks creator Leon Acord chats to actress Rutanya Alda, giving their take on the cult phenomenon that is Mommie Dearest.

OK, so maybe it took her a while to catch on.

After all, she’s not just “Carol Ann.” Veteran character actress Rutanya Alda has played dozens and dozens of roles in her career, in such famous films as The Deer Hunter, Last Exit to Brooklyn, When a Stranger Calls and the cult hit Amityville II, as well as guest roles in almost every TV show that’s shot in New York City since the mid-1980s [and, in the interest of full disclosure, a recent guest-starring stint on my web series Old Dogs & New Tricks].

But it wasn’t until May 11, 2013, as actress Rutanya Alda was being honored at San Francisco’s historic Castro Theatre, that she realized Mommie Dearest—the Faye Dunaway vehicle in which Alda had played Joan Crawford’s faithful maid—had a huge gay cult following. [Read more…]

Avengers: Age of Ultron (Cinema Review)

April 22, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Robert Downey Jr., Chris Hemsworth, Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo, Scarlett Johansson
Director: Joss Whedon
Running Time: 141 mins
Certificate: 12A
Release Date: April 23rd 2015

Marvel must have been licking their lips when some genius came up with the idea of throwing all of their superheroes into one film to fight against evil. However The Avengers was a gargantuan success, becoming the third highest grossing movie ever. Now comes the sequel, Age Of Ultron, which has a lot to live up to. The result is a series of brilliantly executed set pieces, but inevitably the characters get lost in the mayhem and some of the actors look like they’d rather be elsewhere.

The plot is a cut and paste job about the evil Ultron, who is fed up with humans ruining their planet, and reasons it’s best to wipe them out – after all they’ve had a fair go. It’s actually a pretty good argument, but we’re supposed to be on the side of the Avengers, who must protect Earth from the evil robot and his army of automatons. [Read more…]

The Hobbit: The Battle Of The Five Armies (Blu-ray Review)

April 22, 2015 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

Starring: Martin Freeman, Richard Armitage, Ian McKellen, Ken Stott, Orlando Bloom
Director: Peter Jackson
Running Time: 144 mins
Certificate: 12
Release Date: April 20th 2015 (UK)

The Battle Of The Five Armies certainly doesn’t want to give you time to settle in. Indeed it appears that in Peter Jackson’s mind he wasn’t making three movies, he was creating one enormously long one, as the final part of the trilogy jumps straight in without even the vaguest hint of a recap or a desire to allow the audience to catch their breath.

Nope, the dragon Smaug is on his way to attack Laketown and only Luke Evan’s Bard the Bowman can stop them. That part of the plot is wrapped up pretty quickly, leaving two full hours for the battle of the title and its build-up. Thorin (Richard Armitage) has holed himself up in his ancestral home in the Misty Mountain, but like his forefathers, having control of the vast dwarvish treasure immediately sends him nuts, with the gold causing him to betray his friends and isolate himself from all those around him. Gay Short Film Showcase: Long Exposure – A Short Film on American Sexuality (NSFW)

April 21, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

long-exposureSometimes you don’t need a long time to make a good point. Long Exposure is only two minutes long but even so it makes you think – while also raising the blood pressure with its focus on a barely-dressed man whose face we never seen.

Jamie Webster’s film follow a guy’s beauty regime as he attempts to fit into the modern world’s definition of male perfection – although it’s only at the end that we really understand what all his efforts are for, and why he feels all the moisturising and exercises are necessary.

It’s certainly got a point to make in a world becoming ever more populated by websites and apps where, if you don’t have the right look, you might as well be invisible.

Take a look at Long Exposure below.

Original X-Men Character Iceman Comes Out As Gay

April 21, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Iceman-x-men-Days-of-Future-PastIn the last few years the X-Men comics have been fairly LGBT inclusive, but the gay or bisexual characters have all been characters only fans would know well. However that’s now changed as leaked pages from the latest issue of All-New X-Men reveals that Bobby ‘Iceman’ Drake is gay.

As you can see in the leaked pages below, his secret is semi-forced out of him by Jean Grey, although he seems more relieved than angry.

All-New X-Men centres on Professor Xavier’s first five students – Cyclops, Beast, Angel, Iceman and Jean Grey – who as teenagers are transported into the future and forced to face who they eventually become. What becomes particularly interesting about Bobby’s revelation is that in the future he doesn’t seem to be gay, so perhaps this is a hint that they are able to change how things turn out.

In the X-Men movies Iceman was played by Shawn Ashmore, and while he certainly wasn’t gay in the film, Shawn’s identical twin Aaron did play the gay Agent Jinks in the sci-fi TV show Warehouse 13. [Read more…]
