My Friend Dahmer (Cinema Review) – The infamous gay serial killer as a teen

May 30, 2018 By George Elcombe Leave a Comment

Starring: Ross Lynch, Alex Wolff, Anne Heche
Director: Marc Meyers
Running Time: 107 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: June 1st 2018

Often I like to watch films that I know nothing about besides the title so that it doesn’t taint my viewing experience, but having seen this movie I feel that having prior knowledge of the protagonist’s horrific crimes would have enabled me to have gotten more out of this film.

Having grown up in England and not having an interest in serial killers, I had never really heard of Jeffrey Dahmer and the 17 men and boys he murdered between 1978 and 1991. I read his Wikipedia page after seeing this movie and it shed a lot of light upon things that were hinted at, both subtly and explicitly, throughout the film. [Read more…]

Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri (DVD Review) – Robbed of the Best Picture Oscar?

May 30, 2018 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Frances McDormand, Woody Harrelson, Sam Rockwell, Caleb Landry Jones, Lucas Hedges
Director: Martin McDonagh
Running Time: 110 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: Out Now

For many Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri seemed to be the smart bet to win the Best Picture Oscar. While The Shape Of Water had made the early running, Three Billboards gained momentum through the Award season and seemed like it might cruise to a victory. In the end it didn’t get the big gong, although it did win for the exceptionally strong performance of Frances McDormand and Sam Rockwell. Many were also surprised it lost for writer/director Martin McDonagh’s screenplay, although it is a couple of issues with that screenplay that may be the reason it didn’t win the biggest award.

McDormand plays the hard-bitten Mildred, a woman filled with anger at the local police’s inability to catch whoever was responsible for the rape and murder of her daughter. To try and force the authorities into action she hires three billboards on a rural road, putting up massive posters asking why there have been no arrests and specifically calling out police chief Willoughby (Woody Harrelson). The Post (Blu-ray Review) – Spielberg, Streep & Hanks stand up for press freedom

May 30, 2018 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Meryl Streep, Tom Hanks, Sarah Paulson, Bob Odenkirk
Director: Steven Spielberg
Running Time: 111
Certificate: 12
Release Date: May 21st 2018 (UK)

He may be in his 70s but Steven Spielberg shows no signs of slowing down. He managed to slot in The Post while simultaneously making Ready Player One, something most directors half his age wouldn’t even contemplate let alone succeed at.

The Post is a bit of an old school flick, set in the 1970s and telling the story of the Pentagon Papers, a leaked set of documents that revealed that while in public the military and government was still positive about the war in Vietnam, privately many felt that it was unwinnable and that official finding bore this out. The authorities from President Richard Nixon downwards unsurprisingly didn’t want this made public, while the press felt it was imperative to publish it. [Read more…]

Batman Ninja (Blu-ray Review) – The title pretty much says it all!

May 30, 2018 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Roger Craig Smith, Grey Griffin, Tony Hale, Tara Strong, Adam Croasdell
Director: Junpei Mizusaki
Running Time: 85 mins
Certificate: 12
Release Date: May 14th 2018 (UK)

‘Batman Ninja’ is a title that sounds like the fever dream of a six-year-old, but it’s not inaccurate for this latest DC animated movie. The film takes the Caped Crusader to Japan and into full-on anime mode, as this was produced and animated in the Land Of The Rising Sun. As the Japanese production company behind the film says in the special features, they were allowed to make a movie where Batman was essentially a guest in their country and had to adapt to their way of doing things, rather than the other way around. As a result this is a Japanese film with Batman in it, rather a Batman film set in Japan.

In the film, after an incredibly quick setup Batman is mysteriously thrown back in time after something goes wrong with the villainous Gorilla Grodd’s time displacement machine. The Caped Crusader finds himself in medieval Japan, but one that’s got a few problems as the time machine also sent a Rogues Gallery of Gotham’s bad guys into the past. Those villains arrived two years before Batman, which has given the likes of Joker, Poison Ivy, Bane and Penguin time to start gaining control of Japan, using their futuristic knowledge and evil skulduggery to control the locals. May 25, 2018 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

The film opens in Paris, where Wilde, by now in his forties, penniless and in poor health, is still reeling after being imprisoned in England for his love affair with Lord Alfred ‘Bosie’ Douglas (Morgan). Out of prison but a pariah, Wilde swings between grief and a determination to wrest whatever pleasure and beauty he can from the time he has left. His body ailing and heavy, his mind spinning, he survives by falling back on the flamboyant irony and brilliant wit that defined him.

Everett’s Wilde is tortured but determined to remain true to himself. His thoughts are filled with love and betrayal and permeated with those closest to him: Bosie, his literary agent Robbie Ross (Edwin Thomas), his great friend Reggie Turner (Firth) and his estranged wife Constance (Watson).

As the film travels through Wilde’s final act, and journeys from England to France and Italy, desire and loyalty face off, the transience of lust is laid bare, and the true riches of love are revealed.

May 23, 2018 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

From actor, underwear model and all round hottie Max Emerson comes Hooked, which marks his multi-hyphenate feature debut as a writer, director and producer. He’s certainly showing he’s a man of many talents, and a generous one, as some of the film’s profits have been earmarked for LGBTQ charities.

Here’s the Synopsis: ‘A poignant, moving debut feature from writer/director Max Emerson. Conor Donnally, Jay Alan Christianson, and Jared Sandler star in Hooked. Eighteen-year-old hustler Jack and his boyfriend Tom are an item, close and very much in love. However, Jack tends to be very impulsive with his body and emotionally explosive. Matt, a married man who hasn’t come out of the closet, decides to take Jack from NYC to Miami with the intention of helping him before it’s too late.

‘Not just a cautionary tale of life on the streets, HOOKED is proud to announce that a percentage of the profits from the film will be donated to non-profits and partner organizations to support the homeless LGBTQ youth demographic. Partner organizations include the Ali Forney Center, the Los Angeles LGBT Center, Albert Kennedy Trust (UK), Lost and Found, and GLAAD.’

GLAAD Suggests Hollywood’s LGBTQ Representation Is Getting Worse

May 23, 2018 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Tessa Thompson as Valkyrie in Thor: Ragnarok

Hollywood has a reputation as a enclave of gay-loving liberals. However, while that may be true of many of the people involved in the mainstream film industry, the level of LGBTQ in Hollywood movies has made very little progress over the past decade, and GLAAD’s just released Studio Responsibility Index suggests that 2017 saw a marked regression. Of the 109 releases by the seven largest movie studios in 2017, just 14, or 12.8 percent, included LGBTQ characters. That’s down from 23 last year and ties for the smallest number of movies including representation since GLAAD starting tracking in 2012.

All of the major studio were graded as Poor, or Insufficient, while Warner Brothers was seen to be Failing. No studio has ever been rated Excellent since the Studio Responsibility Index started. GLAAD noted that of the films that included some sort of LGBTQ representation or touched on LGBTQ issues, that included films where queer people or situations were the butt of the joke (such as Baywatch), where it was barely visible (such as Beauty & The Beast – although GLAAD did see the inclusion of Lefou being gay as a step in the right direction), and where it’s purely a brief plot device (such as Downsizing).

There are also some, such as Thor: Ragnarok, which the movie include characters who are LGBTQ in the comics (notably Valkyrie and Korg), but where the film makes virtually no reference to it at all. Even though Valkyrie actor Tessa Thompson has said the character is bisexual and scenes were filmed that made this clearer, they didn’t make it into the final movie.

Perhaps most shockingly, not a single studio release included a transgender character in 2017, despite indie distributors having Oscar-winning success with the likes of A Fantastic Woman. GLAAD did note however some progress with racial diversity, as for the first time over 50% of LGBTQ characters were people of colour, compared to under 30% in 2016 and 2015.

From their findings, GLAAD noted that, ‘Studios must do better to include more LGBTQ characters, and construct those stories in a way that is directly tied to the film’s plot,’ and that, ‘Filmmakers should work to reflect the full diversity of our community, and include the long-sidelined stories of those living at the intersections of many identities.’ They also particularly felt that with comic book movies being such a dominant force in mainstream film and popular culture – and with a strong record of LGBTQ diversity on the page – studios ought to do far better in terms of queer representation on screen, especially when dealing with canonically LGBTQ characters.

President & CEO of GLAAD, Sarah Kate Ellis, says she wants Hollywood to so much better, writing in her introduction to the Studio Responsibility Index that, “GLAAD is calling on the seven major film studios to make sure that 20% of annual major studio releases include LGBTQ characters by 2021, and that 50% of films include LGBTQ characters by 2024. This is the first step in creating a barometer that will move them from a “Poor” or “Failing” rating, to a “Good” or “Excellent” one.”

Although this may not seem like an unreasonable request, with Hollywood making little progress in LGBTQ representations overall, getting 50% of film to include queer characters by 2014 may be a tough ask. Ellis does note hopeful signs though, saying, “We have started to see some welcome progress in 2018 – major studio films like teen rom-com Love, Simon (Fox 2000), sci-fi action Annihilation (Paramount), and raunchy teen comedy Blockers (Universal) all opened in thousands of theaters across the country and included central queer characters who have agency over their own stories.”

May 22, 2018 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

‘Seventeen-year-old Johan is a small-town boy whose love of British new wave music, and especially Boy George, makes him an easy target for bullying from the neighbourhood kids. When he gets called up for military service, Johan auditions for, and is accepted into, the Canaries— the South African Defence Choir. Initially believing that the choir means he will not be fighting in the war, Johan begins to see the role he plays in the oppression and injustice around him. If that isn’t enough to deal with, Johan is also falling in love with Wolfgang, a fellow Canary.

As Johan’s beliefs about religion, patriotism and sexuality are brought into question, he is left to rely on his emerging creativity and passion for music. And after all, who doesn’t need a dance break from time to time?’
