Lily Tomlin Will Be The First Out Lesbian To Receive The Kennedy Center Honors

September 9, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Lily-tomlinThere is little doubt that the Kennedy Center Honors – given to those in the performing arts for their lifetime contribution – is one of the highest accolades in the US for actors, singers, composers, dancers and other artists. However no openly gay woman has ever been given the award – until now, that is.

It’s been announced that actress and comedian Lily Tomlin will be one of the five recipients of this year’s honors, alongside singer Al Green, actor and filmmaker Tom Hanks, ballerina Patricia McBride, and singer-songwriter Sting.

There have been previous female honorees who’ve been rumoured to be gay or bisexual, but Tomlin will be first one who out, and certainly the first one married to another woman.

It’s perhaps particularly surprising as the Kennedy Center hasn’t shied away from honoring gay and bisexual men, ranging from Tennessee Williams to Elton John, but for some reason no openly lesbian has previously been given the award.

Kennedy Center chairman David M. Rubenstein comments, “From the days of her early television and theatrical appearances, Lily Tomlin has made us laugh and continues to amaze us with her acting talent and quick wit.”

The Kennedy Center Honors medallions willbe presented on Saturday, December 6th, at a State Department dinner hosted by Secretary of State John Kerry. On the Sunday there will be a White House Reception where Tomlin and co. will meet the President ahead of the Honors Gala in the evening, which will be recorded for a two-hour primetime TV special to be braodcast on Tuesday, December 30th at 9:00 pm.

First Look At A Super-Bearded (& Shirtless) Chris Pine, Patrick Wilson & More In Joe Carnahan’s Stretch

September 9, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

stretch-pic5-slideJoe Carnahan may have dabbled in the world of blockbusters with The A-Team, but it looks like he’s going for something far more idiosyncratic with Stretch – at least that’s what that first pics released via the film’s Twitter account suggest.

It also gives Chris Pine the chance to find out what he would look like as a crazy-bearded man who spends all day at the gym, while Patrick Wilson gets a subtle hint about what people think of him (just see what we mean below), while Jessica Alba channels her inner nerd by following the movie rule that glasses and a ponytail = plain girl.

Wilson plays the central role of a downtrodden man who takes a job as a limo driver to pay off his gambling debts. His first client is an eccentric billionaire (Chris Pine), whose bizarre requests take a toll on the driver’s sanity throughout one crazy night.

Ed Helms, Brooklyn Decker, James Badge Dale, David Hasselhoff, Ray Liotta, and Shaun Toub are amongst the strong supporting cast.

It’s not clear when the low-budget film will hit cinemas. [Read more…]

Out Filmmaker Todd Haynes Takes On Reese Witherspoon’s Peggy Lee Biopic

September 9, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Todd-HaynesBack in 2010 Reese Witherspoon revealed she wanted to go back into the world of music biopics which had served her with Walk The Line, as she started developing a movie about Peggy Lee that your also planned to star in.

It’s taken a long time, but now the film has inched forward with the news that Todd Haynes (I’m Not There, Far From Heaven) is set to direct.

Nora Ephron was previously attached to write and direct, but her death in 2014 put the project into  although the project stalled after she passed away in June 2012. Since then Doug Wright (Quills, Two Lovers) has been working on the screenplay though.

It’s not known exactly what direction the movie will take as Peggy Lee’s story doesn’t come with the usual trappings of a musical biopic, such as drug addiction and early death. However she was an incredible force in the incredibly male dominated music world, scoring no. 1s not just as a singer, but also by writing hits for other artists and becoming a mentor and inspiration to everyone from Frank Sinatra to Paul McCartney.

She also wasn’t afraid to change, starting off as a big band singer, moving through jazz, and doing covers of rock ‘n’ roll songs when they became popular. She also acted, including voicing several characters in Lady & The Tramp.

The openly gay Haynes first made his name as a leading light in the New Queer Cinema movement in the 1990s, thanks to films such as Poison, [Safe] and Velvet Goldmine. He also found huge acclaim for his 2011 mini-series version of Mildred Pierce, starring Kate Winslet.

United Queendom Web Series Arrives – Take a look at Scottish independence turned into a gay rom com

September 8, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

united-queendom-ep1Last week we posted the trailers for the fun-looking gay-themed web series United Queedom, which reimagines the debate over Scottish Independence as a romantic comedy between two guys who have to decide whether to split up.

Now the four episodes of the show have arrived, which you can watch below.

Bob Denham came up with the show, which stars Damien Hughes as Scott and Daniel Page as Adrian, who bicker and squabble over all sorts of things, all of which take a metaphorical look at the issues voters have to decide on in the Scottish Independence poll in a couple of weeks time.

And just to make sure it’s like the real thing (sort of) at the end viewers are invited to vote on whether Scott and Adrian should indeed split up.

It’s a lot of fun, so take a look at the episodes in the playlist below. [Read more…]

Pasolini Trailer – Willem Dafoe & Abel Ferrara take on the life of the renowned gay director

September 8, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

willem-dafoe-pasolini2It was back in March that the first images from Abel Ferrera’s Pasolini emerged, but it’s only now that the first people have got to see the film, with screenings at the Venice and Toronto Film Festivals, and a trailer that you can watch right here.

The film concentrates of the final days of director, writer and provocateur Pier Paolo Pasolini (Willem Dafoe), with the film trying to piece together who this complicated figure was in the lead up to his murder.

Pasolini grew up Mussolini’s Italy (his father actually saved the dictator’s life), before becoming a communist. However he was thrown out of the Party after being charged with committing lewd acts in a public place, which was the first of several legal battles, partly based on the Italian government’s initial antipathy to him.

Those lewd act charges also meant that he was out as gay whether he wanted to be or not.

Pasolini became a renowned but controversial director, helming films such as The Decameron, The Gospel According to Matthew and Salo Or The 120 Days Of Sodom. Although he had a rather complex relationship with his sexuality and his work, he was known for liking to cruise the streets of Italy looking for furtive sex.

Tragically in 1975 he was murdered. A 17-year-old rent boy was convicted of the crime, but in recent years there has been speculation he was killed as part of an extortion plot or due to anger at his communist leanings.

Take a look at the trailer below. [Read more…]

JK Rowling Shows She Has No Time For Homophobic Harry Potter Fans

September 8, 2014 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

JK-RowlingJK Rowling isn’t exactly the most prolific tweeter, but she isn’t afraid to let her feelings be known if she’s in the mood, and that includes schooling homophobes on where they can stick their opinions.

A Twitter user called @halfelven55ff probably thought he was merely merely ranting into the ether when he wrote ‘@jk_rowling Once u revealed Dumbledore was homosexual I stopped being a fan. Nice how u blindsided us with that one. Enjoy your billion $.’

However Rowling saw it and responded, ‘@halfelven55ff I advise you to start following Brian Souter at once. He’s much more your kind of person.’

Souter is a Scottish businessman and owner of the Stagecoach Bus Group, who drew the ire of many when he spent over £1 million of his own money attempting to retain a clause in Scottish law that essentially forbade the mention of anything LGBT in schools. That, along with other controversial statements, have understandably caused many to see him as a homophobe.

He’s also given money and campaigned for a ‘yes’ vote in the upcoming Scottish Independence Election, with Rowling amongst the most prominent names in the ‘no’ campaign.

In case you were wondering, @halfelven55ff, doesn’t seem to have enjoyed the response to his tweet as he’s now removed his Twitter page completely. [Read more…]

Neil Patrick Harris & David Burtka Have Officially Tied The Knot

September 8, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

neil-patrick-harris-david-burtkaIt just shows how times have changed when you hear the news that a same sex couple got married, and you’re confused because you thought they’d already gotten hitched. However the news has come through that the always wonderful Neil Patrick Harris & David Burtka got married in Italy over the weekend.

Harris announced the news with the slightly cheesy tweet, ‘Guess what? @DavidBurtka and I got married over the weekend. In Italy. Yup, we put the ‘n’ and ‘d’ in ‘husband’.’

And just to make sure things were suitably gay, Elton John performed at the wedding reception. The ceremony itself was officiated by How I Met Your Mother producer and director Pam Fryman.

Same sex marriage is not recognised in Italy (they don’t even have civil unions), but we’re sure NPH and his new hubby have got that sorted, something that’s now possible due to the federal recognition of gay marriage in the US.

Only a few weeks ago the couple were having to deny tabloid rumours that they’d split up – but now they’ve shown that nothing could be further from the truth.

Michael C. Hall Set To Be Broadway’s Next Hedwig

September 8, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

michael-c-hall-hedwig-slideWhat was initially thought to be a limited run for Hedwig & The Angry Inch on Broadway is fast becoming a bit of a long-runner, with actors lining up to take on the show’s title role. It’s not surprising there are plenty interested in following in Neil Patrick Harris and Andrew Rannells’ footsteps, as Hedwig allows them to rock out and be outrageous in a show that’s completely centred around them.

So who will take over when Rannells’ run ends? It’s been announced that it’s be none other than Dexter himself, Michael C. Hall, who steps back into the world of LGBT after his great gay character in Six Feet Under.

Hall will play the role from October 16th through to January 4th at Broadway’s Belasco Theater.

While the actor made his name in theatre before Six Feet Under, but he hasn’t had been on the stage since playing Billy Flynn in Chicago back in 2002.

Now we just want to see what he looks like in the Hedwig makeup.

The Boy Next Door Trailer – Jennifer Lopez goes cougar for Ryan Guzman

September 8, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

boy-next-door-slideJennifer Lopez seems to have accepted she’s not 21 anymore (it took her a while), as she’s turning cougar for The Boy Next Door, although it looks like this might be a bit of a cautionary tale about underestimating the obsessions of youth.

The film is about a woman (Lopez) who’s separated from her husband and becomes attracted to the teenage boy who moves in next door (Step Up’s Ryan Guzman), even though the young new neighbour becomes friends with her son. After briefly striking up a romance with the boy, she breaks it off abruptly, only to realise how obsessed he has become with her.

Rob Cohen directs from a screenplay by Barbara Curry. It’s due out in the UK March 2015. Take a look at the trailer below. [Read more…]
