Blair Witch (Blu-ray Review) – Back into the supernatural Black Hills woods for more found footage

January 22, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Brandon Scott, Callie Hernandez, Corbin Reid, James Allen McCune, Wes Robinson
Director: Adam Wingard
Running Time: 89 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: January 23rd 2017 (UK)

When it was announced at Comic Con that Adam Wingard’s The Woods (which already had a bit of hype about it even though no one knew much about it) was actually a sequel to The Blair Witch Project, it seemed a bit of a masterstroke of marketing. Immediately a movie that might otherwise have elicited shrugs and accusations of cashing in on a dead franchise, instead jumped to the top of horror fanboys interest lists.

Now though it’s starting to seem like it might have worked a little too well, as it raised the hype level so high that unless the actual movie turned out to be a surprising and zeitgeist-capturing as the original 1999 film, it was bound to be seen as disappointing. And that’s just what happened when it was released in cinemas, with most people seeing it as more of remake than a sequel – and it was actually outgrossed by the almost universally derided earlier follow-up, Book Of Shadows. Gay Short Film Showcase: Bed Buddies – Three friends work out what’s next after they all sleep together

January 22, 2017 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

Have you ever slept with a friend and then wondered whether a comparatively short bit of fun might change your relationship forever? It’s something a lot of gay guys have faced, and that’s the subject of Bed Buddies, from director Reid Waterer. In it, three guys wake up in bed together, then try to figure out whether their wild night out means anything or not – and perhaps whether a throuple is a possibility.

Having screened at over 25 film festivals, it’s now available on Youtube, and you can take a look at it below.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘BED BUDDIES stars Dylan Wayne Lawrence, Daniel Lipshutz, Enzo Nova, and Colin Van Wye.

Director Reid Waterer, whose previous shorts have screened in over 200 film festivals, says he thought it would be interesting to explore a dilemma unique to gay men and lesbians – that the group of people we tend to hang out with as friends is the same group we’re also attracted to sexually. This is different from straight people, who can form lifelong friendships with people of the same sex without ever having to question whether they were meant to be romances instead.

‘He was also inspired by the fact that during the marriage equality debate, opponents frequently claimed that if gay marriage were allowed, it could open the door to polygamy. He began to wonder why that was such a concern. BED BUDDIES tries to examine the issue with no agenda or simple answers.

‘The film is shot primarily in lush black & white, but includes two color sequences that Waterer says represent the heightened senses we feel during times of sexual anticipation and arousal. Returning to black & white represents the considerably clearer view of things we often have after these moments.

‘NSFW for shirtless underwear scenes, racy lovemaking images, and raunchy language.’

Charlie Hunnam Gets A New King Arthur: Legend Of The Sword Poster

January 22, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

The signs for King Arthur: Legend Of The Sword haven’t been great, with title changes and the release date being pushed back several time. However, the one bright spot is that while it initially looked like Warner might try to bury the movie with a spring graveyard release, it’s now been pushed into the major summer season with a May release set.

To help get us prepared, a new poster featuring Charlie Hunnam as King Arthur has arrived.

Here’s the movie’s synopsis: ‘Acclaimed filmmaker Guy Ritchie brings his dynamic style to the epic fantasy action adventure “King Arthur: Legend of the Sword.” Starring Charlie Hunnam in the title role, the film is an iconoclastic take on the classic Excalibur myth, tracing Arthur’s journey from the streets to the throne.

‘When the child Arthur’s father is murdered, Vortigern (Jude Law), Arthur’s uncle, seizes the crown. Robbed of his birthright and with no idea who he truly is, Arthur comes up the hard way in the back alleys of the city. But once he pulls the sword from the stone, his life is turned upside down and he is forced to acknowledge his true legacy…whether he likes it or not.

‘Starring with Hunnam (FX’s “Sons of Anarchy”) and Oscar nominee Law (“Cold Mountain,” “The Talented Mr. Ripley”) are Astrid Bergès-Frisbey (“Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides”) as Mage; Oscar nominee Djimon Hounsou (“Blood Diamond,” “In America”) as Bedivere; Aidan Gillen (HBO’s “Game of Thrones”) as Goosefat Bill; and Eric Bana (“Star Trek”) as Arthur’s father, King Uther Pendragon.’

James Cameron Bringing In Deadpool Director Tim Miller For New Terminator Movie

January 22, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

After Terminator 2, the franchise has struggled. The rights have been passed around, with each new owner hoping they could bring it back to life, but each coming up with a film that audiences met with a shrug. What many thought was missing was James Cameron.

However,Cameron will be getting the rights back to many parts of the franchise in 2019, and it looks like he’s planning to get a new Terminator movie made when he does. He’s teaming up with David Ellison’s Skydance Productions, which currently owns the rights (and will retain rights to aspects of Terminator created after the first movie) to create something which is currently being described as a conclusion for the franchise. Unsurprisingly, as he’s got four Avatar sequels to make, he won’t be directing the film, with Deadline reporting that he’s hoping to bring in Deadpool helmer Tim Miller to direct it.

Cameron will be involved though, acting in a ‘godfather’ capacity, to help ensure that the story, script and production stay on track. There is no news though on what the film will be, or whether Arnold Schwarzenegger will be involved in any way.

Cameron has previously been involved in books and comics that followed the T2 continuity, ignoring the movies that followed, so it’s possible this film will do the same. Indeed, with its time travel premise, the continuity of the series has got so convoluted, it wouldn’t be difficult to find a way to wipe out everything post T2 (which Genisys sort of did anyway).

At the moment the film is several years away, so currently the possibilities for it are wide open.

Anne Hathaway May Join Rebel Wilson In Female Dirty Rotten Scoundrels Remake

January 22, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Last August, it was revealed that Rebel Wilson was attached to a gender-swapped remake of the 1998 Steve Martin and Michael Caine comedy. Now it’s been reported that they may have found the person to play opposite Rebel, as Anne Hathaway is in talks for the role according to THR.

In the original movie, Caine and Martin played con artists, one unsophisticated and one suave, who join forces on the French Riviera to take down a big target, before turning on one another with a bet that will see the loser having to leave town. The remake is apparently titled Nasty Women, with a script by Jac Schaeffer. The basic idea will stay the same, with the con artists being socially mismatched, but this time they’ll be teaming up to con a tech prodigy out of his money.

No director or release date has been announced as yet. Hathaway must enjoy the con artist world, as she’s currently shooting Ocean’s 8, which sees George Clooney and co. replaced by a group of women going off on a heist.

Dwayne Johnson Is Getting A Black Adam Standalone Movie As Well As Shazam

January 22, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

It’s well over two years ago that it was first announced that Dwayne Johnson was attached to play the villainout Black Adam in an adaptation of DC Comics’ Shazam. While Warner has been busy on other parts of its DC Universe, we haven’t heard too much about the movie, but it turns out they’ve decided to expand that with Johnson now one of the biggest stars in the world, they ought to give Shazam and more particularly Black Adam a bit more attention.

Deadline reports that as well as Shazam, Warner/DC is now also planning a standalone Black Adam movie.

Shazam (also known as Captain Marvel, although you can see why they’ve avoided that name) is the superhero alter-ego of a boy called Billy Batson. The hero has the powers of Solomon, Hercules, Atlas, Zeus, Achilles, and Mercury. While not particularly well known today outside comic book circles, he was the biggest selling character of the 1940s.

Black Adam meanwhile first appeared in 1945 as Teth-Adam of Kahndaq. He was originally a villain, but slowly transformed into an anti-hero who matches Shazam in strength, agility and fighting. He also knows magic. Due to his switch from bad to semi-good, it gives plenty of room for a movie with him at the centre, especially as DC showed with the commercial (if not criticial) success of Suicide Squad that you can have the baddies as the heroes.

No date has been announced for Black Adam, but Shazam is currently set for April 2019.

The Return Of Will & Grace Officially Confirmed For 10-Episode New Season

January 18, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

For several months there’s been a lot of talk about whether NBC would bring back Will & Grace for a new season. The US TV network started thinking about it shortly after the success of a pro-Hillary mini-episode that got the cast back together in October.

By December Megan Mullally said the revival had a “A Very Good Chance” of happening, then last month guest star Leslie Jordan seemed to confirm it was definitely happening for 10 new episodes. However, the next day Grace herself, Debra Messing, put the brakes on by saying nothing was confirmed and at that point it was still all just talk.

Now though, it’s been officially announced that Will & Grace will return, with NBC commissioning 10 fresh episodes. Most of the key original cast and crew have signed up to return, with Eric McCormack, Debra Messing, Megan Mullally and Sean Hayes all on-board, as well as creators/executive producers Max Mutchnick and David Kohan. Just as importantly yhe  man who directed every single episode of the original eight seasons, James Burrows, will return to do the  same for Season 9.

The new episodes are currently set to air sometime during the 2017/2018 season. And just to confirm they’re not kidding, NBC has released the short video you can see below, to help whet our appetite.
