Damian Lewis Will Be Getting Villainous In Ocean’s Eight

December 7, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

A great cast including Sandra Bullock, Cate Blanchett, Anne Hathaway, Rihanna, Helena Bonham Carter, Mindy Kaling, Sarah Paulson and Awkwafina has already been lined up to be the female thieves in Ocean’s Eight. However, the heist team needs someone to go up against, and now they’ve found them in the form of Damian Lewis.

Variety reports that he’s in final talks to play the villain in the movie. Plot details are still being kept secret, so it’s not known exactly what Lewis will be doing, but he’ll presumably be causing trouble for Bullock and co. Dakota Johnson also stars, while Matt Damon is reported to be making a cameo, to help connect the film to the other Ocean’s movie.

Hunger Games helmer Gary Ross recently started shooting the movie New York. Steven Soderbergh, who directed the Ocean’s 11 trilogy, will produce.

Jurassic World’s Nick Robinson In Talks For Greg Berlanti’s Gay-Themed Movie, Simon Vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda

December 6, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

nick-robinson-jurassic-worldBack in September it was announced that Arrow-verse producer Greg Berlanti was planning to head for the movie world and direct a film based on Becky Albertalli’s young adult best-seller Simon Vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda. Now the movie may have found its star, as THR reports that Jurassic World and The 5th Wave’s Nick Robinson is in talks to play the lead role.

The film will follow Simon, ‘a gay teen who has not come out to his classmates. But when an email he sent to a boy (that he’s never met) falls into the wrong hands, he finds himself in a complicated situation when he’s blackmailed by the class clown.’ His blackmailer wants Simon to play cupid for him, but the teen is more interested in finding a way to come out to friends and family in a way where it doesn’t feel he’s being forced out.

Isaac Aptaker and Elizabeth Berger wrote the script for the movie, although it’s not clear when it might shoot. The likelihood is that with Berlanti still busy on his DC TV series, it will begin lensing once the latest seasons of Arrow, Flash, Legends Of Tomorrow and Supergirl have wrapped in the Spring.

Me, Myself & Her (US DVD Review)

December 4, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Margherita Buy, Sabrina Ferilli, Fausto Maria Sciarappa, Alessia Barela, Domenico Diele
Director: Maria Sole Tognazzi
Running Time: 102 mins
Certificate: NR
Release Date: December 6th 2016 (US)

Me Myself & Her is billed as Italy’s first feature-length, lesbian-themed romantic comedy, although I might take issue with that, as it’s not what I’d normally think of as a rom com. I can see why they’d class it as that, but I’d more put it in the bracket of a light-hearted drama, as it didn’t exactly spend a lot of time trying to be funny, except for a few fairly amusing moments (particularly a scenes involving a dinner with one of the main character’s families).

In the movie, middle-aged Marina (Sabrina Ferilli) and Federica (Margherita Buy) have been together for a few years and are living in what seems like cosy domesticity. However, they may be ignoring a few glaring problems, which begind surface when Federica objects to the fact former actress Marina vaguely mentioned her in an interview. Federica still isn’t comfortable with her sexuality and doesn’t want the world at large knowing about her, something Marina has been assiduously ignoring, assuming that her lover would eventually just accept she’s a lesbian and come to terms with it. shared-rooms-dvd-coverThe gay-themed festive movie Shared Rooms is out in the UK on DVD and VoD on December 5th, courtesy of TLA Releasing. We’ve teamed up with them to give away three copies in this competition.

Shared Rooms explores the meaning of home and family through three interrelated stories of gay men finding connections during the week between Christmas and New Year’s Day – a married couple who take in a teenage relative who was kicked out of his home after his parents discovered he was gay; a pair of roommates forced to share a bed for the week, much to the delight (and horror) of the one harboring a secret crush on the other; and two men looking for a quick hookup who end up finding a much stronger connection. Win The Explicit, Gay-Themed Theo & Hugo On DVD!

December 4, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

theo-and-hugo-dvd-coverWe loved Theo & Hugo when we reviewed it for its cinema release. Not it’s heading to DVD, Blu-ray & VoD in the UK from December 5th, courtesy of Peccadillo Pictures. We’ve teamed up with them to give away three copies in this competition.

Théo and Hugo encounter each other’s bodies one night in a Paris sex club. Wanting to know more about each other, they leave the club and drift down the deserted streets of nocturnal Paris. Suddenly they find themselves confronted by a sense of reality that wipes out their freedom and lends each step an existential helplessness. Do they want to know more about each other? Will their trust be rewarded? What are their expectations?

Olivier Ducastel and Jacques Martineau (Drôle de Félix, Born in 68) deliver their most ambitious film yet, displaying a consummate sensitivity in bringing us closer to two men as they strive for intimacy in spite of being stalled by their insecurity.

Kiss Me, Kill Me (US DVD/VoD Review)

December 4, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Van Hansis, Gale Harold, Matthew Ludwinski, Brianna Brown, Jai Rodriguez
Director: Casper Andreas
Running Time: 100 mins
Certificate: NR
Release Date: December 7th 2016

A few years ago, gay-themed thrillers were something of a rarity. While they’re not exactly common now, we have had an increasing amount recently. Now we have another with Kiss Me Kill Me, from Casper Andreas, who heads in a different direction from previous efforts such as The Big Gay Musical, and Going Down in LA-LA Land.

The film is also noted for being the first queer project for Gale Harold (or as the film properly titles him, Gale M. Harold III) since the US version of Queer As Folk. Alongside him there’s Van Hansis (a four-time Emmy nominee for As The World Turns) along with his Eastsiders co-star Kit Williamson, Big Gay Love & Gayby’s Jonathan Lisecki, Queer Eye’s Jai Rodriguez, Devious Maid’s Brianna Brown, The Get Down’s Yolanda Ross, and LA-LA Land & Seek’s Matthew Ludwinski. It may not have the star power of Ocean’s 11, but there are certainly a lot more recognisable faces than your average gay-themed movie. [Read more…]

Suicide Squad – Extended Cut (Blu-ray Review)

December 4, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Will Smith, Joel Kinnaman, Viola Davis, Margot Robbie, Jared Leto
Director: David Ayer
Running Time: 134 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: December 5th 2016 (UK)

Suicide Squad may have been this year’s most anticipated movie. After the underwhelming Man Of Steel and the ho-hum Batman vs. Superman, the trailers made it look like this was the fun, mischievous shot-in-the-arm that the DC Universe needed to really get it up and running, as well as being a counterpoint to the Marvel movies but which wouldn’t be as dour as the previous DC films. However, when the reviews came in, it was generally agreed by the critics the movie was a messy misfire (although it did okay at the box office).

Now it’s coming to Blu-ray and VoD in Extended Cut form, which adds in 10-minutes of extra footage. As with the Ultimate Edition of Batman vs. Superman, the extra scenes do help, but they’re unlikely to change anyone’s overall opinion of the movie. [Read more…]

Gypsy: The Musical (DVD Review)

December 4, 2016 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

Starring: Dan Burton, Gemma Sutton, Imelda Staunton, Laura Pulver, Peter Davison
Director: Lonny Price
Running Time: 135 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: November 28th 2016 (UK)

The late 1950s was one hell of a time for American musicals, with the likes of West Side Story, My Fair Lady, The Sound Of Music and Gypsy all debuting on Broadway. While all of them have been held up by different people as the greatest musical ever, most agree that the best female mainstream musical role ever written is Rose in Gypsy – indeed, it’s sometimes referred to as the King Lear of musical theatre. Over the years Ethel Merman, Angela Lansbury, Tyne Daly, Bernadette Peters, and Patti LuPone have all played the role on Broadway, while Rosalind Russell appeared in the 1962 film version, and Bette Midler took the part in a 1993 TV movie.

In 2015 it was the turn of Imelda Staunton, fresh from her fabulous, Olivier Award-winning turn in a West End version of Sweeney Todd (before that, few people thought of her as a musical actress, but she’s actually got a long history in the genre, from Into The Woods (for which she won another Olivier back in 1991) to Guys & Dolls. Staunton got rave reviews and another Olivier Award for Gypsy’s limited run at London’s Savoy Theatre, and as this recording of the production proves, it’s easy to see why. [Read more…]
