Chris Columbus Wants To Live Safely In A Sci-Fi Universe

December 5, 2011 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

Since his heyday with the first two Harry Potter movies, Chris Columbus has had a huge amount of success. He did okay with Percy Jackson, but the likes of Rent and I Love You Beth Cooper both tanked. In fact his biggest hit has been The Help, which he only produced.

Now it appears he’s got a new project in the works, which could give him a mainstream hit if it’s done well – although once again he’s just set to produce. THR reports that he’s picked up the rights to Charles Yu’s debut novel, How To Live Safely In A Science Fictional Universe. The book centros on a time travel machine repairman – also named Charles Yu – who has spent the past 10 years travelling back and forth in time in search of his father, who has disappeared. When the fictional Yu falls into a time loop he must find a way to change the future.

The film will be directed by Brendan Bellomo, who is a New York University film school graduate who wrote, produced and directed a cast and crew of 200 for the live action sci-fi short Bohemibot, which won a bronze medal in the narrative category at the 2009 Student Academy Awards. There’s no news on when the movie might go into production.

Naomi Watts On For The Grandmothers

December 5, 2011 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

Naomi Watts is going home, as THR reports that she’s signed on for the Australian movie The Grandmothers, which has just got the greenlight. French director Anne Fontaine (Coco Before Chanel) will direct the movie, which is based on a novel by Aussie Nobel Prize-winner Doris Lessing and has been adapted for the screen by Christopher Hampton (Atonement, A Dangerous Method).

Watts isn’t the only actor onboard, as Robin Wright has signed up for the other main role, in this story of two lifelong friends who cause more than a bit of a scandal with they fall in love with each other’s teenage sons. The sons will be played by Twilight’s Zavier Samuel and Animal Kingdom’s James Frecheville. It’s billed as an ‘erotic tale of misguided love and a celebration of the enduring nature of female friendship’.

Starship Troopers Getting Remade?

December 5, 2011 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

It appears that Hollywood is currently making its way through Paul Verhoeven’s back catalogue and remaking all his best movies. A new take on Total Recall is already in the can, a Robocop remake has long been in development and now it appears they’re thinking about making a new version of Straship Troopers.

Vulture first reported the news, saying that Fast & Furious producer Neil Moritz is the man with the plan, and that he’s hired Thor and X-Men First Class screenwriters Ashley Edward Miller and Zack Stentz to pen the script. It appears Moritz wants to go back to Robert A. Henlein’s book, rather than directly remaking Verhoeven’s film.

That may worry some, as Henlein’s writing is insanely right wing (in a way that most right wing person today would distance themselves from). Indeed Verhoeven’s movie was a rather satirical swipe at the sort of militaristic, bombastic thinking typified by Henlein and his ilk. However the original tale is rather cold and calculated, and a lot less OTT than Verhoeven’s film. An important aspect of the book is the use of power armour, which had to be chopped out of the movie because of costs, but could come back in with a new version.

To be honest, it would be better for Verhoeven’s smart and funny movie to get the dues it’s rather lacked.

Breaking Dawn Tops US Box Office Again

December 5, 2011 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

It was quite an unusual week at the US box office, as no new movies at all made it into the top 10, with older film merely shifting around a little. Things remained exactly the same at the top though, with Twilight: Breaking Dawn – Part 1 in the number 1 slot, despite dropping 60% from last weekend to $16.9 million, while The Muppets stayed at number 2 with an $11.2 million weekend gross.

The only notable new entry was outside the top 10. Many eyes were on Shame and whether the highly acclaimed movie could find box office success, despite getting an adults-only NC-17 rating, which many view as commercial suicide in the US (most companies would prefer to release a movie with no rating that having an NC-17 rating). While it only opened on 10 screens, it took $361,000, giving it by far the highest per-screen average on the chart. All eyes will now be on whether it can continue to do well as it expands onto more screens in the next few weeks.

Take a look below for the US box office top 10 for the weekend of December 2nd-4th.

Rank Title Weekend Gross (millions) Total Gross to date (millions)
1 The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 1 $16.9 $247/3
2 The Muppets $11.2 $56.1
3 Hugo $7.6 $25.1
4 Arthur Christmas $7.3 $25.3
5 Happy Feet Two $6.0 $51.7
6 Jack And Jill $5.5 $64.3
7 The Descendants $5.2 $18.0
8 Immortals $4.3 $75.5
9 Tower Heist $4.1 $70.8
10 Puss In Boots $3.0 $139.5

BGPS’s Advent Calendar Of Buff Blokes: Day 4 – Charlie David

December 4, 2011 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

As I noted in my review of Judas Kiss, if gay cinema had an a-list, Charlie David would be on it. He’s kind of like the Brad Pitt of queer cinema, which is both more and less impressive than it sounds. As a result, it would be rather rude if we hadn’t included him in our Advent Calendar Of Buff Blokes!

David first came to the attention of fans of gay entertainment with the supernatural TV series Dante’s Cove in 2005, before he moved in gay cinema with the likes of A Four Letter Word and Kiss The Bride. Not content with just starring in movies, he turned writer in 2008 with Mulligans, which he also produced and acted in. More recently he produced and starred in Judas Kiss, which came out on DVD a couple of weeks ago.

However most importantly he’s hot, and as the pictures below prove, the 31-year-old isn’t averse to getting him well toned pecs out! So click below to enlarge the images and enjoy the buffness! [Read more…]

BGPS’s Advent Calendar Of Buff Blokes: Day 3 – Zachary Quinto

December 3, 2011 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

The first entries in our advent calendar were actors from recent gay-themed movie, and now it’s time for a man who’s only recently come out as gay, Zachary Quinto. His quiet yet powerful coming out was also a good reminder of what a hottie he is, and just to confirm that, it was great to see him playing gay – and rather camp – on American Horror Story recently (and getting killed by a guy in a all-over rubber gimp suit, no less).

In case you haven’t been paying attention, since Heroes ended Quinto hasn’t just been waiting around to play Spock in a sequel to Star Trek (which shoots early next year, incidentally). He’s turned producer with the movie Margin Call, which he also stars in, alongside Paul Bettany and Kevin Spacey. The movie recently picked up Best First Film for director JC Chandor from the New York Film Critics Circle, so it may do well in the upcoming awards season. It hits UK cinemas on January 12th.

However in our advent calendar we mainly care that he’s pretty, so enjoy our selection of pics of him below, including a few topless and man-on-man snogging shots from the TV show So NoTORIous, which are particularly nice to see. Click below to enlarge the images and underneath that enjoy a video of his getting cover in white, creamy goo. And no, we’re not kidding about that. [Read more…]

First Images From Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters & More

December 3, 2011 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

US magazine Entertainment Weekly is in the fortunate position to be big enough that it very often gets the very first images from movies to show off. Its latest issue has a trio of exclusive first looks – Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters, Wrath Of The Titans and Neighborhood Watch.

The pic above, via EW, is from Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters, which stars Jeremy Renner and Gemma Arterton as grown up versions of the fairy tale characters, who are now in the business of hunting witches. Arterton commented, “You see a series of flashbacks with their experience of killing that first witch, which is brilliant. I remember being on set for the final few days of that. The candy house, and the witches are really repulsive and quite frightening. The make-up is out of this world. It’s this bone-chilling scene. Very dark. The girl who plays my character is brilliant, with the horrified expression she has. This (movie) is about abandonment and being lost and parents leaving you. The heart of it is that these kids grow up to be bloodthirsty witch hunters. It’s a bit tongue in cheek, really. What would Hansel and Gretel be in 15 years time?”

Take a look below for the Neighborhood Watch and Wrath Of The Titans pics, which were scanned from Entertainment Weekly by The Playlist.

Neighborhood Watch stars Ben Stiller, Vince Vaughn, Richard Ayoade and Jonah Hill as guys who put together a home security group as an excuse to hang out and get away from their families. However they discover a nefarious plot to take over the world! The film’s due out August 22nd, 2012.

Sam Worthington is rocking a lovely bouffant look in the followup to Clash of The Titans. The Jonathan Liebesman directed movie is out March 20th, and sees Perseus heading into the underworld after Zeus is kidnapped.

Three New John Carter Banners

December 3, 2011 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

I have a feeling Disney has decided we’re going to get excited about John Carter whether we want to or not, and they’re going to inundate us with stuff to try and ensure that happens. After the trailer earlier this week, now three rather cool new banners have arrived. The film is out March 9th. John Carter tells the tale of war-weary, former military captain John Carter, who is inexplicably transported to Mars where he becomes reluctantly involved in a conflict of epic proportions between the inhabitants of the planet.

BGPS’s Advent Calendar Of Buff Blokes: Day 2 – Tom Cullen & Chris New

December 2, 2011 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

In the last few weeks Tom Cullen and Chris New have been getting major plaudits for their acting in the wonderful Weekend. However, we here at BGPS are horribly shallow people, so rather than following in the foosteps of the London Film Festival and nominating them for a Best Actor award, we just want to say they’re both pretty hot!

So after Eating Out: Drama Camp’s Aaron Milo yesterday, the second day of our advent calendar of gorgeous buff blokes is dedicated to the delectable Cullen and New! A gay classic in the making, Weekend is still in a few cinemas if you want to catch it, or otherwise you’ll have to pre-order it on DVD or Blu-ray so that you can see it the moment it reaches those formats on March 5th, 2012. Until then click below to enlarge the pics of the film’s resident hotties.

Oh and if you like the Quad Poster below, it’s now available to buy from Amazon. [Read more…]

Christopher Plummer Wins National Board Of Review Award For Beginners

December 2, 2011 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

If there’s one aspect of being gay that’s been almost completely and totally ignored, it’s being older and gay, especially those who only started living openly in their twilight years. However one movie has spilled a little light in that direction, Beginners, and it’s starting to pick up a bit of a head of steam in the early awards ceremonies.

A couple of days ago it won Best Film (shared with Tree Of Life) and Best Ensemble at the Gotham Independent Awards, and now the National Board Of Review has handed veteran actor Christopher Plummer Best Supporting Actor for Beginners. In the film he plays an man who only comes out as gay after the death of his wife, around the same time he’s diagnosed with terminal cancer.

Plummer’s powerful and moving performance is now emerging as a frontrunner for the Best Supporting Actor Oscar, although there is a long way to go before that gong is handed out.

Beginners was also included in the National Board Of Review’s list of the Top 10 Independent films.

Growing Up With Harry Potter

December 2, 2011 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

One of the most unique things about the Harry Potter series is how it managed to keep the same group of actors throughout its entire run, and not only that, but it saw many of them grow up from kids into adults.

With the release of Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows – Part 2 on DVD & Blu-ray, we thought it was the opportune moment to take a look exactly how Harry has aged from a little kid to a young man through the movies, and how we’ve been able to follow his journey through a truly extraordinary series of film.

Just click the first image below and then use you right cursor to see Harry grow up through the eight flicks.

Year 1 – Philosopher’s Stone
Year 2 – Chamber Of Secrets
Year 3 – Prisoner Of Azkaban

Year 4 – Goblet Of Fire
