Discreet Trailer – Travis Mathews’ erotic, queer look at modern American masculinity & politics

June 20, 2018 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Travis Mathews has gained a lot of fans for his In Their Room series, as well as both the short and feature-length versions of I Want Your Love, and his collaboration with James Franco, Interior Leather Bar. Now he’s returning with Discreet, which arrives on DVD/VoD in the UK on July 23rd.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘From the acclaimed director of I Want Your Love and Interior Leather Bar. DISCREET is a powerful contemporary psychological thriller that explores both the allure of YouTube gurus and the cyclic nature of trauma and abuse.

‘Filmmaker and recluse Alex lives in a van. He sets up his camera in rural areas in the US, in the no-man’s land near highways. During a rare visit to his distant mother, she reveals a dark truth hidden since his childhood that threatens to unravel him. Confused and unstable, Alex sets out to confront the looming shadow he has been running from all his life. But as he delves deeper in search of answers, Alex’s grip on reality becomes increasingly more tenuous and before long he finds himself unable to determine right from wrong.

‘DISCREET stars Johnny Man (A Ghost Story), Joy Cunningham, Atsuko Okatsuka, and Jordan Elsass, and offers a disturbing insight into the dark heart of Trump’s America.’

A Gay Coming Out Scene Didn’t Make It Into Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom

June 20, 2018 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Once again a major tentpole Hollywood release has toyed with having a LGBT major character, but then backed out of explicitly mentioning by leaving it on the cutting room floor. Following in the footsteps of the likes of Valkyrie in Thor: Ragnarok, Vice Admiral Holdo in Star Wars: The Last Jedi, and (allegedly) Dumbledore in the upcoming Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald, is Dr. Zia Rodriguez in Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom.

The actress behind the paleo-veterinarian character, Daniella Pineda, has revealed that they filmed a scene where Zia reveals she’s a lesbian, or at least somewhere on the LGBT spectrum. Talking to Yahoo!, Pineda says, “I look at Chris and I’m like: ‘Yeah, square jaw, good bone structure, tall, muscles. I don’t date men, but if I did, it would be you. It would gross me out, but I’d do it.’ I love that I’m looking at Chris Pratt, the hottest guy in the world, and I’m like, ‘It would gross me out, but I guess I would do it!’ It was also cool, because it was a little insight into my character. But they cut it.”

The scene was cut, according to the character, because the original cut of the movie was two hours and 40 minutes long. As a result this character moment was removed during the process of getting it down to a more manageable 127 minutes.

This excuse has been used over and over again in Hollywood though, as it’s wearing a little thing. It’s probably true that in the filmmaker and studio’s minds, timing is the reason these scenes end up getting was removed, but that’s because the LGBT sides of characters in huge movies are always written as so tangential, which makes them so easy to remove. In nearly every case where one of these films has flirted with explicitly saying they’ve got a gay character, it’s been mentioned or hinted at in a single scene. Although a couple of these scenes have made it to the screen – such as the ‘gay moment’ in Beauty and the Beast – most have ended up on the cutting room floor simply because they were written in a way that almost by design made it superfluous and at risk of seeming tokenistic.

Until screenwriters realise that a LGBT character’s sexuality can be woven into the movie in the same way it is for most straight people (who tend to flirt and mention their attraction to people of the opposite sex more than once in an entire movie), it’s likely we’ll keep hearing about how a massive movie filmed a gay scene but it ended up on the cutting room floor.

Welcome to Marwen Trailer – Steve Carell creates a miniature world for Robert Zemeckis

June 20, 2018 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Director Robert Zemeckis returns with Welcome To Marwen, which some think may be in the award season running next year (although it’s way too early to say). It’s certainly being lined up for one with a late 2018 release planned.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Welcome to Marwen tells the miraculous true story of one broken man’s fight as he discovers how artistic imagination can restore the human spirit. When a devastating attack shatters Mark Hogancamp (Carell) and wipes away all memories, no one expected recovery. Putting together pieces from his old and new life, Mark meticulously creates a wondrous town where he can heal and be heroic. As he builds an astonishing art installation—a testament to the most powerful women he knows—through his fantasy world, he draws strength to triumph in the real one.

‘In a bold, wondrous and timely film from this revolutionary pioneer of contemporary cinema, Welcome to Marwen shows that when your only weapon is your imagination…you’ll find courage in the most unexpected place.’

New The Meg Trailer – Jason Statham takes on a truly Giant Shark

June 20, 2018 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

The Meg may be one of the worst film titles around (and even worse than the book it’s based on, which was simply titled ‘Meg’), but the movie might prove to be guilty pleasure fun. It’s basically Jaws on steroids but with its tongue slightly in its cheek.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Jason Statham (“Spy,” “Furious 7,” “The Expendables” films) and award-winning Chinese actress Li Bingbing (“Transformers: Age of Extinction,” “Forbidden Kingdom,” “The Message”) star in the science fiction action thriller “The Meg,” directed by Jon Turteltaub (the “National Treasure” movies, “Last Vegas”).

‘A deep-sea submersible—part of an international undersea observation program—has been attacked by a massive creature, previously thought to be extinct, and now lies disabled at the bottom of the deepest trench in the Pacific…with its crew trapped inside. With time running out, expert deep sea rescue diver Jonas Taylor (Jason Statham) is recruited by a visionary Chinese oceanographer (Winston Chao), against the wishes of his daughter Suyin (Li Bingbing), to save the crew—and the ocean itself—from this unstoppable threat: a pre-historic 75-foot-long shark known as the Megalodon. What no one could have imagined is that, years before, Taylor had encountered this same terrifying creature. Now, teamed with Suyin, he must confront his fears and risk his own life to save everyone trapped below…bringing him face to face once more with the greatest and largest predator of all time.’

The film is due in UK cinemas on August 10th. Take a look at the new poster and trailer below.  [Read more…]

Hunger Games’ Amandla Stenberg Reveals That She Now Identifies As Gay

June 18, 2018 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Amandla Stenberg is part of a generation of young artists and performers who seem more comfortable talking about their sexuality than has been true for many of those older than them. The actress has previously talked about being queer, bisexual, pansexual and/or gender fluid, but now the 19-year has said that she currently identifies as gay.

The up and coming Stenberg is perhaps still best known for playing Rue in The Hunger Games movies, but also impressed many as one of the leads in last year’s teen romance, Everything Everything. She is tipped by many as a major star of the future.

Talking to Wonderland she told them, ‘Yep, I’m gay… I’m grateful for how being gay has afforded me this ability to experience and understand love and sex, and therefore life, in an expansive and infinite way. The continual process of unlearning heteronormativity and internalized homophobia can be difficult, but one of the biggest blessings lies in the magic that comes from having to understand love outside the confines of learned heterosexual roles.’

She was also keen to point out that,My sexuality is not a byproduct of my past experiences with men, who I have loved, but rather a part of myself I was born with and love deeply.’

Stenberg confirmed she saw the interview as a true coming out (in print at least), with a rainbow colured Instagram post where she wrote, ‘OUT & PROUD. So happy to say the words Yep, I’m Gay in official print. Interviewed for @wonderland by someone I stan infinitely – the fiercest garbagio pop queen @kingprincess69. Thank you to KP for providing me with such a safe space to come out. We talk about gay sobbing, first encounters with lesbian masturbation, queer icons, Toni Morrison, disillusionment as a critical step, the art I’ve been working on, and the films that I have coming out this year. Full interview on newsstands now and available online Monday.’

You can read the full interview over at Wonderland. [Read more…]

Teen Wolf’s Tyler Posey Set To Play Gay In Now Apocalypse

June 18, 2018 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Now that Teen Wolf has come to an end (and his movie career wasn’t exactly helped by the recent horror Truth or Dare), Tyler Posey has decided to head for the apocalypse. After playing recurring characters in Jane The Virgin and Scream: The Series, he’s getting a boyfriend in the upcoming TV series, Now Apocalypse.

Variety reports that the Steven Soderbergh produced show is ‘a surreal, coming-of-age comedy that follows Ulysses and his friends Carly, Ford and Severine, who are on various quests pursing love, sex and fame in Los Angeles. Between sexual and romantic dating app adventures, Ulysses grows increasingly troubled as foreboding premonitory dreams make him wonder if some kind of dark and monstrous conspiracy going on, or is he just smoking too much weed?

‘Posey will appear as Gabriel, described as an incredibly charismatic and mysterious guy that Ulysses matches with on a dating app. During their highly-anticipated first date, they can hardly contain themselves.’

Ulysses will be played by Avan Jogia, best known from Nickelodeon’s Victorious and for playing the title character in a mini-series about King Tut. It’s perhaps not too surprise that the show will have a queer lead character, as it was created by Gregg Araki, the filmmaker behind the likes of the LGBT-themed movies Mysterious Skin, Kaboom, and The Living End. The US TV network Starz has ordered a 10-episode first Season of the show, which is due to air later this year.

New Brain On Fire Trailer – Chloe Moretz falls into madness in the true-life tale

June 18, 2018 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Synopsis: ‘One morning, 24-year-old Susannah Cahalan woke up in a hospital bed. She couldn’t speak. She couldn’t move. And she had no idea how she got there. Based on Cahalan’s bestselling memoir Brain on Fire: My Month of Madness, director Gerard Barrett’s adaptation captures the horrifying experience of one woman’s unexplained descent into madness and the medical miracle it took to pull her back from the brink.

‘Fresh out of journalism school and ready to embark on adult life, Susannah (Chloë Grace Moretz) already seemed to have it all: her dream job at the New York Post, supportive co-workers (Tyler Perry and Jenny Slate), a devoted boyfriend (Thomas Mann), and a loving family (Richard Armitage and Carrie-Anne Moss). Then, almost overnight, this ingénue went from one of the Post’s most reliable reporters to an unstable, paranoid shell of her former self.

‘Plagued by auditory hallucinations and memory loss, doctors dismissed her condition with a diagnosis of partying too hard and stress. But as her condition worsened, the stakes grew higher, and the race to find an answer became a matter of life and death.’

Dumbo Teaser Trailer – Take a first look at Tim Burton’s live-action take on the classic

June 15, 2018 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Of all of Disney’s planned live-action versions of their animated classics, Dumbo has been one of the most unexpected and potentially risky. Now the first teaser has arrived, which is both intriguing and rather eerie, although may not be that good a guide to the tone of the actual film.

Synopsis: ‘Disney’s new live-action feature film “Dumbo” introduces Holt Farrier (Colin Farrell), a former circus star who finds his life turned upside down when he returns from the war. Circus owner Max Medici (Danny DeVito) enlists Holt to care for a newborn elephant whose oversized ears make him a laughingstock in an already struggling circus. But when Holt’s children discover that Dumbo can fly, persuasive entrepreneur V.A. Vandevere (Michael Keaton) and an aerial artist named Colette Marchant (Eva Green) swoop in to make the peculiar pachyderm a star.

‘Walt Disney’s classic animated tale “Dumbo,” which opened Oct. 23, 1941, won an Oscar® for best scoring of a musical picture and was nominated for best original song for “Baby Mine.”

‘The creative team includes cinematographer Ben Davis, BSC (“Doctor Strange,” “Guardians of the Galaxy”), Oscar® winning production designer Rick Heinrichs (“Star Wars: The Last Jedi,” “Dark Shadows”), four-time Oscar®-winning costume designer Colleen Atwood (“Alice in Wonderland,” “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them”), editor Chris Lebenzon, ACE (“Alice in Wonderland,” “Maleficent”) and BAFTA Award-winning make-up designer Paul Gooch (“Alice in Wonderland,” “Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children”).’

The film is due out March 2019. Take a look at the first teaser trailer and poster below. [Read more…]

New The Grinch Trailer – Dr. Seuss’ character gets animated with the voice of Benedict Cumberbatch

June 15, 2018 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Synopsis: ‘For their eighth fully animated feature, Illumination and Universal Pictures present The Grinch, based on Dr. Seuss’ beloved holiday classic. The Grinch tells the story of a cynical grump who goes on a mission to steal Christmas, only to have his heart changed by a young girl’s generous holiday spirit. Funny, heart warming and visually stunning, it’s a universal story about the spirit of Christmas and the indomitable power of optimism.

‘Academy Award® nominee Benedict Cumberbatch lends his voice to the infamous Grinch, who lives a solitary life inside a cave on Mt. Crumpet with only his loyal dog, Max, for company. With a cave rigged with inventions and contraptions for his day-to-day needs, the Grinch only sees his neighbours in Who-ville when he runs out of food.

‘Each year at Christmas they disrupt his tranquil solitude with their increasingly bigger, brighter and louder celebrations. When the Whos declare they are going to make Christmas three times bigger this year, the Grinch realizes there is only one way for him to gain some peace and quiet: he must steal Christmas. To do so, he decides he will pose as Santa Claus on Christmas Eve, even going so far as to trap a lackadaisical misfit reindeer to pull his sleigh.

‘Meanwhile, down in Who-ville, Cindy-Lou Who-a young girl overflowing with holiday cheer-plots with her gang of friends to trap Santa Claus as he makes his Christmas Eve rounds so that she can thank him for help for her overworked single mother. As Christmas approaches, however, her good-natured scheming threatens to collide with the Grinch’s more nefarious one. Will Cindy-Lou achieve her goal of finally meeting Santa Claus? Will the Grinch succeed in silencing the Whos’ holiday cheer once and for all?

The Nun Trailer – The Conjuring universe is expanding again

June 14, 2018 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

I severely doubt that when they were making The Conjuring anyone thought that a few years later it would become a ridiculously popular franchise with an ever growing parade of spin-offs. Now a new one is coming in the form of The Nun.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘When a young nun at a cloistered abbey in Romania takes her own life, a priest with a haunted past and a novitiate on the threshold of her final vows are sent by the Vatican to investigate. Together they uncover the order’s unholy secret. Risking not only their lives but their faith and their very souls, they confront a malevolent force in the form of the same demonic nun that first terrorized audiences in “The Conjuring 2,” as the abbey becomes a horrific battleground between the living and the damned.

‘“The Nun” stars Oscar nominated Demian Bichir (“A Better Life”) as Father Burke, Taissa Farmiga (TV’s “American Horror Story”) as Sister Irene, and Jonas Bloquet (“Elle”) as local villager Frenchie. The cast also includes Charlotte Hope (TV’s “Game of Thrones”) as the abbey’s Sister Victoria, Ingrid Bisu (“Toni Erdmann”) as Sister Oana, and Bonnie Aarons, reprising her “Conjuring 2” role as the title character.’

The movie will be in cinemas in September. Take a look at the trailer and teaser poster below. [Read more…]
